Here are four venues (场所) with classes year-round to help release your inner chef. Mille-Feuille Students come from all over to study and taste the two specialties — croissant and macaron — in the back of chef Olivier Dessyn’s popular Greenwich Village Bakery. Classes accommodate no more than eight students and run 1-1.5 hours, and everyone gets to bring home their finished baked goods and dough to practice more at home. Don’t-miss class: Both! Abigail’s Kitchen Chef Abigail Hitchcock is a renowned culinary authority who has appeared on shows like Chopped. Most lessons are limited to 10 students and are 3 hours long, though Shop-and-Cook classes, where students visit some of New York’s best international markets, are 5 hours. Don’t-miss class: Fresh Pasta is Hitchcock’s most popular class, featuring homemade pasta and seasonal sauces. Home Cooking New York For the past two decades, aspiring cooks have sought out Jennifer Clair’s classes. Clair, a professional cook and former magazine food editor, offers classes (2.5 hours) in two modern, fully stocked kitchen lofts downtown. While kids aged 12-15 can attend with an adult, there are kids-only weekend and holiday classes as well. Don’t-miss class: Six Basic Cooking Techniques, where you’ ll learn knife skills, meat cookery and vegetable roasting. Taste Buds Kitchen Taste Buds is the leading cooking school for kids by day, but at night it transforms into a space for grown-ups to cook up for fun. Kids’ popular class — Junior Chef — happens after school and on weekends. Most are 2 hours, but look for more in-depth, longer classes for holiday camps. Don’t-miss class: Sushi & Dumplings. 21. D. Both are equipped with traditional kitchens. 23. In which section of a magazine can the text probably be found? A. Entertainment. B. Cuisine. C. Travel. D. Sports. B As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children. Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification. “Within 10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification. Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers rather than chemicals. In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.” By September 2016, more than 130,000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant 1 million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco. 24. What fired Sarah Toumi’s passion to help others? A. Her childhood living with her family in France. B. Her experience in fighting against desertification. C. Her holiday trips to her father’s birthplace in Tunisia. D. Her strong desire to become a leader to better the world. 25. What is the main cause of desertification in Tunisia? A. The severe shortage of water. B. The rising amount of rainfall. C. The breakdown of rich farmers. D. The change of farming practices. 26. How did Sarah Toumi contribute to addressing desertification? A. By encouraging the farmers to plant conventional crops. B. By spreading the application of natural products and chemical fertilizers. C. By promoting sustainable farming practices and initiating tree-planting program. D. By relocating the young from areas with no access to water to urban centers. 27. Which of the following can be the best title to the text? A. Protect the Plants in Africa B. Holding Back the Sahara C. Extending the Program in Tunisia D. Fighting Poverty in North Africa C There are many common therapies (疗法) for depression, including medical treatment, psychotherapy and talk therapy. Having a range of treatment choices is a good idea because no single treatment works equally well for each of millions of sufferers. Choosing the most suitable treatment is important to them. Now researchers say a new therapy proven to relieve depression should be added to the established treatments. It’s called nature therapy. “Interacting with nature can have positive effects on those with depression,” says Ethan Kross, PhD, an expert who has studied the nature-depression link. A little exposure to nature helps all of us get our energy back, and it may have special benefit for those who are depressed. “It seems that, from our work, the restorative effect of nature seems to be stronger for individuals with depression,” says Marc Berman, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Chicago. That might be because they feel mentally exhausted, and being in nature reenergizes them, However, Dr. Berman has a strong warning. “We’re not arguing that interacting with nature should replace clinically proven treatments for depression,” he says, “Nor should those with clinical depression try to treat themselves”. However, Berman and others say, interactions with nature could serve as a very effective supplementary treatment. Compared to adults with depression walking for 50 minutes in an urban setting, those who took a 50-minute walk in a natural setting were less depressed and had better memory skills. Why does nature hold this special effect? Berman says, “In a natural environment, we can choose to think or not, and this choice is believed to help us rest our brains. You can then pay attention later, when you need to.” He adds, “It gives people more ability to concentrate, which is a big problem for those with depression.” Nature provides an effective setting for resting our brains, unlike urban setting. Even in the most peaceful urban environment, you have to pay attention to such things as traffic and stoplights. 28. What can we learn about the common depression therapies? A. They pay no attention to interactions. B. They should be replaced by nature therapy. C. They mainly depend on natural environment. D. They need to be tailored to different patients. 29. How does nature benefit patients with depression? A. By replacing clinic treatment. B. By making them feel energetic. C. By reminding them to rest in time. D. By covering up their mental problems. 30. What does the underlined word ”supplementary“ in paragraph 3 mean? A. Essential. B. Additional. C. Controversial. D. Fundamental. 