American Bison 改编自national geography kids Bison are the iconic image of the Great Plains and the Old West. They are numbers, shaggy beasts(野兽)and the heaviest land animals in North America. Despite their hefty size, bison are quick on their feet. When the need arises they can run at speeds up to 35 miles an hour. Their curved, sharp horns can grow to be 2 feet long. Females (cows) and adult males (bulls) generally live in small, separate bands and come together in very large herds during the summer breeding(繁殖) season. Males wage battles for mating rights, but such contests rarely(罕见的) turn dangerous. Females give birth to one calf after a nine-month pregnancy(怀孕). Bison once covered the Great Plains and much of North America, and were critically important to Plains Indian societies. During the 19th century, people killed some 50 million bison for food, sport, and to deprive(驱逐) Native Americans of their most important natural asset(资产). The once huge herds were reduced to only a few hundred animals. Today, bison numbers have increased, and about 200,000 bison live on preserves(保留地) and ranches(牧场) where they are raised for their meat. 生词表 image/ˈɪ.mɪdʒ/ n.图像 huge/hjuːdʒ/ adj.巨大的 shaggy/ˈʃæɡ.i/ adj.蓬松的 despite/dɪˈspaɪt/ prep.尽管 speed/spiːd/ n.速度 curve/kɜːv/ n.曲线 sharp /ʃɑːp/ adj.锐利的 horn/hɔːn/ n.角 separate /ˈsep.rət/ adj.分离的 band/bænd/ n.乐队 herd/hɜːd/ n.群 battle/ˈbætl/ n.战斗 contest/kənˈtest/ n.竞赛 rare/reə(r)/ adj.罕见的 give birth to/ bɜːθ / 生育 cover/ˈkʌv.ər/ v.覆盖 plain/pleɪn/ n.平原 critical/ˈkrɪt.ɪ.kəl/ adj.关键的 society/səˈsaɪ.ə.ti/ n.社会 century/ˈsen.tʃər.i/ n.世纪 million/ˈmɪl.jən/ n.百万 reduce /rɪˈduːs/ v.减少 一、词义匹配题(将单词与英文释义连线) Huge A. a group of animals living together Shaggy B. to make something smaller in size or number Despite C. having long, thick, and untidy hair Speed D. a curved, pointed part on an animal's head Horn E. very large in size Herd F. the rate at which something moves Reduce G. in spite of; not affected by something Critical H. happening very seldom; not common Rare I. extremely important; essential Give birth to J. to produce a baby animal or human 二、选词填空题(用单词正确形式填空) 1.despite 2.sharp 3.separate 4.cover 5.century 1.The bison's ______ horns can grow up to 2 feet long. 2.______ their heavy bodies, bison can run at 35 miles per hour. 3.Female and male bison live in ______ bands before the breeding season. 4.In the 19th ______, millions of bison were killed for food. 5.The Great Plains once ______ much of North America. _______________________________________________________________________ 4、 选择正确的单词填空 1.shaggy, 2.despite, 3.speed, 4.separate, 5.herd, 6.reduce, 7. critical, 8.plain Bison are ______ beasts with ______ fur, living on the Great ______. ______ their size, they can reach high ______ when running.
