Several years ago I was driving to my daughter’s college to bring her home for the summer break. It was a long trip so I stopped at a little gas station halfway to refuel. I pulled up behind an old car. It was at least 20 years old. The metal was rusting (生锈), and the tires were balding (变秃). A young teenage girl sat in the front passenger seat and two much younger girls were in the back.
After filling my gas tank I walked in to pay. The mother of the girls was at the counter desperately digging through her purse. She had bought some small snacks for her children but still needed five more dollars to pay for them. She sighed and started to pick up the snacks to put them back. “I got them,” I said and put the money on the counter.
The mum turned and looked at me with wet eyes. Then suddenly she stepped forward and hugged me. I felt a burst of warmth in my heart that surely traveled to my cheeks as well. The mum let me go and said, “Thank you.” She smiled, grabbed the snacks and hurried out to her children. I stood there watching them leave and said a prayer for them. Then I walked out into the sunshine feeling lighter than the air around me.
4. How many girls were in the old car?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
5. Why did the mother need to put back the snacks?
A. Because her car couldn’t hold them.
B. Because her children didn’t like them.
C. Because there were too many snacks for them.
D. Because she didn’t have enough money to buy them.
6. What can we learn about the author?

C. She knew the mother well. D. She didn’t hear from her daughter.
7. Why did the mother hug the author?

C. Because she was moved by the author. D. Because she wanted to demand more.

The words “protect animals” appear everywhere in books and on screens because some animals are in danger of dying out. But sometimes the reality can be a little different from what people read or watch.
About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015. It’s been the first bear hunt since 1994.
Animal protection groups protested this decision. But local officials explained that the black bear population had grown to 3,500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.
This brings an old question back into the spotlight — which is more important, protecting animals or protecting people’s interests?
This question is asked in other countries too. In Switzerland, a wolf was sentenced to death by the Swiss government months ago. This is because the wolf killed 38 sheep and local people lost a lot of money. Days ago in China, three old men were arrested for killing a serow (鬣羚), a protected species. But they insisted they didn’t know about this and killed the animal because it ruined their crops.
However, these stories don’t always mean that animal protection stops due to human interests, especially involving economic development. A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and 300 bears. But his base also offered jobs to local people.
“There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give more attention to the environment or human development,” said Robert May, a British biologist at Oxford University. “But we shouldn’t push either one to the side, as the future is hanging in the balance.”
8. In October 2015, Florida held its first bear hunt after about________.
A. five years B. ten years
C. fourteen years D. twenty-one years
9. What does the underlined word “menace” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Danger. B. Chance. C. Relief. D. Treasure.
10. What does the author intend to tell us by mentioning Zhou Weisen’s story?
A. Protecting animals needs hard work.
B. Zhou was good at feeding wild animals.
C. Zhou had a good relationship with local people.
D. Protecting animals can bring economic development.
11. Which of the following statements might Robert May agree with?
A. Human development should be considered first.
B. We should pay more attention to animal protection.
C. We should consider both the environment and human interests.
D. It’s difficult to find proper ways to solve environmental problems.
【答案】8. D 9. A 10. D 11. C
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇新闻报道。文章讲述了,保护动物和人们的经济利益是息息相关的,有时矛盾有时一致,但不管怎么样,我们都要处理好这些关系。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。由第二段“About 300 black bears were killed in Florida, the US, in October, 2015. It’s been the first bear hunt since 1994.”(2015年10月,大约300头黑熊在美国佛罗里达州被杀。这是自1994年以来的第一次猎熊。),可知自1994年以来,已经过了21年,才有2015年10月的第一次猎熊活动。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词义猜测题。由第三段中的“But local officials explained that the black bear population had grown to 3,500 and become a menace to local people. In the past two years, bears have hurt at least four people in Florida.”(但当地官员解释说,黑熊的数量已经增长到3500头,成为当地人的menace。在过去的两年里,熊在佛罗里达州已经伤害了至少四个人。),可知在过去的两年里,熊在佛罗里达州已经伤害了至少四个人,说明熊对当地人是一个威胁,menace在此处意为“Danger(威胁)”。故选A项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。由倒数第二段中的“A man named Zhou Weisen set up a wild animal base in Guilin, Guangxi. He saved over 170 tigers and 300 bears. But his base also offered jobs to local people.”(一个叫周伟森的人在广西桂林建立了一个野生动物基地。
由最后一段““There may never be a standard answer to the question of whether we should give more attention to the environment or human development,” said Robert May, a British biologist at Oxford University. “But we shouldn’t push either one to the side, as the future is hanging in the balance.””(牛津大学的英国生物学家Robert may说:“对于我们应该更多关注环境还是人类发展的问题,可能永远不会有一个标准答案。但我们不应该把任何一方推到一边,因为未来是悬而未决的。”),可知英国生物学家Robert may认为不应该把保护环境和人类发展对立起来,未来前途未卜,可得出为了未来的发展,正确的做法是人类应该同时考虑环境和人类的利益。故选C项。
D
Have you ever thought about why malls, restaurants, and even theaters have music? Well, to understand this, you simply just look back at how you felt when you heard music in these places. Music is known to improve the mood of people. Often music helps us pay attention to what we are doing. Music helps patients feel good and better.
Depression (沮丧) is a state of mind that most of us experience at some point of time. There are some periods in our life when everything seems difficult. It seems that everything is getting worse and we have no control over our life. Studies have shown that music can be an important mood lifter in such situations. Music also plays a great role in making us feel less nervous or worried. Anxiety can often cause loss of sleep and other illnesses.
Music is often known as an international language. We may not know the language another person is speaking, but most of us respond to music in the same. Music can often be the best way to connect with someone.
Music is one of the best ways to improve your moods, but this can depend largely on the kind of music you listen to. While happy music can certainly make you feel better, sad music can further lower your spirits. Listening to classical music can often make you feel a lot more powerful, while soft music can be the perfect way to relax at the end of a long day. If you want to use music to change the way how you are feeling, you need to understand the role of it, learn to recognize the kind of music that lifts your mood and helps you feel better. Once you realize the kind of music you can use, you can use it to change the way you feel. The right kind of music can be the perfect way to help us feel happier.

