We find the owl at the very edge of our woods the morning after the storm. Wings flight-frozen and round eyes glassy. I touch its feathers lightly with my fingertip and I’m surprised because they still feel real even though the owl has slipped away somewhere else and Dad is already digging a hole for it in the rain-soaked earth.
I lift its body and it’s huge in my hands but the hollow bones do most of the work for me and I almost think the owl might shake the stiffness from its feathers and fly away. I really don’t think this one should go into a hole in the ground. I say that to Dad and he says that it’s the circle of life and that now the owl will become part of nature again. Feeding the soil with its flesh and growing the roots of plants from its feathers.
Dad shifts the last of the dirt with his spade and sits down at the base of a tree with a huff of air that smokes around him. I put the bird in the hole and mark it with a smooth pebble (鹅卵石) so I’ll always know.
After we’ve buried the owl, we walk all around the woods and clear the worst of the damage from the winds and the rain. The damage isn’t as bad as it’s been before and it feels like the storm has cleaned everything back to being new and fresh. I use my hawk eyes and search the ground in flicks and sweeps and I find treasures in the rain-raked earth just like always. Pieces of pottery and something that could be a Roman coin. I slip them into my pocket and they bump against each other to tell their stories to me, but I’ll listen later.
I help Dad load the best of the fallen branches on to the trailer so we can cut them for fire wood or maybe a bonfire, and then we drive over the muddy paths and back to our house.
4. What do we know about the owl when the author finds it?
A. It is already dead. B. It is hidden in a hole.
C. It is to stiff to fly away. D. It is trying to flee the woods.
5. Why does the author mark the hole with a pebble?
A. To make future visits convenient. B. To show sympathy for the owl.
C. To keep the site clear of plants. D. To draw the attention of passers-by.
6. What message does the author want to convey by mentioning the owl?
A. Storms make trees take deeper roots. B. In nature’s embrace, time stands still.
C. The darkest hour has only sixty minutes. D. With every leaf’s fall, a new life rises.
7. What does “I’ll listen later” in paragraph 4 reveal about the author?
A. Money-driven. B. Wonder-seeking.
C. Artistically talented. D. Emotionally sound.
A 5. A 6. D 7. B

I touch its feathers lightly with my fingertip and I'm surprised because they still feel real even though the owl has slipped away somewhere else and Dad is already digging a hole for it in the rain - soaked earth.(猫头鹰的翅膀展开,双眼圆睁,目光呆滞。
根据第三段“I put the bird in the hole and mark it with a smooth pebble (鹅卵石) so I’ll always know.(我把那只鸟放进洞里,然后用一块光滑的鹅卵石做标记,这样我就永远知道它埋在哪里了)”可知,作者用鹅卵石标记这个洞是为了自己总能知道猫头鹰埋葬的位置,方便日后再来。故选A。
根据第二段“Dad says that it’s the circle of life and that now the owl will become part of nature again. Feeding the soil with its flesh and growing the roots of plants from its feathers.(爸爸说这就是生命的循环,这只猫头鹰现在又将成为大自然的一部分。它的肉身滋养着土壤,它的羽毛中会长出植物的根须)”可知,父亲说这是生命的循环,猫头鹰的身体会滋养土壤,它的羽毛会让植物生根发芽,意味着旧的生命逝去,新的生命会随之升起。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段 “I use my hawk eyes and search the ground in flicks and sweeps and I find treasures in the rain-raked earth just like always. Pieces of pottery and something that could be a Roman coin. I slip them into my pocket and they bump against each other to tell their stories to me.(我像鹰眼一样扫视着地面,不断搜寻着,而且总能在被雨水冲刷过的泥土里发现宝贝。有一片片的陶器,还有一个可能是古罗马硬币的东西。我把它们放进口袋,它们相互碰撞着,向我诉说着它们的故事)”可知,作者把在地上发现的 “宝藏”放进兜里,说稍后再听它们的故事,体现了作者充满好奇心,喜欢探索奇妙事物。故选B。
C
Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle of sorts.
Honey is the only food product made by an insect that humans eat. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial honey. There’s really no substitute (替代品).
A single pound of honey may require a beehive of up to 60,000 bees to visit two million flowers. No wonder some people call it liquid gold! Although amber-colored clover honey tends to be most common, honey comes in a variety of shades and flavors, depending on the flowers that the bees gather nectar (花蜜) from.
