Passage 2
Dear David,
I have to go to a different school because of my parents’ wishes. But I’m quite close to my friends and teachers here. What can I do to feel better?
Angel
Dear Angel,
That’s a hard question. It’s understandable that you’re sad. I think you should write a card or note to each of your friends and teachers. You can share your feelings and say how much you’ll miss them. To feel better, you can also write out some of your feelings. These things will help you get ready to move on to something new. Change is always hard, but it also opens many new doors. If you can go into it with happy thoughts, you’ll be able to enjoy it much more.
Well, it’s natural to feel shy and stay away from your new classmates and teachers. It takes time for us to adapt to a new environment. I think it is a good idea to talk to your partner first. You may begin with a brief introduction. For example, you can talk about your old school, the place you live and your interests. These topics may sound a little bit personal. However, they can break the ice.
I was also sad to leave my friends when I came to China. However, I’ve made new friends here and many things here make me feel right at home. So, while it’s normal to feel sad, accept the change and look at it in the right way. It may be exciting and you’ll make new friends. You just need to be ready.

The phone calls to the flower shop didn’t help, either. After a while, I gave up and was just pleased with the yearly beautiful white flower wrapped (包裹) in soft pink paper.
However, I never stopped imagining who the giver might be. Some of my happiest moments were spent daydreaming about this sender. My mother encouraged these daydreams. She would ask me if I had been especially kind to someone. Maybe it was one of my classmates. Maybe it was the old man who lived across the street. I had sent letters for him during the winter. But, as a girl, I had more fun imagining from the sender to be some boy I had met.
A month before I graduated (毕业) from high school, my father passed away. I was so sad that I became completely uninterested in my upcoming (即将来临的) graduation dance. Would I have a new dress to wear to it? I didn’t care at all. However, my mother wouldn’t let me miss any of those things. She wanted her children to feel loved. 根据“Once upon a time in a small village, there was a toy train that was not very big or strong.’”可知,其他火车嘲笑小火车的原因是它不大也不强壮,故填Because it was not very big or strong.
【42题详解】
根据第一段“A new group of toys had arrived at the top of a steep (陡峭的) hill, and none of the larger engines could pull the toys down to the village.”可知,村民们遇到的问题是玩具无法从山上运到山下的村子里。故填The toys couldn’t be pulled down to the village.
【43题详解】
根据倒数第二段“Slowly, but surely, the little engine made progress, but it never stopped...with its positive attitude (态度) and perseverance (毅力), managed to (成功地) move the toys down the hill.”可知,小发动机靠着积极的态度和坚强的毅力,从不放弃,完成了这项工作,故填It never stopped with positive attitude and perseverance.
The story teaches us that no matter how difficult a task seems or how small we feel, believing in ourselves and maintaining a positive attitude with determination can help us overcome any challenge and achieve the impossible.

Angel
Dear Angel,
That’s a hard question.

Every year on my birthday, ever since I turned twelve, a white gardenia (栀子花) would be sent to my house. I had tried to find out the sender’s name, but no card ever came with the flower.
In fact, my mother wanted her children to see themselves much like how I came to see the gardenia: lovely and strong, with perhaps a bit of mystery (神秘感).

When I was about 12, I had an enemy (敌人), a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much and so on. I tried to hear all the shortcomings (缺点) as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, “Are the things she said true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever want to know what you were really like? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark (标记) the true points. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change like being very thin, but a good number of them I could. Suddenly, I wanted to make changes. For the first time, I had a very clear understanding of myself.
I brought the list back to Dad. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said. “You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, when something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you.”
“Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t close your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do the right things.” I have remembered my dad’s advice at many important moments. In my life, there has never been a better piece of advice.

“I think I can; I think I can,” the little engine talked to itself as it began the task. The other engines laughed and called out, “You’re too small! You’ll never be able to do it!” But the little engine continued to chant, “I think I can; I think I can.”
Slowly, but surely, the little engine made progress, but it never stopped. The villagers and the other engines watched in amazement as the little engine, with its positive attitude (态度) and perseverance (毅力), managed to (成功地) move the toys down the hill. When the little engine finally reached the bottom, the villagers cheered, and the other engines stood in silence.
