The 15-minute Break
Our school has made a great change in the inter-class break. It is longer, from 10 to 15 minutes.
The purpose is to give students more time to rest and do activities that can help us grow better. There are many different kinds of activities for us like basketball, volleyball, running, and jump rope. Many students are interested in these activities which are good for us. First, taking part in the physical activities can help us reduce stress so that we feel more energetic for the next class. Second, during these activities, we can make more friends and learn from each other.
In a word, the 15-minute inter-class break makes our school life more colorful and meaningful. We can really enjoy the break!

this was the moment to tell him everything.
“Can I trust you?” Mary asked.
“Yes—yes!” he whispered.
“Dickon is coming to see you tomorrow. And also … I … I found the door into the secret garden.”
Colin’s eyes grew bigger and bigger.
Mary went on, “Colin, we’re going to take you there!”
The next day, a strong servant (仆人) carried Colin downstairs and put him in his wheelchair. Dickon was
waiting for him outside. Dickon pushed the wheelchair slowly and carefully. Mary walked next to it. They went
across the lawn to the long road near the wall.
“This is where I walked up and down looking for the door,” whispered Mary. They walked a bit further then
Mary whispered again: “The robin flew over the wall here. And there,” she said, pointing under a big bush in the
flower bed, “is where I found the key”.
Then Dickon stopped pushing the chair.
“And look!” Mary moved the ivy branch (常春藤树枝). “Here is the door. Dickon, push him in—push him
in quickly!”
When they were inside the garden, Colin looked round and round. He saw the walls and the earth and the
trees with their new green leaves. In the grass under the trees there were flowers—gold and purple and white. The
trees were covered in pink and white flowers. The sun was warm on his face. Mary and Dickon looked at him. He
looked different. His face was pink, not white.
“Mary! Dickon! I'm going to get well!” Colin suddenly cried. “And I’m going to live forever and ever!”
Dickon pushed his wheelchair slowly round and round the garden. He often stopped to show Colin
something—green buds(嫩芽), a feather, an empty eggshell.
“I’m going to come back tomorrow, and the day after, and the day after,” said Colin.

Everyone may dream at night. Do you always believe your dream? Some dreams make us feel relaxed and
happy, while some dreams frighten us. Don’t you think so? I even had such an experience.
One day I noticed the brakes (刹车) on my car getting weaker. They still worked but it took longer for my
car to stop. I knew I needed new brakes, but I had many other things to do. So I didn’t take it seriously.
Then on Christmas Eve, I had an awful dream. I was driving my car on a bright, sunny day when suddenly a
truck appeared on the road in front of me. I pushed on my brakes but they didn’t work and I hit that truck. The
terrible dream woke me up at once and I made up my mind to change my brakes the next day. When the worker
took out the old ones, I noticed that they had worn thin.
One day, I was driving home with my daughter beside me and my two sons in the back seat. Suddenly, a
truck came from the other direction. It was running too fast and moved two feet over the center line. I hit my
brakes and led my car toward the side of the road. We were surprised that the huge truck missed us by only a foot.
It was too dangerous.
Later when I lay in my bed, I realized if I didn’t get my brakes changed, I couldn’t slow down fast enough.
My children and I may be hurt or killed. I closed my eyes and gave thanks for that dream.

56.What can you learn from the passage?

C.Behind bad luck comes good luck. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

Have you ever thought about this? When you sit down and begin to eat a tomato, suddenly, the tomato starts
to scream! Of course, this thing would never really happen. But a new study shows that plants make sounds when
they are in pain. Scientists in Israel has done the study. They use ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风 ) to
record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes.
Scientists listen to three groups of plants. The first two groups make sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The
third group only makes the sound once every hour. “When tomatoes are not in pain at all, they are very quiet”
Lilach Hadany from the study team tells readers. The highest sound humans can hear is about 16 kilohertz (干赫
兹). The plants sounds are too high for us to hear (about 40-80 kilohertz).
Scientists believe that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them
that the plant is in pain and not good for laying eggs on. When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sound
to choose which one to eat.
Scientists also listen to other plants such as wheat and corn. They also make more sounds when they are in

Gifts are a good way of showing how much you care about someone, especially during the festivals. 61
Luckily, picking the right gift can be a lot easier if you keep the following three tips in mind.
Know the person’s interests.
One of the worst things you can do is to give someone something he/she hates. It can hurt your friendship,
because the other person may think you don’t care about him/her at all. 62
So you can make a list of what your friends like. Then try to find gifts that meet those interests. If they love
music, you can give them CDs of their favourite singers’.
63
Gifts don’t have to be flashy (华而不实的) things. They can be something that is helpful in your friends’
daily life. So if you are looking for the right gift, you should find out what they need most.
64 Instead, listen carefully when they talk. For example, a friend may often say that he has no time
to replace his broken schoolbag, you can surprise him with a new one.
Think about giving an experience.
Gifts don’t have to be physical things. 65 Studies have shown that a person remembers an
experience more than physical things. If your friends are pop fans, a concert of their favourite pop stars must be a
surprise and an experience that they will never forget.
A.Give them something they really want.
B.Choose to celebrate with a hand-made gift.
C.Online shops can be a good place to buy a gift.
D.But sometimes it can be difficult to find a perfect gift.
E.That’s why you should learn about his/her interests first.
F.They can be special experiences that the person did not expect.
G.Since gifts should be a surprise, don’t ask the person what they need.

