Emily, a 14-year-old girl, loved horses, and ___9___ day and night about having one.
“You can’t have a horse as a pet, Emily,” said Mom. “No, I don’t want a horse as a pet. I just want a horse as a friend.”
Emily was shy in school and was friendly to everyone, but she didn’t have any friends. She wasn’t sure why. “I guess I just don’t ___10___,” she thought.
One day, Emily’s mom came home with a leaflet from the market. It was about raising money for a local horse rescue. They need money and volunteers to help the horses. After hearing the news, Emily showed her interest immediately.
Emily’s mom took her to the event that weekend. The horse barn was beautiful, with each horse in its stall. Emily peered over one stall door and saw a small, timid (胆小的) horse standing in the corner.
“Oh, that’s L’il Bit,” said the program director.
Hearing the voice, L’il Bit backed away ___11___.
The director explained, “She’s shy. She doesn’t get much attention from the visitors, because she’s shorter and not as pretty as the other horses.”
“She’s shy like me!” said Emily. “But I think L’il Bit is beautiful.”
Emily’s mind was made up. She asked her mom if she could ___12___. “You can come here after school, but only if you keep up with your schoolwork.” her mom said. Emily was excited.
At first, volunteering was harder than Emily ___13___. L’il Bit wouldn’t let Emily get close. Other volunteers laughed at Emily for spending so much time with the “plain” horse when there were bigger, more beautiful horses to work with. Emily felt ___14___, but she didn’t give up.
One rainy afternoon, Emily was brushing L’il Bit when the horse suddenly nuzzled (轻触) her hand. It was the first time L’il Bit had shown closeness. Emily’s heart was filled with joy. From that day on, their ___15___ grew stronger.
Each day when Emily arrived at the rescue, L’il Bit was waiting, excited to see her. Emily would walk L’il Bit on the lead line, stopping to let her eat grass, and would brush her hair and talk to her like friends did.
In those years Emily became more ___16___ and outgoing. And she made friends both at the center and at school. She knew L’il Bit had changed her life. During the time spent with L’il Bit, she learned to be patient. She learned that trust was not given but earned. And most of all, she learned that how you look on the outside has nothing to do with how beautiful you are on the inside.

10. A. try out B. take care C. fit in D. check in
11. A. angrily B. lazily C. nervously D. seriously

Daniel always loved to draw, and he filled his sketchbooks with colorful creations. At sixteen, he dreamed of becoming a painter hoping to encourage others through his art. But his father, Mr. Carter, a lawyer, disagreed. “Art is just a hobby,” he would say. “Focus on your studies. A stable (稳定的) job is what matters.” Daniel felt sad. Why couldn’t his father see his dream?
One evening, Mr. Carter came home late, tired from work. Finding Daniel at the kitchen table, lost in his sketches, he said angrily, “Daniel, it’s late. You shouldn’t waste time on this.”
Feeling upset, Daniel began to argue, “This isn’t a waste of time, Dad! This is my passion! Why can’t you understand?”
“Because love doesn’t pay the bills!” Mr. Carter shouted. “You need to think about your future, not just what feels good right now.”
Their argument got worse. Suddenly, Daniel stormed into his room, slamming the door. Mr. Carte stood there, shocked.
For several days, they didn’t talk to each other. One Saturday, while walking in the park, Mr. Carter came across an art exhibition. One painting caught his attention: a boy was drawing carefully while his father was sitting beside him, smiling and admiring the painting. It touched him deeply.
When he got home, he found Daniel’s sketchbook on the coffee table. He opened it and was amazed by his son’s talent—the way Daniel showed light and emotion. For the first time, Mr. Carter truly understood: this wasn’t just a hobby; it was Daniel’s passion.
That evening, Mr. Carter went into Daniel’s room and sat beside him. “I went to an art exhibition today,” he said, “and it made me think about your drawings.”
Daniel looked up, a little surprised. Mr. Carter continued, “I’ve been too hard on you. I’m sorry. Your art is amazing!”
Tears welled in Daniel’s eyes. “I wanted you to see me for who I am, not who you want me to be.”
“I see you now, Daniel. And I’m proud of you,” Mr. Carter replied, giving him a big hug.
From that day on, their relationship-improved. Mr. Carter even encouraged Daniel to take an art class. Daniel’s skills greatly developed and soon his paintings won awards.
At one of Daniel’s exhibitions, Mr. Carter said to his son proudly, “You’ve come so far.”
Daniel smiled. “I couldn’t have done it without you, Dad. Thank you!”
20. Why did Daniel want to be a painter in the future?
A. To make a lot of money.
B. To make his father happy.
C. To become as successful as his father.
D. To encourage others with his drawings.
21. How did Daniel’s father feel when he saw the painting of a father and son at the art exhibition?
A. Moved. B. Stressed. C. Proud. D. Disappointed.
22. What can we learn from the story?
A. Happiness depends on success.
B. Children should follow their parents’ advice.
C. Our dreams can’t come true without hard work.
D. Parents should understand their children’ dreams.

