B We all talk about good and bad habits, but do we really know what a good habit or a bad habit is? Take brushing your teeth, for example. Everyone thinks it is a good habit, but there are times when it is not. Carl’s dentist told him that his teeth became bad because of over brushing. Wanting to keep them healthy, he brushed his teeth for fifteen minutes after every meal; he was also brushing too hard. Most habits have both advantages (优点) and disadvantages. In this book, The Habit Change Workbook, I’ll help you decide which habits you need to change. First let’s meet two people with “bad habits”. Betty liked shopping best. It made her relaxed and helped her forget her worries. She also shopped when she was bored or had nothing to enjoy. Betty showed her love by buying and giving gifts to friends. She especially enjoyed a big sale. When she found a sale, she’d often buy two, three or more of the same thing. Betty used credit cards (信用卡) to pay, making it difficult for her to pay the bills each month. Jeff was busy and didn’t have time to cook healthy meals. He often had fast food on the way to and from work. His kitchen was full of junk food. Jeff was fat. His doctor told him to eat less and gave him a diet plan, but Jeff couldn’t follow it. Jeff also had problem sleeping. 24.Why does the writer mention (提到) Carl at the beginning? A.To teach us how to tell good habits from bad ones. B.To show that a good habit can have bad results. C.To show us that he has good habits. 25.In which part of a magazine can we probably read this text? A.Lifestyle. B.News. C.World. 26.What do we know about Betty? A.Sometimes she shopped when she was worried. B.She always wanted to get gifts from her friends. C.She didn’t have any credit cards. 27.How does the writer show his ideas? A.By listing numbers. B.By giving examples. C.By describing a picture. C New research has found that just like natural engineers, wild horses are good at digging wells (挖井) in deserts (沙漠) which provide valuable drinking water. This helps other animals too, as black bears and American badgers (獾) have been found drinking at the wells. A team of researchers from Australia, Denmark and the US set up far-away cameras at four places in deserts in the US. Wild horses had used their feet to dig wells two meters deep at these places, so they could reach water under dry riverbeds and small rivers. The cameras were used to watch the places and were set to record whenever an animal walked by. The scientists saw many horses moving around, but they were most interested in which other animals came to drink at the wells. Over three summers, beginning in 2015, the team saw 57 kinds of other large animals visiting the wells, including wild cats and deer. The team also found that the wells gave water to desert plants. Researcher Erick Lundgren, from Aarhus University in Denmark, described the wild horses as “natural engineers”—animals that change the environment around them. Perhaps the best known natural engineers are beavers (河狸). Beavers cut down trees with their teeth, creating space in woods where sunlight can reach smaller plants and allow them to grow. Then beavers use the wood to build walls across rivers, which help clean pollution in water and protect their homes. More than 12,000 years ago, several kinds of horse-related animals lived in North America but they all died out (灭绝). Today’s wild horses develop from animals that were brought to America by humans in the past few hundred years. By digging wells that help other animals, they may be doing the same kind of work to shape the environment as their long-gone relatives (亲缘物种) once did. 28.Why did the wild horses dig the wells? A.To protect themselves. B.To kill other animals. C.To get drinking water. D.To create living space. 29.What can we learn about the wells? A.They were dug with horses’ teeth.
