B Han Kang, the South Korean author best known for her extraordinary novel, “The Vegetarian,” was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday - the first writer from her country to receive the award. Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that Han was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic writing that bravely discusses historical events and exposes the fragility of human life.” Han, 53, was born in 1970 in Gwangju, South Korea. Her father was also a novelist, but much less successful. The family struggled financially and moved frequently. In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.” When Han was 9, her family moved to Seoul just months before the Gwangju uprising (起义), when government army fired on crowds of protesters, killing hundreds. The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising. “It was like two unsolvable riddles imprinted on my mind: How can humans be so violent, and how can humans be so noble?” she said. “When I write novels, I find myself always returning to the theme of what it means to be human.” Han studied literature at Yonsei University in Korea, and her first published works were poems. Her first novel, “Black Deer,” which came out in 1998, was a mystery about a missing woman. In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.” 4. What are Han’s novels themed at? A. Political systems. B. Financial struggle. C. Human nature D. Cultural conflicts. 5. What can we learn about Han’s childhood from paragraph 3? A. Father’s success: inspired her. B. Economic difficulty strengthened her. C. Frequent move destroyed her. D. The habit of reading comforted her. 6. Why does the author mention the Gwangju uprising? A. To indicate the importance of history. B. To show its influence on Han’s writing. C. To reveal the cruelty of politics. D. To stress its impact on Korean people’s life. 7. What is “The Vegetarian” mainly about? A. A deer. B. A woman. C. A plant. D. A vegetable. C With the sudden breakthroughs in artificial intelligence over the last year, a sudden realization has come for those of us in the writing circle that the robots have come for our jobs at last. Recently, Hollywood writers went on a strike over concerns about being replaced. It ended in a modest victory, but it seemed like a losing battle, like the 18th-century craftsmen trying to stop new machines but in vain. The replacement of physical labour by machines was often beneficial in itself, even if it did not feel that way at the time. In all previous waves of technological change, the jobs lost have been made up for by the jobs created, usually better ones. Can the same be said when it comes to writing? Language is hard-wired into us, which is the property of human. Writing is how we do our best thinking, as Joan Didion observed, “I don’t know what I think until I write it down”, and thinking is what makes us human. What happens when we no longer rely on our own thoughts to address more complex problems? Probably it won’t come to that, or not yet. I remember when we said the same thing about computers playing chess, the technology is still in its early stage. In a few years, we may no longer be able to tell the difference. What then? Most likely the first writing to be replaced will be patterned writing like business and promotional writings. It may be that writers will take on a role similar to today’s artisans and craftsmen, pride for their “handmade” honour. The best writing may be produced neither entirely by computer nor by humans, but by the two combined. For however it is produced, some writing will always be better than other writing. Who says? You, the reader. It may be possible to teach a computer to write, but only a human can feel the pleasure of reading, or the pain. 8. What was the main concern of Hollywood writers? A. The increase in working hours. B. The use of AI in writing rooms. C. The decrease in salaries for them. D. The lack of full control over work. 9. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. We are born with language. B. Language is hard to replace. C. Language is difficult to change. D. We benefit from language. 10. What might be the first type of writing to be replaced by AI? A. Creative fiction writing. B. Scientific research paper. C. Advertisement and brochure. D. Children literature and poetry. 