In the age of smartwatches, Grandpa’s old repair shop on Maple Street was like a time capsule (时间胶囊). The sign moved in the wind: Henson’s Clock & Watch Repair—Since 1952. I spent summers there, watching Grandpa fix pocket watches with tiny tools, his small glass catching the sunlight.
One afternoon, a young woman rushed in with a digital watch. “It’s not working,” she said. Grandpa opened the back, checked the small parts, and shook his head. “It needs a new piece. I can order it, but it’ll take a week.” The woman sighed (叹息), “Buying a new one is faster!” and left in a hurry.
Grandpa turned to an old grandfather clock on his table. Its gold numbers were fading (褪色) “People don’t have patience for old things anymore,” he said. “They look for new things but lose the happiness of fixing what’s broken.”
That summer, Grandpa taught me to repair a 1920s alarm clock. I had trouble with the small parts, my hands getting wet. “Slow down,” Grandpa said. “Time isn’t about rushing. It’s about understanding.” When the clock finally worked, its bell felt like a big win—more enjoyable than any new app on my phone.
Years later, I visited home and saw the shop was gone, replaced by a modern tech store. I felt sad until I found Grandpa’s old worktable in the garage (车库). It was full of old tools and half-fixed clocks. He was sitting there, fixing a pocket watch. “Come help,” he smiled. “This watch has waited 30years for someone to care.”
As I held the watch, the garage was quiet except for the soft tick-tock of a nearby clock. Grandpa’s hands moved slowly, yet surely. Outside, the world was full of new things and quick messages, but here, time seemed to stand still. Maybe some things are worth waiting for.

Elephants are known for their high intelligence empathy (同理心), and communication skills. A new study suggests they may have another amazing ability: They may give each other special “names”—an ability that no other non-human animals are known to have.
The lead researcher Dr. Michael Pardo said, “We all know that dolphins and parrots try to copy each other’s sounds to communicate. But our findings suggest elephants don’t depend on imitation. They seem to use the way in which human names work.”
The research team included Dr. Joyce Poole. Many times, she noticed an elephant calling out, with only one replying. The rest of the group would continue feeding, seeming not to hear the call. This led her to wonder if the elephants called each other by specific (特定的) names.
For their study, the team chose over 600 recorded elephant calls, or “rumbles”. They all seemed to be directed to specific elephants. These calls were collected over almost 30 years from wild elephants.
Elephants’ low-frequency sounds are hard for humans to understand. The researchers turned to machine learning tools to analyze (分析) them. The computer model correctly guessed the receiving elephant’s identity (身份) 28% of the time. While the number may seem low, the researchers say the elephants probably don’t use names all the time.
To make sure of the findings, some of the rumbles were played back to 17 wild elephants through a speaker. Sure enough, the elephants only replied to calls meant for them.
The study was in Nature Ecology and Evolution. Next, the researchers will go on to find out whether elephants also “name” other important things, like food, water, and locations.

B. Only the elephant that was called can hear the sound.

Elephants are known for their high intelligence, empathy (同理心), and communication skills.

Most of us like making plans, but not all of them can be achieved.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
Most of us like making plans, but not all of them can be achieved. Sometimes, though we make great efforts, we fail to complete what we set out to do. This can be disappointing, but understanding why our plans fail helps us improve.
In my opinion, the reasons are as follows. First, some plans take a long time, making it hard to stick to them. Second, people sometimes set goals that are too high, such as trying to achieve everything too quickly. Finally, many people give up easily when facing difficulties.
There are ways to avoid failure. Break big plans into smaller and manageable steps. And finding a partner to share the journey provides encouragement and helps you to keep going. Don’t forget to give yourself a gift or treat yourself to something delicious when you make progress.