31. What is the text mainly about? A. An urban setting of restoring energy. B. An addiction to clinical therapy for depression. C. The positive role of nature in treating depression. D. The advantage of using multiple ways to treat diseases. D Deepfakes have become a significant topic in recent times. A deepfake refers to a realistic fake image, video, or audio clip crafted by artificial intelligence, specifically through deep learning techniques. The term itself combines “deep learning” and “fake”. In 2023, we saw a prime example when AI-created images of Pope Francis in a white puffer jacket went viral. Many online were deceived into believing they were genuine photos. While deepfakes do have some practical applications, like in the film industry. For instance, when making a sequel to an old movie where actors have aged, filmmakers can utilize deepfake technology to make the actors appear as they did in the original. However, deepfakes also pose numerous problems. Many actors worry that their images could be used without agreement to create new movies. Moreover, deepfakes are major contributors to the spread of false information. In 2024, fraudsters made a deepfake of President Joe Biden’s voice, urging people not to vote in New Hampshire’s presidential primary elections. Some who received calls with this fake voice were actually convinced to skip voting. There was also a case where a deepfake ad featuring Selena Gomez promoting cookware was made without her knowledge. The creation of altered media isn’t new, but deepfakes are different. Firstly, instead of just modifying existing media, deepfakes, can be easily generated from scratch, Secondly, with the power of AI, even non-experts can effortlessly make such fake images, and audio. This means anyone can create deepfakes of others, not just public figures. Ordinary people can also fall victim, as deepfakes can be used to bully or scam them. Despite how compelling these Al-generated fakes can be, there are ways to spot them. For example, carefully observing the reflections in the eyes might be one way to identify a deepfake. In conclusion, while deepfakes have their uses in certain fields, their potential for misuse and causing harm makes it crucial for us to be aware of them and find ways to detect them. 32. In which industry can deepfakes have practical uses? A. Movie. B. Agriculture. C. AI technology. D. Mining. 33. Why does the author mention the case of Selena Gomez in paragraph 3? A. To show that deepfakes are popular among celebrities. B. To illustrate that ordinary people can also create deepfakes. C. To emphasize that deepfakes are mainly used in the entertainment industry. D. To prove that deepfakes can be used to promote products without permission. 34. What can we infer about the ability to create deepfakes? A. Only professional AI experts can create them. B. It requires a lot of complex equipment to create them. C. Even ordinary people can create deepfakes easily with AI. D It’s impossible for anyone to create them without permission. 35. What’s the author’s attitude towards deepfakes? A. Approving. B. Objective. C. Casual. D. Unconcerned. 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Preparing for exams? One day, while she was busy picking beans in the backyard, she came across a skunk no more than a meter away. The skunk’s embarrassment was evident as he had undoubtedly been rummaging (乱翻) through the garbage. He still had a marmalade jar stuck on his nose. Mom took pity on him. Instead of worrying the creature would spray something smelly all over her and the beans, she smiled compassionately at the little thing and extended a helping hand. Kneeling on the ground, she inched across the grass, reached out, and twisted the jar—very carefully. The jar slipped off. The skunk nodded a thank-you before slipping away into the woods at the back of the garden. Obviously, there was no spraying incident, thanks to my remarkable mother. She repeated this tale numerous times, always calling the skunk Marmalade. However, that was not the end of the story. Three summers later, when I was about twelve, another encounter occurred. It was a rainy morning, and both my mother and father had gone to work. My friend Rob came over to play, and we decided to run the electric train in my room. Suddenly, a scratching sound emerged from the attic (阁楼). Rob assumed that it might be some kind of animal. Curiosity got the better of us, and we ventured towards the source of the sound. I cautiously opened the attic door in the hall. The noise ceased abruptly. I climbed up the stairs, Rob following my lead. There behind the toy box near the chimney stood the animal—black with a distinct white stripe down his back. Was he scared and trembling? I believe so, at least that’s what I remember. Instinctively, I retreated, fearing the potential spray or bites from the creature. “Hey, Rob,” I whispered urgently, “It’s a skunk. Let’s go to the kitchen and figure out a way to get him out of here.” 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: In the cupboard, several paper cups and a jar of marmalade caught our sight. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Rob and I followed the skunk as he ate his way down the stairs. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 辽宁省名校联盟2025年高二6月份联合考试 英语 本试卷满分150分, 考试时间120分钟。 6. I reached for the jar, remembering my mother’s encounter with the skunk years ago. Could it be that this was indeed Marmalade, returning to our home in search of a familiar treat? Hurriedly, I dumped a teaspoon of marmalade into each paper cup, hoping to lure the skunk out of the attic. Hearts pounding in anticipation, we set one cup on the back porch, one just inside the back door, and one every few feet all the way up to the attic. The skunk seemed intrigued, slowly creeping towards the first cup. His nose twitched, and then he began to lick the sweet treat. Paragraph 2: Rob and I followed the skunk as he ate his way down the stairs. He seemed to have grown accustomed to our presence, no longer trembling, and even appeared to enjoy the treat. As he finished gobbling the last bit of the marmalade, he turned and looked at us, those big brown eyes seemingly showing his gratitude. Without another scratch or sign of aggression, he turned and gracefully made his way out of the house, disappearing into the rainy morning. We stood there, amazed and in complete awe of the remarkable encounter. Later, when I shared the story with my mother, she smiled and nodded, saying, “Yes, that’s Marmalade. The center is a north cornwall in the southwest of england. The center is open all year around, but I only work here during the summer, and summer is the busiest time, so they need extra activity leaders. Then activity centres are a great idea for Young people. Most of the people who come to the center live in towns and cities, so it's a chance to enjoy some fresh air. Our center is near the sea, so we spend most time on water activities like surfing and sAiling. We also do rock climbing and mountain biking on the mountain slopes. I think that the most important thing about the activity centers is the social side. Young people today spend so much time on computers or watching T. V that they don't talk to each other much in most of our activities, they have to work in teams. So it's a good opportunity for them to learn about working and communicating with other people and to make new friends too. In the evenings, we get together to singing songs and play indoor games. On the last afternoon, we always have team games. Every group wants to be first, so they really try hard, and it's a lot of fun. I ve been an activity leader for three years now, but this will be my last time. I am finishing university next year and getting a full time job. It's sad to think that this is my last year here, but i've really enjoyed IT. Hi, my name's jez. I work at an activity center for Young people as an activity leader.
