A
John Cruitt, 62, spent decades tracking down his third-grade teacher.
He wanted to talk with Cecile Doyle about 1958 — the year his mother, who was seriously ill, passed away.
Her death came just days before Christmas. Cruitt had been expecting to go home from school and decorate the Christmas tree.
Doyle tells Cruitt at StoryCorps in Monroe, N. Y. “And you just don’t know how you’re going to go on without that person.”
When Cruitt returned to school, Doyle waited until all of the other children left the room at the end of the day, and told him that she was there if he needed her.
“Then you kissed me on the head,” Cruitt says. “And I felt that things really would be OK.”
“Well, Cruitt, I’m so glad that I could be there with you for that time,” says Doyle, 82.
Decades after his mother’s death, Cruitt began to think more and more of Doyle. He finally wrote a letter:
Dear Mrs. Doyle,
If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. My name is John Cruitt, and I was in your third-grade class during the 1958-1959 school year. Two days before Christmas, my mother passed away, and you told me that you were there if I needed you. I hope life has been as kind to you as you were to me.
God bless you.
John Cruitt
Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. Her husband, who passed away this August, was struggling with Parkinson’s disease.
“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter — I was afraid my penmanship wasn’t going to meet your standards,” Cruitt says as Doyle laughs.
“John, what can I say — I’m just glad that we made a difference in each other’s life.”
1.Before Cruitt wrote the letter, he ________.
A.knew Doyle’s husband had passed away
B.believed Doyle was leading a happy life
C.considered it embarrassing to write to Doyle
D.was unsure whether Doyle could receive the letter
2.Doyle believed the letter ________.
A.was a gift coming late
B.came at just the right time
C.lifted her confidence greatly
D.served as a reminder of her husband
3.The underlined word “penmanship” probably means “________”.
A.pen repairer B.pen friend C.handwriting D.biography
根据John Cruitt写信的第一句“If you are not the Cecile Doyle who taught English at Emerson School in Kearny, N. J., then I’m embarrassed, and you can neglect the letter. (如果你不是在新泽西州科尔尼的爱默生学校教英语的Cecile Doyle,那么我很尴尬,你可以忽略这封信。) ”可推知John Cruitt写信的时候不确定Doyle是否能收到这封信,故选D。
2.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Doyle says his letter, which arrived in February, could not have come at a better time. (Doyle说,他的这封信是在2月份收到的,来得正是时候。)”可知Doyle相信这封信来的正是时候,故选B。
3.词义猜测题。根据上文“Well the funny thing is, when I finally wrote to you again after 54 years, I typed the letter (好吧,有趣的是,当我54年后终于再次给你写信时,我把信打了出来)”可推断出下文意思是“我担心我的书写达不到你的标准”所以penmanship意思是“书写”,和handwriting同义,故选C。
B
In a quiet village near Chengdu, 26-year-old Lin Zhipeng stands out as the only young resident among elderly neighbors. While most youth migrate to cities, Lin chooses rural life, bonding with seniors who affectionately call him “Dasenzi” (“big grandson” in Sichuan dialect). This nickname also titles his Douyin account, where his videos documenting inter-generational interactions have accumulated over 700,000 followers.
When interacting with the seniors in the village, Lin observed that the elderly are eager to connect with younger generations. His grandfather, for instance, who was once serious and quiet, had a breakthrough moment during a video shoot. He accidentally made a joke, and when seeing his grandson laughing heartily in response, it sparked a transformation in him. From then on, he began intentionally telling more jokes.
Beyond entertainment, Lin provides practical support for the elderly. He uses earnings from taking on product advertisement projects to purchase daily necessities for them and even organize photo shoots for elderly couples who have never had wedding pictures. Medical assistance is another priority. Seniors often hesitate to seek treatment for minor illnesses and find hospital procedures confusing when they do need care for more serious conditions. Whenever possible, Lin helps them navigate these issues.
However, Lin emphasizes that material aid isn’t enough. “They crave companionship — a visit or a call means a lot,” he says. Lin pointed out that while current policies ensure that even the most disadvantaged have enough food and clothing, elderly people living alone also need emotional support. “These elderly residents are getting older every day, and to be frank, they could leave us at any time,” Lin said. “Let’s cherish every moment we have with them while we still can.”
Through humor and compassion, “Dasenzi” redefines rural aging — not as isolation, but as a stage for inter-generational bonds.
4.Why might Lin’s grandfather start telling more jokes?
A.To gain more attention from his grandson B.To attract more followers on Douyin
C.To present Sichuan people’s joyful spirit D.To bond emotionally with his grandson
5.Which behavior is NOT mentioned as part of Lin’s support for the elderly?
A.Advocating for government policy changes B.Organizing wedding photography sessions
C.Financial assistance through sponsored ads D.Helping cope with healthcare procedures
6.Why does Lin emphasize that material aid isn’t enough for the elderly?
A.Because he thinks material assistance doesn’t matter at all.
B.Because the elderly long for emotional connection and company.
C.Because he lacks sufficient funds to support all their needs.
D.Because government policies have already covered basic living costs.
7.What might be the best title for the text?
