For 21-year-old Wang Xueting and her visually-challenged father, Wang Kequan, running is not just a workout but also a bonding experience.
Since 2020, Wang has accompanied her father on daily running sessions, serving as his eyes and using a tether (拴绳) to help him in charting the path. “We rely on the tether to feel the turns and the distance between us,” she said.
Wang’s 51-year-old father, born with a congenital (先天性的) vision disorder, had suffered from depression for a long time due to his disability. Indeed, running wasn’t easy for him in the beginning. Wang Xueting first bought a secondhand running machine online for her father, but he gave up after a few attempts as he felt that he couldn’t use it due to his lack of physical exercise and sight. Then Wang decided to run with her father, alerting him to the turns and barriers on the road. They have run every day since then in their community, gradually increasing their training intensity and running longer distances. Wang Kequan slowly developed a love for running. Thanks to the daily physical activity, his health improved and his blood pressure dropped. “Every time I run, it’s as if my disability is left behind,” he said.
Running has brought them closer, and Wang Xueting said they talk more about things besides running on their daily training routes, such as her education and favorite subjects. She even led her father on runs at her university campus, where they have greeted her teachers and classmates. “Life throws challenges, but it never lacks hope,” she said.
The inspiring journey of Wang Xueting with her father has drawn significant media coverage and has left a lasting impression on numerous online followers seeing their running images.
4. What role did Wang Xueting play during their daily runs?
A. She merely served as a companion.
B. She acted as her father’s guide using a tether.

D. She was the motivator but didn’t run with her father.
5. What is the main idea of paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. The challenges of adapting to a visual disability.
B. The importance of professional medical treatment.
C. The physical improvements from running.
D. The transformative power of shared physical activity.
6. Which of the following best describes Wang Xueting?
A. Patient and observant. B. Caring and ambitious.
C. Supportive and devoted. D. Understanding and open-minded.
7. What could be the suitable title for the text?
A. Running Routes: Guided by a Tether
B From Darkness to Light: A Family’s Journey
C. Personal Stories: From Depression to Determination
D. A Tether of Love: Running Beyond Sight

Reefs (珊瑚礁) are the lifeblood of ocean ecosystems, offering vital shelter and food to countless underwater species. Regrettably, natural reefs are in a state of rapid decline, and the rich tapestry of marine life is disappearing with them. Fortunately, an innovative project off the coast of Cyprus is underway, testing the effectiveness of artificial reefs made from cement (水泥) to restore ocean life. As reported by AP News, this initiative also employs a collection of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs自主水下航行器) to safeguard these reefs and gather invaluable data.
Artificial reefs, while not a novel concept, can significantly attract marine life and break up waves when properly positioned. This is precisely what makes the multinational EONIOS project so important. EONIOS intends to install a 3D-printed cement reef deep within the Ayia Napa Marina, accompanied by a group of AUVs used to its monitoring and protection.
The project is especially crucial for Cyprus, where the lack of marine life has become an increasingly pressing issue. Zakarias Siokouros, CEO of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, told AP, “Reefs act as a magnet, drawing in everything from aquatic plants to large fish. In waters off Cyprus, where food for fish is insufficient, we aim to create an ideal environment to attract more marine life.”
But one might wonder: Why AUVs? These vehicles, according to AP, can remain underwater for up to a month, providing continuous data to scientists and authorities responsible for reef protection. The AUVs, made by the French company Arkeocean, can carry up to 11 pounds of sensors and other equipment. Battery-powered and nearly undetectable, they use water currents to extend battery life.
The AUVs will be connected to rechargeable docking stations built into the reef, where they will closely monitor water conditions and other environmental changes. They will also alert scientists to any potential threats to the reef, such as unauthorized boating or illegal fishing. Additionally, they can detect earthquakes for offshore energy exploration and locate sites for offshore wind and solar farms.
The restoration of the waters around Cyprus is set to bring benefits, not only to the local fishing industry but also to the ocean. This technological advancement represents a significant step forward in global ocean conservation efforts.
8. What is the primary purpose of the project described?
A. To develop new underwater construction materials.
B. To restore marine ecosystems through artificial reefs.
C. To test whether cement can replace natural coral structures.
D. To promote offshore energy exploration in Cyprus.
9. What can be inferred about AUVs from paragraph 4?
A. They nearly rely on solar power to extend battery time.
B. They mainly function to collect data for scientific research.
C. They are designed to work without being easily detected.
D They require frequent human involvement underwater.
10. Why are AUVs considered important for the project?
A. They replace human divers in dangerous tasks.
B. They speed up the 3D-printing process of artificial reefs.
C. They provide ongoing monitoring and threat detection.
D. They directly enhance fish reproduction in waters.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the technology used in the project?
A. Skeptical. B. Unconcerned. C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
D
Worries regarding microplastics (微塑料) have been around for a while. Every year, the world generates 400 million tons of plastic and a considerable amount of it breaks down into tiny pieces that now litter our planet.
A research article from 2019 in Environmental Science & Technology estimated that humans take in up to 100,000 bits of plastic each day. Beyond the mere existence of plastic within our bodies, the chemical components of plastic could potentially impact the tissue s and organs of various species, as indicated by a 2021 study in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
Over the past two years, however, many innovative solutions have emerged to address the problem, ranging from cleaning beaches to shooting bubbles up from river bottoms. This wide range of measures could help in specific pollution hot spots, says Zoie Diana, a Duke doctoral candidate, who worked on the inventory and added 40 new inventions this year. “But if you have a technology that would capture microplastics at the industrial wastewater level, before they enter our waterways, that would be ideal,” Diana says.
That’s where Alain Marty, chief scientist at the biochemistry start-up Carbios, steps in. In a 2020 Nature article, Marty and colleagues describe how they engineered an enzyme (酶) to break down plastic quickly and efficiently. Industries could employ the enzyme as part of their production procedures, so that nearly all of their material could be reused to create products. “If waste has a value, then it becomes a product,” he says. “And once it’s a product, it will be collected and no longer pollute our oceans and our environment.”
“While Marty’s finding marks a significant step forward, preventing microplastics through decreased plastic consumption remains equally crucial,” says Diana. “We really want to turn off the tap.”
12. What can we learn from paragraph 2?
A. Humans consume exactly 100,000 bits of plastic each day.
B. There is lots of plastic hidden in humans’ tissues and organs.
C. Chemicals in plastic may do harm to human organs.
D. The 2019 study mainly discussed plastic’s chemical effects.
13. What does the underlined word “That” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Creative measures beneficial in reducing microplastics.
B. Recent inventions targeting specific pollution hot spots.
C. A new invention trapping microplastics at industrial wastewater level.
D. A technology addressing the problem of microplastics in waterways.
14. How does the enzyme contribute to solving the problem?
A. It might promote the reuse of materials for product creation.
B. It might efficiently transform plastic into microplastics.
C. It might reduce the cost of industrial plastic production.
D. It might become a product and no longer cause pollution.
15. What does “We really want to turn off the tap” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Protecting water is as important as reducing microplastics.
B. Cutting plastic production is a fundamental solution.
C. Reducing plastic use is urgently required.
D. Preventing water pollution is a top priority.