Green-Eyed Monster
It is all too human to feel a little envious of others’ success, but what can we do when those feelings threaten to overcome (困扰) us? One reader this month describes anger about a friend getting a better job: “I just can’t help feeling upset about what they’ve achieved.”
The obvious solution to envy would be to avoid comparing ourselves to the people around us, but that is easier said than done. Humans are social by nature, and our position within a group has serious influence on our well-being. As a result, we naturally use others as a measure (衡量) of our own success—a habit that can quickly kill any satisfaction we might feel from our own achievements.
We can see this in how people think about their earnings (收入). Research by Christopher Boyce at the University of Stirling, UK, and his colleagues has shown that how much people earn compared to others in their social group matters more for their happiness than the exact amount they earn. Social comparison can also affect how we see things like education or intelligence: it’s how we match up to others that shapes how good we feel about ourselves, rather than how well we do on our own.
Besides, a “focusing illusion”, which means our habit of focusing on just one aspect of someone’s life, may worsen envy. We imagine that our successful friend is always joyful, and forget that they have to face everyday difficulties like fighting with their family members or losing a pet.
In one study, Ed O’Brien at the University of Chicago and his colleagues asked participants to imagine a peer with a great life. Simply reminding them of the “small problems” this person regularly faced significantly reduced the participants’ envy. We can never know what hidden struggles someone may have, and-realizing this should make us think twice about wishing ourselves in another’s shoes. It should also encourage us to treat them with more kindness.
When we are feeling upset, we might also see another’s success as evidence (依据) that our own goals are achievable. To put yourself in this mindset, try remembering all the things within your control to improve your situation, and make a step-by-step plan of how you might achieve that.
What’s more, why not involve the successful people themselves, and ask them about the challenges they faced and how they overcame them? Learning about those difficulties will probably reduce your unpleasant feelings and increase your drive to take positive action.
We may never run away from social comparison. When life gives us sour grapes, however, we can choose to make wine from those momentarily bitter fruits.
23. Why does the writer talk about “small problems” in Paragraph 5?
A. To explain how envy is reduced by achieving similar success.
B. To suggest that envy appears when people hide their difficulties.
C. To show how envy can be reduced by understanding others’ struggles.
D. To tell us that envy is a result of caring about others’ troubles too much.
24. What can we learn from the passage?
A. It is easy to stop comparing ourselves to others and avoid envy.
B. It is common to measure our happiness by comparing with others.
C. It is useful to focus on just one aspect of others’ life to reduce envy.
D. It is hard to realize our goals are achievable when we see others’ success.
25. What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph suggest?
A We should accept envy as an unavoidable part of life.
B. Social comparison will do harm to our personal growth.
C. We should compare less to deal with our negative emotions.
D. Envy can be turned into a positive force for self-improvement.
D
Imagine this: A student sits at his desk, staring at a hard math problem. Instead of struggling with it, he takes out his phone, snaps a photo, and gets an instant (立刻的) solution from an AI app. Sounds convenient, right? But is this the best way to learn? As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes a bigger part of education, a critical question arises: Should we depend on AI for learning?
There’s no denying that AI tools have significantly changed the educational industry, meeting an individual student’s needs more effectively than traditional methods. AI-driven platforms enable students to receive tailored exercises, allowing them to focus on challenging areas based on their needs. Students who struggle can get patient, 24/7 AI help without feeling judged. AI tools also provide instant responses to quizzes and essays. For instance, Grammarly, a grammar-checking tool, offers grammar suggestions in a flash.
However, relying too heavily on AI may weaken students’ critical thinking skills because it makes students mentally lazy. When students get used to quickly finding answers instead of thinking deeply about problems, they miss out on practicing important skills like analyzing information, building arguments, and finding solutions. A Harvard University study suggests that if this continues, students will develop weaker reasoning skills.
Overusing AI tools may also prevent students from developing essential academic skills. A 2023 study tracked 300 middle schoolers who frequently used AI math helpers. At first glance, these students solved problems more quickly with the help of AI. However, it’s found that their knowledge faded (淡忘) faster than peers who practiced hand calculations (计算), and they struggled significantly when facing new problem types without AI’s support. This creates a dangerous cycle: The less they practice thinking independently, the weaker their core math abilities become.
Another risk of relying on AI is the possibility to spread inaccurate or misleading information. Since Al tools like chatbots produce answers based on patterns in data, they sometimes invent false details. For example, an AI might mix up historical dates. If students swallow AI’s answers hook, line and sinker, they could memorize wrong information as truth.
AI is a double-edged sword in education. It offers impressive benefits but causes risks if misused. To make the benefits of AI tools as great as possible, students need to develop purposeful habits, like limiting AI use to checking work only, asking “why” with AI outputs and discussing AI answers with peers. After all, the human mind—creative and adaptable—is still the greatest tool we have. Let’s use AI to sharpen it, not replace it.
26. Which of the following benefits of AI is mentioned in the passage?
A. Emma uses Labster VR’s 360° visuals to do a biology experiment.
B. Lina uses Kimi to create daily history exercises focusing on difficult topics.
C. The Tingjian AI tool changes speech to text for students with hearing difficulties.
D. Deepseek offers students in small villages the same resources as students in cities.
27. The underlined phrase “swallow AI’s answers hook line and sinker” in Paragraph 5 probably means “_________”.
A. miss the unimportant details B. accept the answers blindly
C. challenge ideas produced by AI D. mix up the information given
28. The writer probably agrees that_________.
A. AI harms critical thinking more than it benefits learning.
B. We should balance AI’s role in difficult tasks and simple work.
C AI shouldn’t be limited to checking work because it can match human creativity.
D. Overusing AI will harm students’ ability to think deeply and solve problems on their own.
29 What is the structure of the article?
A. B. C. D.