Honey has been used throughout history in a number of ways. One of the most remarkable things about it is that it never goes bad. It may crystallize, meaning that it becomes solid in parts, but simply warming it slightly will melt the crystals and return the honey to its liquid form.
No one knows exactly how long honey has been used by humans, but Spanish cave paintings dated at 7,000BC show early evidence of beckeeping. Honey was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift to the gods, and even as an element used to create mummies. Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat. No other food has such lasting power!
Besides its many uses as a sweetener, honey has long been used as a medicinal remedy (疗法). Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria (细菌) to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection. Honey is also an effective remedy to relieve a painful throat. It has even been found to be as effective in easing coughs in children.
The next time a bee flies through your garden or you spread some honey on a piece of toast, think about the miracle of honey.
8. According to the passage, what makes honey unique among the foods that humans eat?
A. Its various shades. B. Its natural creation.
C. Its delightful sweetness. D. Its remarkable history.
9. Why does the author mention the honey in the Egyptian pyramids?
A. To illustrate that it never goes bad.
B. To show the cleverness of Egyptians.
C. To compare it with the honey in Spain.
D. To inform that it originates from Egypt.
10. What is one of the medicinal uses of honey?
A. Promoting bacterial growth.
B. Curing throat pain.
C. Preventing infection in wounds.
D. Resisting common colds.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature
B. Honey: a Timeless Treasure
C. Honey: a Natural Medicinal Remedy
D. Honey: a Common Sweetener
B 9. A 10. C 11. A

细节理解题,根据第二段“Honey is the only food product that humans cat that is made by an insect. Even with all our technical abilities, no one has figured out how to make artificial honey. There’s really no substitute (替代品). (蜂蜜是人类食用的唯一一种由昆虫制造的食品。即使我们拥有所有的技术能力,也没有人想出如何制造人造蜂蜜。真的没有替代品。)”可知,蜂蜜是人类食用的唯一由昆虫制造的食物产品,这是它在人类所食用的食物中独一无二的地方,即它的天然形成方式。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Honey was also used by the ancient Egyptians as a sweetener, as a gift to the gods, and even as an element used to create mummies. Honey has been found inside the Egyptian pyramids, and although that honey was more than 3,000 years old, it would still taste like honey and be safe to eat. No other food has such lasting power! 故选A项。
根据第六段中“Because it’s difficult for any kind of bacteria (细菌) to survive in honey, it makes a perfect barrier on cuts and can prevent infection. (因为任何种类的细菌都很难在蜂蜜中生存,所以它在切口上形成了完美的屏障,可以防止感染。)”可知,蜂蜜的药用用途之一是它能在伤口上形成一道屏障,防止感染。故选C项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Honey is a sweet treat that most people take for granted. But it is more than just a topping for cakes or a sweetener for tea. It’s a miracle of sorts. (蜂蜜是一种大多数人认为理所当然的甜食。但它不仅仅是蛋糕的配料或茶的甜味剂。它在某种程度上是一个奇迹。)”可知,蜂蜜不只是人们习以为常的用于蛋糕或茶的东西,而是一种奇迹般的存在,结合最后一段“The next time a bee flies through your garden or you spread some honey on a piece of toast, think about the miracle of honey. (下次蜜蜂飞过您的花园或您在吐司上涂抹一些蜂蜜时,想想蜂蜜的奇迹。)”再次呼吁人们在看到蜜蜂或食用蜂蜜时思考蜂蜜的奇迹之处。综合全文,都是围绕蜂蜜是大自然赋予的一种甜蜜奇迹来展开叙述的,A项“Honey: a Sweet Miracle of Nature”最能概括文章主旨。故选A项。
D
In the 1930s, the first cake mixes (蛋糕粉) which only required water were invented and some people argued that this approach, the easiest, was the best. But others thought cooks would want to do more. The cake-mix argument may be out-dated, but its central question remains: Just how demanding do we want our technologies to be?
Then what is a demanding technology? Two elements are included: One is that it is technology that takes time to master, and the other is that its operation includes some real risk of failure.
Therefore, a piano is a demanding technology, as is a programming language or a machine system.
