On this program this week, I’ll tell about sharks. They are among the oldest animals on earth. Sharks are famous for attacking other sea creatures and even people. Yet they have been threatened by human activities. Scientists say sharks have lived in the world’s oceans for millions of years. Today, there are more than 350 different kinds of sharks. Most sharks are about two meters long. And the biggest whale shark can grow to a length of twenty meters. Sharks have an extremely good sense of smell. They also sense electrical and magnetic(有磁性的)power linked to nerves and muscles of living animals. These power senses help them find their food. They eat fish, other sharks, and plants. Some sharks can be found in very cold areas, but most sharks live in warm waters. Most sharks live in oceans. However, the bull shark leaves ocean waters to enter freshwater rivers and lakes. A The New Jersey State Botanical (植物学的) Garden (NJBG) is a part of Ringwood State Park, New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, Department of Environmental Protection. Without his help, hundreds of wells that now provide fresh water for people in Africa, Central America and India might never have been built. Ryan is what you might call a water ambassador. He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries. Ryan’s efforts didn’t begin in a far-off place, but right at home in Kemptville, Ontario. When he was 6 years old, Ryan learned from his teacher that children in Africa often must walk miles each day to find water. Some even die from drinking dirty water, his teacher said. So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2,000, enough to dig one well. An organization called Canadian Physicians for Aid and Relief (CPAR) chose a site for the well in the village of Agweo, in Uganda. Two years later, CPAR arranged for Ryan to visit Uganda for the opening ceremony of the well. Ryan met a new friend named Jimmy. Then they formed a close friendship. He often traveled with Ryan to explain how water changed his life. After the first well, “the ripple effect took over,” Ryan says, “and one goal led to another.” With adults’ help, he founded Ryan’s Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $1.5 million and built 255wells that serve more than 427,000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn’t bragging(炫耀). “The most impressive people I’ve met are the other kids who want to help too,” he says. “I’m just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. That’s the key reason why I made it come true. Everybody can do something.” 24. What problem is Ryan working to solve? A. Not enough money for education. B A shortage of safe drinking water. C. African children’s being extremely poor. D. Polluted water causing diseases. 25. How did Ryan get money for his first well? A. He did chores and sold his idea. B. He created an educational foundation. C. He traveled to villages across the world. D. He started a website to ask for donations. 26. What would be the most important for Ryan to realize his dream? A. Knowing his limits. B. Making friends. C. Never giving up. D. Not bragging about awards. 27. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. A Story of a Special Well B. An Organization of Saving Water C. A Boy Who Makes a Difference D. A Well That Brought People Together 【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第一段“He traveled the world to tell people how they can help solve a big problem: the lack of safe drinking water in many developing countries.(他周游世界,告诉人们如何帮助解决一个大问题:许多发展中国家缺乏安全饮用水。)” 根据第二段“So Ryan decided to act. He did chores for his parents and neighbors. He spoke to schools, churches, and clubs about his goal. The word spread. After several months of hard work, Ryan had raised $2,000, enough to dig one well.(所以Ryan决定采取行动。他为父母和邻居做家务。他向学校、教堂和俱乐部讲述他的目标。消息传开了。经过几个月的辛勤努力,Ryan筹集到了2000美元,这笔钱足够挖一口井。)”可知,Ryan通过做家务和推销他的观点,来为他的第一口井筹钱,故选A。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段““I’m just a typical kid. I had a small dream, and I stayed with it. That’s the key reason why I made it come true. Everybody can do something.”(我只是一个普通的孩子。我有一个小梦想,我坚持它。这就是我让它成真的关键原因。每个人都能做点什么。)”可知,永不言弃是Ryan实现梦想最重要的因素。故选C。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,结合最后一段“After the first well, “the ripple effect took over,” Ryan says, “and one goal led to another.” With adults’ help, he founded Ryan’s Well Foundation to educate people about the importance of water. Now the foundation has raised more than $1.5 million and built 255wells that serve more than 427,000 people in 12 countries. Ryan has received many awards but he isn’t bragging.(在第一口井之后,“涟漪效应开始显现,”Ryan说,“一个目标接一个目标。”在成年人的帮助下,他成立了Ryan水井基金会,教育人们关于水的重要性。现在,该基金会已经筹集了150多万美元,建造了255口水井,服务于12个国家的42.7万人。Ryan获得了很多奖项,但他并没有自夸。)”可知,本文主要是关于一个男孩Ryan,通过努力帮助很多地区建立了水井,帮助了当地人们的同时,还教育人们水的重要性,所以B项“一个有所影响的男孩”符合文章主旨,故选C。 