Here are some wonderful festivals around the world that happen in spring. If you want to know more about them, please click here or visit http://www.buddhanet.net/festival.htm
Songkran—Thailand
Dates: 13 th-15th, April
In Thailand, people celebrate a festival called Songkran, when people head out to the streets with water guns to spray (喷洒) everyone who walks past. It’s a very important traditional celebration in the country.
Naghol—Vanuatu
Dates: Every Saturday from April to May
Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (潜水) ceremony”. During the ceremony men and boys dive to the ground from high wooden towers with only two thin vines (藤) tied to their feet.
Cherry Blossom Viewing—Japan
Dates: The cherry blossom season is different from year to year depending on the weather.
The festival is well-known. The Japanese celebrate the days when the flowers finally blossom. Only a few days later, the petals (花瓣) fall to the ground, like pink snowflakes. That means the traditional festival only lasts for several days. In Japan, almost everyone has picnics in the parks to view the flowers.
Sinhalese New Year—Sri Lanka
Dates: 13th or 14th, April
Just like in many other countries in South East Asia, this is the time when people celebrate the traditional New Year, an ancient celebration which marks the end of the harvest season and is one of two times of the year when the sun is straight above Sri Lanka. There are a lot of delicious foods during the celebration.
1. What will most likely happen to a tourist walking in the street during SongKran in Thailand?
A. He will get wet. B. He will hurt his feet.
C. He will be treated to delicious foods. D. He will see some petal falling.
2. How is Cherry Blossom Viewing different from the other festivals?
A. It is a traditional festival. B. It is a very famous festival.
C. Its date is different every year. D. It provides visitors with delicious foods.
3. Where are you most likely to find the text?
A. On TV. B. In a report. C. On the Internet. D. In the newspaper.

Tia Wimbush and Susan Elis have been co-workers for a decade, and while they didn’t know each other well, they had something in common, both dealing with the same medical stress at home. Their husbands each needed a kidney transplant( 肾脏移植). They were willing to donate one of theirs, but previous tests showed theirs weren’t apposite to their respective husbands.
When they knew each other’s condition and met in the washroom, the women paused for a moment and had a short conversation. Then they had tests again. Tests showed that each woman was an excellent match for the other’s husband. And seven months after that chance conversation, Tia donated one of her kidneys to Susan’s husband Lance Ellis, and Susan donated one of hers to Tia’s husband Rodney Wimbush.
“It is extremely rare for two people to suggest exchanging their own paired organ and actually be a match for each other. I’ve personally never seen this happen,” Christina Klein, a medical director of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital’s kidney transplant program, says. “When we put patients’ information into large databases for national paired kidney exchange programs, some patients wait months or even years for a match.”
The couples met a few days before the surgeries when they came to the hospital for the final round of testing. Before that, they had chatted on social media a bit. The surgeries lasted about three to four hours each and were beyond their expectations, with no one developing complications. “ It’s really just a story about simple kindness,” Susan says, “For us, it started with two people just being good humans. Now we’d like to tell people they can do the same. ”
Rodney says he will be forever grateful to his wife and Susan. “Susan and Lance are going to come with us to North Carolina for our son’s first college football game,” his wife adds, “ We’ve skipped the friendship. We’re family now.”
4. What does the underlined word “apposite” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Sensitive. B. Relevant. C. Suited. D. Comparable.
