Why am I singing such praises of myself? Just to explain that the attainment of self-pride comes from a great deal of self-love, and to attain it, one must first learn to accept oneself as one is. That was where my struggle began. Born and raised in Africa, I had always taken my African origin as burden. My self-dislike was further fueled when my family had to relocate to Norway, where I attended a high school. Compared to all the white girls around me, with their golden hair and delicate lips, I, a black girl, had curly hair and full, red lips. My nose often had a thin sheet of sweat on it, whatever the weather was. I just wanted to bury myself in my shell crying “I’m so different!” What also contributed to my self-dislike was my occasional stuttering (口吃), which had weakened my self-confidence. It always stood between me and any fine opportunity. I’d taken it as an excuse to avoid any public speaking sessions, and unknowingly let it rule over me. Fortunately, as I grew older, there came a turning point. One day a white girl caught my eye on the school bus when she suddenly turned back. To my astonishment, she had a thin sheet of sweat on her nose too, and it was in November! “Wow,” I whispered to myself, “this isn’t a genetic (遗传的) disorder after all. It’s perfectly normal.” Days later, my life took an-other twist (转折). Searching the internet for stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such famous people as Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also stuttered. I was greatly relieved and then an idea suddenly hit me— if I’m smart, I shouldn’t allow my stuttering to stand between me and my success. Another boost to my self-confidence came days later as I was watching the news about Oprah Winfrey, the famous talk-show host and writer— she’s black too! Whenever I think of her story and my former dislike of my color, I’m practically filled with shame. Today, I’ ve grown to accept what I am with pride; it simply gives me feeling of uniqueness. The idea of self-love has taken on a whole new meaning for me: there’s always something fantastic about us, and what we need to do is learn to appreciate it. 28. What affected the author’s adjustment to her school life in Norway? A. Her appearance. B. Social discrimination. C. Her changing emotions. D. The climate in Norway. 29. What did the author’s occasional stuttering bring about according on Paragraph 3? A. Her lack of self-confidence. B. Her loss of interest in school. C. Her unwillingness to greet her classmates. D. Her desire for chances to improve herself. 30. How did the author feel on noticing the similarity between her and the girl on the bus? A. Blessed and proud. B. Confused and afraid. C. Amazed and relieved. D. Shocked and ashamed. 31. What lesson did the author learn from the cases of Newton and Churchill? A. Great minds speak alike. B. Stuttering is no barrier to success. C. Wisdom counts more than hard work. D. Famous people can’t live with their weaknesses. 28. A 29. A 30. C 31. Compared to all the white girls around me, with their golden hair and delicate lips, I, a black girl, had curly hair and full, red lips. My nose often had a thin sheet of sweat on it, whatever the weather was. I just wanted to bury myself in my shell crying “I’m so different!” 故选A项。 根据第三段关键句“What also contributed to my self-dislike was my occasional stuttering (口吃), which had weakened my self-confidence. 故选A项。 根据第四段关键句“One day a white girl caught my eye on the school bus when she suddenly turned back. It’s perfectly normal.” 根据第四段关键句“Searching the internet for stuttering cures, I accidentally learned that such famous people as Isaac Newton and Winston Churchill also stuttered. D As we age, even if we’re healthy, the heart just isn’t as efficient in processing oxygen as it used to be. In most people the first signs show up in their 50s or early 60s. And among people who don’t exercise, the changes can start even sooner. “Think of a rubber band. In the beginning, it is flexible, but put it in a drawer for 20 years and it will become dry and easily broken,” says Dr. Ben Levine, a heart specialist at the University of Texas. That’s what happens to the heart. Fortunately for those in midlife, Levine is finding that even if you haven’t been an enthusiastic exerciser, getting in shape now may help improve your aging heart. Levine and his research team selected volunteers aged between 45 and 64 who did not exercise much but were otherwise healthy. Participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first group participated in a program of nonaerobic (无氧) exercise—balance training and weight training—three times a week. The second group did high-intensity aerobic exercise under the guidance of a trainer for four or more days a week. After two years, the second group saw remarkable improvements in heart health. “We took these 50-year-old hearts and turned the clock back to 30-or 35-year-old hearts,” says Levine. “And the reason they got so much stronger and fitter was that their hearts could now fill a lot better and pump (泵送) a lot more blood during exercise.” But the hearts of those who participated in less intense exercise didn’t change, he says. “The sweet spot in life to start exercising, if you haven’t already, is in late middle age when the heart still has flexibility,” Levine says. “We put healthy 70-year-olds through a yearlong exercise training program, and nothing happened to them at all.” Dr. Nieca Goldberg, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association, says Levine’s findings are a great start. But the study was small and needs to be repeated with far larger groups of people to determine exactly which aspects of an exercise routine make the biggest difference. 