A Day in the Life of the Smiths
The Smiths are a typical American family. Mr. Smith comes home from work as soon as it’s 5 o’clock. As a result of a long day at the office, he looks a bit tired. Mrs. Smith has been busy doing housework all day. She has swept the floor, folded the clothes, and taken out the rubbish. Now she is doing the dishes in the kitchen.
Their 14-year-old son, Tom, comes home from school at 4:30. He throws down his schoolbag on the sofa and starts to work on his math homework. He knows that if he wants to get good grades, he must finish doing his homework carefully. After an hour, he takes a break and decides to help out with the housework. He makes the bed in his room and then goes to the kitchen to ask his mom if he can do something else.
Tonight, the family decides not to cook at home. They go out for dinner. On the way, Tom asks his dad if he can get a ride to his friend’s house this weekend. His dad agrees. After dinner, they don’t stay out late as Tom has to study for a test tomorrow.
Back home, Tom’s friend calls and invites him to a party on Saturday. Tom is excited and decides to go to the store to buy some snacks for the party. Before he leaves, his little sister asks him to take her for a walk. Tom hates to do this at first because he is in a hurry, but he knows he should look after his sister, so he takes her for a short walk around the neighborhood.
While Tom is out, Mrs. Smith asks Mr. Smith to share the housework more often. She feels she has enough stress with taking care of the house and the kids. Mr. Smith realizes his wife’s hard work and promises to do his part.
Later that evening, Tom’s friend comes over to borrow his basketball. Tom lends him the ball and tells him to be careful with it. They hang out for a while, talking about the party.
The next morning, Tom gets up late. He quickly gets dressed and rushes to school. On the bus, he meets his classmate. They get on well with each other and talk about their plans for the weekend. When he arrives at school, he realizes he left his English book at home. He hopes he won’t get into trouble for not having it in class.

I am a student from Shanghai. Last October, my school had the Charity Culture Day. Students between the ages of 12 and 18 joined in the event. All the money raised from the event went to the children in need.

But many children in other places aren’t so lucky. Some can’t even buy their favorite books. So my school wants to do something for them.
That day each class chose a different country. The students prepared and sold traditional food of the country to raise money. They also had to learn about its culture, history and geography.
Many visitors came to the event. They said that they were excited and happy to be part of the event.

In a natural park of Qinghai, a special wild (野生的) wolf became popular for asking passing drivers for food. People loved to take pictures and make videos of this friendly wolf, and soon it became famous.
However, there are some problems. This wolf used to be very thin and wild, but now it’s getting round and even picky (挑剔的) about what it eats. Also, this wolf is not alone anymore. Other wolves have joined it, and now there’s a group of them asking people for food.
Scientists are worried about these wolves. They say that if we keep feeding wild animals, they might get sick or not be able to find food on their own. Feeding wild animals can be dangerous, too. These animals can carry diseases (疾病), and they might hurt us. Besides, when people stop their cars to give food, it can cause busy roads and accidents.
Experts say it’s best to let wild animals live their own lives. The park has put up signs telling people not to feed the animals, and the police are helping to make sure everyone follows the rules.
We should always take care of wild animals and their homes. By not feeding them, we are actually helping them stay healthy and strong in the wild.
23. Why was the wolf special?
A. It liked to play games with people. B. It often asked humans for food. C. It was friendly to other animals.
24. What happened to the wolf then?
A. It learned to find food by itself. B. It moved away from the park. C. It was getting fatter.
25. Why are scientists worried about these wolves?
A. Because they might lose their homes.
B. Because the number of them is getting smaller.
C. Because they might get sick or not know how to find food.
26. What do the experts advise us to do?
A. To let wild animals live naturally.
B. To put up more signs to help wild animals.
C. To help the police save animals in the wild.

Tonight the family decides not to cook at home.
