When I was in elementary school we had an annual sports day. We girls could take part in many activities like hopscotch, jump rope, tether ball, and dodgeball, but we were not allowed to do the high jump. Only boys were allowed to do it. But I really wanted to do the high jump. So I went to the coach in the hope of getting permission."Girls don’t do the high jump," the coach said. "Girls can do all these other things." He excitedly described how much fun other things were. I was disappointed. In fact, I’d been doing the high jump in the backyard with my brothers for years. Although I was a girl, I did it quite well. My brothers could hardly beat me. Whenever my back crossed the bar, I felt extremely wonderful. I went home and told my mother what the coach had said. My mother, a thin, small woman only four feet, eleven inches tall, said, "I think we should visit the headmaster." "Visit the headmaster?" I was worried. Would I get into trouble? Would my mother and I be crossing boundaries we shouldn’t cross? Anyway we did go to Mr. White’s office. "Mr. White, Linda wants to do the high jump," my mother said. "Mrs. Martinez, you don’t understand. This is the tradition of our annual sports day," he said."But Mr. White, I don’t know why girls can’t do it," my mother said. The headmaster couldn’t find any rules that said girls couldn’t do the high jump. He said at last that he would reply later. When we got home, my mom told me something I would always remember: This wasn’t just about me; maybe other girls also wanted to do this. A week passed, but we still didn’t get the headmaster’s reply. So we walked over to the school again. "Mr. White, please. I ask you this not only for Linda. Let’s just see how it works," my mother said. Mr. White agreed at last. Paragraph 1: When the big day came, I stood on the field of the high jump competition.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Paragraph 2: Surprisingly, some of the cheers were from boys! 经过沟通,校长最终同意作者参加跳高比赛…… who Linda(the author),my mother(Mrs. Martinez), the coach, the headmaster(Mr. White) when Before the annual sports day where In the school why When the author was in elementary school, the girls were not allowed to do the high jump. what The author fought for the chance to allow girls to participate in the high jump during the annual sports day and ultimately got permission from the school’s principal. how The author attempted to achieve her goal by: 1.Communicating with the coach to ask permission, but was refused. 2.Seeking support from her mother, who accompanied her on a visit to the principal. They got no reply. 3.Revisiting the school a week later to follow up the principal’s decision and continuing striving for the  opportunity. 4.Successfully persuading the principal to allow her to participate in the high jump. Positive 1. Paragraph 1: When the big day came, I stood on the field of the high jump competition. I was the only girl that took part in the high jump, which made me feel a little embarrassed. But when I saw the bar I had been longing for, all the awkwardness disappeared. I was the last to jump. I saw some boys failed, while some jumped over at a good height, but not higher than my ever record. Finally, it was my turn. I took a deep breath, ran up, took off, and crossed over! As it turned out, I won the high jump contest. I felt happy. Paragraph 2: Surprisingly, some of the cheers were from boys! The boys who had laughed at me for participating in the high jump now congratulated me. The girls ran over and hugged me. I instantly became the center of attention. The headmaster personally presented me with an award. More importantly. the school allowed girls to take part in the high jump competitions. My mother was right it wasn't just about me. I jumped not only over the bar, but also over the boundary of prejudice ( ⭐写作拓展⭐ ) ( 变式提升训练 ) 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。 John was crazy about playing basketball. Every day after school, he would spend much time practicing basketball skills. Sometimes, he didn’t go back home until sunset(日落), which made his mother extremely angry. One day, as he was given a chance to watch a basketball game, he dreamed about being a member of the college basketball team the next year. On the way, he was delighted secretly. He thought no one in the world was luckier than him. Suddenly, a car hit him. What a terrible experience! It seemed like a bad dream. John woke up in a hospital room. He was frightened to death. He realized that he couldn’t move both of his legs. At that time, the doctor came in. When the doctor told him that both his legs were broken and he had to sit in the wheelchair for the time being, he knew his college basketball dream was over. He was really depressed. John followed what the doctors had told him, but it did not work entirely. When he left the hospital, John was sent to a health recovery center. He had never heard of this center before, but it was not far away from his house. Although he felt unwilling to go there, he had no choice but to accept the fact. A week later, he arrived there unhappily. The first person he met was Sunny Chen, who was so kind and friendly that he warmly welcomed John. Sunny’s legs were badly hurt in a skating accident. He told John that he would help him recover soon. Though Sunny couldn’t move his legs, he became the coach of a basketball team called the Suns. After a period of recovery training, John felt his legs were all right. So Sunny invited him to join in the game where Sunny guided the team in his wheelchair. John played badly, but for the first time since the accident, he stopped feeling sorry for himself. John was glad that his dream of being a member of a basketball team came true.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Sunny saw all John did, lost in thought.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       $$ Unit 2 Sports and Fitness 比赛结果 winner获胜者; loser失败者; win first/second place 获得第一/二名; defeat/beat 打败; a close game 一场势均力敌的比赛; break the record 打破纪录; become the pride of the nation 成为国家的骄傲; bring glory for the country 为国家带来荣誉; set a new world record 创造一项新的世界纪录 ( 句型积累 ) 1.开头:介绍最喜欢的运动 ①I have chosen to include running in my daily routine. ②I took part in the 100-meter race, which was my favorite. ③When it comes to sports, some believe basketball is the most popular one while others like football better. 2.主体:说明喜欢的原因 ①Running provides a sense of freedom and stress relief. ②Running offers a perfect way of exercise, which is essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind. ③Not only does football give me a lot of happiness, but it also brings me changes. 3.结尾:说明该运动的好处 ①In addition to its physical benefits, swimming is also an effective way to relax. ②Now I feel more energetic and regular exercise has given me a sense of accomplishment and pride. ③Taking account of all these factors, we may reach the conclusion that doing physical exercise is very essential to us. ( ⭐参考范文⭐ ) Last Saturday, I participated in the skipping competition held by our class. John was glad that his dream of being a member of a basketball team came true. Basketball was like medicine for him. John was much better and more confident than before. John practised hard to improve himself. He was always the first to come to the court, and the last to go back home. Although it was not easy for him to play and he did badly at first, he never thought about giving up. He was a boy with a strong mind. Sunny saw all John did, lost in thought. He could not help praising John for his courage and love for basketball. There are many ups and downs in life. No one knows what will happen. However, as long as there is love and hope in our heart, nothing can stop us from achieving what we desire. As a matter of fact, what we should do is hold on to the dreams and fight to the end. $$
