At 104 years old, Dorothy Hoffner fell. Then she kept falling, and falling. When the lifelong Chicagoan finally touched the ground last Sunday, she landed in the history books and became the oldest person to ever sky-dive (跳伞).
As Hoffner prepared to board, she pushed her red walker out and walked slowly to the plane, where two expert instructors helped her up the steps into the hold. “Let’s go!” she said, finally seated. The plane quickly rose, Hoffner looking calm and confident all the while.
When the aft (机尾) door opened to show the crop fields far below, she and the instructor were ready to stand up. When Hoffner first sky-dived at 100 years old, she was pushed out, she said. This time, she wanted to lead the jump.
Seven minutes after her jump, she moved slowly in the air for her historic landing. The wind pushed back her white hair. A look of excitement and wonder spread across her face. She picked up her legs as the ground approached. And finally, she managed to land on the ground.
The crowd gathered along the landing area. Friends rushed to share the moment. Someone brought over Hoffner’s red walker. She rose fast, and a reporter asked how it felt to be back on the ground. “The whole thing was wonderful, and couldn’t have been better,” she said.
The Guinness World Record for oldest skydiver was set in May 2022 by 103-year-oldLinnéa Ingegard Larsson from Sweden. When asked how it felt like to break the record, Hoffner replied quickly, “Like I’m old.” But the record didn’t seem to interest Hoffner before the jump. The other day, I decided to teach my son about the power of small acts of kindness. He had won some lollies in a prize machine in the local supermarket, so I asked him if he would like to share his prizes with another child. He hesitated (犹豫) for a while because he is a shy little boy, but said yes after I encouraged him a bit.
A father and his child passed by us. I went to the father and asked if my son could give his daughter some candies that he had won. The father looked at me in a strange way and was unsure what to say. I explained that I was teaching my son about the power of kindness. At last, he said it was okay.
We went to his daughter, but to my surprise, the little girl wouldn’t accept the candies! My son was rather embarrassed by the fact that she wouldn’t accept his candies, and then he said to me, “We go to the same school, Mum.” And I suddenly remembered I had seen the little girl before in my son’s school.
When we left the supermarket, I explained to my son that people in the world today are not so open to kindness because their thoughts and opinions have been shaped by the past, and I told him not to be embarrassed. “They may have been unfriendly, but I’m sure we left them moved in some way. And the young girl will remember you as the boy with a kind heart when she meets you at school!” I said and he nodded.
8. When the mother asked the boy to share his candies with others, the boy ________.
A. didn’t want to do that at first
B. was sure that the little girl wouldn’t take them
C. went to the little girl happily
D. wanted to keep all the candies
9. What did the boy feel when the little girl refused his candies?
A. Angry. B. Disappointed. C. Surprised. D. Embarrassed.
10. After reading the passage, we learn that ________.
A. the little girl is very shy
B. the little girl’s father is very rude
C. the little boy and the little girl are schoolmates
D. the little girl felt sad because she didn’t win any candies
11. By saying the words in the last paragraph, the writer mainly wants to ________.
A. tell us that it’s not good to live in the past
B. make her son understand that his kindness will be remembered
C. tell her son not to be afraid to meet the little girl again
D. tell us that people are not friendly today
D
In some countries like the UK, cars drive on the left side. The steering wheels (方向盘) of cars are on the right, and the doors of buses for passengers to get on and off are all set on the left. However, in other countries like the US, it is the other way around. How it got that way is not a simple story.
The Conestoga wagon (运货马车) of Pennsylvania was key to this whole story. These wagons carried the things of the first group of people who went from the east out to the frontier (边远地区), western Pennsylvania. Besides sitting in the wagons and driving, people often needed to get out of their wagons to check the controls of their horses and wagons. Most people are right- handed. So, Conestoga wagons had the controls on the left side, close to the wagon driver’s right hand.
Finally, between Lancaster and Pennsylvania, America’s first major highway was created in 1795 and all traffic was required to stay to the right — just like the Conestoga wagons did. And in 1804, New York became the first state to dictate traffic of staying to the right on all roads. In 1908, a famous American car company in the US put the steering wheel on the left side of the car. Really, though, the company was just considering driving habits that had been developed.
The strange thing is that most of Europeans drive on the right. Why do the British go the other way? The reason lied in the French. The French government at that time required their colonies (殖民地) in Europe should drive on the right.
It also had to do with the different types of vehicles (车辆) the British used. There were fewer large- sized wagons in Britain. The British horse riders preferred to stay to the left to keep their right hands toward oncoming traffic for greetings and, if needed, fighting.
12. Why did the Conestoga wagons drive on the right side?
A. It was decided by people’s habit.
B. It was required by the local law.
C. It was thought to speed up quickly.
D. It was caused by the long distance.
13. What does the underlined word “dictate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Fear. B. Order. C. Study. D. Stop.
14. What do we know from paragraph 4?
A. European countries have the same driving habit.
B. An American car company started the right- side driving.
C. The French made right- side driving widespread in Europe.
D. Britain is the only country to drive on the left in Europe.
15 Why did the British develop the habit of driving on the left?
A. Their different vehicles were safer to drive on the left.
B. They went against the French rule of driving on the right.
C. Their smaller vehicles were suitable for driving on the left.
D. They needed to keep their right hand free to do something.

At last he said it was okay.

15. Why did the British develop the habit of driving on the left?
A. Their different vehicles were safer to drive on the left.
B. They went against the French rule of driving on the right.
C. Their smaller vehicles were suitable for driving on the left.
D. They needed to keep their right hand free to do something.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D

此处为固定短语 “take control of sth.”,意为“控制;接管某物”,所以此处使用介词of。故填of。
54. It was yesterday afternoon ________ I saw Jacob in the street. (用适当的词填空)
【答案】that
【解析】
【详解】考查强调句型。句意:我是昨天下午在街上看到雅各布的。分析句子可知,这是一个强调句。强调句的基本结构是:It is/was +被强调部分+ that +其他部分。在这个句子中,被强调部分是“yesterday afternoon”,去掉“It was”和“that”之后,句子仍然是一个完整的句子:I saw Jacob in the street yesterday afternoon.;强调句的作用就是突出强调句子中的某个成分,这里突出强调了时间状语“yesterday afternoon”。所以此处应填“that”。故填that。
55. The police officer spoke of his ____ (determine) to catch the killers.