5. How does Christina Klein find Tia and Susan’s story?
A. It is touching. B. It is inspiring.
C. It is worrying. D. It is surprising.
6. What is the change in the two families after the transplant operations?
A. They bond with each other closely.
B. They become interested in football.
C. They interact more regularly online.
D. They are motivated to do good deeds.
7. Which can be the best title of the text?
A. A Different Family B. An Unimaginable Match
C. A Funny Coincidence D. An Unforgettable Kindness
C 5. D 6. A 7. B
根据划线单词上一句“Their husbands each needed a kidney transplant(肾脏移植). They were willing to donate one of theirs(她们的丈夫都需要肾脏移植。她们都愿意捐出自己的一个肾脏)”可知,她们俩人的丈夫都需要肾脏移植,而她们也都乐意捐出自己的一个肾脏。然而,划线单词所在句句首的“but”则说明情况有变。根据划线单词后的“to their respective husbands.(她们各自的丈夫)”可判断,划线单词意思和“匹配、适合”相似。故选C。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段““It is extremely rare for two people to suggest exchanging their own paired organ and actually be a match for each other. I’ve personally never seen this happen,” Christina Klein, a medical director of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital’s kidney transplant program, says. “When we put patients’ information into large databases for national paired kidney exchange programs, some patients wait months or even years for a match.”(两个人建议交换自己的配对器官,并真正成为对方的配对器官,这是极其罕见的。“我个人从未见过这种情况发生,”皮埃蒙特亚特兰大医院肾脏移植项目的医学主任克里斯蒂娜克莱因说。“当我们把病人的信息输入国家配对肾脏交换项目的大型数据库时,一些病人要等几个月甚至几年才能得到匹配。”)”可知,这种巧合几率太小了,所以这两个女士的故事真的是太令人惊讶了。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Rodney says he will be forever grateful to his wife and Susan. “Susan and Lance are going to come with us to North Carolina for our son’s first college football game,” his wife adds, “ We’ve skipped the friendship. We’re family now.”(罗德尼说,他将永远感激他的妻子和苏珊。“苏珊和兰斯要和我们一起去北卡罗来纳看我们儿子的第一场大学橄榄球比赛,”他的妻子补充道,“我们已经放弃了友谊。我们现在是一家人了。”)”可知,这两家人现在关系很密切,就像家人一样。故选A。
根据文章第二段“When they knew each other’s condition and met in the washroom, the women paused for a moment and had a short conversation. Then they had tests again. Tests showed that each woman was an excellent match for the other’s husband. And seven months after that chance conversation, Tia donated one of her kidneys to Susan’s husband Lance Ellis, and Susan donated one of hers to Tia’s husband Rodney Wimbush.(当她们知道彼此的病情并在洗手间见面时,两位女士停顿了一会儿,进行了简短的交谈。
C
Imagine a future where we can feast on meat, but no animals have been killed in the process. Only 16% of the UK population enjoy a meat-free diet, according to statistics website Finder.com. It seems there is a call for lab-grown meat as a substitute to traditional meat. But, despite years of expectation, this futuristic food is still not on our plates. Why?
One of the biggest reasons is cost. The first ever lab-grown hamburger was introduced in 2013 by Dutch scientist Mark Post. It was created from beef cells and cost more than $300,000. Lab-grown meat production goes from thousands to hundreds of thousands of US dollars per ounce — that’s the weight of about two chicken nuggets (鸡块). This expense is partly due to the cost of raw materials that ‘feed’ the cells — a combination of sugar, proteins and other nutrients is added to the cells.
In 2023, US-based company Upside Foods received authority from the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration to start selling lab-grown meat. In order to do this, the company has had to take on significant economic losses so that they can price it fairly compared to traditional meat. An investor in Upside Food, Lisa Feria, told Forbes magazine “Profitability is very much years off because the biggest challenge ahead of them is: can we make it at millions of tons a year and finally slightly compete with traditional meat?”
There are also environmental costs. A 2023 study by the University of California found that the process of producing lab-grown meat could have a four to 25 times higher impact on global warming than beef, which is generally the highest-polluting meat. This is mostly because of the emissions needed to create ‘feed’.
So, it seems unlikely that we’ll be eating lab-grown meat just yet, and we possibly never will. After all, no company would take a risk of bankrupt to create a product that is of higher cost than profit as well as not environment-friendly.
8. What can be known from the first paragraph?
A. Most of the British eat a diet without meat.
B. Most of the British eat a diet with meat.
C. Lab-grown meat has been served in the UK.
D. Lab-grown meat will serve as a replacement for traditional meat.
9. Why does the author mention the first ever lab-grown hamburger in paragraph 2?
A. To make a contrast. B. To draw a conclusion.
C. To place an emphasis. D. To give an example.
10. What is Lisa’s attitude towards the future of lab-grown meat?
A. Optimistic. B. Indifferent. C. Favorable. D. Uncertain.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Lab-grown meat and the reasons for its unpopularity.