Boat life in Britain
Zoe Bulsara’s neighbours are swans, and her mornings begin with misty sunrises over the water. Because of the high cost of housing in the big city, the 24-year-old made a decision to leave her home in Bristol and buy a narrowboat four months ago. She has been living on Britan’s canals (运河) ever since. “Not being tied to one place is a kind of freedom and I love nature,” she says.
The popularity of living on Britain’s waterways has been growing. A recent survey by the Canal & River Trust showed that there were around 35,000 boats on the canals of England and Wales, a third more than two decades earlier. One of the main reasons is the extremely high cost of housing. You can buy a nice narrowboat for about £50,000. That’s only a small part of what an average flat in London costs. The change of working patterns also contributes to (促成) this trend. As more people work from home now. they have more freedom to choose where to live.
During the Industrial Revolution, Britain had a canal network that was almost 6,400 kilometers long. But when railways were built, fewer people used the canals and a lot of canal routes were given up. Keeping a canal network that’s 250 years old costs a lot of money. Last year, the Canal & River Trust spent 40 million pounds on regular maintenance (维护). People who boat on the canals have to pay some of the cost. A license to use the water costs a few hundred pounds each year. This fee makes up about 11% of the Trust’s money. In April, the Trust said that by 2028, boats without a fixed place to stay would have to pay 25% more. There will probably be more price increases after that.
However, life on a boat isn’t all smooth sailing. Washing clothes can be a troublesome task, especially during the cold winter months. Besides, if you don’t have a fixed place to dock (停泊) your boat, having to find a new docking place every two weeks can be a real headache. Even so, the timeless charm of the waterways continues to attract many people. Like Zoe’s “magical” boat life, this lifestyle is worth trying despite challenges.
30. Why did Zoe leave her home in Bristol and buy a narrowboat?

