Wang Sibo, the first person in Chinese light painting art, is good at creating light paintings in a Chinese style. Using light as ink and night as canvas (画布), he adds ancient cultural elements into modern art to create amazing works.
For creators of light paintings, it does not require highly advanced painting skills. However, it is easier said than done. Wang Sibo once stated, “Light painting requires a strong sense of space and memory, as each stroke (笔画) of the brush is moving very fast and does not leave any mark. Therefore, one can only rely on their feelings and memories to paint in the air.”
Since Wang Sibo began his journey in light painting, he has continuously improved his skills. He has a special fondness for Chinese dragons. To perfectly present the form and charm of dragons, Wang Sibo and his team devoted countless hours and efforts. After two years of hard work, they finally presented a surprising masterpiece.
On a night in 2018, Wang Sibo and his team made history near Wangfujing Street, creating “Dragon Dance in China” — a 670-square-meter light painting that set the Guinness World Record for the “largest light painting pattern”. However, this was just the beginning. In 2021, they once again broke the world record for the largest light painting with “The Elegy of Light,” a 2021-square-meter masterpiece. Not stopping there, Wang Sibo made a new breakthrough in 2023 with “Awakening Lion,” completed by 328 people, earning the first-ever record for “the most people meanwhile creating a light painting.” In this way, Wang Sibo, with his Chinese-style light painting, has stood at the top of the world many times.
For Wang Sibo, light painting is not only an art form, but also a means of expressing his inner self and releasing his emotions. He will continue to use light as a tool to illuminate (照亮) the path of traditional culture and convey its value and significance to the audience.
4. What is unique about Wang Sibo’s light painting?
A. He only paints during the daytime. B. He needs special brushes and paints.
C. He uses digital technology to create art. D. He combines traditional Chinese culture with modern art.
5. What can be inferred from Wang Sibo’s words?
A. Light painting is quite challenging.
B. Canvases of light paintings are in the air.
C. Light painting can only be done by masters of painting.
D. Creators of light painting should have strong emotions.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The significance of Wang Sibo’s light paintings.
B. The unique charm of Wang Sibo’s light paintings.
C. Wang Sibo’s remarkable achievements in light painting.
D. The efforts Wang Sibo has made to set the Guinness World Record.
7. In which column of a magazine is this text most likely to appear?
A. Pioneer. B. Fashion. C. Culture. D. Lifestyle.

