Melissa Wolf’s clients come in all shapes and sizes. Some have two legs, and some have four. All of them need a second chance.
Wolf is the founder of UnChained, a nonprofit organization in northern California that pairs vulnerable young people with abandoned or abused dogs that have been rescued from shelters. The youth learn to train the dogs in basic skills and better prepare them for adoption.
UnChained, founded in 2011, was born from Wolf’s own passion and personal experiences. When she was in her early 20s and working for a nonprofit in Texas, she was shocked by the animal neglect (忽视) she witnessed in some areas.
“Our kids often share very similar stories to the dogs, and we bring that into our classes. Many of our kids have experienced risk factors that have led them to the lives where they are,” Wolf said. “They experience joy, anger, fear and loneliness. When young people in our program can understand that they may share a similar story with a dog in need, and help that dog on a path to success, it can transform how they see themselves and their future.”
The program fosters empathy, compassion, and responsibility as students train and build trust with their designated (认定的) dog. At the end of the eight weeks, there is a graduation ceremony where adopters, parents, and teachers gather to celebrate the young people and dogs alike. And students get to show guests what they’ve taught their dogs.
By establishing an emotional connection and teaching young people about a dog’s needs, Wolf says her team sees a change occur. It’s a win-win for both the young person and the animal.
“There is a lighting up of those children’s eyes and faces, and we start to see the magic that happens and our kids’ understanding that dogs experience feelings very similar to humans,” Wolf said.
4. What is the goal of the UnChained program?
A. To provide legal aid for animals.
B. To train the youth to prepare dogs for adoption.
C. To offer job services to troubled teens.
D. To pair the youth with dogs for friendship.
5. Which of the following motivated Wolf to establish UnChained?
A. Her career as a dog trainer.
B. A vision for a new pet adoption model.
C. A general passion for animal rights.
D. Her witness to neglected animals.
6. What do the youth do at the graduation ceremony?
A. Say good-bye to their parents.
B. Present their academic progress.
C. Show their dog training results.
D. Meet with adoptive dog owners.
7. How does Wolf sound in the last paragraph?
A. Encouraged and satisfied. B. Nervous and thrilled.
C. Appreciative and optimistic. D. Reflective and hopeful.

Think of a typical college physics course: notetaking, homework struggles and studying for difficult exams. Now imagine access to a tutor (导师) who answers questions at any hour, never tires and never judges. Might you learn more? The AI-supported tutor is surprisingly more effective. That’s the unexpected conclusion from a Harvard study examining learning outcomes for students in a large physics course.
The study was led by lecturer Gregory Kestin and Kelly Miller, who analyzed learning outcomes of 194 students registered in fall 2023 in Kestin’s Physical Sciences 2 course. Before the study, the team created instructions for the AI tutor to follow for each lesson so it’d behave like an experienced instructor.
The students were divided into two groups, each of whom experienced two lessons in continual weeks. During the first week, Group 1 participated in an instructor-guided active learning classroom lesson, while Group 2 engaged with an AI-supported lesson at home that followed a research-informed design; conditions were changed oppositely the following week.
“We went into the study curious about whether our AI tutor could be as effective as in-person instructors,” Kestin said. “I certainly didn’t expect students to find the AI-powered lesson more engaging. But that’s exactly what happened: Not only did the AI tutor seem to help students learn more materials, the students also self-reported more engagement when working with AI.”
The researchers found that learning gains for students in the AI-tutored group were about double those for students in the in-class group. The researchers believe students’ ability to get personalized feedback (反馈) and self pace with the AI tutor are advantages. “In various in-class settings, students with a strong background in the material may be less engaged, and they’re sometimes bored,” Miller said. “Students without the background sometimes struggle to keep up. So the fact that this AI tutor can be supportive of that difference is probably the biggest thing.”
“However, AI could also hurt learning if we’re not careful,” Kestin said. “AI tutors shouldn’t ‘think’ for students, but rather help them build critical thinking skills. AI tutors shouldn’t replace in-person instruction, but help all students better prepare for it.”
8. What were the participants required to do in the study?
A. Report their partners’ feelings. B. Study with different tutors in turn.
C. Make a choice between two courses. D. Instruct the AI tutor in learning skills.
9. What did Kestin most probably think of their findings?
A. Valueless. B. Doubtful. C. Surprising. D. Confusing.
10. What might probably lead to students’ less engagement in class according to the text?
A. Knowing the materials well in advance. B. Inexperienced in-class instructors.
C. Feeling bored with AI’s questions. D. Their struggles with the teacher.
11. What can we learn from what Kestin said?
A. There exists the potential misuse of AI. B. Researchers are more positive about AI.
C. AI tutors should develop critical thinking. D. In-person instruction benefits students more.
【答案】8 B 9. C 10. A 11. A

