In 2005, Calvin Echevarria was on top of his game. He had two jobs, bought a house and was raising a 3-year-old daughter with his wife. But suddenly, it felt like it was all being taken away. He could no longer work as a FedEx driver because he was going blind.
He was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy. “All I care is about my wife and my daughter,” he told CBS News. “I’m like, ‘How am I going to see my daughter grow?’”
Echevarria at first worked on developing independent living skills like walking with a cane. But he wanted to learn more — like skills that would be useful for a job. That’s when he found Lighthouse Works in Orlando, a company that creates jobs for the visually impaired and blind.
“Seven out of ten Americans who are visually impaired are not in the workforce,” said Kyle Johnson, the president and CEO of Lighthouse Works. “And we knew that people who are blind are the most highly educated disability group on the planet. So, we created Lighthouse Works to help them to work and contribute.”
What began as Lighthouse Central Florida in 1976 has evolved. The organization originally focused on helping the blind and visually impaired learn independent living skills and enter the workforce. But in 2011, they created Lighthouse Works in Orlando, their own company that provides call center and supply chain services and hires people who are blind or visually impaired. At Lighthouse Works, nearly half of the employees are visually impaired or blind.
Echevarria said working in a fully accessible office space, with other visually impaired people who can relate to him, is an added benefit. “It gives me a purpose. It makes me feel better because I can actually be proud of myself,” he said. His original worry was not being able to be there for his daughter. Now, he’s her mentor, because she’s an employee at Lighthouse Works as well.
8. Which proverb can best describe Calvin Echevarria’s life experience?
A. Life is full of ups and downs.
B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. Misfortune may be an actual blessing.
D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
9. Why did Kyle Johnson set up Lighthouse Works in Orlando?
A. To make the blind live happily. B. To help the blind recover their sight.
C. To enable the blind to serve society. D. To help the blind become independent.
10. What can we learn about Lighthouse Works in Orlando?
A. It was set up over 40 years ago. B. Most of its employees are blind.
C. It provides jobs for blind people. D. It mainly teaches the blind life skills.
11. How did Calvin Echevarria feel about his life?
A. Worried. B. Satisfied. C. Confused. D. Pessimistic.

What if a city bench (长凳) could provide a place not just to sit but also to breathe a little easier? That is the idea behind CityTree, a 14-foot-high energy-efficient bench covered with moss (苔藓).
CityTree is the invention of Peter Sanger, 29, a gardening expert and the CEO of Green City Solutions. The company seeks to answer a challenging question: How can we bring nature into the city and use its positive effects on the atmosphere at scale?
The idea struck Sanger when he learned about the cleaning effects of various plants, particularly moss, as a university student. “That’s what got me excited — finding that the solution to air pollution lies in nature, he says. “After all, nature has millions of years of experience in making air pure (纯净).”
From the outside, the CityTree looks like a bench with a tower covered in moss. But inside is a fully automated system that provides enough water for moss to grow. The built-in IOT (物联网) technology monitors its performance and conditions, as well as providing environmental data from the surrounding area.
According to Green City Solutions, the CityTree improves the air quality around it by up to 53% and can cool the surrounding air by 4℃. The unit can provide a pleasant period of breathable air in places where people tend to stay.” Think of a bus stop on a busy street, a street cafe, even an inner-city schoolyard.” he says.
However, the CityTree is just the beginning. Its next generation is a slimmer model that contains a digital screen on one side and a moss wall on the other.
12. What is the text mainly about?
A. An air-cooling product. B. An idea for purer city air.
C. Sanger’s life experiences. D. The problems of air pollution.
13. What was Sanger excited to learn about as a university student?
A. The application of moss. B. Humans’ dependence on nature.
C. Nature’s solution to air pollution. D. The diversity of air-cleaning plants.
14. Where is a CityTree device most likely to be found?
A. At the seaside. B. In a rose garden.
C. In a street market. D. On top of a mountain.
15. The text is most likely from ________.
A. a science magazine B. a travel guide
C. a medical journal D. a biology textbook