Turn on a light outside at night, and it won’t be long before lots of insects start gathering around it. This behavior has led to a popular comparison for attraction, “like a moth to a flame.” However, according to a new study, it turns out that insects aren’t “attracted” to artificial lights, but rather confused by it.
The new finding is based on a theory about insect orientation (定位). Due to their small and lightweight bodies, insects experience less air resistance, allowing them to achieve higher accelerations (加速度), which in turn makes it challenging for them to sense up and down during flight. So, they typically rely on stable light sources like the moon and stars to orient themselves at night, keeping the sky at their backs to stay upright.
However, the introduction of artificial lights confuses their natural sense of direction. The insects you see circling street lights, in other words, are probably lost. To reach these conclusions, scientists used high-resolution cameras to film insects flying around artificial lights in Costa Rica. They also attached tiny sensors to insects and filmed motion-capture videos of them in flight.
In this way researchers can slow down the insects’ pace and study their movements in greater detail. The videos showed insects turning their backs toward sources of artificial light—even at the price of flipping over or crashing. This can be dangerous for insects, as circling around artificial lights can put them at risk from enemies, exhaustion, and starvation, causing many to die before morning.
Night artificial light is a major cause of insect population loss, which could severely impact crop pollination and food supplies for larger animals, including humans. “Insects have been flying around for 370 million years, and it’s just in the last 150 years that it’s really gone wrong for them,” says entomologist Samuel Fabian. “If we don’t want to influence large amounts of insect populations, we should not have lights shining up into the sky.”
8. Why do insects circle street lights according to scientists?
A. They are attracted by street lights.
B. They can sense up and down more easily.
C. They experience less air resistance around street lights.
D. They can’t find their way due to the disturbance of street lights.
9. How did the scientists conduct the experiment?
A. By detecting the living environment of insects.
B. By making videos to study insects’ movements.
C. By monitoring the insects’ brain activity during flight.
D. By building models to analyze insects’ motion patterns.
10. Why does the author mention Fabian’s words in the last paragraph?
A. To stress the long history of insect flight.
B. To appeal to people to reduce light pollution.
C. To show the importance of insects to food supplies.
D. To remind people of the influence human activities have on insects.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. How Artificial Lights Impact the Ecosystem B. What Leads to the Loss of Insect Populations
C. How Insects Locate Themselves in the Flight D. What’s the Truth Behind Moths Flying to Flames
D 9. B 10. B 11. D
根据文章第三段“However, the introduction of artificial lights confuses their natural sense of direction. The insects you see circling street lights, in other words, are probably lost(然而,人造光的引入扰乱了它们天生的方向感。换句话说,你看到的绕着路灯盘旋的昆虫可能是迷路了)”可知,人造光扰乱了昆虫的自然方向感,它们绕着路灯盘旋是因为迷失了方向,即由于路灯的干扰而找不到路。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“To reach these conclusions, scientists used high - resolution cameras to film insects flying around artificial lights in Costa Rica. They also attached tiny sensors to insects and filmed motion - capture videos of them in flight(为了得出这些结论,科学家们使用高分辨率相机拍摄了哥斯达黎加昆虫在人造光周围飞行的画面。
根据最后一段“Insects have been flying around for 370 million years, and it’s just in the last 150 years that it’s really gone wrong for them(昆虫已经飞行了3.7亿年,而就在过去的150年里,它们的情况真的变糟了)”以及“If we don’t want to influence large amounts of insect populations, we should not have lights shining up into the sky(如果我们不想影响大量的昆虫种群,我们就不应该让灯光照向天空)”可知,在过去的150年里,昆虫的飞行情况变糟了,如果我们不想影响大量的昆虫种群,我们就不应该让灯光照向天空,可推理出作者引用Fabian的话是为了呼吁人们减少光污染。
根据第一段“However, according to a new study, it turns out that insects aren’t “attracted” to artificial lights, but rather confused by it.(然而,根据一项新研究,事实证明昆虫并不是被人造光“吸引”,而是被其迷惑了)”、第三段“However, the introduction of artificial lights confuses their natural sense of direction. The insects you see circling street lights, in other words, are probably lost(然而,人造光的引入扰乱了它们天生的方向感。换句话说,你看到的绕着路灯盘旋的昆虫可能是迷路了)”、最后一段“Insects have been flying around for 370 million years, and it’s just in the last 150 years that it’s really gone wrong for them(昆虫已经飞行了3.7亿年,而就在过去的150年里,它们的情况真的变糟了)”以及“If we don’t want to influence large amounts of insect populations, we should not have lights shining up into the sky(如果我们不想影响大量的昆虫种群,我们就不应该让灯光照向天空)”可知,文章开头提到人们常说“像飞蛾扑火一样”,但新研究表明昆虫并非被人造光吸引,而是被迷惑,接着具体解释了原因,所以文章主要探讨的是飞蛾扑火背后的真相。D项“What’s the Truth Behind Moths Flying to Flames(飞蛾扑火背后的真相是什么)”可以作为最佳标题,故选D项。
D
Think of a typical college physics course: notetaking, homework struggles and studying for difficult exams. Now imagine access to a tutor (导师) who answers questions at any hour, never tires and never judges. Might you learn more? Maybe even twice as much? That’s the unexpected conclusion from a Harvard study examining learning outcomes for students in a large physics course who worked with a custom-designed AI chatbot.
The study was led by lecturer Gregory Kestin and Kelly Miller, who analyzed learning outcomes of 194 students in Kestin’s Physical Sciences 2 course. The students were divided into two groups, each of whom experienced two lessons in continual weeks. During the first week, Group 1 participated in an instructor-guided active learning classroom lesson, while Group 2 engaged with an AI-supported lesson at home; conditions were changed oppositely the following week.
“We went into the study curious about whether our AI tutor could be as effective as in-person instructors,” Kestin said. “I certainly didn’t expect students to find the AI-powered lesson more engaging. But that’s exactly what happened: Not only did the AI tutor seem to help students learn more materials, the students also self-reported more engagement when working with AI.”
The researchers found that learning gains for students in the AI-tutored group were about double those for students in the in-class group. The researchers believe students’ ability to get personalized feedback (反馈) and self pace with the AI tutor are advantages compared with in-class learning. “In various in-class settings, students with a strong background in the material may be less engaged, and they’re sometimes bored,” Miller said. “Students without the background sometimes struggle to keep up. So the fact that the AI tutor can be supportive of that difference is probably the biggest thing.”
Though excited by AI’s potential to revolutionize education, Kestin showed his concern. “While AI has the potential to supercharge learning, it could also undermine learning if we’re not careful,” Kestin said. “AI tutors shouldn’t ‘think’ for students, but rather help them build critical thinking skills. AI tutors shouldn’t replace in-person instruction, but help all students better prepare for it.”
12. What were the participants required to do in the study?
A. Report their partners’ feelings. B. Study with different tutors in turn.
C. Make a choice between two courses. D. Experience in-class learning for 2 weeks.
13. What did Kestin most probably think of their findings?
A. Valueless. B. Doubtful. C. Surprising. D. Confusing.
14. What might probably lead to students’ less engagement in class according to the text?
A. Inexperienced in-class instructors. B. Feeling bored with AI’s questions.
C. Knowing the materials well in advance. D. Non-personalized feedback from the instructors.
15. What does the underlined word “supercharge” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Control. B. Adapt. C. Analyze. D. Boost.
B 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据上文“The less you spend, the more you save. It sounds simple in theory, but in practice, it’s much more complicated. Spending is built into our daily habits, which sometimes can get us addicted to buying stuff.(你花的越少,存的就越多。理论上听起来很简单,但实际上要复杂得多。花钱是我们的日常习惯,有时会让我们沉迷于购买东西)”以及下文“It’s kind of like a crash diet, but in a good way!(这有点像速成节食,不过是一种好的方式!)”
根据上文“Despite the name, a no-spend challenge doesn’t mean you sit on your hands and spend no money at all. (尽管名字叫“零消费挑战”,但这并不意味着你要完全不动手,一分都不花。)”以及下文“The basic premise (前提) of a no-spend challenge is to cut out non-essential spending for a certain amount of time. It could be for a week, a month or even an entire year.(无消费挑战的基本原则是在一定时间内削减非必要的开支。这个时间可以是一周、一个月,甚至是一整年。)”可知,上文否定“完全不花钱”的误解,下文强调“削减非必要支出”。F选项“After all, there are some necessities you simply can’t do without.(毕竟,有些必需品是你根本离不开的。)”
根据上文“If you need to purchase something during your no-spend challenge, it should be something that’s necessary and you absolutely can’t do without. So groceries, yes. Candy bar in the checkout line, no. Also, no new iPhone, even if you’ve been dreaming about an upgrade. No new shoes, even if they’re on a huge sale. (如果你在进行无消费挑战期间需要购买某样东西,那应该是必不可少的东西,是你绝对不能没有的。所以,购买食品杂货是可以的,但在收银台附近冲动购买的糖果棒就不行。此外,即使你一直梦想着升级,也不能买新的苹果手机。即使鞋子在大减价,也不能买新鞋子。)”以及下文“ Decide acceptable purchases. The goal of this challenge isn’t to make life harder on yourself by cutting out spending on essential expenses.(确定可接受的购买行为。这个挑战的目标并非通过削减必要开支来让自己的生活变得更艰难。)”可知,上文举例说明 “可买” 与 “不可买” 的物品,下文提到 “确定可接受的购买”。G选项“This is not the time to make excuses to buy stuff you don’t really need.(这不是为购买你并不真正需要的东西找借口的时候。)”
根据下文“You can use the extra money you normally would have spent to build up your emergency fund. Or you might want to put the money toward other financial goals, like saving for a new car or an upcoming vacation.(你可以用平时会花的额外的钱来建立应急基金。或者,你可能想把这笔钱用于其他财务目标,比如存钱买一辆新车或为即将到来的度假做准备。)”可知,下文提到用节省的钱建立应急基金或实现财务目标。E 选项“A no-spend challenge can be a boost to your financial situation.(不花钱的挑战可以促进你的财务状况。)”
根据上文“While no-spend challenges are designed to be temporary, you can always extend your challenge.( 虽然不花钱的挑战是暂时的,但你可以扩展挑战)”可知,上文说明了不花钱挑战的好处,本句为本段最后一句,推测是建议采取这种生活方式,来进行省钱。故B选项“Why not treat it as more of a lifestyle change? (为什么不把它看作是生活方式的改变呢?)”符合语境,故选B。