B. The choice of traditional meat or lab-grown meat.
C. The problems of the diets in the UK.
D. A rising trend of choosing lab-grown meat.
B 9. D 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“Only 16% of the UK population enjoy a meat-free diet, according to statistics website Finder.com. It seems there is a call for lab-grown meat as a substitute to traditional meat. But, despite years of expectation, this futuristic food is still not on our plates(根据统计网站Finder.com的数据,英国只有16%的人口喜欢无肉饮食。似乎有人呼吁用实验室培育的肉来替代传统肉类。但是,尽管期待了多年,这种未来主义的食物仍然没有出现在我们的餐桌上)”可知,英国只有16%的人是无肉饮食,那么大部分人是吃肉的,故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“One of the biggest reasons is cost. The first ever lab-grown hamburger was introduced in 2013 by Dutch scientist Mark Post. It was created from beef cells and cost more than $300,000. Lab-grown meat production goes from thousands to hundreds of thousands of US dollars per ounce — that’s the weight of about two chicken nuggets
根据第三段“An investor in Upside Food, Lisa Feria, told Forbes magazine ‘Profitability is very much years off because the biggest challenge ahead of them is: can we make it at millions of tons a year and finally slightly compete with traditional meat?’(Upside Food的投资者丽莎・费里亚告诉《福布斯》杂志:“要实现盈利还需要很多年,因为他们面临的最大挑战是:我们能否每年生产数百万吨,最终与传统肉类稍有竞争力?”)”
根据第一段“It seems there is a call for lab-grown meat as a substitute to traditional meat. But, despite years of expectation, this futuristic food is still not on our plates. Why?(似乎有人呼吁用实验室培育的肉类来替代传统肉类。但是,尽管多年来一直备受期待,这种未来主义的食物仍然没有出现在我们的餐桌上。这是为什么呢?)”、第二段“One of the biggest reasons is cost. (其中一个最大的原因是成本)”、第四段“A 2023 study by the University of California found that the process of producing lab-grown meat could have a four to 25 times higher impact on global warming than beef, which is generally the highest-polluting meat.(加利福尼亚大学2023年的一项研究发现,与普遍污染最严重的牛肉相比,实验室培育肉的生产过程可能导致全球变暖的影响高出4至25倍)”以及最后一段“So, it seems unlikely that we’ll be eating lab-grown meat just yet, and we possibly never will. After all, no company would take a risk of bankrupt to create a product that is of higher cost than profit as well as not environment-friendly(因此,我们似乎不太可能很快就会吃到实验室培育的肉,而且可能永远也不会。毕竟,没有一家公司会冒险破产去生产一种成本高于利润且不环保的产品)”可知,文章主要是在介绍实验室培育的肉以及它不受欢迎的原因。故选A项。
D
Elephants, the largest land mammals on the planet, are magnificent creatures and tourists rush to African countries to see them. Due to very successful conservation efforts, the African elephant population in countries like Kenya is growing. In the country’s popular Tsavo National Park, elephant numbers went from around 6,000 to almost 15,000 in 2021.
While this is great news for conservationists, it’s not seen that way by farmers who live in between two parts of the park. The human population has also grown and this means that it affects elephants’ feeding and migration areas, which has led to conflicts (冲突) between humans and elephants, sometimes resulting in elephant deaths.
Now a new solution using honeybees has been found to keep the elephants away from farms. This seemingly unlikely solution is part of a long-running project from the Save the Elephants organization. The sound of African honeybees prevents elephants. Now yellow-painted beehive fences (蜂巢围栏) protect some of the local areas. The project is supporting 40 farmers whose crops are protected by 15 hives. Each of the hives is strung on a wire a few meters off the ground. This protects them from insects and allows them to shake if they are disturbed by an elephant, which starts the bees making sounds. This frightens the elephant away.
