I’ve just arrived from New York City at the airport in Rome and already I’m lost, wandering left and right and searching for the right exit. I’m supposed to meet my wife Elvira, who lives in Italy now, and then drive to Guardia Sanframondi, the little town where we own a house, to meet our newborn granddaughter Lucia, now all of 11 weeks old.
But I takes a wrong turn, and then another, all in vain. I’m lost for 15 minutes, then 30, and finally about 45, unable to get my passport properly scanned and pick up my luggage. This is more than mildly inconvenient. After all, I’ve just flown more than 4,000 miles, a flight into my future.
But suddenly I see Elvira, who is holding baby Lucia in her arms. I’m found.
I stay in Italy for three weeks. It’s impossible for me to get enough of Lucia, and so I follow a strict agenda(日程). Hold Lucia in my arms. Kiss Lucia all over her face. Wheel Lucia in her carriage in the most public places available. Make faces at her and even sillier gestures and sounds.
Today, at 70, I’m a permanent resident of Italy, with Lucia living a five-minute walk away. We visit her at her house and she visits us at ours almost every day. In most American families, adult children with grandchildren live in different towns and states far away. Italian families, on the other hand, are more likely to live near each other. Sometimes three generations here even stay together in the same home. I’ve happily turned my life upside-down to be a grandpa Italian-style. Lucia is just what I need right about now. If I’m lucky, I’ll be just what she needs, too.
4. Why does the author go to Guardia Sanframondi?
A. To meet his wife. B. To decorate his house.
C. To explore the countryside. D. To see his granddaughter.
5. What happened to the author at the airport?
A. He lost his way. B. He missed his flight.
C. He couldn’t find his luggage. D. He had his passport stolen.
6. What can we infer about the author from the fourth paragraph?
A. He gets enough of Lucia. B. He sets a high goal for Lucia.
C. He loves his granddaughter. D. He is forced to make Lucia happy.
7. How does the author feel about the Italian way of life?
A. He’s worried. B. He’s satisfied. C. He’s curious. D. He’s uncertain.
D 5. A 6. C 7. B
根据文章第一段中“I’m supposed to meet my wife Elvira, who lives in Italy now, and then drive to Guardia Sanframondi, the little town where we own a house, to meet our newborn granddaughter Lucia, now all of 11 weeks old.(我要去见我的妻子埃尔维拉,她现在住在意大利,然后开车去Guardia Sanframondi,我们在那里有一栋房子,去见我们刚出生的孙女露西亚,她现在已经11周大了。)”
根据第二段“But I take a wrong turn, and then another, all in vain. I’m lost for 15 minutes, then 30, and finally about 45, unable to get my passport properly scanned and pick up my luggage. This is more than mildly inconvenient. (但我转错了弯,然后又转了一个,都是徒劳的。我迷路了15分钟,然后是30分钟,最后是45分钟,无法进行护照扫描和收拾行李。这真是有点不方便了。)”可知,作者在机场迷路了。故选A.
根据第四段“I stay in Italy for three weeks. It’s impossible for me to get enough of Lucia, and so I follow a strict agenda(日程). Hold Lucia in my arms. Kiss Lucia all over her face. Wheel Lucia in her carriage in the most public places available. Make faces at her and even sillier gestures and sounds.(我在意大利待三个星期。我不可能对露西娅有足够的了解,因此我遵循严格的议程。把露西亚抱在我怀里。吻遍露西亚的整个脸。把露西亚推到可能得公共场所。对她做鬼脸,甚至做出更愚蠢的手势和声音。)”可知,作者很喜欢他的孙女。故选C。
4. 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“I’ve happily turned my life upside-down to be a grandpa Italian-style. Lucia is just what I need right about now. If I’m lucky, I’ll be just what she needs, too.(我很高兴地把我的生活颠倒过来做一个意大利式的爷爷。露西亚正是我现在需要的。如果我幸运的话,我也是她所需要的。)”可知,作者对意大利的生活方式感到满意。故选B。

There is no need to head to the movie theater or download the video game app: Angry Birds can be found right in your backyard this summer—if you live in the suburb(市郊). Virginia Tech researchers recently find that birds that live in suburban areas exhibit significantly higher levels of anger than those living in country. The results were recently published in Biology Letters.
“A possible reason for this is that these birds have less space but better resources to defend,” said Scott Davies, an expert at biological sciences in the College of Science. “Living near humans provides better food and shelter, but it also means more competition for these limited resources.”
The Virginia Tech and Radford University campuses served as the suburban sites due to their levels of human impact. Rural(乡村的) sites included Kentland Farm and Heritage Park. In these settings, the researchers played a recording of a male song sparrow(歌雀) and observed how the birds responded to a simulated(仿造的) intrusion from a neighbor.
Campus birds showed a higher level of aggression: they approached and remained near the speaker, beat their wings wildly, engaged in loud singing and then began to produce ‘soft song’—a term that researchers use to describe the quiet noise that a bird makes, which indicates an attack is to be launched soon.
Though rural birds still responded to a song intrusion, they did not respond as vigorously.
The researchers placed small leg bands on the birds to identify individuals, and recorded each individual’s responses twice, several weeks apart. The suburban birds reacted more fiercely on both occasions, showing that their increased aggression persists throughout a breeding season.
8. The study by Virginia Tech researchers suggests that ________.
A. there are more angry birds in suburban areas than in rural areas
B. angry birds prefer to live in suburban areas instead of in country
C. birds living in suburban areas tend to show a higher level of anger
D. birds in rural areas prefer to live near humans for food and shelter
9. The researchers measured the level of different birds’ aggression by ________.
A. recording the reactions of song sparrows to their neighbors’ intrusion
B. placing small leg bands on the birds to identify different individuals
C. observing the birds’ responses to a recording of male song sparrows
D. approaching the birds in order to listen to their soft and quiet songs
10. The underlined word “vigorously” in paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.
A. mildly B. violently
C. helplessly D. gently
11. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. argue and persuade B. compare and assess
C. discuss and examine D. inform and explain
C 9. C 10. B 11. D