14. What is this passage mainly about?

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mom was a kind woman. She had an unusual view on helping others that I didn’t really understand until one cold, winter day when we picked up my brothers at school.
“Who is that child?” Mom pointed at a skinny, angry-looking girl across the street. “She doesn’t even have a coat. It’s freezing!” “That’s Becky Ingler. She always looks mad like that,” I replied. Becky didn’t have a father, and everybody laughed at her. “I’ll visit her tomorrow,” Mom said.
The next day, we went to the Inglers’ house. A tired-looking woman appeared, and Mom smiled, “Hello, Mrs. Ingler. I’m just visiting some of our neighbors.” Once inside, I noticed there was a rusty coal stove and a big messy bed. Mom looked at each of the children carefully.
As we left, Mom told Mrs. Ingler she would visit them again soon.
Mom’s old sewing machine (缝纫机) worked for two days and nights to turn some shabby clothes into stylish winter coats. She said to me, “I need your help to send these coats to the Inglers this afternoon.”
“Wow!” I said. “They’re lucky to get these.”
“No,” said Mom as she faced me. “We’re the lucky ones to be able to help them. We must make sure these coats are given freely, without the Inglers paying a price for them.” I didn’t understand what Mom meant. Mom explained, “I don’t want these coats to cost them their pride or dignity (尊严). We can’t show we are somehow better than they are.”
I asked Mom what we should do if they refused the coats. Mom smiled and said, “I have a plan in mind.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Later that day, we want to the Inglers’ house again. “I know this might be an improper request, but I hope you won’t mind,” Mom smiled at Mrs. Ingler. “We have some winter coats here, and I just wondered if you might help deal with them. It seems a shame to donate them.” Mom lifted a beautiful coat out of the bag. Mrs. Ingler looked at the coat, and then glanced at Becky. “I’d be happy to help.” Mrs. Ingler gave my mother a knowing look. “Thank you.” “You’re doing us a favor,” Mom smiled.
As we left, I noticed Becky examining the coats happily. She lifted her head and smiled al Mom and me. She looked so happy and satisfied. It seemed that she became a Becky I hadn’t seen before. And we smiled back. Over the years, I thought about how Mom accomplished that act of kindness, and about her gift for caring about others. What Mom did was truly an act of kindness. I will follow in Mom’s footsteps and care for others truly.

B Because her children didn’t like them.
C. Because there were too many snacks for them.
D. Because she didn’t have enough money to buy them.
6. What can we learn about the author?
A. She was a kind woman. B. She was very rich.
C. She knew the mother well. D. She didn’t hear from her daughter.
7. Why did the mother hug the author?
A. Because she loved the author. B. Because she didn’t stand steadily.

12. According to the passage, what’s the purpose of playing music in restaurants?
A. To welcome the customers
B. To make customers feel good
C. To make customers dance
D. To make customers feel depressed
13. From the passage, we can know that ________ .
A. most of us suffer depression all the time
B. most of us respond to music in different ways
C. music can be a good way to connect with others
D. any kind of music will help us improve our moods
14. What is this passage mainly about?
A. What meanings music has
B. How we control our moods
C. How music affects our moods
D. What kind of music we listen to
15. According to the last paragraph, which of music can relax ourselves from a long day’s work?
A. Soft music.
B. Classical.music.
C. Sad music.
D. Rock music.