阅读下列短文,掌握其大意,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
My new house was already worrying me before I even moved in. It needed a lot of work, but what ___45___ me more was the neighborhood. I feared the people might be too friendly. At the open house, the seller’s agent told me, “With this place, you wouldn’t just get a home, you’d get a neighborhood.”
She explained that the street had a monthly pizza party, a 40-year tradition started by elderly people. The rules were ___46___: only cheap pizza and homemade cookies or brownies. My husband, a sociologist who loves community life, was thrilled. “We get the pizza parties, too!” he exclaimed. But I complained, “We’re not going.”
I knew how isolation (隔绝社交) harms mental and physical health. Although I am outgoing, I still enjoy my alone time. So I was ___47___ by socializing at the end of the day. In my past rental apartments, I had neighbors who wanted more interaction (互动) than I could handle. Some ___48___ me in long conversations, while others reacted badly when I turned down invitations.
Despite my worries, this house was perfect—plenty of space, trees, and privacy. Even the pizza parties couldn’t scare me away.
After I bought the house, months passed before I moved in. During that time, my lawn (草坪) became an overgrown mess. I worried that my neighbors already ___49___ me. Then, shortly after moving in, a woman from next door introduced herself. “I heard this is your first house,” she said. “You probably don’t own a lawn mower (除草机). yet. Do you?”
I prepared myself for criticism, but instead, she kindly offered her husband’s help. She gave me her number and left quickly, without forcing a long conversation. By the end of the week, my lawn was neat again—not by her husband, but by another neighbor, Justin. When I gave him cookies as thanks, he just smiled and said, “We’re excited to have another good person on the block.”
Other neighbors were just as welcoming. A couple across the street gave me a self-propelled push mower. A doctor’s 7-year-old daughter left toy horses on a tree stump as a welcome gift. When I traveled during a heat wave, Justin’s 13-year-old watered my flowers.
So, by the time the doctor emailed about hosting the next pizza party, I no longer needed ___50___. I jumped up and shouted, “We’re so totally going!” We stayed longer than expected, chatting with neighbors as the sun set over the flowers.
Since then, we’ve fully joined the community. We attended a Halloween gathering where I dressed in costume for the first time in 20 years and went sledding with the kids on a snow day. My once-feared neighbors had shown me kindness and ___51___ for my boundaries (边界), teaching me a lesson I didn’t realize I needed.
Now, I’m the one excitedly greeting neighbors, bringing small gifts for the doctor’s daughter, and stopping to pet a neighbor’s dog. My husband jokes, “You need a dog.” Maybe so. But for now, I have something just as valuable—not just a home, but a ___52___.
45. A. worried B. confused C. interested D. destroyed
46. A. logical B. standard C. simple D. unclear
47. A. surprised B. refreshed C. changed D. tired

50. A. stopping B. pushing C. allowing D. suggesting
51. A. reason B. need C. excuse D. respect
52. A. party B. house C. neighborhood D. space
十二、阅读理解(共6分, 每小题2分)
阅读下列短文,根据短文内容,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择最佳选项。
Does math make you anxious? If this is you, you’re not alone. Math anxiety is a widespread problem affecting all age groups, though a small number of people find joy in the logic and predictability. Ben Orlin, a math lover, believes that many people struggle with math because they weren’t taught effectively. To Orlin; math is a system of communication and a way to share ideas. He suggests that we should view it as a language.
The language of numbers began with counting
The practice of counting started 40,000 years ago, and this led to the naming of numbers. Early humans used counting to track changes of moon and agricultural (农业的) cycles, while modern computers use counting for complex tasks. Our base-10 system likely appeared because we have 10 fingers, making counting and naming numbers simpler.
How to speak math
So, you might ask, “Where are the words?” “Isn’t math mostly numbers and operations like adding ‘+’, subtracting ‘—’, multiplying ‘×’ and dividing ‘÷’?” “How can one be expected to read these funny symbols and commands?”
Think of those numbers like nouns. A noun defines a person, place or thing. And a noun gives each of those things its identity. For instance, seven has no meaning but is an adjective to describe something else. Think of “seven flowers” and the phrase “beautiful flowers”. Here, seven and beautiful both serve as descriptors. The adjective beautiful gives birth to the noun beauty. In much the same way, the adjective seven gives rise to the noun seven. Thus, a number is a2 noun born from an adjective.
What's a mathy verb?
If numbers are comparable to nouns, what in math is similar to verbs?
Since verbs tend to signify action, a mathematical operation—such as “plus”—can be treated like an action between numbers. For example, the plus sign in 2+3 can be used as more than just a symbol, but like a verb (“add”), or a conjunction (“and”). In this way, operations are not just a set of instructions, but also a grammatical structure for math.
As for negative numbers, it is more like a linguistic (语言的) trick. If you think mathematically of phrases like “10 degrees below zero”, you could represent the temperature as “-10℃”. The minus symbol “-” can represent prepositions like “below” or “before”.
Make sense of abstract (抽象的) math concepts
To make it easier to understand-abstract concepts, Orlin suggests that teachers should connect them with something concrete (具体的) in the real world, such as negative numbers and debt (债务). For example, when teaching sixth graders, it’s easier for them to get the idea of negative numbers if they connect it with the idea of debt. Making analogies (类比) with real-world concepts can help make sense of abstract math concepts, thus reducing math anxiety.
Will the ideas catch on?
Some experts support this approach, seeing it as a way to teach and communicate math more effectively. They note that thinking of math as a language can help students understand and communicate mathematical ideas more clearly. However, others are worried that treating math as a language might bring about challenges for non-native English speakers.
However, Orlin’s approach provides a fresh perspective by linking math to everyday language and real-world concepts, aiming to reduce anxiety and make it more interesting.