11. What would be the best title of the text? A. Can AI redefine human’s future? B. Will the pen be mightier than AI? C. Is AI a threat to human creativity? D. Will literature be dead due to AI? D Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use to communicate. They say wild chimps communicate 19 specific messages to one another with a “vocabulary” of 66 gestures. The scientists discovered this by following and filming groups of chimps in Uganda, and examining more than 5,000 incidents of these meaningful exchanges. Dr Catherine Hobaiter, who led the research, said that this was the only form of intentional communication to be recorded in the animal kingdom. Only humans and chimps, she said, had a system of communication where they deliberately sent a message to another group member. “That’s what’s so amazing about chimp gestures,” she said. “They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.” Although previous research has shown that apes and monkeys can understand complex information from another animal’s call, the animals do not appear to use their voices intentionally to communicate messages. This was a significant difference between calls and gestures, Dr Hobaiter said. Chimps will check to see if they have the attention of the animal with which they wish to communicate. In one case a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signaling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mothers back and they travel off together. “The big message from this study is that there is another species (物种) out there. that is meaningful in its communication, so that’s not unique to humans,” said Dr Hobaiter. Dr Susanne Shultz, an evolutionary biologist from the University of Manchester, said the study was praiseworthy in seeking to enrich our knowledge of the evolution of human language. But, she added, the results were “a little disappointing”. “The vagueness of the gesture meanings suggests either that the chimps have little to communicate, or we are still missing a lot of the information contained in their gestures and actions,” she said. “Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animal convey with non-verbal communication. So, it seems the gulf remains. ” 12. What do chimps and humans have in common according to Dr Hobaiter? A. Memorizing specific words. B. Understanding complex information. C. Using voices to communicate. D. Communicating messages on purpose. 13 What did Dr Shultz think of the study? A. It was well designed but poorly conducted. B. It was a good try but the findings were limited. C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable. D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise. 14. What does the underlined word “gulf” in the last paragraph mean? A Difference. B. Conflict. C. Balance. D. Connection. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthrough B. Chimpanzees developed specific communication skills C. Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdom D. Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated How to Boost Self Motivation Motivation is what drives you to take positive action. ____16____. Here are some tips to help us stay motivated. Set goals. ____17____. The first step to achieving a dream is to turn it into a series of goals. A long-term goal will be the ultimate dream — let’s say, setting up a new business. Short-term and medium-term goals will be the stages on the road to the final goal. Avoid Loans. Having some money behind you before you set off on your quest for success is good. Do not, however, try to fund your life with loans and credit cards. Avoid them if you can. When you are faced with a failure, don’t just let it defeat you. Remember that you have already overcome other blocks. ____19____. Trusting your capacity for success is a brilliant motivator. His parents were successful lawyers in the city. This made their daily routine very busy. But Dylan’s grandmother Erica came to their rescue and offered to take care of him. Dylan loved living with his grandmother. Every morning, his grandmother would make him a healthy breakfast. After a bath, they would go for a walk in the neighborhood. She would hum (哼) a tune, and Dylan would join her singing. After a musical morning, Dylan would be accompanied to wait for the school bus. Every night the grandmother would sing for Dylan until he fell asleep. It was naturally that Dylan was musically gifted. He wanted to perform at his school’s annual party this year. But his parents wanted him to focus on his studies. They wished that Dylan became a successful lawyer, too. He was slightly disheartened at how his parents dismissed his love for music. However, having finished the school assignments, he also stuck to playing with his favourite music. He always shared a beat he created with his grandmother. “Dylan, I’m amazed at how passionately you make music. And the best thing is that you put your individuality into your music. If you really love music, keep on it. Don’t let anyone stop you.” Hearing what his grandmother said, Dylan was greatly inspired. From that day on, Dylan’s passion for music burned brighter than ever before. He spent countless hours honing (训练) his skills, experimenting with different sounds, and exploring various genres. With his grandmother’s unwavering support and encouragement, Dylan felt like he could conquer the world with music. One evening, as Dylan sat in his room, playing his guitar, he came up with a melody (旋律) that conveyed his deepest emotions. C 5. D 6. B 7. 