Mathea Allansmith isn’t your typical grandmother. She’s the oldest woman in the world to have completed a marathon. She was 92 years 194 days old when she crossed the finish line at the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, setting the record for the oldest female to complete a marathon.
Mathea, now 94, of Koloa, Hawaii, USA, stays in shape all year round by running seven days a week, no matter what the weather is. Come rain or shine, she covers 36 miles every week, even when she’s on holiday. The retired doctor didn’t take up running until she was 46 years old —after a friend suggested running two miles per day.
“The Honolulu Marathon is my favorite marathon mainly because it doesn’t close the gate at a certain time, which allows even the slowest runner to finish the race,” she said. “It’s one of the best races. Fantastic registration (注册), set-up and management make it a joy to run the race.”
Mathea, who doesn’t allow her age to slow her down, thinks she is the happiest person when she’s on the road. She enjoys running for miles and waving and saying hello to the people she passes. To stay in shape, Mathea keeps a steady training routine (惯例) . “I train all year round but increase the mileage 18 weeks before a marathon,” she said.
Mathea said it was her career as a doctor that allowed her to understand how her body and mind respond to diet and exercise. “I see the direct relation between moving and health,” she said. “It is important to reduce stress rather than ignoring it without a plan on how to do so. Of course, exercise of any kind is a natural stress reducer.”
Mathea thought getting through the finish line and winning a Guinness World Record title was the excitement of her life. “My family completely surprised me after the 2022 Honolulu Marathon, in which I achieved the world record, by wearing matching T-shirts stating my achievements,” she said.
4. What do we know about Mathea from the first two paragraphs?
A. She used to be in poor health.
B. She is the oldest to win a marathon.
C. She runs daily regardless of the weather.
D. She was encouraged by her patient to run.
5. Why is Mathea keen on the Honolulu Marathon?
A. It gives winners the best awards.
B. It provides runners with quality service..
C. It has no time limit for runners to finish.
D. It allows runners to set a world record easily.
6. What led to Mathea’s understanding of the connection between moving and health?
A. Her professional experience. B. Her training courses.
C. Her views on stress in life. D. Her hobby from young.
7. What message does Mathea’s story deliver?
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Interest is the best teacher.
C. Age is no barrier to success.
D. Ups and downs make one strong.
C
When we meet someone for the first time, we usually get a vague sense of what kind of person they are by the way they shake hands, talk, or walk. In the age of social networking, however, first impressions are sometimes made even before we actually meet someone in person -- that is, by looking at their profile photo.
According to a recent study, these social images say a lot about our personality. In the study, a group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in the US used software to analyze the profile pictures of 66,000 users of one US social platform. At the same time, about 434 participants were asked to complete a survey about their personality type.
According to the results, open people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use objects such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photo because they enjoy new and exciting experiences. Meanwhile, neurotic people often hold back their negative emotions. They try to avoid showing their face; instead, they use an image of something like a pet, a car, or a building. That’s because neurotic people are strongly influenced by the ‘‘strong social norm (规范) against a very sad or angry appearance in profile pictures.’’
Apart from the objects in profile pictures, the colors used in them also give us some information about the photo’s owner. For example, extraverts were found to have the most colorful profile images, as they want to emphasize their personality and show themselves off.
Daniel Preoiuc-Pietro from the University of Pennsylvania wrote in the research paper, ‘‘Social media photos usually represent an extension of one’s self, but they also allow a user to shape his or her own personality and idealized view.’’ So, when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of image we’d like to show. After all, first impressions always last.
8. Why do neurotic people often avoid showing their face in their profile photo?
A. Because they are fond of pets, cars and buildings.
B. Because they want to enjoy new experiences.
C. Because they don’t want to show their negative emotions.
D. Because they are not confident about themselves.
9 What does the underlined word in Para.4 refer to?
A. Open people. B. Neurotic people.
C. Negative people. D. Popular people.
10. What is the writer’s attitude towards the choice of a profile photo?
A. Casual. B. Cautious. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
11. What does this text mainly talk about?
A. The importance of the first impression.
B. Some advice on how to choose a profile photo.
C. The difference between open people and neurotic people.
D. The relationship between one’s profile photo and his personality.
D
When we buy something new, we get rid of what’s old. That cycle of consumption(消费)has made electronics waste the world’s fastest-growing solid-waste stream, which is expected to grow as the world upgrades to 5G. However, less than a quarter of U. S. electronic waste is recycled, the rest ending up as rubbish, posing environmental risks.
Part of the problem concerns rule. In states without laws banning (禁止) electronics from the regular trash, electronics often end up in garbage. Even when e-waste rules exist, it’s left to consumers to handle their old devices properly. But recycling them can be a pain. People have to take their electronics to a store, which may pay them for it or charge them to get rid of it. Many consumers simply throw their devices into the trash or throw them in a drawer.
One solution is to make electronics last as long as they once did. Yet, technology companies are speeding the pace of being deserted. “It’s a strategy by producers to force us into shorter upgrade cycles,” said Kyle Wiens, the founder of iFixit, which publishes do-it-yourself repair guides.
Some environmental groups say big companies like Apple and Samsung should pick up the cost of recycling the devices they sell. Lawmakers have passed Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws, which require producers to establish and fund systems to recycle or collect deserted products.
Some companies are increasing their recycling efforts on their own. For example, Apple in 2018 introduced Daisy, a smartphone-recycling robot that can take apart 200 iPhones every hour. But that's a drop in the bucket compared with the 50 million tons of e-waste produced globally last year.
12. Which of the following statements is true?
A. A large number of electronics end up as waste.
B. E-waste problems will be solved if laws are made.
C. Most people prefer to sell their old electronics to stores.
D. E-waste is the biggest threat to environment.
13. According to Kyle Wiens, technology companies________.
A are trying to collect their deserted products
B. have a short life cycle because of the market
C. intend to shorten the life cycle of products
D. struggle to provide goods with good quality
14. What might be the writer’s attitude towards the future of the e-waste recycling?
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned. C. Confident. D. Doubtful.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Choice for Recycled Electronics
B. Solutions to the Mountain of E-waste
C. Bad Effects of E-waste on the Environment
D. Companies on Duty for Nature Protection