The preparation has been both challenging and enlightening. I’ve been researching both ancient artisans and modern innovators. 47.
Sandro was born and grew up in Milan. Until he was 13 years old, he never wanted to leave his hometown. But last year, Sandro’s father’s investment went bad, wiping out the family and sending his parents to prison. As a teenager under 16 years old, Sandro was forced to go to Newcastle in the northeast of England to stay with his uncle Lawrence.
Sandro had a lot of difficulties in the new environment. He didn’t like the food in England. Nobody could forecast the weather in Newcastle. He had to start learning the second foreign language in his new school. Pocket money was not enough as usual. Almost every subject was a challenge for him. Most importantly, he had no friends. It seemed nobody knew him and he knew nobody in the school.
On an early summer evening, when Sandro was going home alone from school as usual, a man called him from behind. Sandro turned around and saw Eddie, his PE teacher, standing in front of him.
“You know, the school will have a swimming competition next month. There will be all kinds of races. Will you participate?” Eddie asked.
Sandro took a look at Eddie with doubt and answered, “You sure? Me? No. I won’t. I can swim, but I’m slower than a snail.”
Eddie smiled and then said, “Yes. Indeed. You are, in breaststroke(蛙泳), in backstroke, and in butterfly, but not in freestyle. So join the freestyle race! 200-meter freestyle is the game suitable for you.”
Sandro was speechless at that moment. He had never known someone in the school was observing him and caring for him.
“I don’t think I can win anything,” Sandro was still a little puzzled.
“But you may get more recognition and consequently you can make some friends. That is more important than prizes,” Eddie responded immediately.
Having hesitated for a while, Sandro agreed to have a try.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 左右;
Every afternoon for the next month, Sandro trained really hard.

