Suzhou’s classical gardens are not just beautiful places, but also living examples of Chinese wisdom. The Humble Administrator’s Garden, built in the Ming Dynasty, is divided into eastern, central and western parts. Each part has a unique design—lakes in the central area, rockeries (假山) in the western part, and open fields in the eastern part. Designers used water, plants and stones to create a balance between man and nature.
The Lingering Garden is famous for its “borrowed scenery” technique. By placing windows and gates carefully, designers made distant hills and trees look like part of the garden. This creates a sense of depth and makes the small garden seem larger.