Tiny black-capped chickadees (黑顶山雀) have good memories. They store food in many different locations in the wild, and then return to these places when other food sources are low. Some researchers thought that neurons called “place cells” would explain these birds’ ability to remember their hidden food. These cells encode information about where things are. But recently, a team of researchers found that each time a black-capped chickadee hides a seed in a specific location, a unique brain pattern appears in the hippocampus (海马体) — separate from place cells. Selmaan Chettih, a neuroscientist from Columbia University, compared it to a barcode (条形码).
“The hippocampus was like a flipped switch. This new pattern of activity was different from the place cells,” Chettih says. To observe this, Chettih built a special area with feeders full of sunflower seeds in the corners. He put wooden perches (栖息处) all over the place with small flaps where birds could hide seeds. The scientists put tiny probes into the chickadees’ brains and tracked activity in their memory areas. Each time a bird hid a seed under a flap, a special brain pattern appeared, like a barcode. Each bird had its own unique brain pattern for each time it hid a seed.
When the birds revisited these sites and recovered the hidden seeds, the same barcode-like pattern materialized again, as though all the information about each location and seed was linked to a unique brain pattern.
The researchers compared these memories to humans’ memories of specific events or personal experiences. They are essential to how humans define themselves and bind together moments in time, people, places and sensory information. But the mechanism for how this binding happens is still unclear.
Chettih says it’s difficult to know exactly when an animal is forming a memory. However, the fact that this seed-hiding behavior follows a clear pattern may help scientists to understand how the brain makes and stores memories.
12. What can we know about the chickadees from paragraph 1?
A. They are able to find their hidden food. B. They are good at remembering barcodes.
C. They have better memories than humans. D. They lack the hippocampi in their brains.
13. Which aspect of the research does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. Its function. B. Its application. C. Its theory. D. Its process.
14. What does the underlined word “materialized” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Changed. B. Appeared. C. Decreased. D. Failed.
15. What does the author express in the last paragraph?
A. The secret of chickadees’ memories.
B. The difficulty in doing the research.
C. The need to further research birds’ memories.
D. The meaning of studying the seed-hiding behavior.
【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. D
根据第一段中“They store food in many different locations in the wild, and then return to these places when other food sources are low. (它们在野外许多不同的地方储存食物,然后在其他食物来源匮乏时回到这些地方)”可知,黑顶山雀能够找到它们藏起来的食物。故选A项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中“To observe this, Chettih built a special area with feeders full of sunflower seeds in the corners. He put wooden perches all over the place with small flaps where birds could hide seeds. The scientists put tiny probes into the chickadees’ brains and tracked activity in their memory areas. (为了观察这一现象,切蒂赫建造了一个特殊区域,角落放着装满向日葵种子的喂食器。他在各处放置了带有小翻盖的木质栖息处,鸟儿可以在那里藏种子。科学家们将微小的探针插入山雀的大脑,追踪它们记忆区域的活动)”可知,这一段主要讲述了研究的过程。故选D项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“Each time a bird hid a seed under a flap, a special brain pattern appeared, like a barcode. (每次鸟儿把种子藏在翻盖下时,就会出现一种特殊的大脑图案,就像条形码一样)”可知,鸟儿藏种子时大脑中会出现特殊图案,就像条形码一样,用于记录。结合划线词所在句“When the birds revisited these sites and recovered the hidden seeds, the same barcode like pattern materialized again (当鸟儿再次回到这些地方并找回藏起来的种子时,同样的类似条形码的模式再次……)”
根据最后一段中“However, the fact that this seed hiding behavior follows a clear pattern may help scientists to understand how the brain makes and stores memories. (然而,这种藏种子行为遵循明确模式这一事实可能有助于科学家了解大脑如何形成和储存记忆)”可知,作者表达了研究黑顶山雀藏食行为的意义,即有助于科学家了解大脑如何形成和储存记忆。故选D项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Just at that moment, Luella’ family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw their shock and disbelief. Approaching Luella, I tightly held her hands and said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded, still puzzled by the shocking scene. My family volunteered to help clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees. To lift Luella’s spirits and give her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’ sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Determined to restore the beauty of the garden, I suggested we rebuild the garden, which Luella delightedly agreed. Carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the beginning of our friendship, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give, you may receive something unexpected in return.

The water garden: In 1893, Monet bought a neighbouring piece of land on the other side of the railway. He had the first small pond dug; later on the pond was enlarged to its present-day size. In this water garden, you will find the famous Japanese bridge covered with wisteria (紫藤).

D
They are essential to how humans define themselves and bind together moments in time people, places and sensory information. But the mechanism for how this binding happens is still unclear.
Chettih says it’s difficult to know exactly when an animal is forming a memory. However, the fact that this seed-hiding behavior follows a clear pattern may help scientists to understand how the brain makes and stores memories.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.

Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
