Most Famous Libraries in the World
Trinity College Library
Designed by Thomas Burgh, the library is the largest in Ireland. Construction on the Long Room, the library’s 65-meter-long main hall, began in 1712 and lasted 20 years. The original structure only had books on the lower level, but when the library’s shelves were filled in the 1850s, the ceiling was raised to accommodate even more books. Today the Long Room holds 200,000 of the library’s oldest books.
Stuttgart City Library
Opened in 2011, the German library is a splendid light-gray cube consisting of glass blocks designed by Eun Young Yi. Inside it, you’ll find an airy central room, above which sits a multi-story stepped reading room lined with bookshelves. The library towers over the nearby buildings.
Library of Parliament
Taking the form of a Victorian Gothic chapter house complete with 16 flying buttresses, the 1876 Library of Parliament is one of Canada’s prized architectural treasures — it’s on the ten-dollar bill. Architects Thomas Fuller and Chilion Jones took inspiration from the British Museum Reading Room for the structure, lining the central hall with delicate wood shelves and wood carvings.
Rampur Raza Library
Founded in the late 18th century, the Indian library is home to a massive collection of Islamic and Asian texts and objects. The pink structure that houses the collection today was built in 1904 by Nawab Hamid Ali Khan as a mansion of Indo-European style, The Rampur Raza Library was later shifted to this grand building in 1957.
1. Of the following libraries, which is the oldest?
A. Trinity College Library. B. Library of Parliament.
C. Stuttgart City Library. D. Rampur Raza Library.
2. Who designed the library appearing on the ten-dollar bill?

It is easy for us to know the difference between our friends and our enemies. But can other animals do the same? Elephants can! They can use their sense of vision and smell to tell the difference between people who pose a threat and those who do not.
In Kenya, researchers find that elephants react differently to clothing worn by men of the Maasai and Kamba ethnic groups. Young Maasai men spear (刺) animals and thus pose a threat to elephants; Kamba men are mainly farmers and are not a danger to elephants.
In an experiment conducted by animal scientists, elephants were first presented with clean clothing or clothing that had been worn for five days by either a Maasai or a Kamba man. When the elephants noticed the smell of clothing worn by a Maasai man, they moved away from the smell faster and took longer to relax than when they noticed the smells of either clothing worn by Kamba men or clothing that had not been worn at all.
Clothing color also plays a role. In the same study, when the elephants saw red clothing not worn before, they reacted angrily, as red is typically worn by Maasai men. Rather than running away as they did with the smell, the elephants acted aggressively toward the red clothing.
The researchers believe that the elephants’ emotional reactions are due to their different senses of the smells and the sights. Smelling a potential danger means that a threat is nearby and the best thing to do is run away and hide. Seeing a potential threat without its smell means that risk is low. Therefore, instead of showing fear and running away, the elephants express their anger and become aggressive.
4. What character does the author want to express about elephants
A. Clever. B. Friendly. C. Dangerous. D. Naughty.
5. Which of the following is the most dangerous sign for elephants?
A. The color of Kamba men’s clothes. B. The smell of Kamba men’s clothes.
C. The smell of Maasai men’s clothes. D. The red clothes not worn before.
6. What can be inferred about the elephants behavior from this passage?
A. Elephants are more intelligent than other animals.
B. Elephants learn from their experience.
C. Elephants have sharper sense of smell than sight.
D. Elephants tend to attack rather than escape when in danger.
7. In-which magazine will the passage be found most probably?
A. Newsweek. B. Nature. C. Fashion. D. Business Weekly.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. B