A nine-year study tracked 26 farms that were protected by the beehive fences in two villages near the park. During the high growing seasons — November to January from 2014 to 2020 — 3,027 elephants approached the fences and most were prevented. During the drought of 2017, which reduced the number of bees in the hives by 75%, elephants were still prevented 76% of the time.
Save the Elephants is now promoting beehive fences in 15 countries in Africa and Asia. But besides preventing elephants, the beehive fences can provide other benefits to communities. Bees provide pollination services which can increase crop production and honey from the hives that farmers can sell to increase their income.
While this solution isn’t perfect, and is subject to the negative effects of climate change and drought, it does show that elephants and humans can share the land without conflicts.
12. What can be inferred from the first two paragraphs?
A. The elephants are the most attractive creatures to tourists in Kenya.
B. The protection efforts of elephants in Kenya are in vain.
C. The elephant population growth in Kenya mixes happiness with sadness.
D. The increasing migration areas in Kenya have caused many elephants’ deaths.
13. What does the underlined “this” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The bees making sounds. B. The insects making sounds.
C. The beehives shaking. D. The painted-yellow fence.
14. Why does the author mention the nine-year study in paragraph 4?
A. To stress the importance of protecting elephants.
B. To show the popularity of beehive fences.
C. To prove the effectiveness of the new solution.
D. To show the effect of climate change on the number of bees.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Growth of African Elephant Population B. The Importance of Saving African Elephants
C. Effect of Climate Change on Elephant Habitat D. Pioneering Solution to Elephant-Human Conflict
C 13. A 14. C 15. D
根据第一段中“Due to very successful conservation efforts, the African elephant population in countries like Kenya is growing. In the country’s popular Tsavo National Park, elephant numbers went from around 6,000 to almost 15,000 in 2021.(由于非常成功的保护工作,肯尼亚等国家的非洲象数量正在增加。在该国著名的察沃国家公园,2021年大象数量从约6000头增加到近15000头)”可知,大象数量增长是令人高兴的事;结合第二段“While this is great news for conservationists, it’s not seen that way by farmers who live in between two parts of the park. The human population has also grown and this means that it affects elephants’ feeding and migration areas, which has led to conflicts (冲突) between humans and elephants, sometimes resulting in elephant deaths.(虽然这对保护主义者来说是个好消息,但住在公园两部分之间的农民并不这么认为。人口也在增长,这意味着它影响了大象的觅食和迁徙区域,导致了人类和大象之间的冲突,有时还会导致大象死亡)”可知,大象数量增长也带来了人象冲突等令人担忧的问题。由此可推断出,肯尼亚大象数量的增长是喜忧参半的。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段中“This protects them from insects and allows them to shake if they are disturbed by an elephant, which starts the bees making sounds. This frightens the elephant away.(这可以保护它们免受昆虫侵害,如果它们被大象惊扰,就会晃动,这会让蜜蜂发出声音。这会把大象吓跑)”可知,是蜜蜂发出的声音把大象吓跑了,所以指示代词“this”指的是前文中“the bees making sounds”,即“蜜蜂发出声音”。故选A项。
根据第四段“A nine year study tracked 26 farms that were protected by the beehive fences in two villages near the park. During the high growing seasons — November to January from 2014 to 2020 — 3,027 elephants approached the fences and most were prevented. During the drought of 2017, which reduced the number of bees in the hives by 75%, elephants were still prevented 76% of the time.(一项为期九年的研究跟踪了公园附近两个村庄中26个由蜂巢围栏保护的农场。在2014年至2020年的生长旺季——11月至1月——有3027头大象接近围栏,大多数都被挡住了。在2017年的干旱期间,蜂巢中的蜜蜂数量减少了75%,但大象仍有76%的时间被挡住)”可知,作者提到的这项九年研究数据表明了蜂巢围栏在阻止大象方面的有效性,也就是证明了新解决方案的有效性。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第三段中“Now a new solution using honeybees has been found to keep the elephants away from farms.(现在,人们发现了一种利用蜜蜂的新解决方案,可以让大象远离农场)”和最后一段“While this solution isn’t perfect, and is subject to the negative effects of climate change and drought, it does show that elephants and humans can share the land without conflicts.(虽然这个解决方案并不完美,还会受到气候变化和干旱的负面影响,但它确实表明大象和人类可以在没有冲突的情况下共享土地)”可知,本文主要介绍了一种解决人象冲突的创新方案。
Over three and a half hours each day spent fixing my eyes on my phone screen? And of that time, almost two hours were spent using social networking? I kept telling myself that couldn’t be right. Yet, the numbers were considerable. What shocked me the most was how it didn’t seem like I was spending that much time on my phone. Perhaps some of you reading this also feel the same? If so, it’s OK. ____16____ And it will in turn hopefully enable you to be more focused when studying!