However, so-called easy technologies usually require little concentrated effort and produce predictable results. Clearly, easy technologies have remade human society over the past century, but the problem is that, as every individual task becomes easier, we demand much more of both ourselves and others. As a result, we are faced with a larger number of small tasks(writing hundreds of e-mails)instead of fewer difficult tasks (writing several long letters). And, when every task is easy, nearly all people are multitasking
Easy technologies supposedly free us to focus on what matters, but sometimes what matters gets eliminated. Everyone knows that it is easier to drive to the top of a mountain than to hike; the views may be the same, but the feeling never is. Following the same idea, we develop into beings that can do more. However, we can’t get the same satisfaction as we expect.
I don’t mean that everything needs to be done the hard way. But we must take challenges seriously, or we’ll face the danger of becoming creatures whose lives are less satisfying.
12. What makes demanding technologies different from easy technologies?
A. It requires much effort. B. It takes little attention.
C. It achieves intended effect. D. It deals with machines.
13. What is a possible result of easy technologies?
A. More time for concentration. B. Writing much longer letters.
C. Lower expectations on others. D. Doing various tasks at a time.
14. What does the underlined word “eliminated” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Noticed. B. Stressed. C. Improved. D. Removed.
15. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. The Argument Over Cake Mixes B. What Is A Demanding Technology?
C. The Problem With Easy Technologies D. What Challenges Do Humans Face?
A 13. D 14. D 15. C
根据第二段“Then what is a demanding technology? Two elements are included: One is that it is technology that takes time to master, and the other is that its operation includes some real risk of failure.(那么什么是要求高的技术呢?其中包括两个因素:一是技术需要时间来掌握,另一个是它的操作包含一些真正的失败风险)”以及第三段“Therefore, a piano is a demanding technology, as is a programming language or a machine system.(因此,钢琴是一项要求很高的技术,就像编程语言或机器系统一样)”可知,要求高的技术与简单的技术不同,是由于要求高的技术需要很多的努力。故选A。
根据第四段“And, when every task is easy, nearly all people are multitasking (多任务处理).(而且,当每个任务都很容易时,几乎所有的人都在多任务处理)”以及划线词上文“Easy technologies supposedly free us to focus on what matters, but sometimes what matters gets”中but表示转折,说明简单的技术本应使我们能够专注于重要的事情,但有时重要的事情却被移除了。
根据第四段“Clearly, easy technologies have remade human society over the past century, but the problem is that, as every individual task becomes easier, we demand much more of both ourselves and others. As a result, we are faced with a larger number of small tasks(writing hundreds of e-mails)instead of fewer difficult tasks (writing several long letters). And, when every task is easy, nearly all people are multitasking (多任务处理). (显然,在过去的一个世纪里,简单的技术重塑了人类社会,但问题是,随着每一项个人任务变得更容易,我们对自己和他人的要求都要高得多。因此,我们面临的是更多的小任务(写数百封电子邮件),而不是更少的困难任务(写几封长信)。而且,当每一项任务都很容易的时候,几乎所有的人都在多任务处理)”、第五段“Easy technologies supposedly free us to focus on what matters, but sometimes what matters gets eliminated. (简单的技术本可以让我们专注于重要的事情,但有时重要的事情会被移除)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了要求高的技术包含的要素,以及简单技术面临的问题,C选项“简单技术的问题”最符合作为文章标题。故选C。

【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲的是如果我们对通常被看做消极的抱怨进行完善的话就会有美好的事情发生。
【16题详解】
空处位于句首,应为本段内容的概括。根据空前“Complaining is often looked at as a negative, but if you perfect it great things can happen.(抱怨通常被看作是消极的,但如果你完善它,美好的事情就会发生。)”可知虽然抱怨被认为是不好的,但是如果你对其进行完善的话,其实抱怨也会让好事发生,根据空后“Articles and experts insist that too much complaining will lower your empathy (共情) and stop you achieving your dream and living the life you want.(文章和专家坚持认为,太多的抱怨会降低你的同理心,阻止你实现你的梦想,过上你想要的生活。)” Actually, complaining has a bad reputation.(事实上,抱怨的名声不好。)
根据空前“Once we discover how to effectively integrate it, great things can happen.Dr Robin Kowalski found those who complain with the hopes of achieving a certain result tend to be happier.(一旦我们发现如何有效地整合它,美好的事情就会发生。Robin Kowalski博士发现,那些为了达到某种目的而抱怨的人往往更快乐。)”可知如果我们为了达到某个目标而进行合理的抱怨,那么我们会变得更开心,由此可以推出抱怨确实有一些作用,所以空处应该讲抱怨的用途是什么,E项Complaining does serve as a real purpose in our lives.(抱怨确实是我们生活中的一个真正的目的。)
