Russian writer Leo Tolstoy is widely seen as one of the greatest European novelists of all time.
As the fourth of five children, Tolstoy was born into a family of old Russian nobility in Yasnaya Polyana, an estate (庄园) in the region of Tula in Central European Russia. His parents died when he was a child and he was brought up by relatives. At 16, after more than two years of intense preparations, Tolstoy entered Kazan University to study Oriental languages and later took up law. But he didn’t enjoy the classes and his teachers described him as both unable and unwilling to learn. Tolstoy dropped out before completing his courses, returned to the family estate and began spending a large amount of time in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
In 1851, Tolstoy accompanied his elder brother to the Caucasus. He joined the army and spent almost three years in a Cossack village. He began writing and published his first short novel Childhood, which, like Boyhood and Youth that followed, was inspired by Tolstoy’s own early years. After the publication, its author woke up famous.
After leaving the army in 1857, Tolstoy traveled to Europe. As a keen reader, fluent in English, French and German, he became interested in the European educational system. Upon his return to Russia, Tolstoy founded a school for farmers’ children in Yasnaya Polyana, where he himself taught. He returned to Europe in 1860, visiting more schools in France, Italy, Germany and Britain, and published magazines and textbooks on the subject.
Tolstoy’s major work, War and Peace, appeared between the years 1865 and 1869. It is widely thought to be one of the greatest novels ever written, which tells the story of several families against the background of Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia. The book has about 580 characters, with many historical, others fabricated. The story is a dramatic mix of events and people, playing out from Moscow’s ballrooms to the battlefields of Austerlitz and Borodino.
On a late autumn evening in 1910, 82-year-old Tolstoy died of illness at a remote railway station.
4. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?

On the way to his forest farm in Weda Bay on the Indonesian island of Halmahera, Librek Loha let out a cry of fear. “Aduuuuh,” he said. “Landslides! Again! They happen all the time now.”
The mudslide below Loha’s plantings of cacao, nutmeg and pineapple has exposed more orange, rocky soil, adding to miles of bulldozed (被推土机推平的) forest and river that are leaving the farm an island of green amid red-brown. Where trees once grew, there are dusty warehouses, mountains of black coal, and water that runs brown.
This region of Weda Bay is now one of the world’s largest nickel (镍) production facilities. Multiple coal-fired power plants burn nonstop to refine nickel ore into material for batteries and steel.
Indonesia aims to dominate the world’s nickel supply, and it’s succeeding. The country has gone from having two nickel-processing plants to 27 over the last 10 years, with 22 more planned. Last year, the country was responsible for more than half the supply of nickel globally. The metal was once known mainly for making stainless steel; now demand has skyrocketed as automakers like Tesla need it for electric vehicle batteries and companies that make larger batteries need it for clean electricity projects. But where developers built out these vast nickel-processing plants, the surrounding forest disappeared twice as fast, according to a new analysis by the Indonesian nonprofit Auriga.
Indonesia is the world’s third most rainforest-covered country, home to giant forest flowers and endangered orangutans and elephants. Since 1950, more than 740,000 square kilometers of Indonesian rainforest have been logged, burned or degraded, according to Global Forest Watch.
Max Sigoro, 54, is a traditional hunter and farmer. Bright lights and noise from construction drive away the deer he used to hunt at night. He says he’s lost nearly all his previous income since the industrial park’s expansion.

B. Weda Bay is a major tourist attraction.

9. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Nickel-processing plants would be closed soon.
B. The population of Indonesia has grown rapidly.
C. Air pollution control will be more expensive.
D. Deforestation may increase hugely in Indonesia.

Thethiwe Mahlangu woke early on a cold morning and walked through her busy South African township, where minibuses picked up passengers. Her eyes had been troubling her. But instead of going to her nearby health clinic, Mahlangu was headed to the train station for an unusual form of care.
A passenger train known as Phelophepa — or “good clean, health” in the Sesotho language — has been transformed into a mobile health facility. It travels throughout South Africa for much of the year, providing medical attention to the sick, young and old who often struggle to receive the care they need at crowded local clinics. For the past 30 years, the train has carried doctors and nurses on an annual journey that touches even the most rural villages, delivering primary health care to about 375,000 people a year.
The free care the “health train” delivers is in contrast to South Africa’s overstretched public health care system on which about 84% of people rely. Just 16% of South Africans are covered by health insurance plans that are beyond the financial reach of many in a nation with unemployment of over 32%.
Earlier this year, the government began to address that gap. President Cyril Ramaphosa in May signed into law — the National Health Insurance Act, which aims to provide funding so that millions of South Africans without health insurance can receive care from the private hospitals.
For Mahlangu and others who look to the train for a rare source of free treatment, the situation at local health clinics is one of despair. Long lines, shortages of medicines and rude nurses are some of the challenges at the clinics that serve thousands of patients a day in Tembisa, east of Johannesburg.
The “health train” has grown from a single three-carriage operation over the years to two, 16-carriage trains. Now both trains address the rising population of South Africa’s capital of Pretoria and nearby Johannesburg, the country’s economic center.
12. What does the author want to show by mentioning 375,000 people?
A. Contributions Phelophepa has made. B. Efforts from doctors in big hospitals.
C. The annual birth rate in South Africa. D. The number of visitors to South Africa.
13. What can we learn about South Africa from paragraph 3?
A. Its education quality needs improving.
B. Its public health care can’t benefit most people.
C. Its medical staff are nice and friendly.
D. Its public transportation is well-developed.
14 How did Mahlangu find local health clinics?
A. Far. B. Well-staffed. C. Unsatisfactory. D. Big.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Research on Train Communication Network
B. The Process of Political Change in South Africa
C. South Africa’s “Health Train” Travels to Patients in Need
D. Medical Technology Has Advanced Considerably

