My father always firmly believed in me — the same way that I believe in you. That’s why, after graduating from high school in New York, your grandparents sent me on a trip to Asia to learn more about life. I landed in India as a fresh-faced 18-year-old kid with endless curiosity about the world. There, I worked at a school in exchange for food and a place to stay. Although I didn’t earn any money, I was happy and learned so much about life. From there, I flew to Australia and got my first job. This position wasn’t an office job or anything fancy. I painted houses in the sun for 12 hours a day. I’m telling you this story not to encourage you to have a similar experience, but to inspire you to do as much as you can in your teens and early 20s. You’ll be glad you did. A What is first aid? A seemingly simple example of this happened in my own home recently. Our dog, Latte, started urinating (排尿) indoors, despite years of being well-trained to go outside. Initially, we couldn’t figure out whether this frequent urination was due to aging, misbehaviour, or an accident. As the incidents continued, we eventually decided to use dog diapers (尿布) inside the house. I quickly developed my own perspective on this. I was annoyed by this new routine. I didn’t want a dog that needed diapers, and checking and replacing them several times a day felt burdensome. On top of that, our clever dog found ways to escape from them. Soon I stopped being as gentle as I used to be and roughly pressed him and put a new diaper on him. Then, at Latte’s annual wellness checkup, a mass was found in his bladder (膀胱). The cancer test eventually confirmed our worst fear: Latte had bladder cancer. Suddenly, everything having to do with this matter was different. Of course, he couldn’t control his bladder — he had a large tumor inside. We were now facing a serious condition with limited time left to spend with him. We turned our focus to making him as comfortable as possible. My view on dog diapers also changed. Now, every time I put one on him, it’s with care and love. When he gets rid of them, I smile. Cleaning up after him reminds me that he’s still here, and I’m grateful for whatever time we have left, whether it’s days, weeks, or months. It has struck me that all of my views need to change, or at least a little room for movement. There are always other opinions and conditions to consider. There are always unknowns that we aren’t aware of when forming points of view. So why not be a little more allowing? A little more accepting of people and situations that initially seem to make us feel uncomfortable? 24. Which can best describe the author as a pet owner? A. Critical and demanding. B. Caring but impatient. C. Selfish and irresponsible. D. Concerned but careless. 25. Why did Latte urinate indoors? A. Due to the disease. B. Owing to old age. C. For lack of training. D. Out of bad habits. 26. What did the author think of Latte’s urinating after seeing the test result? A. It was unacceptable. B. It was changeable. C. It was understandable. D. It was avoidable. 27. What is the main idea of the text? A. The making of a great owner. B. The challenges of raising pets. C. The harm of being inflexible. D. The significance of open-mindedness. B 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第三段中的“I was annoyed by this new routine. I didn’t want a dog that needed diapers, and checking and replacing them several times a day felt burdensome. On top of that, our clever dog found ways to escape from them. Soon I stopped being as gentle as I used to be and roughly pressed him and put a new diaper on him. (我对这种新的日常感到烦躁。我不想要一只需要穿尿布的狗,每天数次检查和更换尿布让我觉得负担沉重。更何况,我们那只聪明的狗还总能想方设法挣脱尿布。很快我就不再像以前那样温柔,而是粗暴地按住它,给它换上新尿布。)”可知,作者关心狗狗但缺乏耐心。故选B项。 【25题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The cancer test eventually confirmed our worst fear: Latte had bladder cancer. (癌症检查最终证实了我们最担心的事情:Latte得了膀胱癌。)”及第四段中的“Of course, he couldn’t control his bladder — he had a large tumor inside. (当然,它无法控制膀胱——它体内有一个大肿瘤。)”可知,Latte室内排尿是因为疾病。故选A项。 根据第四段中的“Of course, he couldn’t control his bladder — he had a large tumor inside. (当然,它无法控制膀胱——它体内有一个大肿瘤。)”及第五段中的“Now, every time I put one on him, it’s with care and love. (现在,每次给它穿尿布时,我都充满关爱。)”可推知,看到检查结果后,作者认为Latte的排尿行为是可以理解的。故选C项。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。