C When you think of a typical American, who do you picture? A pretty blond white American like Taylor Swift or a handsome black American like basketball star Michael Jordan? In fact, there was a time when the average American looked like neither of these people. Back in the year 1500, the average American was a brown-skinned hunter-gatherer who probably rode a horse and wore clothing made from animal skins. Today, the ancestors of these people are broadly referred to as “Native Americans”, “American Indians” or simply “Indians”. When the European settlement of North America began, there was intense conflict between settlers from overseas and these native people. In 1830, former US president Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act. This act required all Indians to migrate to west of the Mississippi River to allow for the expansion of the US. American Indians were treated as a military “enemy” until 1924, when the few Indians still alive at that point were granted US citizenship. That was the first time that the US government formally recognized the rights of Indians. While the story of the American Indians has been a sad one, their legacy is still felt every day in the US. Many US geographical names come from Indian languages, such as Ohio, Topeka, Kansas and the Potomac River. At the same time, there are many successful academics and other important US leaders who are descended (是…的后裔) from Indians. And nowadays, more and more history classes in US public schools are educating students about how Indians suffered during the settlement of the US. Although what happened cannot be undone, we can learn at least one thing from the sad history of the Indians: If we want a better future, we must look carefully and honestly at the past. 28. Why does the writer mention Taylor Swift and Michael Jordan? A. To challenge readers’ ideas of a typical American. B. To support the writer’s point on American identity. C. To provide typical examples of native Americans. D. To compare their appearances with typical Americans. 29. How were the American Indians treated in the middle of the 19th century? A. They were granted US citizenship. B. They were regarded as a military “enemy”. C. They were required to live along the Mississippi River. D. They were asked to leave the country by the US government. 30. Which of the following aspects shows the American Indian legacy today? A. Origins of names of some places. B. Popularity of the Indian language. C. Success of the Academic and other important US leaders. D. More and more history classes in American public schools. 31. What is the author’s attitude toward the history of American Indians? A. It should be ignored to move on. B. It holds little interest for him. C. It’s hurtful to be reminded of it. D. It’s valuable to reflect on it. A 29. B 30. A 31. 根据第一段“When you think of a typical American, who do you picture? A pretty blond white American like Taylor Swift or a handsome black American like basketball star Michael Jordan? In fact, there was a time when the average American looked like neither of these people.(当你想到一个典型的美国人时,你会想到谁?像泰勒·斯威夫特这样漂亮的金发美国白人,还是像篮球明星迈克尔·乔丹这样英俊的美国黑人?事实上,曾经有一段时间,普通美国人看起来不像这些人。)”可推知,作者提到泰勒·斯威夫特和迈克尔·乔丹是为了挑战读者对典型美国人的看法,形成一种反差,吸引读者。故选A。 根据第三段中“American Indians were treated as a military “enemy” until 1924, when the few Indians still alive at that point were granted US citizenship.(美国印第安人都被视为军事“敌人”,直到 1924 年,当时少数仍然活着的印第安人被授予美国公民身份)”可知,19世纪中叶,美洲印第安人被视为军事“敌人”。 根据倒数第二段中“While the story of the American Indians has been a sad one, their legacy is still felt every day in the US. Many US geographical names come from Indian languages, such as Ohio, Topeka, Kansas and the Potomac River.(尽管美洲印第安人的故事令人悲伤,但美国每天仍能感受到他们的遗产。美国的许多地名都来自印第安语言,如俄亥俄州、托皮卡州、堪萨斯州和波托马克河。)”可知,一些地名的由来体现了当今美洲印第安人的遗产。故选A。 根据最后一段“Although what happened cannot be undone, we can learn at least one thing from the sad history of the Indians: If we want a better future, we must look carefully and honestly at the past.(尽管已经发生的事情无法挽回,但我们至少可以从印第安人的悲惨历史中学到一件事:如果我们想要更好的未来,我们必须认真、诚实地审视过去)”可推知,作者认为反思美洲印第安人的历史是很有价值的。故选D。 D Studies have found that having lots of friends helps us feel happier. But sometimes we stop talking to friends we used to be close with. Scientists did seven studies with about 2,500 people. They wanted to know how people feel about getting back in touch with friends they haven’t talked to in a while. They looked at the problems and reasons for reconnecting and if there were ways to help people send a message to old friend. To see how willing people were to reconnect, the scientists asked them how ready they were to do different things right away. This included calling or texting a friend they hadn’t talked to in a long time. The results showed that people were not very excited about reaching out to an old friend, just like they don’t want to talk to someone new or pick up trash. People were worried that their old friends might not want to hear from them. It might be weird to reconnect after so long, and they felt bad. They thought both they and their old friends were too busy to talk again. People thought there were only a few good reasons to get in touch, like saying happy birthday to a friend. Talking about a memory they shared was the second reason. They didn’t like the idea of asking an old friend for help. A scientist said that even though people were warned about how an old friend would react to their message, the help they offered to ease this worry didn’t really work well. The scientist added that we know from many years of research that friends make us happy and give our lives meaning. These research findings will encourage people to send a message to someone they miss. It will be the first step to establish contact with friends they have not communicated with for a long period. 