高一英语月考试卷 第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。 A Some people have the feeling that nothing can be done about their poor reading ability(能力). They feel hopeless about it. Can you learn to read better, or must you agree that nothing can be done about it? To be sure, people are different. You cannot expect to do everything as well as certain other people do. If all the students in a class tried out for basketball, some would be very good players; others would be very poor; and many would be in between. But even the very poor players can become much better players if they are guided in the right way, and with plenty of practice. It is the same with reading. Some seem to enjoy reading and to read well without any special help. Others find reading a slow and tiring job. In between, there are all degrees of reading ability. Many experiments have shown that just about every poor reader can improve his reading ability. In these experiments, the poor readers were given tests of reading ability. After some of the causes of their poor reading were discovered, they were given special instruction and practice in reading. After a few months, another test of the same kind was given. In nearly all cases, these people had raised their reading scores. 1. With the example of basketball players, the author shows __________. A. why certain people are poor readers B. that there are differences in people’s abilities C. why some people are good basketball players D. that good basketball players can be good readers 2. To improve their reading ability, people should __________. A. work long and hard B. take different forms of tests C. have special help and practice D. try different reading materials 3. The experiments mentioned in the text show that __________. A. good readers seem to enjoy reading B. almost all poor readers can make progress C. causes of poor reading are difficult to find out D. tests help people improve their reading ability B My friend, Emma Daniels, spent the summer of 1974 traveling in Israel. During her month-long stay in Jerusalem she often went to a café called Chocolate Soup. It was run by two men, one of whom—Alex—used to live in Montreal. One morning when Emma went in for coffee, while chatting with her new friend Alex, she mentioned that she had just finished the book she was reading and had nothing else to read. Alex said he had a wonderful book she might like, and that he’d be happy to lend it to her. As he lived just above the café, he quickly ran up to get it. The book he handed to Emma just minutes later was Markings, a book by a former Secretary—General of the United Nations (UN). Emma had never read it, nor had she ever bought a copy. But , when she opened it up, she was floored to see her own name and address inside the cover in her own handwriting (笔迹). It turned out that the summer before, at a concert back in Montreal, Emma had met a Californian who was in town visiting friends. They decided to exchange (交换) addresses, but neither of them had any paper. The man opened up a book he was carrying in his backpack (背包) and asked Emma to write her name and address inside. When he returned to California, he left the book behind in Montreal, and his friend Alex kept it. When Alex later moved to Jerusalem, he took the book along. 4. Alex lent Emma the book, Markings, __________. A. to show his friendliness to her B. to show his interest in reading C. to tell her about the importance of the UN D. to let her write her name and address inside 5. How did Emma feel the moment she opened the book? A. Pleased. B. Satisfied. C. Worried. D. Surprised. 6. We can learn from the text that the Californian __________. A. met Emma at a concert B. invited Emma to a concert C. introduced Emma to his friend D. left Emma his backpack 7. Who was supposed to be the first owner of the book? A. An official (官员) of the UN. B. A coffee shop owner. C. A friend of the author’s. D. Alex’s friend from California. C When asked to point out one or two things that are most important to themselves, many put friends ahead of homes, jobs, cloth and cars. A true friendship carries a long history of experience that determines who we are and keeps us connected. It is a treasure we should protect. Unfortunately, the better friends you are, the more probably you’ll have disagreements. And the result can be what you don’t want — an end to the relationship. The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended (修复). First, don’t let your pride get in your way. Most of us can forgive (原谅) each other when differences are brought out in the open. Second, apologize when you’re wrong — even if you’ve been wronged. Over the course of a friendship, even the best people make mistakes. Sometimes, it may be best if the wronged person takes the lead and apologizes. When you apologize, give your friend a chance to admit (承认) that he has been wrong. Third, see things from your friend’s point of view(观点).And finally, accept that friendships change as our needs and lifestyles (生活方式) change. Making friends can sometimes seem easy. The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that have an effect on all relationships. My suggestion: Consider friendship an honor and a gift, and worth the effort to treasure and nurture (培养). 8. What would be the best title for the text? A. Easy Ways to Make Friends B. Ups and Downs in Friendship C. How to Mend a Troubled Friendship D. How to Take the Lead in Making Friends 9. The “wronged person” underlined in the text refers to a person __________. A. who has been mistaken for another B. who has been blamed unfairly (不公平地) C. who has treated (对待) friends badly D. who has admitted his mistakes 10. According to the text a friendship can last long only if __________. A. we have much in common B. we know our friends’ mistakes C. we treat our disagreements wisely D. we have known one another for long 11. What should we do if we follow the author’s second suggestion? A. Stick to (坚持) our own points of view. B. Avoid making mistakes. C. Make an apology first. D. Change our lifestyles. D Something in chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers. Their study found that the obromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present. The Imperial College London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful (有害的) it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes. Ten healthy volunteers (志愿者) were given the obromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicines are stopping coughs. The team found that, when the volunteers were given the obromine, the capsaicin need to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levers of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo. The researchers said that the obromine worked by keeping down a verve activity (神经活动), which cause coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, the obromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness. 12. According to Professor Barnes, the obromine __________. A. cannot be as effective as codeine B. can be harmful to people’s health C. cannot be separated from chocolate D. can be a more effective cure (疗法) for coughs 13. What was used in the experiment to cause coughing? A. The obromine. B. Codeine. C. Capsaicin. D. Placebo. 14. We learn from the text that volunteers in the experiment __________. A. were patients with bad coughs B. were divided into the three groups C. received standard treatments D. suffered little side effects (副作用) 15. Which of the following would be the best title for the text? A. Codeine: A New Medicine B. Chocolate May Cure Coughs C. Cough Treatment: A Hard Case D. The Obromine Can Cause Coughs 第二节 七选五 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Having a shy style isn’t necessarily a problem. It’s OK to take time to warm up to new people and situations. 16 Some people want to feel less shy so they can enjoy socializing (交往) and being themselves around others. Here are some tips on overcoming shy feelings. ● 17 Practice social behaviors like eye contact (接触), confident body language, introductions, small talk, asking questions, and invitations with people you feel most comfortable around. Smile and build your confidence. ● Think of some conversation starters. Often the hardest part of talking to someone new is getting started. Think of conversation openers, like introducing yourself, giving a compliment (赞美), or asking a question. 18 ● Rehearse (排练) what to say. When you are ready to try something you’ve been avoiding because of shyness — like a phone call or a conversation, write down what you want to say. Read it out aloud in front of a mirror. Then just do your social activities. 19 Few of the things that more confident people do are perfect, either. ● Give yourself a chance. 20 Practice socializing with these new people and get to know them slowly. People who are shy often worry about failing or how others will judge them. Don’t let these worries and feelings keep you from trying. A. Start small with people you know. B. Then you can start smiling and saying “hello” in real life. C. One of the best ways to get over shyness is to believe in yourself. D. Find group activities where you can be with people who share your interests. E. Being ready with a conversation starter makes it easier to approach (接洽) someone. F. Don’t worry if they’re not exactly (完全地) like you have practiced or they’re not perfect. G. But shyness prevents some people from being as comfortable as they’d like to be. 第二部分 语言知识运用 (共三节,满分55分) 第一节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分) I used to be a very self-centered person, but in the past two years I have really changed.
