She and I had this conversation almost every day while we were in high school. The truth was that my friend never failed in any subjects. I just think that she can't accept failures because she lives her life as a perfectionist (完美主义者). What she fails to understand is that a lot of good can come from failures. For example, failure can help build relationships. Once was cooking dinner for a friend. I was tired, and several dishes I tried to make turned out bad. I grew more and more upset until my friend told me that I shouldn't worry. She cared more about our friendship than the dishes. That day, I learned that failure doesn't always make people dislike you. In fact, after she said those words to me, I grew closer to her. Failure can make success ever more exciting. Every few years, there would be an important test in the PE class at our school. Students had to run a mile within eight minutes. I was never good at running, so I failed every time until the third year at school. Then I began working out regularly, and yet I still failed that year. A few days later, however, the teacher gave me and some other students another chance to run and I got a pass finally! You can 't imagine how excited I was after that. I felt the memory of the success was as sweet as honey, because I had to overcome failure to reach it. Now its clear to see that failure can teach us good lessons. It's not an end—it can be a beginning. 4. What can we learn about the author's best friend from the first two paragraphs? A. She liked taking tests. B. She was afraid of failures. C. She often failed in study. D. She knew how to be perfect. 5. What did the author finally get from a failed cooking? A. Bad feelings. B. Worries. C. A closer friendship. D. More experience. 6. Why did the author feel excited after the running test? A. Because she could work out regularly. B. Because she received honey as a reward. C. Because she got another chance to take the test. D. Because she achieved success after many failures. 7. The author wrote this passage________. A. to show the negative effects of failures B. to point out her best friends fear of failures C. to encourage the readers to face failures bravely D. to introduce different types of failures C Most of us know that eating too much sugar isn’t good for us. Because of a close connection between its consumption and health dangers like obesity, fatty liver disease, type 2diabetes, heart disease and cancer, sugar is high on the lists of bad habits worth giving up. It turns out that reducing sugar intake (摄入) not only helps you avoid the harm of overconsumption, it can also bring surprising results you won’t have to wait long to benefit from. “These include improved mood, skin health, dental hygiene, cognitive function, and even athletic performance,” says Amy Goodson, a nutritionist and registered dietitian. The first thing to understand is that not all sugar is bad for you because there’s a big difference between natural sugars and added sugars. Natural sugars like glucose in bread, fructose in fruit and many vegetables, and lactose in milk are natural. They not only provide energy but also offer sweetness to encourage us to eat the foods that contain something important for our health. Added sugars are what are introduced to foods or drinks during processing, cooking, or at the table. There are more than 260 names for various added sugars, which are added, most commonly, to sweeten or improve the taste of often unhealthy and over-processed foods. Worse, foods with added sugars don’t provide meaningful amounts of nutrition. The harm connected with eating or drinking too many added sugars is big and includes an increased risk of developing autoimmune disorders such as Crohn’s disease and higher blood pressure, and increased risk of different cancers. A 2023 BMC Medicine study also shows that even a five percent increase in added sugars comes with a six percent higher risk of heart disease and a ten percent higher risk of stroke. “Such harm occurs in part, because any consumed sugar that isn’t used for energy is stored as fat, which results in increased weight gain, leading to diabetes, obesity, and related bad results,” says Elaine Hon, a clinical dietician and education specialist at Stanford Health Care. 8. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Results of overconsumption. B. Possible sugar-connected problems. C. Benefits of eating less sugar. D. Tips on how to reduce sugar intake. 9. What does the text say about natural sugars? A. They help us eat more healthy foods. B. They should be consumed properly. C. They provide little energy for bodies. D. They are always in processed foods. 10. What do the numbers in paragraph 6 show? A. Giving up sugar is a must. B. Added sugars are harmful. C. A balanced diet is important. D. The 2023 study is unbelievable. 11. What does Elaine Hon try to do in the last paragraph? A. Call for an action. B. Raise some questions. C. Give an explanation. D. Offer practical advice. D A big rise in plastic pollution has been uncovered by scientists, who have calculated that more than 170tn plastic particles (微粒) are afloat in the oceans. They have called for a reduction in the production of plastics, warning that “cleanup is futile” if they continue to be thrown into the environment at the current rate. The research, by the 5 Gyres Institute and published in the journal Plos One, evaluates trends of ocean plastic from 1979 to 2019. The authors noted a rapid increase of marine plastic pollution and blamed the plastics industry for failing to recycle or design for recyclability. Dr Marcus Eriksen, the co-founder of the 5 Gyres Institute, said, “The exponential (指数级) increase in microplastics across the world’s oceans is a warning that we must act now at a global range, stop focusing on cleanup and recycling, and create an age of corporate responsibility for the entire life of the things they make.” The researchers looked at 11,777 samples of floating ocean plastics to create a global time series that estimated the average counts and mass of microplastics in the ocean surface layer, lining up the data with international policy measures aimed at reducing plastic pollution to evaluate their effectiveness. It found that from 2005. there had been a rapid increase in the mass of ocean plastic. The scientists estimate at least 170tn plastic particles are present in the oceans, with a combined weight of about 2 million tonnes. They say without immediate global action on plastic production, the rate of plastic entering aquatic environments is expected to increase about 2.6-fold from 2016 to 2040. Researchers have warned that international policies on plastic are fragmented (碎片的), lack specificity and do not include measurable targets. They have called for corporate responsibility for plastic production to be enforced globally, with legally binding legislation (立法) that addresses the full life cycle of plastic, from extraction and manufacturing to its end of life. 12. What does the underlined word “futile” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. Demanding. B. Pointless. C. Effective. D. Useful. 13 What is to blame for the rise in plastic pollution in the oceans according to Paragraph 2? A. Government policy. B. The fishing industry. C. The plastics industry. D. Failure to warn people timely. 14. What is the researchers’ suggestion on addressing the issue? A. Encouraging individuals to recycle more. B. Focusing on cleanup and recycling initiatives. C. Increasing plastic production to meet global demands. D. Calling for collective responsibility for plastic production. 15. What is the main issue addressed in the text? A. The rise in plastic pollution in the oceans. B. The increasing demand for plastic products. C. The need for better ocean cleanup initiatives. D. The advancement in plastic recycling technology. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Every child should know some basic first aid skills.