decided to bring books to her neighbors, instead, by turning a bus into a bookstore.

true! A mobile bookstore with orange bookshelves and wood floors appeared in the Bronx. The bookstore is
named Bronx Bound Books. Latanya stops it outside of markets, schools and parks.
Although the bookstore on wheels carries around 3,000 new and used books, it has more room than you
might expect! Latanya also makes sure that the books are of different kinds of characters so that all readers can see
themselves in the pages.
Latanva is trying her best to make more people read in the Bronx, and she’s just getting started. “I can’t

Mary went to see Colin the next morning. He looked sad and tired and his face was white. Mary knew that this was the moment to tell him everything.
Dickon was waiting for him outside. Dickon pushed the wheelchair slowly and carefully. Mary walked next to it. They went across the lawn to the long road near the wall.
“This is where I walked up and down looking for the door,” whispered Mary. They walked a bit further then Mary whispered again: “The robin flew over the wall here. And there,” she said, pointing under a big bush in the flower bed, “is where I found the key”.
Then Dickon stopped pushing the chair.
“And look!” Mary moved the ivy branch (常春藤树枝). “Here is the door. Dickon, push him in—push him in quickly!”
When they were inside the garden, Colin looked round and round. He saw the walls and the earth and the trees with their new green leaves. In the grass under the trees there were flowers—gold and purple and white. The trees were covered in pink and white flowers. The sun was warm on his face. Mary and Dickon looked at him. Everyone may dream at night. Do you always believe your dream? Some dreams make us feel relaxed and happy, while some dreams frighten us. Don’t you think so? I even had such an experience.
One day I noticed the brakes (刹车) on my car getting weaker. They still worked but it took longer for my car to stop. I knew I needed new brakes, but I had many other things to do. So I didn’t take it seriously.
Then on Christmas Eve, I had an awful dream. I was driving my car on a bright, sunny day when suddenly a truck appeared on the road in front of me. I pushed on my brakes but they didn’t work and I hit that truck. The terrible dream woke me up at once and I made up my mind to change my brakes the next day. When the worker took out the old ones, I noticed that they had worn thin.
One day, I was driving home with my daughter beside me and my two sons in the back seat. Suddenly, a truck came from the other direction. It was running too fast and moved two feet over the center line. I hit my brakes and led my car toward the side of the road.
53.The writer didn’t change his brakes at first because he ________.

C.Behind bad luck comes good luck. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.

Have you ever thought about this? When you sit down and begin to eat a tomato, suddenly, the tomato starts to scream! Of course, this thing would never really happen. But a new study shows that plants make sounds when they are in pain. Scientists in Israel has done the study. They use ultrasonic microphones (超声波麦克风) to record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes.
Scientists listen to three groups of plants. The first two groups make sounds 30 to 50 times every hour. The third group only makes the sound once every hour. “When tomatoes are not in pain at all, they are very quiet” Lilach Hadany from the study team tells readers. The highest sound humans can hear is about 16 kilohertz (干赫兹). The plants sounds are too high for us to hear (about 40-80 kilohertz).
Scientists believe that animals and insects may listen to the sounds. For example, the sound can tell them that the plant is in pain and not good for laying eggs on. When an animal wants to eat plants, it can also use sound to choose which one to eat.
Scientists also listen to other plants such as wheat and corn. They also make more sounds when they are in pain. Scientists say the study can help farmers in the future. They can better take care of the crops by “hearing” how plants feel.
57.Tomatoes may make sounds more often if we _________.
A.put them in the sun B.water them when needed
C.cut off parts of them D.plant them at the right time
58.Paragraph 3 talks about _________.
A.where scientists do the study B.why plants make sounds

59.The study can help farmers _________.

Gifts are a good way of showing how much you care about someone, especially during the festivals. 61 Luckily, picking the right gift can be a lot easier if you keep the following three tips in mind.
Know the person’s interests.
One of the worst things you can do is to give someone something he/she hates. It can hurt your friendship, because the other person may think you don’t care about him/her at all. 62
So you can make a list of what your friends like. Then try to find gifts that meet those interests. If they love music, you can give them CDs of their favourite singers’.
63
Gifts don’t have to be flashy (华而不实的) things. They can be something that is helpful in your friends’ daily life. So if you are looking for the right gift, you should find out what they need most.
64 Instead, listen carefully when they talk. For example, a friend may often say that he has no time to replace his broken schoolbag, you can surprise him with a new one.
Think about giving an experience.
Gifts don’t have to be physical things. 65 Studies have shown that a person remembers an experience more than physical things. If your friends are pop fans, a concert of their favourite pop stars must be a surprise and an experience that they will never forget.

Although the bookstore on wheels carries around 3,000 new and used books, it has more room than you might expect! Latanya also makes sure that the books are of different kinds of characters so that all readers can see themselves in the pages.

Although the bookstore on wheels carries around 3,000 new and used books, it has more room than you might expect! Latanya also makes sure that the books are of different kinds of characters so that all readers can see themselves in the pages.

A.Give them something they really want.
B.Choose to celebrate with a hand-made gift.
C.Online shops can be a good place to buy a gift.
D.But sometimes it can be difficult to find a perfect gift.
E.That’s why you should learn about his/her interests first.