根据文章第二段中“Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, which organizes the prize, said at a news conference in Stockholm that Han was receiving the honor “for her intense poetic writing that bravely discusses historical events and exposes the fragility of human life.” (组织该奖项的瑞典文学院常任秘书马茨·马尔姆在斯德哥尔摩的新闻发布会上说,韩江获奖“是因为她激烈的诗歌写作,勇敢地讨论历史事件,暴露了人类生活的脆弱”。)”和倒数第二段中“When I write novels, I find myself always returning to the theme of what it means to be human. (当我写小说时,我发现自己总是回到作为人类意味着什么的主题上。)”可知,韩江的小说主题聚焦于人性。故选C。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章第三段中“In a 2016 interview with The Times, Han said her childhood experience “was too much for a little child, but I was all right because I was surrounded by books.” (在2016年接受《纽约时报》采访时,韩女士表示,她的童年经历“对一个小孩子来说太多了,但我还好,因为我被书包围了。”)”可知,书籍成为了她童年时期的慰藉。故选D。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章倒数第三段“The event shaped her views on humanity’s capacity for violence, Han said in the 2016 interview. She also recalled seeing images of people who lined up to donate their blood to those who were injured in the uprising. (她在2016年的采访中说,这件事塑造了她对人类暴力能力的看法。她还回忆起看到人们排队为在起义中受伤的人献血的画面。)”可知,提到光州起义是为了展示这一事件对韩江写作的影响。故选B。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段中“In the 2016 interview, Han said it was around that time that she developed the idea for a short story about a woman who becomes a plant, which she eventually developed into “The Vegetarian.” (在2016年的采访中,韩江说,大约在那个时候,她萌生了写一个关于一个女人变成一株植物的短篇故事的想法,她最终把这个故事写成了《素食者》。)”可知,《素食者》主要是关于一个变成植物的女人的故事。故选B。 C With the sudden breakthroughs in artificial intelligence over the last year, a sudden realization has come for those of us in the writing circle that the robots have come for our jobs at last. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第一段“Recently, Hollywood writers went on a strike over concerns about being replaced. It ended in a modest victory, but it seemed like a losing battle, like the 18th-century craftsmen trying to stop new machines but in vain.(最近,好莱坞作家因担心被取代而举行了罢工。这场战争以温和的胜利告终,但似乎是一场必败之战,就像18世纪的工匠们试图阻止新机器的出现,但却徒劳无功)”可知,好莱坞作家们抗议的主要原因是他们担心自己的工作被AI取代。故选B项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据后文“which is the property of human(这是人类的属性)”可知,语言是人类的固有属性,推知 hard-wired的意思是“天生的,固有的”,与之意义最接近的是“be born with”, 意思是“与生俱来的”。故选A。 根据最后一段“Most likely the first writing to be replaced will be patterned writing like business and promotional writings.(最有可能被取代的第一批文字将是商业和宣传类的模式化文字)”可知,最有可能首先被AI 取代的写作类型是那些模式化的写作,如商务促销类写作。“广告和宣传册”这类写作通常结构固定,规则性强,目的是为了促销推广,因此更容易被AI模仿和取代。故选C。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“With the sudden breakthroughs in artificial intelligence over the last year, a sudden realization has come for those of us in the writing circle that the robots have come for our jobs at last. Recently, Hollywood writers went on a strike over concerns about being replaced. It ended in a modest victory, but it seemed like a losing battle, like the 18th-century craftsmen trying to stop new machines but in vain.(随着去年人工智能的突然突破,我们这些写作圈的人突然意识到,机器人终于来抢我们的工作了。最近,好莱坞作家因担心被取代而举行了罢工。这场战争以温和的胜利告终,但似乎是一场必败之战,就像18世纪的工匠们试图阻止新机器的出现,但却徒劳无功)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要讨论了人工智能在写作领域的进步以及对作家职业的潜在威胁,探讨了技术进步如何影响工作,所以B项“Will the pen be mightier than AI?(笔会比人工智能更强大吗?)”是本文最佳标题。故选B项。 D Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees (黑猩猩) use to communicate. In one case, a mother presents her foot to her crying baby, signaling: “Climb on me.” The youngster immediately jumps on to its mothers back and they travel off together. 13. What did Dr Shultz think of the study? A. It was well designed but poorly conducted. B. It was a good try but the findings were limited. C. It was inspiring but the evidence was unreliable. D. It was a failure but the methods deserved praise. 14. What does the underlined word “gulf” in the last paragraph mean? A. Difference. B. Conflict. C. Balance. D. Connection. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Chimpanzee behaviour study achieved a breakthrough B. Chimpanzees developed specific communication skills C. Chimpanzees: the smartest species in the animal kingdom D. Chimpanzee language: communication gestures translated 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. But, she added, the results were a little disappointing.(曼彻斯特大学的进化生物学家苏珊娜·舒尔茨博士说,这项研究是值得称赞的,它试图丰富我们对人类语言进化的知识。 首先根据第三段中的“They’re the only thing that looks like human language in that respect.(在这方面,它们是唯一看起来像人类语言的东西)”可知,黑猩猩的手势交流很像我们人类语言的交流方式。但是根据最后一段中的“Moreover, the meanings seem to not go beyond what other animals convey with non-verbal communications.