32. What does Levine want to explain by mentioning the rubber band? A. The right way of exercising. B. The causes of a heart attack. C. The difficulty of keeping fit. D. The aging process of the heart. 33. In which aspect were the two groups different in terms of research design? A. Diet plan. B. Professional background. C. Exercise type. D. Previous physical condition. 34. What does Levine’s research find? A. Middle-aged hearts get younger with aerobic exercise. B. High-intensity exercise is more suitable for the young. C. It is never too late for people to start taking exercise. D. The more exercise we do, the stronger our hearts get. 35 What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest? A. Making use of the findings. B. Interviewing the study participants. C. Conducting further research. D. Clarifying the purpose of the study. 32. D 33. C 34. A 35. Without music, I was shy, very quiet and the type of person that would only talk when asked to. As a little kid, I would hear my parents sing me to sleep and I loved to sing when I grew up. Music allowed me to express myself. It made me happy. There was nothing that could keep me away from my passion, until high school. Every ninth grader who wanted to be in the show choir (歌舞合唱团) (dancing and singing) during high school could audition (试镜) for the program. On the day the audition was held, I waited with the other students. We were called in one by one. It was my turn to enter the room. I walked in. I was a little nervous, and my throat was dry. The room was small with a piano in the middle of it. The singing audition went like this, introduction, a song of our choice and matching a note (调) the director played on the piano. Before I knew it, the audition was over. I hit every note in the song. I took a breath of relief. A week later, there was a dance audition for the show choir. I felt that I had done an amazing job, changing my facial expressions to match the turns. Weeks passed and the list of who had made it into the show choir was posted. “Have you seen the list? I got in!” one of my friends said. “No,” I replied looking at the web page for the results. I moved the page down and found my name. “Angelica H. — alternate (替补)” An alternate? Was my audition that bad? My movements were graceful. Maybe it was the singing. Did I not hit the right notes? I thought to myself. After I saw this, my confidence disappeared. I had no intention of joining the show choir. I was torn from something that I thought made me different from others. A year passed, I realized that it was not smart of me to give up on what I loved. I was at a restaurant with my family, which had a karaoke machine. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I realized not getting into the program did not mean that I had to give up all hope ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I was at a restaurant with my family, which had a karaoke machine. My parents encouraged me to go up and sing. I rejected their proposal. At their repeated request, I got enough courage to go up finally. It took me back to the moment when I was auditioning for the show choir in the ninth grade. I chose a song and began to sweat. I started off my song and gained more confidence as I continued. While I hit the high notes the people eating there cheered for me. I determined to sing from that day on. I realized not getting into the program did not mean that I had to give up all hope. I still loved to sing. I still had that passion. The lesson I learned was if you are turned down or do not get the result you want, and it is something you’re in love with, don’t give up. I never did try out for any show choirs again but I knew I had taken back my passion. For the future I know that I won’t always get the result I want but I will continue to work just as hard. 词汇激活 行为类 ①鼓励:encourage /motivate ②拒绝:reject/refuse ③选择:choose /select ④决定:determine/decide 情绪类 ①热情:passion/enthusiasm 【点睛】[高分句型1] It took me back to the moment when I was auditioning for the show choir in the ninth grade. It started as a pain in his shoulder and the tumour spread to his lungs, making it stage four. The Oxford graduate was teaching English in Siberia when he suffered a shoulder pain and saw the school nurse. It was her reaction to a lump on his back that sent him back home to Bristol. “I was 24 years old. I had done an ultramarathon,” Luke says. “48 hours later. I was back in hospital in the UK.” On 19 June, 2018, doctors told Luke that he had cancer. “I had kind of worked out that it was cancer, but what kind of blew me away was the fact that it was stage four cancer,” says Luke. “That day, my life felt like it had disintegrated. My life had been comfortable and conventional. I had worked hard and got rewards in terms of education, jobs, things like that. That was all taken away.” On the day of his diagnosis, Luke had one clear thought in his mind that he wanted to cycle around the world. It was something he had always hoped to do, but the cancer news made him realize that he couldn’t put it off. “I realized that the future had to become now,” Luke explains. C I’m an 18-year-old pre-medical student, tall and good-looking; with two short story books and quite a number of essays to my credit. 35. What does Dr. Nieca Goldberg suggest? A. Making use of the findings. B. Interviewing the study participants. C. Conducting further research. D. Clarifying the purpose of the study. Knowing how to deal with depression can help you live a fuller and more productive life. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I realized not getting into the program did not mean that I had to give up all hope. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
