Tom, a 15-year-old boy, and his mother Marissa didn’t have much money, living daily with just enough to eat three meals and pay the bills.
Without his mother knowing, Tom had been saving up his pocket money for months to buy her a birthday present. He had collected a total of $25.
As a cleaner at a nearby park, Marissa never took a bus, choosing to walk to and from work to save money. One day, Tom noticed that her mother came home wet to the skin. She told him her umbrella broke because of the strong wind and that she wanted to get home in time to have dinner with him.
The following day, his mother woke up with a fever. "Mom, don’t get up from bed," Tom told her."I’ll attend to you today. Here is your medicine," he said, handing it to her with a glass of water. After Marissa took the medicine, Tom walked to the nearby supermarket to buy something to cook a hot bowl of soup for his mother.
It occurred to him that his mother’s birthday was in a couple of days, so he wanted to get his mother an umbrella first and spend the rest of his money on food.
"What is your strongest umbrella here, sir?" he asked the shop assistant."I am looking for something that doesn’t break when hit by the wind and something that will last for years." The man showed Tom some umbrellas in different colors and Tom chose a purple one, which was his mother’s favorite color. It was $22. After checking out, Tom couldn’t help smiling after being able to use his $25 to buy everything he needed. He even had some money to spare!
While Tom was walking back home, it suddenly started to pour. He was running toward a nearby bus stop to seek shelter when he noticed an old lady walking slowly while everyone around her was running toward sheltered areas. Without hesitation, he took the umbrella out of his bag. The old woman was surprised to feel that the rain stopped suddenly.

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was to be an athlete. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me, “Dreams are priceless.” However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $12.25 per hour. Compared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect(前景) of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn't dare to tell my coach. I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, “If you make your bed, you have to lie in it.” I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth his disappointment.

Tom arrived home and his mother asked why he had been out for so long. Tom briefed her on his experience of his way home without speaking of the umbrella. "That's my boy," beamed his mother with a proud smile broadening. Tom giggled shyly, putting a cold towel on his mother's forehead. Several days later, when his mother's birthday arrived,
Tom excitedly gave his mother the present box. "Happy birthday, Mom!" exclaimed Tom, his eyes sparkling with a thrill. Marissa opened the gift and was surprised to see the umbrella inside. Tears welled up in her eyes and she hugged Tom tightly.

One possible version:
I gathered my courage and knocked at his door. The moment he heard me out, his face turned purple immediately. He glared at me like a bull, “You have your whole life to work,” he said, “but your playing days are limited. You can't afford to waste them.” I stood before him with my head down. “How much will you be paid, son?” he demanded. “$12.25 per hour.” “Well,” he shrugged. “Is $12.25 an hour the price of a dream?”
That question reminded me what my coach used to say. Yes, dreams are priceless. It's stupid to earn pocket money at the expense of my dream. I held my head high and said firmly, “Sorry, Mr. Jarvis. I know what to do next.” My coach smiled with great satisfaction. That summer I dedicated myself to baseball training. And one year later, I obtained a baseball scholarship to the university. I knew I would soon buy my mom a house. Thankfully, I made a right choice. Without Mr. Jarvis, I would never know I could achieve a dream.
