Have you ever wondered why we say maidongxi (买东西) instead of mainánbei, shangcesuo (上厕所) instead of xiacesuo, and yijianxiangzuo (意见相左) instead of yijianxiangyou? Many Chinese words have directions in them, and there is lots of history and culture hidden behind.
East or West
When going shopping, Chinese people say maidongxi instead of mainanbei. A theory says that in the Tang Dynasty, there were two popular markets in Chang’an, the national capital at the time. One was called the East Market, and the other was called the West Market. When shopping, people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as maidongxi.
Up or down
We use shangcesuo to mean “go to the bathroom” and xiachufang to mean “go to the kitchen”. Why? In ancient times, houses were laid out(布局) in a certain way. The gate of the house would face south, with the bathroom in the northeastern part of the house and the kitchen in the southeastern part. On maps, north is usually at the top while south is at the bottom. In Chinese, we talk about the north as Shang and the south as xia. So people would say they’re going up to the bathroom and down to the kitchen.
Ancient Chinese not only used shang and xia to refer to (指代) directions but also social positions. For example, people used huangshang to refer to the emperor and dianxia to refer to princes who had a lower position than the emperor.
Left or right
Most people today are right-handed. They feel uncomfortable if they try to use their left hand to write or use chopsticks. This was true in old times as well. So in ancient China, “left” was related to (与……有关联) being different, such as in yijianxiangzuo. If people don’t accept common beliefs (信念), we still say they are following ______.
When shaking hands, it’s important to know which hand to use. In most cultures, the right hand is generally used for a handshake. For example, in some countries, such as India and Nepal, the left hand is considered unclean. However, if you are in a culture where the left hand is used, you’d better do as the locals do.
“Left” and “right” also have something to do with people’s social position. For a long time in ancient China, “right” stood for higher position than “left”. For example, the character “佑”, developed from “右”, means a person in a higher position would protect someone in a lower position.
24. Which of the following Chinese expressions can be used as an example in “Where to buy things”?

25. According to the passage, where was the bathroom located in ancient Chinese houses?
A. Southeastern part B. Northeastern part

But don’t worry; she’s not talking to you—she’s talking to phone scammers (诈骗者). That’s because Daisy is actually an AI chatbot. The company says, “Daisy is already wasting hundreds and hundreds of hours of scammers’ time, and has shared real life conversations the chatbot has had with them.” Some conversations last nearly an hour. She talks about her cat, Fluffy, and people in her family. In some conversations, she even gives the scammers what they want—bank information. But of course, they’re not real, “Daisy is also there to remind you that the person you’re speaking to on the phone might not always be who he says he is,” the company adds.

The seed vault (种子地窖)
A lot of countries need different kinds of seeds so that they can plant them again. There is an important reason for this. Sometimes plants can’t grow in a country because of bad weather or disease so farmers need new seeds.
You can keep seeds in a “seed vault”. It’s a place at a special temperature. The seeds don’t grow, but they can live for a long time. Norway has the biggest seed vault in the world — the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and it has seeds from a lot of different countries.
The vault is on the island of Spitsbergen. The island is about one thousand kilometers from the North Pole. It’s a very cold place so it’s good for seeds. Above the ground, the doorway is small, but inside, the building is huge. You walk down a long corridor (走廊), which is one hundred and thirty meters inside a mountain. At the end of it, there are three large areas with seeds.
There are about half a million kinds of seeds inside the vault. For example, there are kinds of seeds for rice from Asia and Africa, 32 kinds of seeds for potatoes from Ireland and seeds for different tomatoes from the USA. The seed vault has space for a lot more seeds. You can put about 2.2 billion seeds inside.
The seeds can live here for thousands of years because of the cold temperature of-18℃. So in the future, humans can grow any seed they want. In other words, the seed vault is the difference between life and death.

C. Southwestern part D. Northwestern part

C. pangmenzuodao D. zuosiyouxiang
27. What’s the best title of the article?
A. Directions in Chinese Language and Culture B. The History of Chinese Markets

推理判断题。根据文章第二段“When going shopping, Chinese people say maidongxi instead of mainanbei...people usually went to the East Market first, and then went to the West Market. As time went by, people started to describe shopping as maidongxi.” 故选A。
【25题详解】

If people don’t accept common beliefs, we still say they are following”可知,在古代中国,“左”与不同或不合常规有关联,如“意见相左”。
根据文章第一段“Many Chinese words have directions in them, and there is lots of history and culture hidden behind.”以及全文内容可知,本文主要介绍了汉语中一些包含方向词的词汇背后的历史和文化内涵。因此,最佳标题应体现这一主题。A选项“Directions in Chinese Language and Culture”意为“汉语语言和文化中的方向”,直接点明了文章的主题,符合题意。故选A。

Like many other grandmothers, Daisy likes cooking delicious meals for her family, chatting with her friends, and she isn’t very good with technology. Or, at least, that’s what she might tell people on the phone. Daisy also describes herself as “your most terrible dream”. But don’t worry; she’s not talking to you—she’s talking to phone scammers (诈骗者). That’s because Daisy is actually an AI chatbot. She was created by a UK phone company to speak to scammers on the phone and make them believe they’re talking to a real person.
Older people are easily cheated by scammers. In July 2024, a UK study found that about 67% of people over 75 were victims (受害者) of at least one scam in the six months before the study—with nearly 75% of those being phone scams.
Meet Daisy, who has been trained to have conversations with phone scammers, and waste their time. The company worked with Jim Browning, who has spent years acting like to be naive victim to waste scammers’ time. And that’s the whole point—Daisy can’t stop scammers, but she can slow them down. “Whenever she’s on the phone with a scammer, your parents, your grandparents, your relatives, are not being cheated,” Browning said.
28. What can we know about Daisy?
A. She is good at cooking. B. She belongs to a kind of robot.

五、读写综合
(一)阅读并回答问题。(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
The seed vault (种子地窖)
A lot of countries need different kinds of seeds so that they can plant them again. There is an important reason for this. Sometimes plants can’t grow in a country because of bad weather or disease, so farmers need new seeds.
