After my shipwreck, I woke to find myself tied to the ground with countless tiny ropes. Hundreds of little people, no taller than six inches, were climbing over me. I roared in surprise, and they scattered like frightened mice. Soon, they returned with bows and shot arrows that felt like needle pricks.
Their king ordered me to be fed. Dozens of Lilliputians brought baskets of meat and loaves of bread—each loaf was the size of a pea to me! I ate politely, amazed by their courage. Later, they built a huge wooden platform with wheels to transport me to their capital. The strongest horses pulled while I slept, drugged by their wine.
When I awoke, I was chained inside an abandoned temple. The king visited, and I knelt to show respect. Though we couldn’t understand each other's language, I learned their word for “friend”—Hlum—and promised not to harm them. Over time, my gentle behavior earned their trust.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named Deep Seek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as Open AI’s GPT-40, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of Open AI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but Rl improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than Open AI’s model. A simple version of Rl can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-Rl is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U. S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U. S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a Deep Seek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
31. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To compare Chinese and American AI technologies. B. To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.

A. It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B. It only works with expensive tools.
C. It copies answers from other AIs . D. It becomes better through practice.
33. Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research?
A. To help Chinese companies. B. To build more computer chips.
C. Because they were worried about DeepSeek-R1. D. To hire German scientists.
34. What does the writer think is the most important for success?
A. Creativity and hard work. B. Smart ideas and expensive tools.

According to some old Chinese stories, there once was an ancient emperor named Shennong. At that time, people could not tell the difference between medicinal and poisonous (有毒的) plants. When they got sick, there was no medicine to treat their illnesses. Many sick people could only wait for death.
To save his people, Shennong decided to find and test out different plants. He and his followers set out on a journey in search of medicinally effective plants. Once, they saw a large forest on a high cliff (悬崖) from a distance. There must be many different kinds of plants, but they couldn’t find a way to the cliff. Suddenly, they saw some monkeys climbing along the vines and trees hanging down from the cliff. Shennong was inspired by the scene. He asked his followers to cut down the tree trunks and vines. Together they built scaffold (脚手架), with its help, they climbed to the cliff and collected many valuable plants.
Each time the team found a new type of plant, Shennong would taste it himself. Some plants made him sleepy. Some caused him to suffer pains in his stomach. Some made him tremble (颤抖) all over. After searching and testing over a long period of time, he and his followers discovered hundreds of medicinal plants.
As they continued their search, the team found a plant with small yellow flowers on a mountain. When a young man reached for it, the plant moved like a worm. Shennong picked off one piece from the plant in order to taste it. Other people tried to stop him, but Shennong said calmly, “It looks like a medicinal plant. I have to test it, or some people may misuse it.”
Suddenly, Shennong’s face turned pale and he fell on the ground. Blood flowed from his mouth and nose. Even after he was given the leaves from other medicinal plants, he was still not able to recover. The emperor soon took his last breath. People covered him with thousands of flowers. From then on, they called him the “Emperor of Medicine”.

C. To explain how computer chips work. D. To encourage students to become programmers.
32. What does “improves by itself” mean in the article?

Hi, everyone. I’m a student in Grade 8 from Sunshine Middle School. We will have a Reading Week in our school.
It’s important and necessary for us to read. When we read, it opens our minds to new ideas and worlds. In addition, reading improves our language skills and helps us think more clearly. I read for 30 minutes every night before sleep. I visit our school library weekly to borrow books, and sometimes I buy them from bookstores.
My favourite book is The Little Prince. This fairy tale tells the story of a prince who travels across planets. Through his journey, we learn about love, friendship, and what truly matters in life. Its simple words hide deep meanings that touch my heart every time.
