Being able to land safely is an important skill for all flying animals. For animals living on the land, they face no special challenge when they need to stop running out for flying animals who move at much higher speeds, they must be careful about how they land. Hitting the ground, or even water, at full flight speed would be quite 15 . Before touching down, they must reduce their 16 in order to land safely.
Both bats and birds have mastered the skill of landing. In the past it was believed that there was 17 difference between bats and birds. This belief was based only on guessing, because for years 18 had actually studied how bats move their wings. In recent years, researchers have 19 a number of interesting facts about bat flight.
Bats are built differently from birds, and their wings include their front and hind limbs (后肢). This makes their limbs work more difficult and they are not very good at flying over longer distances. However, they are much better at 20 . A bat can quickly change its direction of flight or completely change to the opposite, something a bird cannot easily do.
Another interesting fact of bat flight is the 21 in which bats land-upside down! 22 birds, which touch down on the ground or on tree branches, bats can be watched flying around and then suddenly hanging upside down.
How do they do it? A group of researchers 23 used video cameras to film bats landing on nets hung from the ceiling of their lab, and they studied the records. They painted on the bats’ wings to see in detail what happens to the wings in flight and during touchdown. It 24 that the bats flew in a straight line up to the net and then quickly turned over and make themselves upside down.

What do you think of doing chores? Boring, even silly, right? According to a new study, however, housework can be quite helpful to kids.
The scientists made an online study about kids’ chores to collect data (资料) in mid-2020. 207 children aged 5 to 13 took part in it. They came from 15 different countries across Europe, North America, Asia, and Oceania (大洋洲). The results show that girls have a higher participation rate (参与率) in 32 of all 42 chores than boys.
The scientists also studied the children’s executive functioning (执行功能). They found that those kids often doing chores could better pay attention, understand different opinions, and remember things. When they did several things at the same time, they also had excellent performance. Those children were better at managing their behaviors and feelings as well.
So doing chores can improve children’s executive functioning. One worker said, “Chores have to do with better working memory, organizing planning and self-control. Usually, these skills begin to develop in early childhood and continue to develop into late teenage years and early adult years.”
Delays (延迟) in executive functioning development can lead to difficulties in the ability to self-control, plan and solve problems as adults. They may also have an influence on reading performance and math abilities, as well as other school performances in later childhood. Parents may let kids do the chores they should do to help develop their executive functioning abilities.
28.Which kid might take part in the study?
A.15-year-old Amy from the UK B.4-year-old David from Australia.
C.7-year-old Jill from South Africa. D.11-year-old Peter from Singapore.

A.To introduce a new study on kids’ chores.
B.To ask kids to help parents with more chores.
C.To talk about whether doing chores is good for kids.
D.To show the relationship between chores and school work

Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom because she was always caring about others. People always seemed to feel comfortable with her. For years, she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home with her where she taught classes.
On one summer day, Mama told me to get dressed and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to destroy everything? I imagined the cool lake water. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and slammed the door shut. We sat in silence. I was too upset to make conversation.
“Tasha, would you like to know where we are going?” Mama asked calmly.
“No,” I said.
“We are going to volunteer at a children’s shelter today. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you,” she explained.
When we reached the shelter, Mama rang the doorbell. Moments later, we were greeted by a woman. She led us to the front room where all of the children were playing. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred (留下伤痕) with iron (熨斗) marks. I was told it was because she wouldn’t stop crying. Most of the children had noticeable scars on their bodies. Others hid their emotional hurts.
As I took in my surroundings, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. I looked down to see a little girl looking up at me. “Hi! Do you want to play dolls with me?” she asked. I looked over at Mama. She smiled and nodded. I turned back and said, “Sure.” Her tiny hand reached up and held mine, as if to comfort me.
My mom taught me a valuable lesson that summer. I returned to the shelter with her several times. During those visits, some of the children shared their troubled pasts with me and I learnt to be grateful for what I had. Today as I convey these values to my-own child, I think back to that experience. It was a time that I will never forget.

High school students from around the world recently proved that robotics isn’t just about building machines — it’s about solving real - world problems.
The 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition in Shanghai (FRC), held at East China Normal University in March, brought together nearly 1,000 high school students from 43 teams coming from different countries and regions, including China, the United States, and Australia.
This year’s theme, “Reefscape” (拯救珊瑚), challenged students to design robots to rebuild ocean ecosystems. The challenges tested students’ both technical skills and environmental care.
Among the competitors, two Shanghai teams stood out. Team 6941 “Iron - Pulse” from Shanghai Pinghe School won first place, while Team 6940 “Violet Z” from a local high school took third. Both teams will compete in the world championship in Houston, USA.
As the world’s highest - level youth robotics competition, FRC requires strong teamwork, Mei Kai, the 17 - year - old captain of Iron - Pulse, explained. “Everyone has a role to play — whether it’s the driver, coach, technician or programmer — and success comes from working together,” he said.
Song Jinyang, coach of Violet Z, believes that this level of close cooperation among students helps to improve their ability to solve complex problems. “when a robot part fails, students must figure out the problems step by step, this teaches them teamwork,” she added.
The competition also encouraged global friendship. Violet Z once shared their coding tips with teams from other countries. “Real progress isn’t about beating others — it’s learning together,” said Iron - Pulse’s coach Jin Shifei. “If your competitor is missing a part and you happen to have it, would you lend it to them? Of course, the answer is yes — that’s the true success of education,” he added.
Through teamwork and kindness, these young students proved technology can protect our oceans and bring the world closer.
34.What is the theme of the 2025 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC)?
A.Building the fastest robot in the world.
B.Solving land pollution with robots.

35.What does the underlined word “complex” mean in paragraph 6?
A.complicated B.basic C.normal D.simple
36.What can be inferred from Jin Shifei’s words about lending parts to competitors?

B.True educational success lies in teamwork instead of competition.
C.Teams should prioritize their own needs over helping others.
D.Sharing resources is against the competition rules.
37.Which can be the best title of the passage?
A.Shanghai Robotics Rising: Engineering Tomorrow, Today!

Dear friends,
As we all know, our environment is getting worse and worse. It’s time for us to go green. Here are some simple steps to take.
First, whenever possible, we should take public transportation, walk or ride our bikes to school to reduce the amount of carbon emissions from cars. We’d better not drive our cars if not necessary. Second, we should take a short shower and turn off the lights and electronic devices when they are not in use. It is not advisable to leave the water running and the lights always on. Third, we should sort our rubbish and recycle plastic, paper and other materials to reduce pollution. We’d better not mix different wastes.
Small changes in our daily lives can make a big difference to the environment. Let’s work together to create a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful world for ourselves.
Yours,
