The police have many ways of catching criminals. One way of catching them is by fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is the study of the patterns on our fingertips. We have known that no two fingerprints are exactly the same for hundreds of years. However it wasn’t until 1910 that the first criminal in the USA was convicted (被判有罪) using fingerprint evidence.
Early on the morning of September 19,1910, Hiller’s wife noticed that the light which they usually left on was off. When Hiller went to find out what was happening, he saw a stranger at the top of the stairs. The stranger had broken in and wanted to steal. Hiller and the stranger started to fight, but the stranger had a gun. He shot Hiller twice and ran away.
Hiller’s wife ran to Hiller when she heard the gunshots but found him dead. So she called the police. Soon after, the police caught Thomas Jennings, not far from the Hillers’ house.
The only problem was no one saw the criminal. However, the police had started using fingerprinting at that time. According to Hiller’s wife, only several hours before Hiller’s death, he had painted some wood near the kitchen window. Then the police checked the wood completely and found some fingerprints in the wet paint.
During the trial (审判), the police proved that the fingerprints belonged to Jennings, and he was convicted of Hiller’s murder (谋杀). Since then, fingerprinting has helped in the conviction of hundreds of thousands of criminals.

Slides (滑梯) are simple but always fun. All you need to do is to climb up to the top and slide down. But did you know that there is science behind this simple playground equipment?
Isaac Newton (艾萨克·牛顿) said what goes up must come down. He was talking about gravity. Gravity is an invisible force (看不见的力量) that pulls everything down. Sliders work because of gravity, ① that is not all.
You climb up the slide ② sit down. You are ready to go. Are you sliding down? No, not yet. Things stay still unless (除非) something makes them move. It is Newton’s first law. ③ you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down.
Now you are sliding down. Do you feel you are slowing down a bit? When two things rub (摩擦) against each other, they cause friction. It is a force that works against the movement. Without friction, you will slide down faster and faster to the bottom of the slide. It is dangerous, ④ that might be fun.
At the bottom of the slide, you come to a full stop. Your feet touch the ground and add extra friction. Newton’s first law also says moving things keep moving unless something makes them stop. So if you do not use your feet, you will fly off the slide and hurt yourself.
Which of the following can be put into NO. 1 and NO. 2?

A. ①but ②and ③although ④so B. ①and ②but ③although ④so
C. ①but ②and ③so ④although D. ①and ②but ③so ④although

A. Only heavy things that are lifted can come down from the slide.
B. Things stay still until something makes them move.
C. The water on the leaves will fall because of the friction.
D. According to Newton’s first law, moving bikes can’t stop until the rider presses the brake.

In February 2025, China introduced a nationwide policy to give high school students two full days off every weekend. This change aims to reduce the heavy study pressure that students have faced for years. Before the policy, many students in provinces like Hebei only had one day or even half a day to rest each week. Now, schools are required to cancel all weekend classes and exams, allowing students to relax or explore personal interests.
According to the new rules, teachers cannot give extra (额外) homework during weekends, but schools must keep libraries and sports fields open for students who wish to study or exercise voluntarily (自愿地). In cities like Changsha and Hangzhou, some schools have even started organizing weekend activities such as science clubs art workshops, and community service programs.
Most students welcome the policy. “I finally have time to play basketball and read novels,” said Li Ming, a 16-year-old student. “I feel less tired and more focused during weekdays.” Studies also show that students who get enough rest perform better in exams. For example, a high school in Zhejiang reported a 15% improvement in average test scores after carrying out the policy.
However, some parents still worry. “Weekends used to be important for reviewing lessons. I’m afraid my child will fall behind,” said a parent. Rural (农村的) areas face bigger challenges. In villages where educational resources (资源) are limited, students have fewer chances to take part in after school activities. To solve this, the government ________.

Without the sun, no living things can live on the Earth, including humans. The sun is important. It makes plants grow and produce food. It can also help your body get vitamin D, which makes you stronger. However, after spending long hours in the sun, you may feel tired. Why does the sun make you reel tired?
First, your body doesn’t want to heat up, so it has to use lots of energy to cool itself down and remain its common temperature 37°C. If you feel too tired in the sun, you should take a break and cool down.
The second reason is short of water. When you stay in the sun for long, you will sweat (出汗) a lot, and your body will lose much water. As a result, your blood becomes thicker, which makes it harder for your heart to send blood. And it means less O₂ will be sent to your body. If your body doesn’t have much O₂ inside, you will feel even more tired.
Another reason is sunburn (晒伤), which is your skin’s reaction to the UV (紫外线) in sunlight. As a form of protection, your skin turns red, but this is also tiring for your body.
Warming ray are good for you, but tiredness is your body’s way of telling you that it has enough sunlight in the day. So you should have a good rest.
Do you know the sun very well?
Advantages
All the living things depend on the sun.
·Plants can grow and produce food with the sun.
·____78____.
Disadvantages
Staying for a long time in the sun can make humans ____79____.
Reasons
·The sun heats up humans’ bodies, but it takes much energy to cool down, which makes humans tired.
·Humans bodies lose much water ____80____, which causes the less of O₂ in the body, so humans feel more tired.

The police have many ways of catching criminals. One way of catching them is by fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is the study of the patterns on our fingertips. We have known that no two fingerprints are exactly the same for hundreds of years. However, it wasn’t until 1910 that the first criminal in the USA was convicted (被判有罪) using fingerprint evidence.
52. What helped the police convict the murderer of Hiller?

③Hiller saw a stranger at the top of the stairs.

1 and NO. 2?
56.
A. How fun a slider is! B. How does science make a slide work?
C. How dangerous to slide down with a toy! D. How fast can you slide down a slide?
57.
A. jumping down from the high B. walking on the ground
C. flying in the sky D. throwing a basketball into a basket
1
·It pulls everything to the ground. For example, apples will fall off when they are ripe.
·Slides mainly work because of gravity
It happens when two things rub (摩擦) against each other, like 2 .
·You can slide down safely because of friction.
58. Which of the following is the right order of the missing linking words?
A. ①but ②and ③although ④so B. ①and ②but ③although ④so
C. ①but ②and ③so ④although D. ①and ②but ③so ④although
59. What can you infer from the passage?
A. Only heavy things that are lifted can come down from the slide.
B. Things stay still until something makes them move.
C. The water on the leaves will fall because of the friction.
D. According to Newton’s first law, moving bikes can’t stop until the rider presses the brake.
【答案】56. B 57. B 58. C 59. B

细节理解题。根据“Sliders work because of gravity, ... that is not all.”可知,滑梯因为重力而工作,但不是全部,前后句是转折关系,用but;根据“You climb up the slide ... sit down.”可知, climb up the slide与sit down两者是并列关系,用and;根据“It is Newton’s first law, ... you have to give yourself a push to start the journey down.”可知,这是牛顿的第一定律,所以你必须给自己一个推力,才能开始这段旅程。后句是前句的结果,用so连接;根据“It is dangerous, ... that might be more fun.”可知,这很危险,虽然可能更有趣,前后句是让步关系,用although引导让步状语从句。因此正确的顺序是①but ②and ③so ④although。故选C。
【59题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Things stay still unless (除非) something makes them move.”可知,物体保持静止,除非有外力使它们运动。故选B。

According to the new rules, teachers cannot give extra (额外的) homework during weekends, but schools must keep libraries and sports fields open for students who wish to study or exercise voluntarily (自愿地).

Another reason is sunburn (晒伤), which is your skin’s reaction to the UV (紫外线) in sunlight. As a form of protection, your skin turns red, but this is also tiring for your body.