根据最后一段中的“There are always other opinions and conditions to consider. There are always unknowns that we aren’t aware of when forming points of view. So why not be a little more allowing? A little more accepting of people and situations that initially seem to make us feel uncomfortable? (总会有其他观点和情况需要考虑。在形成观点时,也总有我们未曾意识到的未知因素。那么,为何不更包容一些呢?对那些起初让我们感到不适的人或事,多一些接纳?)”可知,文章从作者对狗狗室内排尿一事的看法转变,最后引出人应该有更开放、包容的心态,要考虑到可能存在的未知情况,不要过于固执己见,重点在于强调心态开放的重要性。故选D项。 C The sun and the sea, both rich and free, are used in a unique project to create vertical sea farms (垂直海洋农场) floating on the ocean that can produce fresh water for drinking and agriculture. Professor Haolan Xu and Dr Gary Owens from UniSA’s Future Industries Institute have developed the vertical floating sea farm which is made up of two rooms: an upper room similar to a glasshouse and a lower water harvest room. Dr Owens says, “Clean water is supplied by an array of solar evaporators (太阳能蒸发器) that can take in the seawater, collect the salt and, under the sun’s rays, free clean water vapor (水蒸气) into the air, which then changes into water and is passed to the plant growth room.” “Other designs have located evaporators inside the growth room, which take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for plant growth. Also, these systems are easy to cause overheating and crop death,” Professor Xu says. “In our design, the vertical evaporators and the growth room decrease the device’s overall footprint. Besides, it is operated mostly by machine and has a low cost, using only solar energy and seawater to produce clean water and grow crops.” Freshwater accounts for just 2.5% of the world’s water and most of this is not accessible because it’s stuck in glaciers, ice caps or is deep underground. The United Nations estimates that by 2050, about 2.4 billion people are likely to experience water shortages. In the same period, the global supply of water for agriculture is expected to decrease by around 19%. However, the researchers have shown that the recycled water produced in this way is pure enough to drink and has a lower salt content than WHO guidelines for drinking water. Dr Owens says their design is only at the proof-of-concept stage, but after it is proved to be a success, their next step is to ramp it up through a set of individual devices to meet larger water supply needs. “Seawater is an obvious solution to the growing global shortages of water, food, and agricultural land,” Dr Owens adds. 28. What do solar evaporators on the vertical sea farm do? A. Trap water vapor from the sea surface. B. Limit the temperature of the growth room. C. Push water to the lower harvest room. D. Remove salt from seawater under the sun. 29. What is an advantage of the new design? A. It can store much more extra solar energy. B It enables a high output of crops. C. It allows for more space for plant growth. D. It can run continuously for long. 30. What does the author intend to do with the figures in Paragraph 4? A. Reveal the lack of underground water. B. Stress the seriousness of water shortage. C. Unfold the details of WHO guidelines. D. Emphasize the wide spread of seawater. 31. What does the underlined phrase “ramp it up” in the last paragraph mean? A. Increase the size of the farm. B. Build a strict water-saving system. C. Reduce the cost of the farm. D. Have more people know the farm. D 29. C 30. B 31. 根据第二段“Dr Owens says, “Clean water is supplied by an array of solar evaporators (太阳能蒸发器) that can take in the seawater, collect the salt and, under the sun’s rays, free clean water vapor (水蒸气) into the air, which then changes into water and is passed to the plant growth room.” (欧文斯博士说:“清洁水由一系列太阳能蒸发器提供,这些蒸发器可以吸收海水,收集盐分,并在阳光照射下将清洁的水蒸气释放到空气中,然后水蒸气变成水,传递到植物生长室。”)”可知,太阳能蒸发器的作用是在阳光下从海水中去除盐分并释放清洁的水蒸气。故选D项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段““Other designs have located evaporators inside the growth room, which take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for plant growth. Also, these systems are easy to cause overheating and crop death,” Professor Xu says. “In our design, the vertical evaporators and the growth room decrease the device’s overall footprint. (其他设计将蒸发器放置在生长室内,占用了本可用于植物生长的宝贵空间。此外,这些系统容易导致过热和作物死亡,”徐教授说。“在我们的设计中,垂直蒸发器和生长室减少了设备的整体占地面积)”可知,新设计的优势在于通过垂直蒸发器和生长室的布局,腾出了更多植物生长的空间。故选C项。 