Set limits
Are you someone who manages to spend hours on Douyin or Little Red Book before starting any of your homework? Or perhaps you’re slightly addicted to the games on your phone? ____17____ When you only have one minute left for the phone, prepare to log out of all social media gaming apps.
____18____
There is a choice to schedule “Downtime” away from your phone. During this time, only limited apps (ones that you choose to allow) and phone calls will be available. As a student, you can try scheduling this for the time that you complete your homework after school. This will be an effective way to get rid of those distracting (使注意力分散的) apps. ____19____
Turn off notifications
____20____ They will check whenever a new notification pops up on their screen! When this is turned on, all calls and notifications are silenced; your phone won’t vibrate, and your screen won’t light up when your phone is locked. Another choice you could try is to simply put your phone on Airplane Mode. Again, this will get rid of any notifications that are often so distracting.
A. Shut off phones
B. Schedule downtime
C. Prevent yourself from being addicted to games.
D. This choice is for those who are easily distracted.
E. Hopefully, this will help you much more focus on your homework!
F. If so, limit yourself to one hour (or even less) of these activities a day.
G. The good news is that you can learn how to cut down on your phone screen time.
G 17. F 18. B 19. E 20. D

上文“And of that time, almost two hours were spent using social networking? I kept telling myself that couldn’t be right. Yet, the numbers were considerable. What shocked me the most was how it didn’t seem like I was spending that much time on my phone. Perhaps some of you reading this also feel the same? If so, it’s OK. (在那段时间里,近两个小时都花在了使用社交网络上?我一直告诉自己这不可能是真的。然而,数据相当可观。最让我震惊的是,我似乎并没有在手机上花那么多时间。也许读到这篇文章的你们中的一些人也有同样的感觉?如果是这样,没关系)”指出作者对自己在手机屏幕上花费的大量时间感到惊讶,且意识到很多人可能也有同样感受。G选项“The good news is that you can learn how to cut down on your phone screen time.(好消息是你可以学习如何减少在手机屏幕上花费的时间)”承接上文这种担忧,提出解决的办法,引出下文介绍减少使用手机时间的具体方法。故选G项。
上文“Are you someone who manages to spend hours on Douyin or Little Red Book before starting any of your homework? Or perhaps you’re slightly addicted to the games on your phone?(你是不是那种在开始做作业前会在抖音或小红书上花好几个小时的人?或者你是不是有点沉迷于手机上的游戏?)”指出一些人在使用手机娱乐方面花费时间过长的问题。F选项“If so, limit yourself to one hour (or even less) of these activities a day.(如果是这样,限制自己每天进行这些活动的时间为一小时(甚至更少))”针对上文提到的情况给出了限制使用时间的建议,与上文逻辑紧密。故选F项。
根据下文“There is a choice to schedule ‘Downtime’ away from your phone.(有一种选择是安排远离手机的‘休息时间’)”可知,该段主要围绕安排远离手机的休息时间展开。

根据“Among many lakes on the north of the Yangtze River”可知,这里是在众多湖泊中进行比较,且空前有定冠词the,所以要用形容词的最高级形式,large的最高级是largest,故填largest。
“date back to”是固定短语,意为“追溯到,始于”,故填to。
“came to Yuantouzhu(来到鼋头渚)”和“planted 1,500 cherry trees with the citizens of Wuxi(与无锡市民一起种植了1500棵樱花树)”是并列顺承关系,所以要用连词and连接,故填and。
根据“Since then”可知本句表示从过去开始持续到现在的动作或状态,谓语动词要用现在完成时,其结构为“have/has +过去分词”,主语“more than 10,000 Japanese friends”是复数,助动词用have,return的过去分词是returned,故填have returned。

A Birthday Surprise
I stood at the kitchen window watching Papa as he sat in the old, wooden lawn chair staring out at the lake. Ralph, his old black dog, lay on the ground at his side. Papa’s hand absently stroked (抚摩) the head of his old companion as they dreamed the dreams of old men and old dogs in the evening sun. “He does this day after day?” I asked Mama.
