In January, 2021, the life of the 17-year-old high school student Mason Branstator took an unexpected turn. Skiing down a hill he had been on countless times, he hit a jump too fast. When waking up in the intensive care unit, he learned from the doctor he was left with a severely broken back, which would significantly impact his lower body functions.
Despite being told that he might never walk again, Mason’s unbending optimism and determination have fueled his extraordinary journey of recovery and self-discovery. Following his accident, Mason entered a health recovery center at Craig Hospital, Colorado. There he was surrounded by others on similar paths, which, coupled with his positive outlook, played a crucial role in his recovery. Mason’s journey was not just about regaining physical strength but also about overcoming mental barriers. Through willpower, he began to walk again, proving that the impossible could be made possible.
Mason’s newfound viewpoint on life led him to try activities that he once thought were beyond his reach. From surfing and rock climbing to competing in triathlons, he rediscovered parts of himself. He documented his adventures online, which ended up as a source of inspiration for millions worldwide.
“It all started with me just wanting to find more people like me I could connect with and talk through all the hard things I was going through” said Mason. “And it turned into what inspired millions of people around the world, an incredible thing—I didn’t even intend for it to.”
Mason’s story strikes the heartstrings of people, not merely for the physical goals he has achieved but for the message of hope and determination he represents. He challenges what it means to live with a disability and redefines the boundaries of what is possible, inspiring millions to do the same. Alongside the communities he has built online, and the one he already has—his supportive family, he has no intention of slowing down.

A. To appeal for more attention. B. To showcase his survival skills.

A. Practice makes perfect. B. Better late than never.

Jumbo Supermarket is tackling shoplifting by laying hands on new technology: Artificial .Intelligence (AI). Smart cameras, equipped with software from French company Veesion, detect questionable behaviour and help report thieving from shops. With 100 million euros lost to shoplifters last year, Jumbo is starting a trial in its own shops this week.
The smart AI technology uses complicated software connected to the existing cameras and security network through the Internet, It then automatically monitors all the cameras at the same time for potential shopping activity. The technology is not faultless, but it significantly increases the chances of being caught. When a customer puts a product in his pocket or bag, the smart camera notices and reports it. This ensures that shoplifters can be caught in the act.
At Jumbo’s supermarket in Hengelo, Netherlands, 47 cameras have been fitted. AI is also being applied at other Jumbo locations. The cameras are strategically placed to identify questionable behaviour as effectively as possible. The system doesn’t actually label people as thieves; rather, it reminds the staff to check on those people as they might steal things. Sometimes the system raises an unjustified alarm. Nevertheless, it has proved a valuable tool for staff.
More than 110 supermarkets in the Netherlands have already used Veesion’s technology. According to the Personal Data Authority, supermarkets are allowed to use such technologies, provided they can properly justify why it is necessary.
The use of AI in stores is not just limited to stealing prevention. Globally, various AI. technologies are being used to improve the shopping experience and take full advantage of business processes. Also, shops use them for customized marketing. Michaels Stores, for example, a shop selling handmade goods, uses AI to tailor its advertising to each customer, which makes them feel more engaged and more likely to receive special offers that suit them. The company has created a system that helps create advertising copy and understand s which messages work best for different types of customers.
28. On getting an alarm from the system, what should shop staff do?
A. Arrest the suspect. B. Find out the truth.
C. Make an emergency call. D. Preserve photographic evidence.
29. On what condition is Veesion’s technology permitted in supermarkets?
A. They can prove it reasonable to use. B. They stop reporting thieving to the police.
C. They can indicate it isn’t meant for thieves. D. They’ve suffered massive shopping losses.
30. What does the underlined word “tailor” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Equalize. B. Promise. C. Personalize. D. Teach.
31. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. AI: End of Stealing B. Benefits and Drawbacks of AI
C. Can AI Dominate Us? D. Jumbo Uses AI to Fight Shoplifting

Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare(噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched.
Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored.
While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undeniably transformed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided navigation. Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp decline in spacial memory and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort.
That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better outcomes. Research shows that mild stress can enhance adaptability. Neuroscience(神经科学) reveals that neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to form new connections—is enhanced through challenging experiences. This adaptability is crucial for developing resilience, (抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort.
But this doesn't mean we should reject comfort entirely; it's to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as “microdosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we've buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck? Choosing discomfort isn't easy, but sometimes, it's worth it.
32. What does the underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Possible to change. B. Certain to function.
C. Unlikely to be settled. D. Unable to be accepted.
33 What may digital conveniences cause according to the text?
A. The fast but worthless relief. B. The meaningful engagement.
C. The loss of thinking capacity. D. The lack of necessary comfort.
34. Which is a real-life application of “microdosing hardship”?
A. Taking the stairs instead of the lift. B. Ordering take-out food after work.
C. Exploring a new city by using GPS. D. Writing an email using voice-to-text.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. GPS: the invisible cost of convenience B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage
C. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilience D. Smartphones: barriers to human progress

