Gift Giving Is About the Buyer, Not the Receiver
Many of us like to think we focus on the recipient’s needs when choosing a gift, but researchers find the process isn’t so simple. “The urge to give an unexpected, wow-worthy gift comes from the giver ____11____ (want) to show how much they know about the recipient and to get them something ____12____ surprises and delights them,” says Galak, a consumer psychologist.

Self-centered motives ____15____ (root) in many gift choices: Concert tickets can say I want to feel closer to you. ____16____ (choose) a custom artwork instead of something from the wedding registry can mean I want you to believe that I understand you better than anyone else.
Sometimes, not buying a gift is a form of self-protection — we don’t want to feel like ____17____ we own is not good enough. “It isn’t about making you happy,” Galak explains. “It’s about making sure I don’t make myself ____18____ (badly) off. The goal is to avoid envy.”
“These are not choices about the recipient anymore,” Galak says. “They help the giver take pride ____19____ the giving process.” He has also found that people sometimes purposely give gifts they don’t believe to be best, ____20____ he calls “selfish prosocial (亲社会的) behavior.”

“I thought, Hang on, I want to be wealthy,” Counsel recalls.
Thinking like a millionaire is a crucial first step to becoming one. “Most people retire financial underachievers,” he says. “You have to see the world differently from the way other people see the world.” Counsel borrowed enough money for a deposit on a house, fixed it up and invested the money he made in the share market. In just three years and eight months he’d made his first million.
What matters most, he says, is mindset: freeing yourself from society’s conditioning and becoming economically and personally free.
“As soon as we earn an income, we’re encouraged to buy things we can’t afford,” says Counsel. “Credit and buy-now-pay-later schemes tempted us into a life of debt servicing rather than experiencing the freedom that income should provide.” Today, he has more money than he cares to talk about, yet he still lives in the same suburban Californian house and shuns the trappings of the luxuries that many people dream of. “My neighbors don’t have a clue how much money I have,” he says. “Everybody laughs at me about my Hyundai car... but it’s bloody comfortable.”

Odeku was not found through traditional scouting (球探) methods. In his East London park, he set up his phone and filmed himself doing exercises like 30-second push-ups, 10-meter sprints, and side jumps. AiSCOUT’s AI platform analyzed his movements. The platform, created by data scientists and top scouts, tests players with standard exercises and provides immediate feedback using machine learning algorithms (算法).
The idea came from founder Darren Peries’ frustration when his son was let go by Tottenham’s academy at 16 without any performance records. “Clubs had no footage or data to evaluate him again,” says COO Richard Felton-Thomas. “While senior teams use advanced tracking, youth football, even at top academies, lacks good data.” After seven months of studying millions of data points, AiSCOUT now tracks details like joint angles during jumps and speed patterns, giving feedback within an hour.
Top performers move on to ball-skill tests. Odeku’s trial for Burnley involved moving the ball through seven markers filmed in his local park. His speed and control earned him an invitation to the club’s training center, a big turn-around for a player who had been dropped by Premier League academies for being “too small.”
“This technology fixes partiality—which means academies tend to prefer players who are already physically developed.” says Felton-Thomas. “As a result, Late bloomers like Odeku, who grew later, get missed.” AiSCOUT helps clubs keep track of players’ progress, including physical and skill improvements.
Unlike traditional scouting, where experts travel to matches hoping to find talent, AiSCOUT works with teams like Chelsea and Burnley to find hidden players. “We spot players who have been overlooked,” says Felton-Thomas. The platform even helps recruit Under-8 players by using measures like sprint speed and decision-making.
For Odeku, now playing for Haringey Borough’s senior team, the app replaced luck with clear, measurable data. “Before, you needed perfect timing—a scout watching you on your best day,” he says. His trial, filmed in a park, earned him a Burnley invite and gave him confidence: “That session made me feel like I belong.” AiSCOUT turns subjective talent spotting into measurable analysis, giving more opportunities to players while helping clubs make smarter, data-driven decisions. This is changing the future of football.
52. What led to the creation of the AiSCOUT platform?
A. A lack of skilled coaches in junior football clubs.
B. A top club’s request for more fitness tracking tools.
C. An absence of youth football performance data.
D. A need to increase sponsorship for youth programs.
53. The underlined word “partiality” in paragraph 4 probably means ________
A. preference for certain players or types
B. interest in measuring player growth
C. emphasis on physical traits over skill
D. neglect of early-developing players
54. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Odeku submitted match highlights from a tournament.
B. AiSCOUT promotes fairer and more data-driven decisions.
C. AiSCOUT is mainly useful for advanced professional teams.
D. Odeku got a trial opportunity based on luck.
55. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?

Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
First it was pets, then fish. Now it’s chickens and pigs. The list of animals allowed to feed on insects is growing. A new EU law authorizes the use of insect protein in chicken and pig feed. ____56____ This is a significant milestone for an industry keen to worm its way into the animal-feed business.
Since a ban on processed animal protein was imposed in 2001 in the wake of the “mad cow” disease, soybean and fish meal have become the basis of animal feed in Europe. But their production needs lots of space and can harm the environment. ____57____
Insects are just the ticket. They are raised in vertical farms that require little land or water. They can be fed on agricultural by-products or food waste such as rotting fruit and vegetables. They’re also a natural fit. Most wild fish, birds and pigs eat insects.
The one thing going against them is price. Insect protein is two to three times more expensive than fish meal, and many times pricier than soybean. ____58____ Rabobank, a Dutch lender, predicts that global insect production will reach 500,000 tonnes a year by 2030, up from just 10,000 tonnes currently. Prices are expected to drop as well.
____59____ They may boost growth rates and immune systems as well as filling stomachs. They also provide a more sustainable alternative. This year the European Food Safety Agency has ruled that three species of insects — yellow mealworm, locusts and house crickets — are safe for humans to eat. Oddly, people seem less keen on the idea than chickens and pigs.
A. However, scaling up production may help reduce the price.
B. Some producers worry whether insects can be bred at a commercial scale.
C. Therefore feed manufacturers are actively seeking sustainable alternatives.
D. Meanwhile, research suggests insects may be more than mere feed.
E. It came into force earlier this month.
F. Despite marketing efforts, consumer acceptance of insect-based food is still low.
【答案】56. E 57. C 58. A 59. D

“It’s as much about what the giver wants ____13____ making the recipient happy.” One study found givers may skip “satisfaction-maximizing gifts” and choose to give “reaction-maximizing gifts” instead. Gifts express feelings toward others but also reflect how we see ____14____
Self-centered motives ____15____ (root) in many gift choices: Concert tickets can say I want to feel closer to you.

In a 2012 issue of Perspectives on Psychological Science, researcher Mary Helen Immordino-Yang and her team ____24____ studies about brain activity during rest. Their research, summarized in Science Daily, found that “brain activity during rest is ____25____ to self-awareness, moral judgment, learning, and memory. Just like sleep helps the brain ____26____ to work more efficiently, daydreaming may also improve mental health and thinking.”
And brain “time-outs” may also help kids learn better, possibly ____27____ wrong those adults who blame kids for daydreaming. “We focus on the outside world in education and don’t look much at inside—focused skills and attentions. But inner focus ____28____ the way we build memories, make meaning and transfer that learning into new contexts,” says Immordino-Yang. Next time you see a kid or even an adult ____30____ off into space, remember that they might actually be doing important work for their mind.

At the age of 40, Paul Counsel from Leederville in Western Australia hardly seemed on the road to wealth. As a potter and ceramics artist, he was used to getting by on whatever work was on offer. Then in 1994 he was invited to a major art exhibition in Perth, where he exhibited 40 beautiful pieces. The show was a success, but still he only sold seven, coming out with just $1500 — not including the cost of the materials:
46. Paul Counsel decided to change his financial future because ________.
A. he was rejected by a major art exhibition
B. he couldn’t get by as a potter and ceramics artist
C. his art exhibition profits were disappointing
D. he read a biography of self-made millionaires
47. According to Paul Counsel, what is the most important factor to becoming wealthy?
A. Starting a business early in life. B. Landing a well-paid job.
C. Saving every penny earned. D. Changing one’s mindset.
48. Why does Paul Counsel criticize credit and buy-now-pay-later schemes?
A. Because they prevented people from carning enough money.
B Because they created debt burdens instead of financial flexibility.
C. Because they discouraged people from investing in real estate.
D. Because they were of no benefit to people buying luxury goods.

Unlike traditional scouting where experts travel to matches hoping to find talent, AiSCOUT works with teams like Chelsea and Burnley to find hidden players.
D Odeku got a trial opportunity based on luck.
55. Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