根据空前“ It plays a very important role in our lives and is a skill that can be extremely effective.(它在我们的生活中扮演着非常重要的角色,是一种非常有效的技能。)”可知抱怨在生活中确实很重要,根据空后“So here are some ways to deal with the art of complaining in a skillful way.(因此,这里有一些巧妙地处理抱怨艺术的方法。)” Our goal is not to remove complaining, but make it more useful and effective.(我们的目标不是消除抱怨,而是让它更有用、更有效。)
根据空前“Work out who can give you a hand.(找出谁能帮到你。)”可知我们要找到能帮助自己的人,根据空后“Pick those who can empathize with you or help with your goal.(选择那些能同情你或帮助你实现目标的人。)” Don’t complain to the same people.(不要向同一个人抱怨。)
根据空后“Whatever your complaining, it’ll make for your improvement when used correctly and effectively.(无论你抱怨什么,如果正确有效地使用,它都会有助于你的进步。)” Socialize with others to make complaints accessible.(与他人交往,让抱怨成为可能。)”

That December morning, I decided to take Apple to pay a visit to my aunt. I’d had Apple only a couple of weeks, but we’d become nearly inseparable. I opened the car door. Apple jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I started the car and set off.
It’s always tricky turning around. I live in a remote area up in the hills, surrounded by woods. I have to drive up the mountain to get to my driveway, which is hardly wide enough for one car and ends at a steep (陡峭的) valley.
I twisted around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to cover my eyes. I felt a shake as the left rear (后部的) part of the car dropped. Oh, no! The car slipped and rolled. We landed upside down. I felt a sharp pain in my chest and my legs. I couldn’t move. I looked over to find Apple. She was still in the passenger seat and fortunately she was okay.
I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911. But just as I’d feared; there was no signal (信号) at the bottom of this valley. Now what? Windy, my closest neighbor, lived a quarter mile uphill from me, and had her own driveway. It was unlikely that she or anyone else would drive up to my house.
Apple barked nervously. At least I could get her out of here. There was a hole in the driver’s side rear window. “Come on, Apple,” I said. Painfully, I reached over, picked her up and gently put her head through the hole. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.
As the sun set, it turned cold. I trembled with cold and pain. Had Apple found her way home? She hardly knew the area. My pulse (脉搏) was weakening. I closed my eyes. Suddenly I was awakened by loud barks.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】 “Help!” I shouted with all my strength. When I woke up, I found myself lying in bed and my leg hurt. Suddenly I saw Apple. It looked at me with excited eyes and licked my hand with its tongue, as if it were glad I woke up. It was lying beside my bed excitedly, and I stroked his head gently. “You finally woke up.” Wendy smiled at me.
Later, Windy told me that when she got home from work, Apple was waiting for her. “Apple, why are you here alone? Where is your master?” Wendy asked with concern. At the sight of Wendy, Apple kept barking anxiously around the circle and looked at the direction of the valley. Wendy realized that there seemed to be some danger, and she hurried out to catch up with Apple. “After a long time walk, Apple brought me to you! Thank God you are still alive!” After listening to Wendy, I looked back at Apple. I was glad to own such a brave and loyal dog!

That December morning, I decided to take Apple to pay a visit to my aunt. I’d had Apple only a couple of weeks, but we’d become nearly inseparable. I opened the car door. Apple jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I started the car and set off.
It’s always tricky turning around. I live in a remote area up in the hills, surrounded by woods. I have to drive up the mountain to get to my driveway, which is hardly wide enough for one car and ends at a steep (陡峭) valley.
As the sun set it turned cold. I trembled with cold and pain. Had Apple found her way home? She hardly knew the area. My pulse (脉搏) was weakening. I closed my eyes. Suddenly I was awakened by loud barks.