The boiling hot sun beamed onto us as we walked out for the state-cup finals. The mix of excitement and nervousness created tension in the air as everyone walked out onto the football field. I could feel my heart pounding everywhere in my body as both teams lined up.
Starting midfield, like always. 90-minute game, like always. But this was the most extraordinary stage we’ve ever played on. All parents of us were invited to watch the match. As we got ready for kickoff, fear took over my body. Coach says confidence is the biggest part of the game, but for me, it’s my biggest enemy.
My thoughts were interrupted as the high-pitched whistle stabbed my ears, and the game began. The ball came straight to me. I drove forward, slipped around a defender (后卫), and lost it. On the very next play, I gave it straight away again. I could feel my confidence just seeping away. I told myself I wouldn’t lose it again.
“Come on, Aidan, keep the ball!” shouted Griffin, my teammate. It wasn’t mean or anything. We’ve known each other for years and played together for a long time. But it was not helping. I just played it safe next time and passed it back. Barely even on target, I was losing it. I could feel our coach, Caden’s eyes burning into the back of my head.
“Aidan, stay out wide on the start and get up that field. You’ve done it before, it’s coming to you on this kickoff. Use your speed.” once again shouted Griffin. But I didn’t feel fast enough. I felt like there were rocks tied to my ankles when I ran.
The whistle blew twice for halftime. The score was still 0-0. It was a bad game on our part, sun peeked through my hair into my eyes. My mouth was as dry as a desert.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按下列格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Are you OK?” Griffin passed me a bottle of water.

Of the 300-odd students at the school, more than 100 are taking Chinese classes. Mananne Krutsch started to learn Chinese when she was 2. Her parents encouraged her to do it because they thought it may give her more work opportunities when she grows up. “But I am still learning Chinese, because I like my teacher and classmates, and I like Chinese culture,” says Mananne, now 13. Miriam Mitchell, 12, started to learn Chinese when she was a first-grader. “My parents want me to have more work opportunities,” says Miriam, adding that her family is planning a trip to China next year. Lily Rabb, 14, chose to learn Chinese in 2011. She wants to be a fashion designer, and she’s interested in Chinese fashion. “Initially, interest came from parents of Chinese origin, but then non-Chinese Americans who are doing business with China joined in,” says the school principal Roderick Shaw. Ji Xiang has worked at the school for 11 years. “Most of the students who take Chinese class at the school are from native American households,” she says. “They may initially take up studying Chinese as another language, or a gateway to future opportunities.
“It all started with me just wanting to find more people like me I could connect with and talk through all the hard things I was going through,” said Mason. “And it turned into what inspired millions of people around the world, an incredible thing—I didn’t even intend for it to.”
Mason’s story strikes the heartstrings of people, not merely for the physical goals he has achieved but for the message of hope and determination he represents.

33. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text?
【答案】32. D 33. C 34. A 35. C

词句猜测题。根据第一段中“Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare(噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched.(想象一下,有一天早上醒来,发现你的智能手机不见了。你再也不能用它导航去上班,点咖啡,或者和朋友联系了。对我们大多数人来说,这是一场噩梦。但这并不_____)”可知,这里的语境是假设智能手机突然消失的情景虽然令人不安,但它不应该是不能被接受的。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored. While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills.(这一切都是因为我们越来越依赖社交媒体和智能技术,这些技术旨在提供快速的解脱,但往往以牺牲深刻而有意义的参与为代价,这可能会进一步导致我们失去一些容易被忽视的东西。虽然这些便利提供了短期的解脱,但它们可能会削弱我们的思维能力)”可知,数字便利可能导致思考能力的下降。故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Think of it as “microdosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand.(把它想象成“微量困难”——一系列小的、可以管理的困难,这些困难能让我们的心理和情绪肌肉保持强壮,比如用笔写字,或者用手洗碗)”可知,采取“微量困难”的实际行动是做一些小的、可以管理的困难的事情,A选项“爬楼梯而不是乘电梯”符合“微量困难”的含义。故选A。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第二段中“Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious.(尽管我们比以往任何时候都更加数字化地联系在一起,但我们却更加孤独和焦虑)”、第三段中“While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills.(虽然这些便利提供了短期的解脱,但它们可能会削弱我们的思维能力)”以及第四段中“That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us.(这就是问题所在:我们避免的不适往往正是让我们变得坚强的东西)”可知,文章主要讲述了现代生活中人们过于依赖智能手机和各种智能技术,造成了一些不良后果,如焦虑、抑郁、思维能力下降等。作者认为,我们应该适当减少对这些便利的依赖,通过面对一些“微小的不便”来增强自己的抗逆力,C选项“不适感:韧性的隐藏来源”最符合文章主旨。故选C。