32. What is the main focus of the scientists’ research? A. The benefits of maintaining friendships. B. The process of forming new friendships. C. The feelings about reconnecting with old friendships. D. The reasons for losing contact with long-lost friends. 33. What did the scientists find out about people’s willingness to reconnect with old friends? A. Most people wanted to reconnect. B. People were not sure about contacting old friends. C. People liked to ask old friends for help. D. Being busy was the main reason for not making contact. 34. What does the underlined word “weird” mean in paragraph 4? A. Strange. B. Interesting. C. Fashionable. D. Fresh. 35. What was found to help people contact old friends? A. Sending a message to ask for a favor. B. Focusing on the guilt of not reaching out. C. Expressing concerns over the message reception. D. Practicing social connection with current friends first. C 33. B 34. A 35. 根据第二段“Scientists did seven studies with about 2,500 people. They wanted to know how people feel about getting back in touch with friends they haven’t talked to in a while.(科学家们对大约2500人进行了7项研究。他们想知道人们与许久未联系的朋友重新取得联系时的感受)”可知,科学家们研究的主要焦点是与旧朋友重新联系的感觉。故选C。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The results showed that people were not very excited about reaching out to an old friend, just like they don’t want to talk to someone new or pick up trash.(研究结果表明,人们对联系老朋友并不是很兴奋,就像他们不想和陌生人说话或捡垃圾一样)”可知,关于人们与老朋友重新联系的意愿,科学家们发现人们不确定是否要联系老朋友。 根据划线词后文“to reconnect after so long(在这么久之后重新联系)”以及“and they felt bad. They thought both they and their old friends were too busy to talk again.(他们感觉很糟糕。 故选A。 根据倒数第二段“People thought there were only a few good reasons to get in touch, like saying happy birthday to a friend. Talking about a memory they shared was the second reason. They didn’t like the idea of asking an old friend for help.(人们认为只有几个好的理由来联系,比如对朋友说一声生日快乐。谈论他们共同的记忆是第二个理由。他们不喜欢向老朋友求助)”以及最后一段“These research findings will encourage people to send a message to someone they miss. It will be the first step to establish contact with friends they have not communicated with for a long period.(这些研究结果将鼓励人们给他们想念的人发信息。这将是他们与长期没有联系的朋友建立联系的第一步)”可知,人们不喜欢向老朋友求助,以此作为不联系的理由,而研究结果鼓励人们给老朋友发信息,故可推知,发信息请求帮忙可以帮助人们联系老朋友。故选A。 Living a healthy life is all about choosing to make healthy choices each day. She had an unusual view on helping others that I didn’t really understand until one cold, winter day when we picked up my brothers at school. “Who is that child?” Mom pointed at a skinny, angry-looking girl across the street. “She doesn’t even have a coat. It’s freezing!” “That’s Becky Ingler. She always looks mad like that,” I replied. Becky didn’t have a father, and everybody laughed at her. “I’ll visit her tomorrow,” Mom said. The next day, we went to the Inglers’ house. A tired-looking woman appeared, and Mom smiled, “Hello, Mrs. Ingler. I’m just visiting some of our neighbors.” Once inside, I noticed there was a rusty coal stove and a big messy bed. Mom looked at each of the children carefully. As we left, Mom told Mrs. Ingler she would visit them again soon. Mom’s old sewing machine (缝纫机) worked for two days and nights to turn some shabby clothes into stylish winter coats. She said to me, “I need your help to send these coats to the Inglers this afternoon.” “Wow!” I said. “They’re lucky to get these.” “No,” said Mom as she faced me. “We’re the lucky ones to be able to help them. We must make sure these coats are given freely, without the Inglers paying a price for them.” I didn’t understand what Mom meant. Mom explained, “I don’t want these coats to cost them their pride or dignity (尊严). We can’t show we are somehow better than they are.” I asked Mom what we should do if they refused the coats. Mrs. Ingler looked at the coat, and then glanced at Becky. “I’d be happy to help.” Mrs. Ingler gave my mother a knowing look. “Thank you.” “You’re doing us a favor,” Mom smiled. As we left, I noticed Becky examining the coats happily. She lifted her head and smiled al Mom and me. She looked so happy and satisfied. It seemed that she became a Becky I hadn’t seen before. B. A shortage of safe drinking water. A Well That Brought People Together C When you think of a typical American, who do you picture? Although what happened cannot be undone we can learn at least one thing from the sad history of the Indians: If we want a better future, we must look carefully and honestly at the past. D Studies have found that having lots of friends helps us feel happier. D Practicing social connection with current friends first. Living a healthy life is all about choosing to make healthy choices each day. Mom smiled and said, “I have a plan in mind.” Later that day, we went to the Inglers’ house again. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As we left, I noticed Becky examining the coats happily. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