Mr. Carter, a 42-year-old office worker, decided to spend his Saturday afternoon hiking. It was a cool autumn day, and the trees in the nearby park wore bright red and yellow leaves. Known for forgetting things, he accidentally left his phone charging at home — something he almost never did. His only companion was Max, his friendly golden retriever dog (寻猎犬). Together, they followed a dirt path they had walked many times before.
As they walked, Mr. Carter noticed a bright blue bird sitting on a tree branch. Wanting to see it better, he moved closer to a small stream. But the rocks under his feet were loose and wet. Suddenly, the ground disappeared, and he fell three meters down into a deep, muddy hole. A terrible pain exploded in his right ankle when he landed.
“Max! Max!” he called, his voice shaking. The dog barked loudly and ran in circles above the hole. Mr. Carter saw a thick tree branch nearby. Grabbing it, he tried to climb up the slippery walls. Twice he almost reached the top, but both times he fell back down, cutting his hands on sharp rocks. His watch said 3:15 pm. The sun would set at 5 pm, and the park was getting quieter as other hikers had left earlier.
Biting his lip to stop crying, Mr. Carter had an idea. He turned sideways like a crab and pushed himself up the muddy slope using his left leg (his right ankle was too hurt). His blue jeans turned brown from the wet dirt, and his shoes were filled with cold water. Max stayed close, sometimes licking his face as if saying, “You can do it!”
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
At 5 pm, as the sky darkened, Mr. Carter used a branch as a walking stick and finally dragged himself onto the flat ground near some picnic tables.

Waving the muddy branch with his last strength, Mr. Carter heard a boy shout, “Sir! Are you OK?”

Thethiwe Mahlangu woke early on a cold morning and walked through her busy South African township, where minibuses picked up passengers. Her eyes had been troubling her. But instead of going to her nearby health clinic, Mahlangu was headed to the train station for an unusual form of care.
A passenger train known as Phelophepa — or “good, clean, health” in the Sesotho language — has been transformed into a mobile health facility.
14. How did Mahlangu find local health clinics?
A. Far. B. Well-staffed. C. Unsatisfactory. D. Big.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Research on Train Communication Network
B. The Process of Political Change in South Africa
C. South Africa’s “Health Train” Travels to Patients in Need
D. Medical Technology Has Advanced Considerably

故填was listed。
故填of。

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
At 5 pm, as the sky darkened, Mr. Carter used a branch as a walking stick and finally dragged himself onto the flat ground near some picnic tables.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Waving the muddy branch with his last strength, Mr. Carter heard a boy shout, “Sir! Are you OK?”
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
At 5 pm, as the sky darkened, Mr. Carter used a branch as a walking stick and finally dragged himself onto the flat ground near some picnic tables. His mouth felt full of sand, but when he heard footsteps, he shouted weakly, “Help! Over here!” Max was also barking beside him. Three people running by didn’t hear him. Later, a family walked nearby, but their happy voices moved away. Just as Mr. Carter's eyes started closing from tiredness, he heard a “ding-ding” bicycle bell.
Waving the muddy branch with his last strength Mr. Carter heard a boy shout, “Sir! Are you OK?”A teenager in a blue jacket slid down the slope, phone already dialing 911. While waiting, he gave Mr. Carter his scarf and petted trembling Max. Soon, an ambulance arrived. The rescuers carefully put Mr. Carter inside and drove him to the hospital. Doctors said he had a twisted ankle and his body was too cold from being wet and cold for too long. Now better, Mr. Carter always charges his phone and helps rescue teams — hoping to return the kindness he got that chilly day.
①大喊:shout/yell
②关闭:close/shut