根据上文的“Su Shi, who was born in Meishan in today’s Sichuan Province, passed the imperial civil service examinations to obtain the prestigious title of Jinshi (or ‘Presented Scholar’) when he was only 19. (苏轼出生于今四川眉山,19岁时通过科举考试获得了 prestigious 的“进士”头衔。)”可知,苏轼年少中举,而科举中举后通常会进入仕途。E选项“As a result, he later served in a number of government offices”(因此,他后来在多个政府部门任职)中的“As a result”表明因果关系,“served in a number of government offices”是对他中举后经历的合理承接,符合语境。故选E项。
根据上文的“However, this highly talented scholar seemed to be always at odds with a political faction headed by the then prime minister, Wang Anshi. (然而,这位才华横溢的学者似乎总是与当时首相王安石为首的政治派别不和。)”及下文“Therefore, Su was banished (驱逐) several times and lived in political exile (流放) for many years in various places around the country. (因此,苏轼多次被驱逐,并在全国多地政治流放多年。)”可知,此处需要说明苏轼与王安石不和的具体行为。G选项“Su frequently wrote poems and essays criticizing Wang’s reforms and the government’s policies(苏轼频繁写诗作文批评王安石的改革和政府政策)”中的“criticizing Wang’s reforms”具体解释了他与王安石派系不和的原因,“frequently”强调其行为的经常性,与“banished”形成因果逻辑,符合语境。故选G项。
根据上文“But Su played a crucial role in the history of Chinese poetry. He founded a school of expressive poetry and he often combined vivid descriptions of natural phenomena with deep emotions and political ideas. (但苏轼在中国诗歌史上扮演了关键角色。他创立了豪放派诗歌,常将自然现象的生动描写与深厚情感和政治思想结合。)”及下文“Among them, Battle of Red Cliffs, Jiang Chengzi, The Immortal by the River and quite a few other poems are deemed the most notable. (其中,《赤壁赋》《江城子》《水调歌头》等诸多诗作被视为经典。)”可知,此处需衔接他的诗歌创作数量与影响。A选项“More than 2,300 of his poems have survived(他有2300多首诗流传下来)”中的“More than 2,300”体现了其诗歌创作的丰富性,“have survived”引出下文具体诗作的举例,符合语境。故选A项。
根据下文“and he left behind a rich trove of cultural heritage. Even today, many places have built pavilions, bridges, statues and memorial halls to exhibit Su’s poems, paintings, calligraphy and lyrics. (他留下了丰富的文化遗产。如今许多地方修建亭台楼阁、桥梁、雕像和纪念馆,展出苏轼的诗、画、书法和词作。)”可知,此处需要说明苏轼的经历与各地文化遗产的关系。C选项“Su’s life in exile took him to many parts of the country(苏轼的流放生涯带他到过全国许多地方)”中的“life in exile”与前文“political exile”呼应,“took him to many parts of the country”解释了各地修建纪念设施的原因,即他在流放中影响了多地文化,符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“Su took his pen name from a rural place called Dongpo (Eastern Slope), where Su lived during his first exile. (苏轼的笔名取自东坡,他首次流放时居住的地方。)”及下文“According to legend, Su created the dish of stewed pork totally by accident. He actually overcooked the stew as he concentrated on a chess game and forgot what he was preparing. (相传,苏轼偶然创制了炖猪肉这道菜。他因专注下棋忘了正在煮的东西,结果炖肉煮过了头。)”可知,此处需建立笔名与菜名的联系。D选项“Later the name was given to a famous dish, Dongpo Pork(后来这个名字被赋予了一道名菜——东坡肉)”中的“the name”指代“Dongpo”,“Dongpo Pork”与下文“dish of stewed pork”呼应,明确了笔名与东坡肉的渊源,符合语境。故选D项。

__________ __________ __________ many times, he still repeated the same mistake
Having ②. been ③. told
故填①Having②been③told。
(用be worth…
The film __________ __________ __________ __________.
【答案】 ①. is ②. well ③. worth ④. watching
故填is well worth watching。
We have already __________ __________ __________ __________ the country.
【答案】 ①. done ②. some ③. research ④. on
故填①done②some③research④on。

Let him learn the hard way
Paul was with me in the kitchen helping me out with the dishes. From his facial expression and his unmistakable body language I knew he wanted to ask something. Paul is doing his second year in a famous high school. I have always been afraid of spoiling him with my love as he is my only child.
We are well placed in life. Both of us – my husband and I-are human resource executive (主管). As I was about to switch off the kitchen light. Paul came near me with pleading eyes. “Mom. Our school is organizing a trip to the Yellow Stone National Park this time. They are charging only 200 per student, which covers all expenses--train tickets, food and stay. Mom, please, please let me go. I have more than a month’s time to pay the money. And we are going only in our holidays.”
I did not know what to say. My motherly nature was to say an immediate yes to see a smile on my son’s face, But I should not spoil this nice kid. So, I said to him, “Paul, I need to talk to Dad. Can I tell you tomorrow morning?”
“Thanks. Mom.”
After talking with my husband, we agreed to let him go but make him earn the money.
“Paul, Dad and I thought about your trip. Yes, in principle it’s okay for us. But you have to earn it. You said that you have more than a month to pay the money.”
“Thanks a lot, Mom. I shall surely save the money well before the due date.”
“And Paul, I would like to know the progress you make every day. So, let me know how much you have got on a day-to-day basis. You shall write that on this board, Okay?”
“Okay. Mom. Thanks once again.”

Despite my concern and anxiety, Paul seemed to enjoy the process.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I started keeping track of the money he made every day. When I gave him pocket money two days later, he set aside the entire amount for the trip. He was having lunch with just $2 or $3 every day and was saving about $1 a day. Seeing the amount go up day by day, I felt both relieved and worried. As a matter of fact, many a time did I want to just hand over the money and say “Go and and enjoy” But I told myself that I was doing this only for his good.
Despite my concern and anxiety, pal seemed to enjoy the process. Thus, what I did in the following days was just witness him record the amount and give him a high five. Two days before the due date when he arrived home after school, he cried with excitement, “Mom, I made it!” seeing the bright smile in Paul’s face and the shaking fist in triumph, I hugged him tightly with grateful tears in my eyes. I was sure that he would enjoy the trip better through making the money himself by a little sacrifice.

Echevarria said working in a fully accessible office space with other visually impaired people who can relate to him, is an added benefit.

A. To make the blind live happily. B. To help the blind recover their sight.
C To enable the blind to serve society.

That is the idea behind CityTree a 14-foot-high energy-efficient bench covered with moss (苔藓).

“Thanks.
