Adelaide schoolgirl Tilly Williams, aged 11, has broken a world distance running record, beating other girls who were eight years older than her to run 5000m in just 17 minutes and 22.7 seconds.
The Parkside Primary student beat the previous record by 19 seconds, making her the fastest distance runner under the age of 19 across 60 countries. Tilly started running just two years ago and has already shot straight to the top. When some of her friends informed her of the international record, she decided to give it a try while competing at the SA State Championships. Since then, she has run two to three times a week with her and, Mark Williams, or at the Adelaide Harriers Athletics Club.
Tilly has been inspired by runners Caitlin Adams, Tara Palm, and her favourite book character, Matilda by Roald Dahl. “I could really relate to the main character Matilda because she set herself goals and really had to work hard to achieve them.” she said.
Tilly is set to represent South Australia in Tasmania on Friday at the National 10-12 years Track&Field Championships competition at Launceston. She also has dreams of competing in the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. “In the long-term, maybe, but in the short-term, it’s just achieving a goal and then getting to the next one and then achieving that: it’s a long way down,” she said.
“You never think that anyone’s going to get a world record at this age, at any age really, it’s just surreal,” Mr Williams, Tilly’s dad said. “We’re very proud. It’s very important to recognise these achievements, but also to stay very much grounded and just enjoy the other pursuits that she likes. She loves her running, but she does so many other things as well and I think it’s really important that the focus is on life rather than just one thing.”
4. Which words can best describe Tilly from Paragraph 2?
A. Excellent and courageous. B. Caring and grateful.
C. Ambitious and reliable. D. Daring and generous.
5. Why did Tilly mention Matilda?
A. Matilda was ambitious. B. Matilda was brave enough.
C. Matilda influenced her greatly. D. Matilda was an independent person.

B. To start a professional career in athletics.
C. To represent South Australia in a national competition.
D. To become a member of the Adelaid e Harriers Athletics Club.
7. What does the underlined word “surreal” in Paragraph 5 most likely mean?
A. Expected. B. Very unusual. C. Disappointing. D. Completely normal.

Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia (痴呆), according to a new study.
“We found that aging was associated with a decline in the amount of the deepest stages of sleep, known as slow-wave sleep. We then found that people with greater declines in slow-wave sleep over time had a higher risk of getting dementia over the next 17 years of follow-up,” said Matthew Pase, senior author of the study.
Slow-wave sleep is the third and fourth stages of sleep, which is important for brain health. During this stage, the body removes unwanted or harmful materials from the brain. “For the brain, this deep sleep is thought to be the most restorative,” said Dr Richard Isaacson, who wasn’t involved in the study.
The researchers wanted to know whether chronic (慢性的) reductions in slow-wave sleep over time are linked to dementia risk in humans and whether dementia-related processes in the brain may contribute to getting less of this type of sleep. They studied 346 people with an average age of 69 and completed two overnight sleep studies—one between 1995 and 1998 and the second between 1998 and 2001—during which their sleep was monitored. The researchers also investigated whether any change in the amount of slow-wave sleep that participants got was associated with developing dementia up to 17 years after they completed the sleep studies. By that time, 52 participants had been diagnosed with dementia. Each percentage decrease in slow-wave sleep per year was linked to a 27 percent increased risk of developing dementia. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss accelerated (加速) from age 60, peaked from ages 75 to 80and slowed afterwards.
“This is an important study yet again showing the impact of quality of sleep on a person’s risk of cognitive decline and dementia,” Isaacson said. “It’s important to not only pay attention to the total amount of sleep a person gets each night, but also monitor sleep quality as best as possible.”
8. What can we learn from the new study?
A. The older you are the less sleep you will have.
B. Slow-wave sleep has been linked to the risk of dementia.
C. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss keeps going up with age.
D. The amount of sleep has an impact on the risk of dementia.
9. How did researchers get what they wanted?
A. By making a comparison. B. By introducing a concept.
C. By referring to another study. D. By making a survey.
10. What did Dr Richard Isaacson suggest?
A. Sleep quality needs more attention.
B. We should have enough sleep.
C. The elderly should sleep more than the young.
D. The amount of sleep is more important than sleep quality.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Sports. B. Health. C. Education. D. Environment.
D
No civilization is complete without legends about outer space. Our need to challenge the limits of what we know has made humans try to discover new worlds. However, outer space exploration can’t be carried out without heavy investments (投资), which can sometimes become a burden for any country or institution. But this could be about to change.
Blue Origin, the space exploration company founded by American Jeff Bezos, made history on Nov23, 2015. It successfully launched a rocket to the edge of space and brought it back to Earth for a safe landing. The rocket, named New Shepard, may very well be the first successful reusable rocket in space flight history. The next step is to prove it can fly again, making sure it is indeed reusable.
“We’re getting closer to a new era of space tourism,” commented a US magazine. Reusable rockets will help companies such as Blue Origin to achieve “a cost-saving means” of transporting humans into space and back, said the magazine.
Previously, whenever a rocket had been sent into orbit, it had always been destroyed or lost in the process. Even the space shuttle, which returned to the ground undamaged and on its own power, was only partly reusable. This problem has made a single launch mission extremely expensive. A completely reusable system will make space travel more affordable and sustainable
Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX in private space exploration, called the idea of a reusable system“the breakthrough needed to completely change access to space”.
According to an article in The Atlantic magazine, New Shepard’ s success has ended “a private space race” between Bezos and Musk. However, according to Emily Calandrelli, host and producer of Exploration Outer Space on Fox, it is not completely fair “to compare the two companies’ achievements to date” because “their successes could be considered separate unique milestones on two different paths”. Blue Origin is aiming to sell directly to buyers(wealthy space tourists) while SpaceX is aiming to sell to large companies and the government (NASA, the Air Force). These two ideas require very different rockets.
12. Why is outer space exploration difficult to achieve according to the text?
A. There are no legends about it. B. It needs a lot of money.
C. There are no good rockets. D. Humans don’t have the technology
13. Compared with the past, what does reusable rockets enable companies like Blue Origin to achieve?
A. A newer means of running a business. B. A safer landing back to Earth.
C. A smaller investment to make profits. D. A less competition with other companies.
14. What did Emily Calandrelli mean about the two companies in the last paragraph?
A. They have the same goals. B. They are similar in technologies.
C. They haven’t ended their space race. D. They have different target customers.
15. What can be the best title of the text?
A. The New Form of Space Travel
B. The Rise of Private Space Exploration Companies
C. Comparing Achievements in Private Space Exploration
D. The First Successful Reusable Rocket in Space Flight History