C
A few years ago, you went on a vacation with friends, creating lasting memories — walking along the beach, swimming in the sea, and enjoying breathtaking sunsets. However, the trip wasn’t all smooth sailing: long drives, food issues, and unpredictable weather. Yet, over time, you tend to remember the beautiful moments while the inconveniences fade. This is known as rosy retrospection, a cognitive bias (认知偏见) where people recall past experiences more positively than they felt during the actual event.
The phenomenon can be understood as the complex interaction of cognitive mechanisms that shape our memory processes. When recalling memories, our brains tend to focus on positive details and downplay negative aspects, which helps maintain emotional well-being. Nostalgia (怀旧) also plays a significant role, as it arouses feelings of warmth and belonging, leading us to view the past more positively. Additionally, our current emotional state and self-enhancement bias can influence how we remember past events, making them seem more favorable.
While some individuals who focus more on negative experiences may be at a higher risk of mood disorders such as depression, rosy retrospection can elevate our moods, increase life satisfaction, and even help us cope with difficult present circumstances by providing a sense of continuity and positive self-identity (自我认同).
However, rosy retrospection occasionally creates an unrealistic view of the past, which can lead people to make decisions that are not based on reality but rather on their idealized memories. It’s one of the reasons why we might repeatedly return to unhealthy relationships. The longer the time that has passed since the event, the more likely we are to let the good memories outweigh the bad memories and perhaps even forgive unforgivable behavior. Understanding and acknowledging this cognitive bias can be crucial for making accurate and beneficial decisions.
8. How do people with rosy retrospection typically behave?
A. They forget negative moments easily.
B. They recall breathtaking details repeatedly.
C. They remember adventurous trips more clearly.
D. They view previous experiences more positively.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The meaning of rosy retrospection.
B. The reasons for rosy retrospection.
C. The role of nostalgia in shaping memories.
D. The methods of maintaining emotional well-being.
10. What does the underlined word “elevate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Promote. B. Expose. C. Assess. D. Ignore.
11. What is a potential negative effect of rosy retrospection?
A. It gives rise to incorrect judgments.
B. It leads to a constant state of depression.
C. It makes people miss out on opportunities.
D. It causes people to be unwilling to face reality.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. A
根据文章第一段“This is known as rosy retrospection, a cognitive bias (认知偏见) where people recall past experiences more positively than they felt during the actual event.(这被称为玫瑰色回忆效应,是一种认知偏见,在这种情况下,人们回忆过去的经历时比实际经历时更加积极)”可知,产生玫瑰色回忆效应的人通常会更积极地看待以前的经历,故选D项。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“The phenomenon can be understood as the complex interaction of cognitive mechanisms that shape our memory processes.(这种现象可以被理解为塑造我们记忆过程的认知机制的复杂相互作用)”、“When recalling memories, our brains tend to focus on positive details and downplay negative aspects, which helps maintain emotional well-being. Nostalgia (怀旧) also plays a significant role, as it arouses feelings of warmth and belonging, leading us to view the past more positively.( 回忆往事时,大脑往往会聚焦于积极细节,淡化负面因素,这有助于保持情绪健康。
根据第三段“While some individuals who focus more on negative experiences may be at a higher risk of mood disorders such as depression, rosy retrospection can elevate our moods, increase life satisfaction, and even help us cope with difficult present circumstances by providing a sense of continuity and positive self-identity (自我认同)( 虽然一些更多关注负面经历的人可能患抑郁等情绪障碍的风险更高,但玫瑰色回忆效应可以elevate我们的情绪,提高生活满意度,甚至通过提供一种连续性和积极的自我认同感来帮助我们应对当前的困难处境)”可知,前半句提到那些更多关注负面经历的人患情绪障碍(如抑郁)的风险更高,while表示对比转折,可推理出后半句玫瑰色回忆效应应该是能带来积极的影响,“elevate our moods”与“increase life satisfaction(提高生活满意度)”并列,可推测“elevate”意思是“提升、促进”,与“Promote(促进)”意思相近,故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“However, rosy retrospection occasionally creates an unrealistic view of the past, which can lead people to make decisions that are not based on reality but rather on their idealized memories.(然而,玫瑰色回忆效应偶尔会对过去产生不切实际看法,这可能会导致人们做出的决定不是基于现实,而是基于他们理想化的记忆)”可知,玫瑰色回忆效应的一个潜在负面影响是它会导致不正确的判断,故选A项。
D
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), along with Chinese Kungfu and Peking Opera, is one of China’s cultural symbols recognized worldwide. It is a gem of Chinese civilization, and it has also made great contributions to world civilization by improving people’s health and promoting social progress.
There used to be a debate in China about whether TCM or Western medicine was better, and arguments can still be heard today. But actually, TCM and western medicine are two different medical theoretical systems that can not replace each other. In some aspects such as surgery, Western medicine is better than TCM, but in other areas, such as recovery after surgery and treatment of chronic (慢性的) diseases, TCM is more effective. This is why some Chinese hospitals provide both TCM and Western medicine treatments. A combination of both has been accepted by many Chinese people as the most effective treatment.
Today promoting and innovating TCM has become a consensus (共识) in Chinese society. The Chinese government has formulated policies to support the development and innovation of TCM, with a view to establishing a Chinese healthcare development model paying equal attention to both.
The supportive policies of the Chinese Government will focus on three aspects. The first is the strengthening of TCM services in medical institutions. The second is to apply Internet technology to TCM management, including setting up a database containing TCM electronic medical records and prescriptions (处方). The third is to give better play to the advantages of TCM, especially acupuncture (针灸) and naprapathy (推拿). The function of TCM in disease prevention and recovery will also be enhanced.
As long as TCM keeps its core strengths and respects the rules of development and innovation, it will surely be able to maintain its vitality and bring more benefits to people in China and the world.
12. What advantage does Western medicine have over TCM?
A. It is a symbol of national civilization. B. It is more successful in recovery after surgery.
C. It is more effective in surgery. D. It is more effective in treating chronic diseases.
13. According to paragraph 4, which of the following aspects is NOT included in the Chinese government supports for TCM?
A. It calls on the public to support TCM.
B. It combines Internet Technology with TCM.
C. It makes better use of the advantages of TCM .
D. It increases TCM services in hospitals and medical centers.
14. What can be inferred about the author’s opinion on TCM?
A. Supportive. B. Critical.
C. Unclear. D. Skeptical.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. TCM Beats Western Medicine. B. Chinese Government Promotes TCM.
C. TCM is One of China's Cultural Symbols. D. TCM Breaks New Ground.
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. A 15. D

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The supportive policies of the Chinese Government will focus on three aspects. The function of TCM in disease prevention and recovery will also be enhanced.(中国政府的支持政策将集中在三个方面。第一是加强医疗机构的中医服务。第二是将互联网技术应用于中医管理,包括建立一个包含中医电子病历和处方的数据库。第三是更好地发挥中医的优势,特别是针灸和推拿。中医在疾病预防和康复方面的作用也将得到加强。)”可知,中国政府对中医的支持包括加强医疗机构的中医服务(对应D选项)、将互联网技术与中医结合(对应B选项)、更好地利用中医的优势(对应C选项),而A选项It calls on the public to support TCM.(它号召公众支持中医)在文中未提及。故选A。

6 What can be inferred about the elephants behavior from this passage?
A Elephants are more intelligent than other animals.
Today, promoting and innovating TCM has become a consensus (共识) in Chinese society.