It was New Year’s Day, the first day of the year. Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way. The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, was, as usual, curt (简短失礼的,简略的) to my polite “Happy New Year.” He nodded and I sat in front of him.
Minutes passed but nothing happened.
Then very uncertain and embarrassed I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register (登记簿). After a few minutes he took my form and from his cabinet he took out a very thick file from which he started filling in my details. I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking if we were still filling in forms and registers.
After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I said the words, I felt as if a bombshell had fallen on him. He shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!”
Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling that when customers like me come, they are always in a hurry to get their work done.

9. What does the underlined word in Para.4 refer to?
A. Open people. B. Neurotic people.
C. Negative people. D. Popular people.
10. What is the writer’s attitude towards the choice of a profile photo?
A. Casual. B. Cautious. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
11. What does this text mainly talk about?
A. The importance of the first impression.
B. Some advice on how to choose a profile photo.
C. The difference between open people and neurotic people.
D. The relationship between one’s profile photo and his personality.
C 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据最后一段中“when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of image we’d like to show. After all, first impressions always last.(在选择照片时,也许我们应该先问自己想要展示什么样的形象。毕竟,第一印象总是持续的。)”可知,作者对个人照片选择的态度是“小心谨慎”。故选B。
【11题详解】

A. are trying to collect their deserted products
B. have a short life cycle because of the market
C. intend to shorten the life cycle of products
D. struggle to provide goods with good quality
14. What might be the writer’s attitude towards the future of the e-waste recycling?
A. Positive. B. Unconcerned. C. Confident. D. Doubtful.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Choice for Recycled Electronics
B. Solutions to the Mountain of E-waste
C. Bad Effects of E-waste on the Environment
D. Companies on Duty for Nature Protection
A 13. C 14. D 15. B

(许多消费者只是把他们的设备扔进垃圾桶或扔进抽屉里)”可知,C项“大多数人喜欢把他们的旧电器卖给商店” 错误,排除;根据第一段“However, less than a quarter of U. S. electronic waste is recycled, the rest ending up as rubbish, posing environmental risks. 故选A项。

根据最后一段提到“For instance, Apple in 2018 introduced Daisy, a smartphone-recycling robot that can take apart 200 iPhones every hour. But that’s a drop in the bucket compared with the 50 million tons of e-waste generated globally last year.

Then very uncertain and embarrassed, I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him.