30题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Freshwater accounts for just 2.5% of the world’s water and most of this is not accessible because it’s stuck in glaciers, ice caps or is deep underground. The United Nations estimates that by 2050, about 2.4 billion people are likely to experience water shortages. In the same period, the global supply of water for agriculture is expected to decrease by around 19%. (淡水仅占世界水资源的2.5%,其中大部分无法获取,因为它被困在冰川、冰盖或地下深处。联合国估计,到2050年,大约24亿人可能会经历水资源短缺。在同一时期,全球农业用水供应预计将减少约19%)”可知,作者通过列举数据强调了水资源短缺的严重性。故选B项。 【31题详解】 词义猜测题。根据最后一段“Dr Owens says their design is only at the proof-of-concept stage, but after it is proved to be a success, their next step is to ramp it up through a set of individual devices to meet larger water supply needs. (Owens博士说,他们的设计还处于概念验证阶段,但在证明成功后,他们的下一步是通过一系列单独的装置来ramp it up,以满足更大的供水需求)”可知,设计还出于概念验证阶段,证明成功后会扩大规模,以满足更大的供水需求。由此猜测“ramp it up”的意思是扩大垂直海洋农场的规模。故选A项。 D In a recent study, an orangutan (红毛猩猩) was observed using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, marking a significant discovery in the animal kingdom’s self-healing behaviours. Scientists reported that the orangutan, named Rakus, was seen picking and chewing leaves from a plant commonly used in Southeast Asia to relieve pain and inflammation (炎症). Rakus then applied the plant’s juices to an injury on his cheek using his fingers, before pressing the chewed leaves onto the wound as a makeshift (临时替代物) bandage. This behaviour was documented in a new study published in Scientific Reports. This is the first known instance of a wild animal directly applying an effective medicinal plant to a wound, according to Isabelle Laumer, a biologist at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behaviour. The orangutan’s actions were recorded in 2022 by Ulil Azhari, a field researcher with the Suaq Project in Indonesia. Photographs captured during this observation showed the wound healing completely within a month without complications (并发症). Researchers have been studying orangutans in Indonesia’s Gunung Leuser National Park since 1994, but this was the first time they witnessed such behaviour. Emory University biologist Jacobus de Roode, who was not part of the study, noted that while it’s a single observation, many new behaviours are discovered this way. He suggested that this behaviour is likely a form of self-medication, as the orangutan specifically targeted the wound. Rakus’s ability to self-medicate might have been learned from other orangutans living outside the park, beyond the regular observation of scientists, suggested co-author Caroline Schuppli of Max Planck. Rakus, who was born and lived outside the study area as a youth, likely sustained the injury in a fight with another animal. The use of medicinal plants by animals is not entirely new. Previous research has documented other great apes engaging in similar behaviours. Bornean orangutans have been seen using plant juices to relieve body pains. Additionally, chimpanzees and gorillas have been observed using specific plants to treat digestive issues. This interesting discovery raises questions about the origins of medicinal practices among early humans and their close relatives. 32. What did the recent study find about an orangutan? A. It copied human behaviour. B. It communicated with others. C. It had a fight with a youth. D. It used a plant for self-healing. 33. What does Jacobus de Roode suggest about the significance of the observation? A. It confirms the intelligence of orangutans. B. It indicates potential for further discovery. C. It shows orangutans can treat human diseases. D. It proves orangutans have medical knowledge. 34. What can be inferred about Rakus’s behaviour? A. It was an acquired behaviour. B. It was easy to observe in the wild. C. It was a one-time occurrence. D. It was common among orangutans. 35. What might the discovery contribute to? A. Discovery of new plants as medicine. B. Animal protection laws. C. Origins of human medicinal practices. D. Endangered species list. 【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文,主要介绍了一项关于红毛猩猩使用药用植物自我疗伤的最新研究发现,以及该发现的意义和相关背景信息。 【32题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第一段“In a recent study, an orangutan (红毛猩猩) was observed using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, marking a significant discovery in the animal kingdom’s self - healing behaviours.