It was my birthday, and I was celebrating it as I had for years: Watching the annual Perseid meteor shower (流星雨). But this time, as the meteors flashed across the sky, I, a junior girl, began to question, “Could my lifelong love for astronomy be more than a hobby?”
I grew up in a small town, where even graduating from high school was not a given for many students. But I was driven to pursue my education, and like my best friend’s dad — a pharmacist (药剂师), one of the few professional role models in my neighborhood; therefore, I chose to major in pharmacy, the science of preparing medicines, at the University of North Carolina.
The university was only a 3.5-hour drive away, but it felt across the universe. In the weeks since I began my pharmacy degree, I had met people with jobs and PhDs in different branches of science I had never considered — neuroscience, archaeology, and even astrophysics. Their passion and knowledge opened my eyes to worlds I had never imagined. As my birthday and the Perseid meteor shower approached, I was faced with a decision: Should I stick to my long-standing plans or take a step into the unknown?
Ultimately, a solar eclipse (日食) helped me make my decision. As the Moon gradually shaded the Sun, the world darkened around me. The stillness of the water, the desperate calls of birds, and the fading sunset deeply moved me. I knew what I had to do. I dropped out of pharmacy school to pursue previously unimagined options.
Facing years of challenges and growth, I worked odd jobs before earning a second degree in physics, starting a PhD in astronomy, and realized that the night sky’s vastness inspired me to overcome doubts and follow my dreams. As I approach the final year of my PhD, I realize that growing up with the night sky gave me a valuable gift. It gave me an insight into life: On the scale of our vast universe, our individual needs, desires, fears, and insecurities shrink to insignificance, bringing humanity together. It liberated me from allowing earthly worries, shame, or self-doubt to stand in the way of pursuing new dreams.
24. What motivated the author to major in pharmacy?
A. Her ambition to become a doctor. B. The encouragement of her friend.
C. Her childhood passion for pharmacy D. The impact of her best friend’s father.
25. How did the author’s experience at university shape her?
A. It helped her stick to her belief. B. It opened her mind to new ideas.
C. It enhanced her pharmacy study. D. It developed her thinking abilities.
26. What can we learn from the author’s understanding of life?
A. Accepting insecurities helps us handle challenges.
B. Personal problems still matter in the vast universe.
C. It’s vital to pursue dreams despite personal challenges.
D. It is small and unimportant things that mean a lot to us.
27. Which of the following best describes the author?
A. Caring and patient. B. Modest and honest.
C. Generous and helpful. D. Curious and determined.

Scientists with the BrainGate research center have developed a breakthrough brain-computer interface (BCI). The system aims to restore communication for individuals with speech disabilities caused by conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which lead to the gradual loss of mobility and speech. It uses implanted sensors to interpret brain signals when a user attempts to speak, transforming them into text that is read aloud by a computer. The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine on August 14, was led by David Brandman and Sergey Stavisky, faculty members at UC Davis Health.
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects nerve cells controlling muscle movement. BCI technology can restore communication for those affected. In this study, Casey Harrell, a 45-year-old man with ALS, regained the ability to communicate effectively within minutes of using the system. Harrell described the experience as life-changing, saying, “My past condition was so demoralizing. Not being able to communicate seems as if you were trapped. Something like this technology will help people get back into life and society.”
The BrainGate clinical trial, led by Dr. Leigh Hochberg from Brown University, has made major progress in interpreting brain signals to help people with paralysis (瘫痪) communicate. In July 2023, the UC Davis team implanted a BCI device into Harrell’s brain, focusing on the left precentral gyrus, a part of the brain that controls speech. The system translates brain activity into phonemes (音素) and words, enabling real-time communication. Harrell’s BCI generated speech with a voice similar to his own, using software trained with existing voice samples of his voice before he developed ALS. This allowed him to connect with his loved ones in a deeply personal way.
Over 32 weeks and 248 hours of use, the system achieved remarkable results, with 99.6% accuracy for a 50-word vocabulary in 30 minutes of training and 90.2% accuracy for a 125,000-word vocabulary after 1.4 additional training hours. “This is transformative technology,” Brandman said. “It provides hope for people who want to speak but can’t.” Dr. John Ngai, director of the NIH’s BRAIN Initiative, highlighted the milestone as a major step in restoring communication for individuals locked in by paralysis.
28. What do we know about the BrainGate BCI?
A. It is used to treat speech disabilities. B. It translates brain signals into speech.
C. It helps people with ALS move and speak. D.It connects brains to make computers smarter.
29. What does the underlined word “demoralizing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Discouraging. B. Demanding. C. Comforting. D. Eye-opening.
30. Why was the speech composed in Harrell’s previous voice?
A. To enable his communication in real time. B. To make his speech emotionally meaningful.
C. To improve the accuracy of speech translation. D. To help interpret his brain signals more easily.
31. What is Dr. John Ngai’s attitude towards the BrainGate BCI?
A. Dismissive. B. Unclear. C. Cautious. D. Favourable.