The exhibition hall was filled with bright lights. All the finalists of the “Traditional Paper-cutting Competition” were proudly showing their works. I,16-year-old Mia, placed my Butterfly Garden on the display table. My hands were shaking. I used Grandma’s favorite scissors (剪刀) to cut this red paper. There were many carefully-made butterflies on it. Each one showed how many hours I spent practicing.
I could hear Grandma’s voice in my head. “Paper-cutting isn’t just about making pretty shapes,” she often said with a smile. “It’s like writing a story with scissors. Every cut tells a part of our family, our life, and our love for this art.” She would sit beside me for hours, showing me how to fold the paper just right and guiding my hand as I made each cut. “Look, Mia,” she’d say, “this curve (曲线) is like a river in our village, and these tiny holes are the stars we see at night.” I listened carefully, feeling the magic of our family’s stories coming to life on the paper.
When the judges walked around to check all the works, I was really nervous. I saw them stop at some other pieces. My throat went dry, and I started biting my lip anxiously. But I still thought my Butterfly Garden was the best. The big butterfly in the middle was for Grandma, who taught me everything. The smaller ones around it were like the memories we shared.
When the host walked onto the stage to say who won, my heart was beating so fast. I felt like it could jump out of my chest. I was thinking about standing on the stage, getting the medal. But then I heard the host say, “The winner of the competition is... Lucy with her Ballet Dream!” For a moment, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. My Butterfly Garden looked so simple and not special at all compared to her shiny, high-tech paper-cut. I looked at Grandma in the crowd. She was smiling, her eyes bright and proud, as if she wanted to tell me something important.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I stood there frozen as Lucy was handed the golden medal.

D. They require frequent human involvement underwater.
10. Why are AUVs considered important for the project?
A. They replace human divers in dangerous tasks.
B. They speed up the 3D-printing process of artificial reefs.
C. They provide ongoing monitoring and threat detection.
D They directly enhance fish reproduction in waters.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward the technology used in the project?
A. Skeptical. B. Unconcerned. C. Indifferent. D. Optimistic.
B 9. C 10. C 11.

D. Preventing water pollution is a top priority.

escape from... 故填from。
故填an。
“among ____ the British Museum has the largest collection”是非限制性定语从句,先行词是47 global museums,指物,关系词代替先行词在从句中作介词among的宾语,用关系代词which引导。故填which。
故填are housed。
inspire sb. to do sth. 故填to reflect。

Dear fellow students,
As the chairman of the Student Union, I’ve noticed that some students are overusing AI software to finish their homework during holidays.
AI software can help us quickly get information, which is convenient. However, if we rely on it too much, we may lose the ability to think independently, which is harmful to our study. Here are some suggestions. We should use AI software as a tool to assist us rather than a substitute for our own efforts. When we encounter problems that we can’t solve, we can turn to it for help, but we must make sure we understand the solutions.
Let’s use AI software wisely!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I stood there frozen as Lucy was handed the golden medal. My heart sank, but Lucy came up to me, her eyes shining with admiration. “Mia, your Butterfly Garden is amazing,” she said sincerely. “It tells such a beautiful story. I could feel the love you put into it. Don’t be disappointed. You’re a talented artist.” Her words warmed my heart and gave me a glimmer of confidence.
Suddenly, a warm hand touched my shoulder. It was Grandma. She looked at me with a gentle smile and said, “Mia, remember what I always told you? Paper-cutting is about sharing our stories and love. You did that perfectly. Don’t let a medal define your worth. Keep on cutting, and your stories will touch more hearts.” I was deeply moved by her words and decided to keep practicing and sharing our family’s stories through paper-cutting.
