At a car wash in Shenzhen, a group of workers start their day at 8 am. They use water to wet the cars, make a soapy bubble mess, and move around while listening to music. They make washing cars seem like a fun game.
The car wash is called Xihaner. Most of the workers there are 26 years old, but because of their intellectual disabilities (智力障碍), they think and act like younger children. In almost 10 years, they have washed over 100,000 cars. By doing so, they have not only made money but also learned to live by themselves.
The man who started the car wash, Cao Jun, has a son who had a hard time learning like other kids. In 2002, Cao was told that his 7-month-old son’s learning would stay like a 6 or 7-year-old child’s. Cao and his wife were sad. They thought about having another baby, but later abandoned the idea. “The second baby would have to support his or her elder brother in the future. It wouldn’t have been right for both of them,” Cao Jun said.
In August 2015, Cao, with other parents facing similar challenges, opened the car wash and Cao’s son started working there in 2020. However, things did not go well, as the workers thought of car washing in a different way. Cao then hired (雇用) a trainer to teach them. After a while, the team got really good and could wash a car in just 20 to 30 minutes. Cao and the trainer also showed them how to dress nicely and talk nicely to customers.
“It’s been a long time since I last saw so many smiling faces. It’s so good,” one post read.

As human beings, the ability to understand emotions (情感) is important in communication. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) (自闭症谱系障碍) seem to live in their own world. They may have difficulty understanding what others say to them and expressing themselves through body language.
However, many people with ASD show a strong and early connection with music and are able to feel simple and hard musical emotions in childhood and adulthood, the paper Music: a unique window into the world of autism shows.
“I saw unbelievable musical and emotional growth in students with autism after they began to study music,” Mitchell Black, a researcher and mother of two adult sons with autism, says. “As a music teacher, I have seen the emotional change that music brings to students with autism both in the music classroom and at home.”
According to Mitchell Black, kids with autism find it easier to understand musical emotions than other emotions. They don’t need to read faces or understand the meanings behind different tones of voice.
Music not only helps children with autism express themselves, but also makes their speech and language skills better by using songs. A study found that when autistic children are talking, the part of their brain that helps them speak is not working well. But when they sing, that part of their brain works really well.
Professional (专业的) help is very important, but not just music therapists (治疗专家) can use music to help autistic children. Mitchell Black has been working on finding ways to help parents of autistic children use music in their children’s development. She believes they can learn to communicate through the language of music in a family setting.

A. To remember others’ words. B. To sing songs sweetly.
C. To calculate numbers. D. To use body language to communicate.
( ) 22. What do Mitchell Black’s words mean in Paragraph 3?
A. Music brings a lot of joy to people.
B. Music helps children with ASD a lot.
C. Autistic students don’t like studying music.
D. Music is the only way to make children with ASD feel better.
( ) 23. What might some volunteers do to help kids with ASD after reading the passage?
A. Help them practice body language.
B. Train them to become music therapists.
C. Encourage them to do sports every day.
D. Introduce them to music and musical activities.
( ) 24. How does Mitchell Black help autistic children?
A. By creating as many new songs as possible.
B. By doing more studies on brain activity during singing.
C. By helping parents use music in their children’s daily lives.