A. We should accept envy as an unavoidable part of life.
B. Social comparison will do harm to our personal growth.
C. We should compare less to deal with our negative emotions.
D Envy can be turned into a positive force for self-improvement.
【答案】23. C 24. B 25.

27. The underlined phrase “swallow AI’s answers hook, line and sinker” in Paragraph 5 probably means “_________”.
A. miss the unimportant details B. accept the answers blindly
C. challenge ideas produced by AI D. mix up the information given
28. The writer probably agrees that_________.
A. AI harms critical thinking more than it benefits learning.
B. We should balance AI’s role in difficult tasks and simple work.
C. AI shouldn’t be limited to checking work because it can match human creativity.
D. Overusing AI will harm students’ ability to think deeply and solve problems on their own.
29. What is the structure of the article?
A. B. C. D.
【答案】26 B 27. B 28. D 29. A

根据第五段“If students swallow AI’s answers hook, line and sinker, they could memorize wrong information as truth.”
根据第三段“relying too heavily on AI may weaken students’ critical thinking skills”和第四段“they struggled significantly when facing new problem types without AI’s support . The less they practice thinking independently, the weaker their core math abilities become.”
故选A。

阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

Doing chores helps us grow, not just help parents. Here are three reasons why teenagers should do housework. First, it develops life skills. Cooking teaches us to feed ourselves, and organizing makes us independent. These skills are useful for living alone. Second, chores build responsibility. Finishing tasks on time makes us reliable, which helps studies and work. Third, doing chores with family improves teamwork. We communicate better and understand each other, making family bonds stronger.

He also challenges traditional teaching. by encouraging students to focus on the structure of math expressions. Ultimately, Orlin sees math as a tool for understanding the world, viewing it as a language to demystify (揭开神秘面纱) it and highlight its beauty, logic, and practicality.
53. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Viewing math as a language can help reduce anxiety and improve understanding.
B. Numbers can be viewed as nouns while operations can be viewed as adjectives.
C. Early humans used to count for artistic purposes and invented base-10 system.
D. Non-native English speakers will find it easier if math is taught as a language.
54. According to Orlin, which of the following explanations helps make sense of the math concepts in “-4+7”?
A. “-4+7=7-4; -4+7=3”
B. “The answer is 3 because subtracting 4 from 7 leaves 3.”
C. “Please remember that when adding a positive and negative number, subtract the smaller number from the larger one.”
D. “Imagine you have a debt of $4 (represented by -4), and them you earn $7. After paying your debt, you have $3 left.”
55. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To criticize traditional methods of teaching math.
B. To introduce an approach of teaching and learning math.
C. To explain the reason why math is difficult for most people.
D. To compare math with other subjects like English and science.
【答案】53. A 54. D 55. B