A.Winning Fame: The Rise of a Douyin Star
B.Urban Migration: Leaving lonely elderly behind
C.Big grandson: Bridging Generations in Rural China
D.Medical Gaps: Addressing Elderly Care in Sichuan
【答案】4.D 5.A 6.B 7.C
根据第二段“When interacting with the seniors in the village, Lin observed that the elderly are eager to connect with younger generations. His grandfather, for instance, who was once serious and quiet, had a breakthrough moment during a video shoot. He accidentally made a joke, and when seeing his grandson laughing heartily in response, it sparked a transformation in him. From then on, he began intentionally telling more jokes.(在与村里的老人互动时,林智鹏观察到老年人渴望与年轻一代建立联系。例如,他的爷爷曾经严肃而安静,在一次视频拍摄中迎来了一个突破时刻。他不小心开了个玩笑,当看到孙子开心地大笑作为回应时,这在他身上引发了转变。从那时起,他开始有意地讲更多的笑话)”可知,爷爷开始讲更多笑话是因为看到孙子的积极回应,想与孙子在情感上建立更紧密的联系。故选D。
5.细节理解题。根据第三段“He uses earnings from taking on product advertisement projects to purchase daily necessities for them and even organize photo shoots for elderly couples who have never had wedding pictures. Medical assistance is another priority. Seniors often hesitate to seek treatment for minor illnesses and find hospital procedures confusing when they do need care for more serious conditions. A 选项 “Advocating for government policy changes”(倡导政府政策改变),文中未提及。故选A。
根据第四段“However, Lin emphasizes that material aid isn’t enough. “They crave companionship — a visit or a call means a lot,” he says. Lin pointed out that while current policies ensure that even the most disadvantaged have enough food and clothing, elderly people living alone also need emotional support.(然而,林智鹏强调物质援助是不够的。
Four People You Should Surround Yourself with Daily
If you are someone who believes in the philosophy “company matters”, then you must choose the people in your life, very wisely. Often, the people we keep as a company either make us better or ruin our chances of being a better version of ourselves. 8 . Below are some people you should surround yourself with:
The doers
You must have planned lots of things in your head, and you could have even written them down. However, the question is whether you have executed them? In most cases, the answer is no. That is because you lack doers in your life. 9 . Such people are not afraid to risk it all; they are go-getters. So, if you find someone who is a doer, keep them.
The good listeners
It’s very hard to find them, but they certainly exist. Life nowadays is troublesome and we can solve half our problems by just talking it out. But the problem is that people today are so self-engrossed that they hardly want to know what’s happening in others’ lives, and that’s why you need a therapist to hear you out. 10 .
The honest ones
At times, you need people who are brutally honest around you. 11 . These people won’t criticize you, but they will give you a better perspective. It is not okay to have only people who are unwilling, to be honest with you, for reasons such as losing your friendship. You will keep making mistakes.
The cheerleaders
We are referring to all those out there, who cheer the loudest on your achievements. Of course, your family is going to be the happiest or not, but look around you to understand the ones who are genuinely happy for your success. 12 . They send opportunities to your way and applaud the loudest when you make it big.
A.Live life in the presence of nature, take breaks from work and studying, and be happy, be wild, be adventurous
B.Hence, it is important to be very selective of the people you let in your space
C.These sets of people will never push you downhill
D.If they had been there, you would have done what you had always planned to do
E.If you find someone willing to listen to your rants without being judgemental, hold on to them
F.When your friends meet with trouble, you should lend them a hand right away
G.It might sound harsh, but they help you make the right choices in your life
8.上文“Often, the people we keep as a company either make us better or ruin our chances of being a better version of ourselves.(通常,我们交往的人要么会让我们变得更好,要么会毁掉我们成为更好自己的机会)”表明交往的人对我们影响很大。B选项“Hence, it is important to be very selective of the people you let in your space.(因此,谨慎选择进入你生活圈子的人很重要)”承接上文,因为交往的人影响大,所以要谨慎选择,上下文逻辑紧密。故选B项。
9.上文“That is because you lack doers in your life.(那是因为你生活中缺少实干者)”指出缺少实干者导致计划无法执行。D选项“If they had been there, you would have done what you had always planned to do.(如果他们在的话,你就会去做你一直计划要做的事)”与上文呼应,说明有了实干者,计划就能得以实施,选项中的“they”指代上文的“doers”。故选D项。
10.上文“Life nowadays is troublesome and we can solve half our problems by just talking it out. But the problem is that people today are so self-engrossed that they hardly want to know what’s happening in others’ lives, and that’s why you need a therapist to hear you out.(如今生活很麻烦,我们只要把事情说出来就能解决一半的问题。但问题是现在的人都太自我,几乎不想知道别人生活中发生了什么,这就是为什么你需要一个倾听者来听你倾诉)”强调了倾听者的重要性。E选项“If you find someone willing to listen to your rants without being judgemental, hold on to them.(如果你找到一个愿意不带评判地听你发牢骚的人,就留住他们)”与上文衔接,进一步说明要珍惜愿意倾听的人。故选E项。
11.上文“At times, you need people who are brutally honest around you.(有时候,你身边需要那些直言不讳的人)”提出需要直言的人。G选项“It might sound harsh, but they help you make the right choices in your life.(这听起来可能很刺耳,但他们能帮助你在生活中做出正确的选择)”解释了直言者的作用,说明虽然他们的话可能刺耳,但对我们有帮助,与上文逻辑一致。故选G项。
12.上文“We are referring to all those out there, who cheer the loudest on your achievements. Of course, your family is going to be the happiest or not, but look around you to understand the ones who are genuinely happy for your success.(我们指的是那些为你的成就欢呼最响亮的人。当然,你的家人可能会为你感到高兴,但看看你周围那些真正为你的成功感到高兴的人)”介绍了为你成就欢呼的人。C选项“These sets of people will never push you downhill.(这些人永远不会把你推向低谷)”说明这类人的积极影响,与上文对这类人的描述相呼应。故选C项。
