Dear fellow students,
As a volunteer, I’m writing to call on all of us to pay more attention to the environmental protection of our campus.
Lately, I’ve seen so many random behaviors that are harmful to environmental preservation, such as littering, wasting food in large amounts in the canteen, leaving the tap running and keeping the appliances on without unplugging. Given the fact that it’s essential for every individual to take an active role in creating a greener world, we should always keep in the mind the more conscious we are of environmental protection, the more likely we are to build a sustainable society in the near future. In our daily life, we are supposed to cultivate a good habit of switching off the lights when no one’s left in the classroom, turning off the tap right after use, clearning our plates and leaving no trash wherever we stay.
At last, I’d love to appeal to everybody to take an immediate action to conserve our environemnt and ensure ourselves a clearner and beautiful campus.

Papa, as a son of a dirt-poor farmer, left school early and went to work in a factory, for education was for the rich then. So, the world became his school. With great interest, he read everything he could lay his hands on, listened to the town elders and learned about the world beyond his tiny hometown. “There’s so much to learn,” he’d say. “Though we’re born stupid, only the stupid remain that way.” He was determined that none of his children would be denied (拒绝) an education.
Thus, Papa insisted that we learn at least one new thing each day. Though, as children, we thought this was crazy, it would never have occurred to us to deny Papa a request. And dinner time seemed perfect for sharing what we had learned. We would talk about the news of the day; no matter how insignificant, it was never taken lightly. Papa would listen carefully and was ready with some comment, always to the point.
Then came the moment — the time to share the day’s new learning.
Papa, at the head of the table, would push back his chair and pour a glass of red wine, ready to listen.
“Felice,” he’d say, “tell me what you learned today.”
“I learned that the population of Nepal is...”
Silence.
Papa was thinking about what was said, as if the salvation (拯救) of the world would depend upon it. “The population of Nepal. Hmm. Well...” he’d say. “Get the map; let’s see where Nepal is.” And the whole family went on a search for Nepal.
This same experience was repeated until each family member had a turn. Dinner ended only after we had a clear understanding of at least half a dozen such facts.
As children, we thought very little about these educational wonders. Our family, however, was growing together, sharing experiences and participating in one another’s education. And by looking at us, listening to us, respecting our input, affirming (肯定) our value, giving us a sense of dignity(尊严), Papa was unquestionably our most influential teacher.
Later during my training as a future teacher,I studied with some of the most famous educators. They were imparting (传授) what Papa had known all along-the value of continual learning. His technique has served me well all my life. Not a single day has been wasted, though I can never tell when knowing the population of Nepal might prove useful.

Escape to a New Life — Everyone's Dream?
A TV series in Wales has become a heated issue by becoming the number one choice for teenagers to watch. The main character is a young farmer and the series is about country life, making the popularity of the series all the more surprising. The series is calm and relaxing and absolutely opposite to city life. It describers the Welsh countryside as a beautiful and peaceful place and its people as very caring and happy.
The series's director believes that this is what young people want today. She says the success of the series is because teenagers want a happier and healthier life away from the pressures of deadlines and exams. She figures this series offers a form of escape from their fast and stressful lives.
Despite this, many parents and teachers are worried about the effect it is having on young people. Parents report that their children are just watching this series and neglecting everything else, using Escape to a New Life as an excuse for not completing homework, or refusing to revise for exams, citing a need for a happier and less stressful life.
One father, Paul McGregor, said his daughter Charlotte had changed a lot. He said, “She used to be in the school athletics team and love the javelin(标枪), but now she only wants to watch the TV series and has been dropped from the team. She no longer completes her homework, saying it doesn't matter as she just wants to ‘escape to a new life’. ”
Paediatrician (儿科医生) , Dr. Elisa Carhart who specialises in child mental health, says that TV can influence young people's decisions in life, but believes that if a young person reacts as strongly as Charlotte, it's likely that there are other reasons for the change in his or her behaviour.
56. What is the TV series Escape to a New Life mainly about?
A. How people escape from city life. B. How a Welsh farmer lives his life.
C. How teenagers balance work with life. D. How the young live a relaxing life.
57. Why do young people watch Escape to a New Life and neglect everything else according to parents?
A. They just find a way of not doing routine (常规的) work.
B. They need to escape from their stressful lives.
C. They only love watching TV series.
D. They want a happier and healthier life.
58. What is probably Paul McGregor's attitude towards the TV series?
A. Unfavorable. B. Supportive. C. Unclear. D. Forgiving.
59. What can we learn from Dr. Elisa Carhart's words?
A. One should not jump in with both feet.
B. One man's meat is another man's poison.
C. We'd better be a rainbow in somebody else's cloud.
D. We should not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
60. What is the purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explore the artistic techniques used in filming the Welsh countryside.
B. To argue that country life is inherently(内在地) healthier than city life.
C. To examine how a TV series reflects teenagers’ desire for escape and its consequences.
D. To blame parents for failing to manage their children’s screen time.

五、阅读表达(每题2分,共10分):
I was working one night when a couple came in. They picked a quiet corner and sat down without much energy. And I thought both of them were in need of a shower and a change of clean clothes.
I served them food and then focused on my own things, but I was still concerned about them. They looked really sad. The woman explained in the end. They were worried about their little boy who was sick. They had been in the hospital for many days and the nurses asked them to rest for a while.
I felt terribly sorry for them. I still remembered exactly what happened to my little daughter one year before. I understood their struggles and pains more than others. The nurses had done the same thing to me. And I had been forced to be away for a few hours.
I knew there was no way to reduce their anxiety, but I could help them a little. So I told them that the meal was free of charge that night and provided them with delicious desserts they hadn’t ordered before. I wished them luck before they left. To my surprise, a few minutes later, the young woman came back. She told me that she and her husband were really grateful for my kindness. Then she handed me a few flowers.
A few years passed. One day I was approached by a woman and she said, “You probably don’t remember me!” Beside her was a little boy who was playing on the street.