根据文章第一段中“Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way. (对我来说幸运的是,那天是休息日,所以我打算去银行把事情处理完)”可知,作者想在新年第一天去银行处理一下事务。根据空前的“get my bank work”可知,空处为非谓语动词担当宾语补足语,指的是处理事务,因此选择单词do,和宾语my bank work之间存在被动关系,用过去分词形式。故填done。
②考查副词。根据第一段中“The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, was, as usual, curt (简短失礼的,简略的) to my polite “Happy New Year.” (银行的工作人员是一位留着白胡子的老先生,他像往常一样,对我礼貌的“新年快乐”很敷衍)”可知,作者的打招呼是礼貌的。空处修饰动词said,故用单词polite“礼貌的”的副词形式politely,作状语。故填politely。
③考查形容词。根据第一段中“It was New Year’s Day, the first day of the year. Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way. (这是新年,一年的第一天。幸运的是,那天是休息日,所以我想把银行的工作做完)”可知,当作者来到银行时,心情很好,觉得幸运。所以选择形容词fortunate“幸运的”,作表语。故填fortunate。
④考查动词。根据第二段“Minutes passed but nothing happened. (几分钟过去了,但什么也没发生)”可知,此处指的是几分钟“过去了”。go by“时间的流逝”;根据上文nodded可知,句子描述过去的事情,时态为一般过去时,谓语用过去式went。故填went。
⑤考查形容词。根据第三段中“Then very uncertain and embarrassed, I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him. (然后非常不确定和尴尬,我把我的表格和小册子放在他面前)”可知,空处表示“尴尬的”,所以选择单词embarrassment,用其形容词embarrassed“尴尬的”。故填embarrassed。
⑥考查动词。根据第四段中“The moment I said the words, I felt as if a bombshell had fallen on him. (我说出这句话的那一刻,我觉得好像一颗重磅炸弹落在了他身上)”可知,此处指的是炸弹“落在了”他身上,故选择单词fall“落下”,时态用过去完成时,从句谓语用had fallen。故填had fallen。
⑦考查形容词。根据第四段中“After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. (等了几分钟后,我表现出了各种不耐烦的迹象,我问他我的工作完成了没有)”可知,作者此时已经有点不耐烦。所以选择单词patient,加否定前缀im,构成单词impatient,意为“不耐烦的”。故填impatient。
⑧考查形容词。根据第五段中“Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. (就在这时,我看见了他早上喝的那杯茶,它已经在那儿放了十分钟了,一动也没动)”可知,空处表示“没有动”。所以选择单词touch,用形容词untouched“未动的”。故填untouched。
⑨考查动词。根据第五段中“Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling that when customers like me come, they are always in a hurry to get their work done. (突然间,我明白了这个在这个柜台工作了不知多少年的人,面对像我这样总是急着把工作做完的顾客时的心情)”可知,作者突然就理解了这个工作人员,意识到自己应该是“体贴的”,所以选择单词think,用其形容词thoughtful“体贴的”。故填understand。
⑩考查动词。根据第五段中“Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling that when customers like me come, they are always in a hurry to get their work done. (突然间,我明白了这个在这个柜台工作了不知多少年的人,面对像我这样总是急着把工作做完的顾客时的心情)”可知,作者理解了工作人员,所以认为自己不应该催促他。所以选择单词push“鞭策,督促”,情态动词之后用动词原形。故填push。
【47题详解】
考查细节理解。根据文章第一段中“Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way. (对我来说幸运的是,那天是休息日,所以我打算去银行把事情处理完)”可知,作者去银行是想把银行的事情处理完。故答案为He got his bank work out of the way./He wen to the bank to deal with his bank problems.
根据文章第四段“After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I said the words, I felt as if a bombshell had fallen on him. He shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!” (等了几分钟后,我表现出了各种不耐烦的迹象,我问他我的工作完成了没有。我说出这句话的那一刻,我觉得好像一颗重磅炸弹落在了他身上。他喊道:“什么也做不了,这需要时间!”)”可知,当遇到作者这样的人来办理业务的时候,他一定觉得很焦虑或者紧张,又来了一个人,没有耐心,只会督促他先办理他的业务。故答案为He must be feeling so worried/upset/anxious/nervous that “here comes another person who will push me for doing his work first.”
根据文章最后一段“Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling that when customers like me come, they are always in a hurry to get their work done. I might say to him, “Sir, you please have your tea; I am not in a hurry.” He might look up at me for the first time, give me a rare smile and say, “Thanks, but it is an everyday affair with me; you are not in a hurry but somebody else will come who will be in a hurry.” and then continue his work at hand.
