Do kids in your classroom even know when Einstein lived? You may be wondering: why is it important to teach kids stories about modern-day scientists? First, stories of scientists can encourage kids. Chris Hadfield is a Canadian who went to space, and heˈs a real guitar-playing person. He makes singing videos on the website. His story can make kids think scientists are also common people. Hearing scientistsˈ stories makes kids think that they can do that too. But not only that, the stories of famous scientists can encourage kids to explore and never give up. Bill Nye was always refused when trying to be an astronaut. But up to now, he has made a lot of successes in his role as a popular science educator and engineer. Besides, itˈs no secret that scientific discoveries require trying, and trying again. Another way some scientists can encourage kids is through their diversity. Neil deGrasse Tyson, for example, is an African-American, which is not common in his field. Such stories can make kids think anyone can be a scientist. Itˈs important to know that scientists donˈt need to be "gifted" or "good" at school. Often we consider a scientist as being an extremely smart kid at school, which doesnˈt have to be true. They just need to have a great interest in science. Telling students stories of scientists can encourage them to show interest in science. As long as they are interested, they are likely to become a scientist in the future. Modern scientists teach kids that knowledge builds upon the foundation others have laid. This is important— no one can do it alone. Scientistsˈ stories can encourage todayˈs young scientists to keep trying. Theyˈll be encouraged not to give up on the dream of exploring and making discoveries. Even if they havenˈt made important discoveries, their research may help the following scientists. 24.What can Chris Hadfieldˈs story tell students? A. Scientists are interested in different things. B. Students should have a hobby of their own. C. Scientists can be ordinary like people around us. D. Students should consider scientists as their models. 25.Which of the following will the author agree with? A. Scientists are not necessarily very smart at school. B. Not all scientists really show interest in science. C. Scientists are usually good at their schooling. D. African-Americans are more likely to become scientists. 26.What can be learned according to the last paragraph? A. Scientists should help each other. B. A scientist should never give up trying. C. Making discoveries is necessary for scientists. D. New scientific discoveries may be based on othersˈ findings. 27.What is the text mainly about? A. Why scientists are important to us. B. Why students love stories of scientists. C. Why scientists can make great discoveries. D. Why students should be taught stories about scientists. C     World-famous scientist Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76. He was often called the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Albert Einstein. But his amazing career actually started as a young man who struggled to get around to doing his homework at Oxford University where he studied physics. He then went on to Cambridge to research cosmology, the study of the origin of universe.     When he was 21, Hawking's life hit a big hurdle. He was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. The disease causes the brain to stop sending messages to a person's muscles. At the time, doctors said he would only live for around 2 years, but he proved them very, very wrong.     And with the help of a special wheelchair and speech computer, Hawking spent much of his time researching the beginning of the universe and black holes. His most famous discovery was probably when he demonstrated that black holes emit some radiation, which has since become known as Hawking Radiation. He also spent a lot of time thinking about what existed before the big bang.     Hawking wrote books that explained his big ideas in ways that could be understood by the average person. In 1988 he published A Brief History of Time. It became really popular and sold more than 10 million copies. However, he wasn't just known for his books. He also had a lot of fun becoming a regular on TV screens around the world. He even had a big Hollywood film made about his life.     Throughout his life Stephen Hawking inspired people to look beyond our planet and expand our knowledge of the universe. His family says that he'll be greatly missed and the legacy of his amazing ideas will live on. 28.Why does the author mention Albert Einstein in Paragraph 1? A. To tell us Hawking was a great physicist. B. To compare the two famous people. C. To show he was Hawking's teacher. D. To identify a special period further. 29.How did Hawking prove the doctor's wrong? A. He did many experiments. B. He made some comparisons. C. He tried to send signals to his muscles. D. He lived for long like other common people. 30.What does Hawking's family think of him? A. He'll be forgotten soon. B. His idea of the universe is valuable. C. He won't be understood completely. D. He won't be found by others any more. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Write Any High School Essay Writing an essay is an important basic skill that you will need to succeed in high school, college, and beyond.