(在最近的一项研究中,人们观察到一只红毛猩猩使用一种药用植物来治疗伤口,这是动物王国自我愈合行为研究中的一项重大发现)”可知,最近的研究发现红毛猩猩会使用药用植物进行自我疗伤,故选D项。 【33题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Emory University biologist Jacobus de Roode, who was not part of the study, noted that while it’s a single observation, many new behaviours are discovered this way.(埃默里大学的生物学家雅各布斯·德·鲁德没有参与这项研究,他指出,虽然这是一个单一的观察,但许多新的行为都是通过这种方式发现的。)”可知,他认为这一观察虽然只是单个案例,但许多新行为都是通过这种方式发现的,可推理出这一观察有进一步发现的潜力,故选B项。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段“Rakus’s ability to self-medicate might have been learned from other orangutans living outside the park, beyond the regular observation of scientists, suggested co-author Caroline Schuppli of Max Planck(拉库斯自我治疗的能力可能是从生活在公园外、科学家常规观察范围之外的其他红毛猩猩那里学来的,论文共同作者卡罗琳·舒普利来自马克斯·普朗克研究所,她提出了这一观点)”可知,Caroline Schuppli提出Rakus的自我医疗能力可能是从公园外的其他红毛猩猩那里学来的,这表明这种行为可能是后天习得的,故选A项。 【35题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章最后一句“This interesting discovery raises questions about the origins of medicinal practices among early humans and their close relatives.(这一有趣的发现引发了人们对早期人类及其近亲医疗实践起源的思考)”可知,该发现可能有助于研究人类医疗实践的起源,故选C项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Elevator music is, as its name might suggest, a type of music that is often played in commercial elevators in offices, hotels and other corporate structures. The songs played are usually familiar or recognizable tunes. ___36___   Elevator music, more commonly known as Muzak, the name of a wired radio company, came into use in 1922. ___37___ It has been proved that some kinds of elevator music can psychologically make buyers shop longer and browse items more easily.  The main purpose of elevator music is to create a calm, quiet place for passengers travelling between floors. It tends to be most common in high-rise buildings, where passengers have longer rides. You can also hear it in crowded stores or shopping centres. ___38___   ___39___ The simplest way is to remove the singing from an appropriate track and only use the music. The second way is to pay a musician to record either an original song or a cover version of an existing composition that can be used.  Almost all elevator-type music is purchased or streamed directly from companies that specialize in the genre. It’s often possible to find blends and channels designed to bring certain feelings, or that is related to things like the seasons or upcoming holidays. ___40___ A. Modern elevator music is often formed in two ways. B. Companies can also purchase collections that are mainly classics. C. Muzak is still around today, although the company has shifted its focus. D. Earlier that Wednesday afternoon, Eddie, the most popular seventh-grader, had given Lorena his jacket and asked her to keep an eye as he would play basketball in a hurry. Lorena was quite happy to be of help. During her last class, the biology teacher made them cut apart dead frogs. For fear of getting blood on Eddie's jacket, Lorena folded it and placed it on a chair. Then she took the knife and cut the skin quickly. She felt sick opening the frog's belly. When the bell rang Lorena hurried out because the bus she caught for home left ten minutes after school. She raced to board the bus and found a seat. After a few minutes the driver started the engine and drove away when Lorena looked out of the window and saw Eddie. "The jacket!" she screamed. She shot from her seat and ran up to the driver. "You've got to stop! I forgot Eddie's jacket!" "Who's Eddie? " the driver said angrily. "Sit down." All that evening she was upset and blamed her biology teacher for her problem. If he hadn't made them dissect(解剖) frogs, ,she wouldn't have been so absent-minded. The next day Lorena rushed from the bus to the biology room. The jacket was not there! "How can I ever tell Eddie?" she closed her eyes. She spent most of her break and lunch period in the rest room, brushing her hair and worrying. On Friday she stayed home to avoid Eddie. She told her mother she wanted to go shopping to buy her a gift for her birthday, which was the next week. Actually, she wanted to buy a Nike jacket with her life savings at Fashion Fair. Paragraph 1 : Mom drove Lorena to Fashion Fair and left, asking her not to waste money. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2 : Lorena was about to leave when she saw Eddie in his Nike jacket. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragragh 1 Mom drove Lorena to Fashion Fair and left, asking her not to waste money. It was too bad she didn’t have enough money. Paragragh 2 Lorena was about to leave when she saw Eddie in his Nike jacket. With a tight face, Eddie scolded Lorena why she had left his jacket in the biology room. “I thought we could be friends.” he complained. “I can explain.” Lorena begged. “You’re of no help at all.” Eddie rushed off. “What the hell’s going on?” Lorena wondered. First aid is an emergency measure, generally consisting of simple, often life-saving techniques that most people can train to perform with minimal equipment and no previous medical experience. It is not classed as medical treatment and does not replace interventions (干预) from a trained medical professional. Aims of first aid · Preserve life: Saving lives is the main aim of first aid. · Prevent further harm: The person who has experienced the injury must be kept stable, and their condition must not deteriorate before medical services arrive. This may include moving the individual away from harm, applying first aid techniques, keeping them warm and dry, and applying pressure to wounds to stop any bleeding. · Promote recovery: Taking steps to promote recovery may include applying a bandage to a wound. First Aid Certification Get first aid certified. At the American Red Cross, our mission is to help people prepare for and respond to emergencies. To accomplish this goal, we have developed a wide range of training opportunities and certification programmes that empower you to help in the moments that matter. Designed, and taught by experts, Red Cross first aid certification courses are OSHA (职业安全与健康法案) compliant and affordable. With online, in-person or blended learning course formats, you can quickly earn your first aid certification in the way that suits you best. 21. What does first aid typically involve? A. Advanced medical equipment. B Complex medical procedures. C. Simple life-saving techniques. D. Professional medical degrees. 22. What is the primary goal of first aid? A. To replace medical care. B. To save people’s lives. C. To prevent further harm. D. To help with recovery. 23. How does the American Red Cross help with first aid? A. By offering thorough training. B. By providing medical check-up. C. By selling first aid equipment. D. By conducting medical research. B In this age of instant information and social media, where everyone feels the need to share their opinions, it’s easy to quickly form views and hold onto them — even if there’s always more than one side to every situation. C The sun and the sea, both rich and free, are used in a unique project to create vertical sea farms (垂直海洋农场) floating on the ocean that can produce fresh water for drinking and agriculture. Professor Haolan Xu and Dr Gary Owens from UniSA’s Future Industries Institute have developed the vertical floating sea farm which is made up of two rooms: an upper room similar to a glasshouse and a lower water harvest room. Dr Owens says “Clean water is supplied by an array of solar evaporators (太阳能蒸发器) that can take in the seawater, collect the salt and, under the sun’s rays, free clean water vapor (水蒸气) into the air, which then changes into water and is passed to the plant growth room.” “Other designs have located evaporators inside the growth room, which take up valuable space that could otherwise be used for plant growth. B. It enables a high output of crops. D In a recent study, an orangutan (红毛猩猩) was observed using a medicinal plant to treat a wound, marking a significant discovery in the animal kingdom’s self-healing behaviours. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Elevator music is, as its name might suggest, a type of music that is often played in commercial elevators in offices, hotels and other corporate structures. She was relieved the sunlight appeared. If it didn't stop raining it would ruin her day. Her mother had promised to drive her to Fashion Fair if it were sunny. Lorena was eager to go there because she had to replace a Nike jacket. When the bell rang Lorena hurried out because the bus she caught for home left ten minutes after school She raced to board the bus and found a seat. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