She nodded, sadness filling her eyes. “I don’t know what to do for him. There is a strong desire in his eyes that I can’t satisfy -a desire for the past. The past can’t be brought back to the present. Once days are gone, they are gone forever,” Mama sighed.
“I’m going down to talk to him,” I said.
I called out to Papa and handed him a cup of coffee. “What are you and Ralph thinking about all these hours you spend out here?” I asked,
“We’re not thinking,” he said softly. “We’re wishing.” I sat on the grass beside his chair. “Wishing for what?” “For the impossible, I suppose,” he sighed. “You always told me that nothing was impossible if you wanted it badly enough and were willing to work hard for it,” I reminded him.
He laughed softly, but there was no amusement in the sound. “But Ralph and I have come to learn that when you reach our age, some things are actually impossible.” “Maybe I can help you. What do you want so badly?” I asked.
Papa grinned (咧嘴大笑), and his eyes shone brightly at the thought of his dream becoming a reality. “Ralph and I want to fix up the old boat and go out on the lake again. We used to spend all day out on the lake, fishing, drinking beer and eating sandwiches,” Papa said.
Yes, I remember. When I was young, Papa and Ralph often enjoyed themselves on the lake on weekends. They’d start for home when the sun went down, totally satisfied with themselves and with life. Now, Papa was almost eighty-five years old and had a heart condition, so Mama was horrified by the idea of him going out on the lake again at first. But eventually I managed to convince her.

One possible version
After Mama agreed, I persuaded my friends to join in my secret plan. I decided to fix up the old boat. The boat didn’t fall apart, and the paint had faded and cracked. We spent several weekends repairing and painting the boat. I replaced the faded and cracked seat cushions while my friends repaired the motor. We expected Papa to be proud of the boat a s he and Ralph went out on the lake again. Tired as we were, we were happy to complete the restoration. I wouldn’t let off the secret until Papa’s birthday.
Then came the day and we were all eager to give him a surprise. He could hardly believe his eyes when we showed him the new boat. Then we said “Happy birthday” to him in chorus, and he was so touched that tears blurred his eyes. After that, we put sandwiches and dog biscuits on it while Mama also bought Papa a new hat. Soon, we all stood by the lake and watched as Papa and Ralph sailed away, Papa waving and laughing. Seeing him so happy, I felt that everything I did for him was rewarding.

Every year, villagers come together to celebrate the harvest of yams (甘薯), an important part in the people’s diet in Vanuatu. The festival is most famous for its “land diving (潜水) ceremony”.
I’ve personally never seen this happen” Christina Klein, a medical director of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital’s kidney transplant program, says. “When we put patients’ information into large databases for national paired kidney exchange programs, some patients wait months or even years for a match.”
The couples met a few days before the surgeries when they came to the hospital for the final round of testing. Before that, they had chatted on social media a bit.
So it seems unlikely that we’ll be eating lab-grown meat just yet, and we possibly never will. After all, no company would take a risk of bankrupt to create a product that is of higher cost than profit as well as not environment-friendly.
8. What can be known from the first paragraph?

A. Optimistic.

“What are you and Ralph thinking about all these hours you spend out here?” I asked