【36题详解】
根据前文“If you’re in a position where you want to achieve your dreams, but you’ve lost your way, you’re not alone.(如果你想实现自己的梦想,但却迷失了方向,那么你并不孤单)”可知,E项“There are plenty of people who give up on dreams in the process.(有很多人在这个过程中放弃了梦想)”是对前文的进一步说明,承接上文说的并不孤单,并引出下文“If you’d like to give yourself another chance, there are a few key considerations you’ll want to make.(如果你想再给自己一次机会,你需要考虑一些关键因素)”。故选E项。
【37题详解】
设空位于段尾,是对前文的总结,根据前文“If you’re prone (倾向) to negativity, it’s not uncommon. It’s easy for people to pick up on negativity and spread it. Be very intentional about the development of a positive mindset. Whether you choose to watch motivational films, or read inspirational books, work on developing a positive mindset.(如果你倾向于消极,这并不罕见。人们很容易接受并传播消极情绪。要有意识地培养积极的心态。无论你是选择看励志电影,还是阅读励志书籍,都要努力培养积极的心态)”可知,本段讲述了积极的心态对实现梦想的重要性,所以G项“You’re more likely to achieve your dreams when you’re positive through challenges.(当你积极面对挑战时,你更有可能实现你的梦想)”符合文意,是对前文的总结。故选G项。
【38题详解】
根据前文“When you’re looking to fulfill a dream, the environment is so critical. Pay attention to the people within your environment. If your friends wake up late, hang out a lot and avoid responsibilities, it’s only a matter of time before they try to get you to do the same thing.(当你想要实现梦想时,环境是至关重要的。注意你周围的人。如果你的朋友起得晚,经常出去玩,逃避责任,那么他们试图让你做同样的事情只是时间问题)”可知,本段讲述环境对实现梦想的重要性,所以C项“Therefore, limit the amount of time you spend with them.(因此,限制你和他们在一起的时间)”符合文意,和前文构成因果关系,其中them代指前文提到的起得晚,经常出去玩,逃避责任的朋友们。故选C项。
【39题详解】
设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“If your dream is to open up a fashion store, you’ll want to start doing research to learn more about the industry. You can purchase a few books and courses to gain a better understanding of how you’d like to approach your business model. You might need to purchase storage space or a small office space to hold all of your merchandise (商品). These details might seem small, but you’ll want to prepare for all of your expenses.(如果你的梦想是开一家时装店,你就需要开始做研究,更多地了解这个行业。你可以购买一些书籍和课程来更好地理解你想要如何实现你的商业模式。你可能需要购买存储空间或一个小的办公空间来容纳你所有的商品。这些细节可能看起来很小,但你要为所有的费用做好准备)”可知,本段讲述仔细研究梦想的细节,所以A项“Take a detailed look at the goals you have.(仔细看看你的目标)”符合文意。故选A项。
【40题详解】
根据前文“In order to achieve any worthwhile dream, you’ll have to develop a high level of discipline. When you’re disciplined, you’ll sit down to complete a task without giving in to your emotions.(为了实现任何有价值的梦想,你必须养成高度自律的习惯。当你自律时,你会坐下来完成一项任务,而不会屈服于你的情绪)”可知,此处在讲述自律的好处,所以B项“When you don’t feel like working, you still get it done.(当你不想工作的时候,你还是会完成它)”符合文意,承接上文,是对上文的补充。故选B项。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按下列格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Are you OK?” Griffin passed me a bottle of water.

Exchanging a high-five with the coach, we walked back onto the field.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
“Are you OK?” Griffin passed me a bottle of water. I nodded weakly, feeling the cool liquid slide down my throat and wash away some of the tension. He patted my shoulder, “Just stay focused, Aidan. You’ve got this.” His words were like a balm to my soul, and I felt a little more confident. I took a deep breath and focused on the task ahead.
Exchanging a high-five with the coach, we walked back onto the field. The sun was still shining brightly, but I felt a newfound determination. I knew I had to step up and play my best. The whistle blew, and the second half began. I stayed wide on the start and used my speed to get up the field. The ball came to me, and I drove it forward with determination. I felt my confidence returning as I slipped around defenders and made plays. The team rallied around me, and together we started to dominate the game.