Sandro dived into the pool confidently like other competitors.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Every afternoon for the next month, Sandro trained really hard. Starting position, starting dive, turning, pushing off, touching the timing pad, all details, he practiced them over and over. Whenever he was exhausted, Eddie’s words echoed in his mind and supplied extra energy to him. “Maybe I can’t be the champion of the game, but I can be the champion for myself.” He spoke in a low mumble to himself after he finished the last training. Finally, the day of competition arrived. With the sound of the starting gun piercing through the air, the race began as expected.
Sandro dived into the pool confidently like other competitors. He swam as freely as a fish. 150 meters covered, he was left behind by 2 competitors. In the last 50 meters, Sandro swam magnificently, with his arms pushing forward fast, his legs hitting the water hard. Finally, the championship was still out of his reach. When the result was announced that Sandro won third place, however, other players congratulated him, the audience in the stadium bursting into thunderous applause. As teacher Eddie said, he won the recognition and respect from others with his effort.

On a night in 2018 Wang Sibo and his team made history near Wangfujing Street, creating “Dragon Dance in China” — a 670-square-meter light painting that set the Guinness World Record for the “largest light painting pattern”.

Due to their small and lightweight bodies insects experience less air resistance, allowing them to achieve higher accelerations (加速度), which in turn makes it challenging for them to sense up and down during flight.
In this way, researchers can slow down the insects’ pace and study their movements in greater detail.

A. Control. B. Adapt. C. Analyze. D. Boost.

“You know the school will have a swimming competition next month.