The researchers measured the level of different birds’ aggression by ________. 的转化形式 how the birds responded to…,和a recording of male song sparrows 在原文中的替换词a simulated(仿造的) intrusion from a neighbor。 The researchers played a recording of a male song sparrow and observed how the birds responded to a simulated intrusion from a neighbor,我们知道,研究人员通过播放了一只雄性麻雀的录音,并观察了鸟儿对模拟入侵的反应来测量不同鸟类的攻击程度的,所以我们可以选择本题的正确答案C。
D
“It’s raining cats and dogs!” Although this phrase is not very common in England any more, it clearly shows how we don’t always say what we mean. One thing that is often frustrating (灰心的) for language learners is that they understand every word in a sentence and yet the meaning remains unclear—like this sentence that actually means “it’s raining very heavily!” However, it’s not just idioms that cause difficulties for people learning English.
The British are often considered to be polite but this can be very confusing for non-native speakers. We often don’t say what we are thinking—in fact we often say the opposite! Here’s an example that will hopefully explain what I mean: “You should come round for tea!”
British people are less open than people from other cultures, so we aren’t as quick to invite people into our homes. This phrase is one of those that we say but often don’t really mean, so when no further details are given, you can probably assume (认为) it was made in the name of politeness! But how does this compare to other countries?
When I lived in India, lots of people would invite me into their homes but I always assumed that they were just being polite. Of course, I was wrong. The invitations were almost always genuine, and people expected me to visit them. I was always surprised by how welcoming people were. In fact, I think I spent more time at other people’s houses than my own!
In England, we often think it’s polite to offer or suggest something even if we don’t actually want to do it, while in other cultures people are more direct. Perhaps if English people just say what they were thinking, things would be a lot easier—especially for non-native speakers!
12. The example “It’s raining cats and dogs!” is mentioned to show that ______.
A. it is time for people protect these pet animals
B. the weather condition in England is rather awful
C. what British people say is different from what they think
D. it is difficult for non-native learner to understand idioms
13. What do people from other cultures think of British people’s politeness?
A. Direct and honest. B. Too traditional to accept.
C. Serious and formal. D. Difficult to understand.
14. Which of the following best explains “genuine” underlined in Paragraph 4?
A. personal. B. real. C. informal. D. special.
15. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To encourage people to show politeness.
B. To teach people how to avoid misunderstandings.
C. To discuss how to learn English idioms effectively.
D. To advise people to understand politeness culturally.
C 13. D 14. B 15. D

根据文章第一段“Although this phrase is not very common in England any more, it clearly shows how we don’t always say what we mean.(虽然这个短语在英国已经不常见了,但它清楚地表明我们并不总是表达我们的意思)”可以推断,英国人所说的和他们所想的不一样。
根据文章第二段“The British are often considered to be polite but this can be very confusing for non-native speakers. (英国人通常被认为是有礼貌的,但这对于非英语国家的人来说可能会很困惑。)”可知,其他文化背景的人对于英国人的礼貌是很难理解的。故选D。
【14题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第四段划线句前句“When I lived in India, lots of people would invite me into their homes but I always assumed that they were just being polite. Of course, I was wrong.(我在印度生活的时候,很多人会邀请我去他们家,但我总是认为他们只是出于礼貌。当然,我错了。)”可知,在印度这些邀请几乎都是真实的。从而猜测genuine为“真实的”之意。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。文章主要为我们介绍了在不同的文化环境下人们对于礼貌的看法是不同的,即礼貌取决于我们所处的文化。可知,本文的目的是建议人们从文化上理解礼貌。故选D。

We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the summer vacation, so I didn’t have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends? Would If it in? Would I survive in this strange new world? Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn’t know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading. I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
The none day, at all boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said. “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us?” “Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise.
Today at 70, I’m a permanent resident of Italy, with Lucia living a five-minute walk away.
7 How does the author feel about the Italian way of life?
A. He’s worried. B. He’s satisfied. C. He’s curious. D. He’s uncertain.
C
9 The researchers measured the level of different birds’ aggression by ________.
A. recording the reactions of song sparrows to their neighbors’ intrusion
B. placing small leg bands on the birds to identify different individuals

A Direct and honest.

My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible.
We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.