Decision fatigue (决策疲劳) is a psychological phenomenon where the quality of decisions declines after a long session of decision-making. It is caused by the limited mental energy we have for making choices each day. While many of us believe we are logical beings capable of weighing every option carefully, decision fatigue shows how our mental resources can be used up over time.
One of the key studies on this phenomenon was conducted in the context of parole hearings Researchers found that judges were more likely to approve of parole early in the day or after a meal break. As the day progressed and the judges made more decisions, they were increasingly likely to maintain their previous decisions, denying parole simply because it required less mental effort.
Decision fatigue not only affects major life choices but also everyday decisions. For instance, people often report struggling to decide what to eat for dinner after a long day. Similarly, too many choices, such as when looking through streaming platforms or online stores, can leave individuals feeling confused, leading them to abandon the process entirely or settle for a less satisfying option.
To overcome decision fatigue, some well-known figures have adopted strategies to simplify their daily routines. For example, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is famous for wearing the same style of gray T-shirts to minimize unnecessary choices. Similarly, Nobel Prize-winning physicist Albert Einstein was known for owing multiple identical suits to avoid wasting energy on deciding what to wear each day. In a different context, author Haruki Murakami has shared that he maintains a strict daily routine, including specific writing hours and exercise, to free up mental capacity for his creative work.
Understanding decision fatigue can help us structure our lives more effectively. Prioritizing important decisions earlier in the day or setting up routines to minimize unnecessary choices are strategies to preserve mental energy. By managing our mental resources wisely, we can make sound decisions and reduce the stress associated with overwhelming choices.
32. What leads to decision fatigue according to the text?
A. The lack of time to make decisions. B. The difficulty of making logical choices.
C. The stress from making important decisions. D. The limited mental energy for decision-making.
33. What does the study on parole hearings reveal?
A. Judges are much stricter after long breaks.
B. Decision fatigue can lead to unfair outcomes.
C. Fatigue causes judges to avoid complicated cases.
D. External factors have no impact on decision-making.
34. What does the author suggest readers shopping online do?
A. Make quick decisions. B. Compare different products.
C. Limit the number of choices. D. Choose the most popular products.
35. What is the purpose of adopting routines?
A. To increase decision-making quality. B. To reduce the stress of daily work.
C. To enhance overall life satisfaction. D. To create more decision-making chances

It was a cold, snowy evening. Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing but his destination — the shop on the street corner. Two weeks ago, he saw figurines(手办) of Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He's been walking the neighbor's dog ever since then to earn money to realize his little dream. He was so excited and hardly noticing the world around him. Maybe that's why he tripped over the legs of a homeless woman, who was sitting on the sidewalk, her back against the wall. He murmured(低语)“sorry” and moved on to his destination.
Once he entered the shop, he went straight to the shelves with figurines. Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and many more — all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding like crazy he reached for Spiderman.
“You like these, true believer?”
Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face. “Y-yes ... Yes, they're awesome!” answered Tommy. “They're strong and fast and help other people a lot...” the boy looked at figurines in admiration. “I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“Then become one!” said the old man.
“How?” Tommy asked in surprise. “I don't have any superpowers.”
“And why would you need them?” the old man smiled. Seeing the confusion on the boy's face, he squatted(蹲下)and put his hands on Tommy's arms. “Did you know, that shopkeeper lady over there has a disabled husband? She's been working hard and taking care of him for years. I've never heard a word of complaint from her. And this person—” he pointed at a redhead man, who just entered the shop. “He's a firefighter; he's saved countless lives. He never gives up, no matter how dangerous the situation seems to be.”
The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. “You don't need a superpower to be a hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the heart.”
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely.________________

Should Community Service Be a Graduation Requirement?
Whether community service should be a requirement for graduation has sparked heated debates. While community service has its benefits, I do not believe it should be a compulsory graduation requirement.
First of all, students already face heavy academic pressure, and adding required community service could increase their stress. In addition, forcing students to volunteer may lead to insincere
participation—some might do it just for credits rather than genuine care. Finally, not all students have equal opportunities to engage in community service due to family responsibilities or financial pressure, making it unfair to require it for graduation.
From my point of view, instead of making it compulsory, schools should encourage voluntary participation by highlighting its value. Only in this way can students who truly want to contribute do so willingly.

Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes, thinking intensely. The old man’s words echoed in his mind: "You don’t need superpowers to be a hero." Suddenly, he realized that true heroism wasn’t about strength or speed—it was about kindness and action. He glanced up at the old man and asked hesitantly, "So… even small things can make someone a hero?" The old man didn’t answer but simply smiled, his eyes twinkling with encouragement. Tommy’s grip on the Spiderman figurine loosened. After a moment of silence, he carefully placed it back on the shelf and hurried to the counter, buying a slice of bread and a bottle of water instead.
The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time. Tommy approached her nervously, holding out the food. "Here… for you," he mumbled, avoiding her gaze. The woman stared in disbelief, her lips trembling. Before she could utter a word, Tommy turned and dashed away, his heart pounding not with excitement for a toy, but with warmth from her stunned yet grateful expression. As he ran, her face flashed in his mind—wrinkled, tearful, yet lit with hope. The snowy wind stung(刺,叮,咬) his cheeks, but Tommy grinned(咧嘴笑). He had taken his first step on the path of a superhero, and it felt surprisingly simple.

范文二
Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely. Finally, he raised his head. “So I am supposed to ...” he stopped mid-sentence when he realized that he was alone. He turned his head left and right, but the old man was nowhere to be seen. Tommy sighed heavily — he already had an idea of what he should do. He looked at figurines for the last time and moved towards the counter. "Two sandwiches and a cup of tea please," he said.
The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time. Tommy came closer and carefully gave the woman his buys. Her eyes opened wide in surprise, then filled with tears. "Thank you," she whispered. Tommy bowed his head, turned around and went back home. He was moving faster and faster and finally he started to run. Strange energy filling his body made him feel like he could fly. When he finally stopped, he was breathing heavily, but he didn't feel tired. He smiled happily—it was a wonderful feeling. And nothing could stop it.

“So I am supposed to ...” he stopped mid-sentence when he realized that he was alone. He turned his head left and right, but the old man was nowhere to be seen.
Tommy came closer and carefully gave the woman his buys. Her eyes opened wide in surprise, then filled with tears. “Thank you,” she whispered. Tommy bowed his head, turned around and went back home.
Tommy sighed heavily — he already had an idea of what he should do. He looked at figurines for the last time and moved towards the counter. “Two sandwiches and a cup of tea please," he said.
He was moving faster and faster and finally he started to run. Strange energy filling his body made him feel like he could fly. When he finally stopped, he was breathing heavily, but he didn't feel tired. He smiled happily - it was a wonderful feeling. And nothing could stop it.

W: Similarly, Tom, it’s a great honor to introduce you to our home in Tahiti. But I’m sorry for forgetting the words in Hawaiian that you taught me before.
M: The pleasure is mine. What a joy to watch the best surfers in the world compete. I always forget that Tahitian’s first language is French. I’m afraid I can’t help you with that.

M: Deal. (12)Over one hour later, we’ll introduce this year’s competitors and judges while they get ready to start. (13)Before this, there will be a five-minute section with the Tahiti tourism board, our chief advertiser for this event.

M: It’s not the holiday; it’s travelling on the plane that I’m worried about. I hate take-offs.
W: But you’ve done these many times before. You never said anything when we went to Spain.
M: It started on that flight to America nine years ago. (14)When we rise very quickly, it really makes my stomach turn. When the plane races down the track, the engines scream loudly.
W: Okay, well, we’re finally about to take off. You just need to calm down. Here, takes my hand. (15)What are you looking forward to the most about visiting Greece? The beaches? The museums? Or maybe it’s the late evenings, relaxing by the bar with a drink.
M: I… Oh dear, here we go. (16)Well, I’d love to go visit local villages, you know, see how real Greeks live, have a walk, have a drink and a bite to eat in the local restaurants and… and… Oh dear.

【Text 10】M: (20)Florence Nightingale was born into a wealthy British family on may twelfth 1820. (18)She was named Florence after the place of her birth, Florence in Italy. Working as a nurse, she saved the lives of many soldiers during the Crimean war. She was devoted to her profession and worked hard day and night. Florence Nightingale changed the way that hospitals cared for their patients. Before, hospitals were overcrowded and dirty places. This meant that diseases were easily spread. There weren’t enough doctors or beds to go around, so people often didn’t get the care they needed. (19)Florence Nightingale changed all of this by making hospitals cleaner places. She also trained more nurses to help care for patients. She made sure patients were well looked after and had good food to eat, which saved many lives. Florence met Queen Victoria, who awarded her the Royal Red Cross medal. Every year on may twelfth, her birthday, nurses celebrate International Nurses’ Day. Florence opened a school of nursing and wrote a book called Notes on Nursing. King Edward the seventh gave Florence a special award called the order of merit in 1907. She was the first woman to receive this award, and she changed the way that women were seen in the workplace. She died in 1910.

