Karen was 84 years old and depended on a wheelchair to get around because she was missing a leg. Her son, Johnny Lauder, tried repeatedly to get her to leave, but she refused. Johnny and his whole family live within a few blocks of one another. They kept in touch with Karen as the storm continued violently (猛烈地) outside, watching the water rising dangerously all around them. When Karen reported that the water in her house had reached her bottom, Johnny knew he had to take action. First, Johnny ensured his sons and their pets were taken care of. Then, he jumped out of a window and began to swim. Johnny used to work as a rescue swimmer. He is obviously a strong swimmer, but the flood water was filled with dangerous materials. There was also a strong current (水流), and he had to swim against it for most of his trip to Karen’s. As he made his way through the water, Johnny stopped periodically to snap selfies (自拍) to show his worried family that he was okay. Johnny was racing against the clock. He knew he only had a short period of time to get there before the water rose above Karen’s head. It took him 40 minutes to swim four blocks. The sound of Karen shouting inside was music to his ears! “If it would’ve been 20 minutes later, she wouldn’t be here,” Johnny said. “She’s never been happier to see me.” Karen is now safe, although she is in the hospital being treated for infections (感染) she got in the water. The family have all lost everything they owned, including their houses, but they’ re grateful just to be here. 4 Why did Karen refuse to leave her house when the hurricane came? A. She was too old to move. B. She missed one of her legs. C. She thought the storm was not violent. D. She lost her wheelchair and was unable to leave. 5. When we feel happy, we can listen to some music which makes us happier; if we feel sad and frustrated, we can choose the music which gives us power and makes us refreshed. If we are introverted people, we can listen to the music which makes us more outgoing. Above all, I’ve stated so many effects of music. We have so many beautiful melodies in the world which could make our life more and more pleasant. So I think we should thank the people who create music, who use rhythms to express various feelings and things as we use articles and languages to express our thinking. So nice! They create the great music, while music makes our world even better. I love music forever! 8. Which of the following is not the reason for the author’s love for music? A. The government says the service will promote safety for climbers and allow people to post selfies as they climb Africa’s tallest mountain at 5,895 meters. The mountain, created by volcanoes and rising out of a large, open flat area, is part of Kilimanjaro National Park in the northeast of Tanzania. Around 50,000 people visit the park each year. But climbing such a tall mountain isn’t easy. Roughly one-third of the people who try to climb it are forced to give up. The new internet service should make it easier for climbers to reach the top. They can use the internet to check maps and find their way, or call for help if they need it. Currently, the new service reaches more than halfway up the mountain. The government says that by the end of the year, climbers will get internet even at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The government says safety is the main reason for setting up the internet service on the mountain. As Tanzania depends heavily on tourists, having people post pictures and videos on social media as they climb Mount Kilimanjaro could certainly make the spot even more popular with tourists. Some people in Tanzania are upset that the government is focusing on internet for tourists instead of the livelihood of people living in the country. One study in 2020 showed that only about 83% of the people living in Tanzania can get cell phone service where they live. It also bothered people who were worried that the project might affect the environment on the mountain. Scientists have already warned that the glaciers on top of Mount Kilimanjaro may melt in the next 10 years. So far, the cable car project doesn’t seem to be making much progress. 12. D Tanzanian government has set up a high-speed internet service on Mount Kilimanjaro, which was named a World Heritage site in 1987. When Mom asked about his homework, he pulled out his math worksheet but left the rest in his backpack. So easy! Before long, though, his backpack was growing heavy with unfinished homework. The problem was, as the backpack got heavier, so did his heart. Jay feared seeing the look on his parents’ faces when they found out. Walking in the door, he dropped his heavy backpack and walked into the kitchen. “Hi, Mom,” he said. She hugged him and stood back. “Jay, I got an email from your teacher today. She said you lied about your homework. We need to talk. ” 注意: 1.续写词数应为80左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Jay sat at the table and buried his head in his arms. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
