Do you know about processed foods (加工食品)? Go into any food store, and you’ll see lots of processed foods. Processed foods are foods that have been changed from their natural (天然的) states. There are kinds of processed foods, for example, frozen fruit and vegetables, canned (罐装的) soup and smoked meat.
The history of processed foods is quite long, going back to thousands of years ago. People began to make them because of the need to keep food for a long time. In the 1950s, there were more and more families where the couples (夫妇) both worked. So processed foods became a good time-saver and got popular. Because of work, many families didn’t have time to cook meals at home. So processed foods were convenient (方便的) for them.
Nowadays, processed foods provide (提供) convenience for many busy families. More and more foods come out of plastic bags, boxes or something else. Usually, the shelf-life of unopened canned foods is about 18 months. Frozen processed foods can be stored for 6—12 months under proper conditions and processed foods in plastic bags or boxes usually have a shelf-life of 1—14 days depending on the ingredients.
While processed foods offer convenience, some of them contain (包含) too much sugar, salt and fat. Eating too much of them may lead to weight increase, heart problems and other health risks.
However, some processed foods are healthy. Milk is a kind of processed foods that many people like. Fruit or vegetable juice can also be healthy unless (除非) it has been added sugar. Frozen vegetables still keep their nutrients (营养物). People can enjoy eating them all year round.
Not all processed foods are unhealthy. Carefully read food labels before buying. From them, we can know about the foods’ ingredients, shelf life and other information. Knowing these will help us eat healthy foods while still enjoying the convenience.

11. Which food is natural food?

12. Why were processed foods popular in 1950s? Because processed foods ________.

“Mm,” said Holmes. “So why did Straker take this knife? It’s no good for fighting.”
“His wife said it was in the bedroom for some days,” said Inspector Gregory. “Perhaps he just took it because it was there on the table.”
“Perhaps,” said Holmes. “What about these papers?”
“One is a letter from Mr Ross, the others are bills,” the inspector said. “Three of them are bills for the horse’s food, and this one is a bill from a dress-maker in London, for a Mr William Darbyshire.