根据文章第一段“The system aims to restore communication for individuals with speech disabilities caused by conditions like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which lead to the gradual loss of mobility and speech. It uses implanted sensors to interpret brain signals when a user attempts to speak, transforming them into text that is read aloud by a computer.(该系统旨在为因肌萎缩侧索硬化症(ALS)等疾病导致行动能力和言语能力逐渐丧失的患者恢复交流能力。它利用植入的传感器来解读用户尝试说话时的大脑信号,并将这些信号转换成文本,最后由计算机朗读出来)”可知,BrainGate BCI系统的主要功能是将大脑信号转化为语音,帮助那些因疾病失去言语能力的人恢复交流能力。故选B。
【29题详解】词句猜测题。根据下文“Not being able to communicate seems as if you were trapped.(无法交流就像被困住了一样)”可知,哈雷尔过去因为无法交流而感到非常沮丧和受挫,由此可知,“demoralizing”意思是“使沮丧的、使失去信心的”,与A项:Discouraging意思相近。故选A。
根据第三段“Harrell’s BCI generated speech with a voice similar to his own, using software trained with existing voice samples of his voice before he developed ALS. This allowed him to connect with his loved ones in a deeply personal way.(哈雷尔的脑机接口使用在他患上ALS之前的语音样本训练的软件,生成了与他自己的声音相似的语音。这使他能够以非常个人化的方式与亲人交流)”可知,用哈雷尔患ALS前的声音来组成语音是为了使他能够以非常个人化的、富有情感意义的方式与亲人交流。故选B。

【33题详解】推理判断题。根据第二段中“Researchers found that judges were more likely to approve of parole early in the day or after a meal break. As the day progressed and the judges made more decisions, they were increasingly likely to maintain their previous decisions, denying parole simply because it required less mental effort. (研究人员发现,法官在一天早些时候或饭后休息后更有可能批准假释。随着一天的进行,法官做出的决定越多,他们就越有可能维持之前的决定,仅仅因为减少精神努力而拒绝假释)”可知,随着法官做出的决定增多,他们因为决策疲劳而倾向于维持之前的决定,这可能导致不公平的假释结果。由此可推知,关于假释听证会的研究揭示了决策疲劳可能导致不公平的结果。故选B项。
【34题详解】推理判断题。根据第三段中“Similarly, too many choices, such as when looking through streaming platforms or online stores, can leave individuals feeling confused, leading them to abandon the process entirely or settle for a less satisfying option. (同样,太多选择,比如在浏览流媒体平台或网上商店时,会让个人感到困惑,导致他们完全放弃这个过程或选择一个不太满意的选项)”可知,作者提到网上购物时太多的选择会让人困惑。由此可推知,作者建议网上购物的读者限制选择的数量,以避免决策疲劳。故选C项。
【35题详解】细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Prioritizing important decisions earlier in the day or setting up routines to minimize unnecessary choices are strategies to preserve mental energy. (在一天中较早地优先处理重要决策或制定常规以最小化不必要的选择,是保存精神能量的策略)”可知,制定常规的目的是为了保存精神能量,从而提高决策质量。故选A项。

S. and China tell stories about peers who perform better than others.(一项由布朗大学的教育心理学家进行的研究探讨了美国和中国的幼儿园儿童如何讲述关于比其他同龄人表现更好的同伴的故事。)”可知,此处提到了布朗大学的一项研究,结合下文的“Chinese children often expressed respect for high achievers and a desire to imitate their success. In contrast, U. S. children’s stories typically focused on negative reactions, including envy and being left out.
【38题详解】根据上文的“In American culture, the “self” is defined by qualities, and abilities, which are largely fixed. Thus, while the achievement of others reflects their high ability, it becomes a mirror to reveal one’s own lack of ability.(在美国文化中,“自我”是由那些大多固定不变的品质和能力所定义的。因此,虽然他人的成就反映了他们高水平的能力,但这也成为了一面镜子,映照出自己能力的不足。)”可知,此处阐述了美国文化对“自我”的定义以及因此带来的影响,结合下文的“As a result, Chinese children tend to view others’ achievements not as signs of natural superiority, but as opportunities for learning and self-improvement.(因此,中国儿童倾向于将他人的成就视为学习和自我提升的机会,而不是自然优越性的标志。)”
【39题详解】分析语篇可知,此处应为本段的主题句,结合下文“In China, students’ overall performance may be publicly recognized to encourage success and motivate further improvement. Teachers even invite outstanding graduates to share their experiences and lessons with current students to promote learning. In the U. S., such phenomena are less common as they can be seen as threats to self-esteem.(在中国,学生的整体表现可能会被公开认可,以鼓励成功并激励进一步的改进。
40题详解】根据下文的“These narratives, in other words, determine whether we feel threatened or inspired, fearful or respectful, annoyed or eager to copy others.(换句话说,这些叙述决定了我们是感到受到威胁还是得到激励,是感到恐惧还是尊敬,是感到恼怒还是渴望模仿他人。)”