In a busy city, an old man rode his tricycle(三轮脚踏车) along the street. His face was full of the lines of time. His hands held the handlebars with care. He was returning home from the market, and his tricycle was filled with fresh produce.
When he was wondering how much he could sell the produce for, he got distracted(思想不集中的) and the tricycle hit a car which was parked by the roadside. The old man's heart sank as he surveyed the long scratch(划痕) damaging the new paintwork of the expensive car. He stood there with worry and regret on his face. He knew the value of such a car and the potential cost of the damage. "I can't afford this," he whispered to himself sadly.
Just then a stranger approached the old man. The stranger, dressed in a sharp suit, looked at the scene and immediately realized the situation. "The paintwork is damaged. Can you afford to pay for the damage?" he asked gently. The old man shook his head and looked down. "No, I can't," he replied.
The stranger looked around and spoke in a low tone. "If you can't afford it, why don't you leave? Do you wait for the owner to come?" It was more of a suggestion than a question. A small smile appeared on the stranger's mouth.
The old man hesitated, torn between his sense of responsibility and the practicality of the stranger's advice. After a moment of internal struggle, he made his decision. He pulled an old plastic bag out of his pocket. He put all the money inside, which was less than twenty dollars, under the wiper(雨刷) of the car. Then, he felt the scratch on the car with his hands. With one last look at the damaged car, he began to push his tricycle away, glancing back every few steps.

A. The older you are, the less sleep you will have.

B 13. C 14. D 15. D

根据第一段“However, outer-space exploration can't be carried out without heavy investments (投资), which can sometimes become a burden for any country or institution. (然而,外层空间的探索离不开大量的投资,这有时会成为任何国家或机构的负担。)”可知,太空探索难以实现是因为需要大量资金投入,这有时对任何国家或机构都是负担。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Reusable rockets will help companies such as Blue Origin to achieve“a cost-saving means” of transporting humans into space and back, said the magazine. (该杂志称,可重复使用的火箭将帮助蓝色起源等公司实现将人类运送到太空和返回的“节省成本的手段”。)”可知,可重复使用的火箭能帮助像 Blue Origin 这样的公司实现一种节省成本的将人类送入太空并返回的方式,也就是以较小投资获取利润。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Blue Origin is aiming to sell directly to buyers(wealthy space tourists) while SpaceX is aiming to sell to large companies and the government(NASA, the Air Force). These two ideas require very different rockets.

Dear Mr. Smith,
With the date of your return approaching, I’ve prepared a special gift, a set of Chinese paper cuttings for you.
Originated from ancient handcraft arts, Chinese paper cuttings have been considered a unique way to convey good wishes. Chinese characters, “Fu”, “Shou” and “Xi” represent fortune, longevity and happiness respectively. 47.
Just then, a stranger approached the old man.

After the old man went away, the stranger took out a car key. With a press of a button, the car door opened. The stranger sat in the seat, silent for a moment before remembering all the money under the wiper. He knew it was the old man's hard-earned money from a day's work. So he wanted to return the money to him. Then he started the car and drove in the direction the old man had left. Within a few minutes, he caught up with the old man.
The stranger pulled over and got out of the car. The old man recognized him and stopped. The old man was shocked as he saw that the car in front of him was the one he had hit. The stranger walked towards the old man and said, “I am actually the owner of this car. Your sincerity and sense of responsibility have infected me. I must return the money to you. You have left a heavıer mark on my heart than the scratch on the car.” After saying that, the stranger put the money on the old man's tricycle and drove away.