(此外,这些含义似乎并不超越其他动物通过非语言交流所传达的信息)”可知,黑猩猩手势的交流方式还是和我们语言的交流方式存在不同的,也就是“So, it seems the gulf remains.(所以,看来差异依然存在)”。 故选A。 根据第一段的“Researchers say they have translated the meaning of gestures that wild chimpanzees use to communicate.(研究人员表示,他们已经翻译出了野生黑猩猩用来交流的手势的含义)”以及文章对这方面的讨论可知,文章主要讲科学家们对黑猩猩手势的研究及一些成果。 How to Boost Self Motivation Motivation is what drives you to take positive action. ____16____. The first is self-motivation, which comes from within ourselves. The second is motivation from external sources. How do we get motivated and more importantly, how do we stay motivated? Here are some tips to help us stay motivated. Set goals. ____17____. The first step to achieving a dream is to turn it into a series of goals. A long-term goal will be the ultimate dream — let’s say, setting up a new business. Short-term and medium-term goals will be the stages on the road to the final goal. Avoid Loans. Having some money behind you before you set off on your quest for success is good. Do not, however, try to fund your life with loans and credit cards. Avoid them if you can. Worry over debt is another way of destroying self-motivation. If your dream is to set up a business, keep the business finances separate from your personal finances. Do not, for example, be tempted to use your house as security for any business loans you might be arranging. ____18____. Have self-belief. When you are faced with a failure, don’t just let it defeat you. Remember that you have already overcome other blocks. ____19____. Trusting your capacity for success is a brilliant motivator. You know you can solve the problem facing you because you have done it before. ____20____. You will already have drawn up your plan of action and the timetable for carrying it out. Keep this in mind at all times, and you will continue to be motivated. Your plan itself is a source of self-motivation. Review your progress from time to time to make sure that you are still on course for success. A. Stick to the plan B. Keep your motives in mind C. Motivation comes in two types D. Our dreams are usually a bit unclear E. Believe in yourself and your abilities F. This is another unavoidable cause of stress G. It is important not to worry about losing motivation 【答案】16. C 17. A long-term goal will be the ultimate dream — let’s say, setting up a new business. Short-term and medium-term goals will be the stages on the road to the final goal.(实现梦想的第一步是把它变成一系列的目标。 【18题详解】 根据前文“Avoid them if you can. Worry over debt is another way of destroying self-motivation.(如果能避免就尽量避免。 设空句上文“Do not, for example, be tempted to use your house as security for any business loans you might be arranging.(例如,不要试图用你的房子作为你可能安排的任何商业贷款的担保)”建议不要用房子去作担保贷款,结合前文可推知,这样做会带来额外的压力,会破坏自我动力,F选项“This is another unavoidable cause of stress. E选项“Believe in yourself and your abilities.(相信你自己和你的能力)”直接表达了自信的核心内容,与段落主题紧密相关。同时,该选项也与前文“Remember that you have already overcome other blocks.(记住,你已经克服了其他障碍)”和后文“Trusting your capacity for success is a brilliant motivator.(相信你的成功能力是一个极好的动力)”相呼应,共同强调了自我信念的重要性。 根据下文“You will already have drawn up your plan of action and the timetable for carrying it out. Keep this in mind at all times, and you will continue to be motivated. Your plan itself is a source of self-motivation. Review your progress from time to time to make sure that you are still on course for success.(你们应该已经拟定了行动计划和执行计划的时间表。 故A选项“Stick to the plan.(坚持计划)”是最佳小标题。故选A。 At 65 years old, Warburton experienced great changes in her life. He once again explained his love for music and conveyed his wish to showcase his musical talent at the school event. To convince them of his determination, Dylan even played the new music he created to them. To his surprise, his parents listened intently and exchanged a glance before speaking. “Dylan, we’ve realized that music means a lot to you. Your passion and dedication are evident. We want you to be happy and pursue your dreams.” Dylan’s heart was filled with joy as he heard his parents’ words of acceptance. The day of the performance arrived. As Dylan stepped onto the stage, he glanced at his parents and his grandmother, who were beaming with pride. He knew that this was his moment to shine. With each play of his guitar and every word that flowed from his mouth, Dylan poured his heart into his performance. The audience was captivated by his soulful voice and the emotions he conveyed through music. Applause filled the air as he finished his performance. Tears welled up in Dylan’s eyes as he took a bow, feeling an overwhelming sense of accomplishment. He had not only proven himself to his parents but also to himself. 表达:express/convey ②.说服:convince/persuade ③.完成:finish/accomplish 情绪类 ①.惊讶:surprise/astonishment/amazement ②.高兴的:happy/glad/delighted 【点睛】[高分句型1].
