Is it possible that the sinking of the Titanic was caused by a ghost? A lot of the story below is true...but did it really happen quite like this?
Our story begins not in the icy cold waters of the North Atlantic, but rather thousands of miles away in Egypt. It is here, perhaps, that we can find the start of the mystery of the Titanic,in the year 1910,in the great city of Cairo. One day,a famous professor of Egyptian history called Douglas Murray was staying in Cairo, when he was contacted by an American adventurer.
The American had something unusual to offer Murray, something that was certain to thrill him:a beautiful ancient Egyptian mummy case, containing the mummy of an Egyptian queen. It was over 3,000 years old,but in beautiful condition—gold, with bright paintings on it.Murray was delighted with both the object and the askingprice. He gave the man a cheque immediately.
The cheque was never cashed. That evening the American adventurer died. For his part,Murray arranged to have the treasure sent back to Britain. However,it was not long before he learnt more about the beautiful mummy case:On the walls of the tomb in which it had been discovered, there were messages which warned of terrible consequences to anyone who broke into the tomb.Murray was disbelieving of these warnings until a few days later, when a gun he was holding exploded in his hand, shattering his arm.The arm had to be cut off.
After the accident,Murray decided to return to his homeland. On the return journey, two of his companions died mysteriously, and two servants who had handled the mummy also passed away. The nowterrified Murray decided he would get rid of the cursed case as soon as he arrived in London.A lady he knew named Janet Jones said she would like it,so he gave it to her.Shortly afterwards,Jones’ mother died, and she herself caught a strange disease. She tried returning the mummy, but naturally Murray refused it.In the end,it was presented to the British Museum.
Even in the museum, the mummy apparently continued to cause strange events.A museum photographer died shortly after taking pictures of the new exhibit;and a manager also died for no apparent reason. In the end,the British Museum decided to get rid of the mummy too. They sold it to a collector in New York.
At the start of April 1912,arrangements for the transfer were complete, and the mummy began the journey to its new home. But the New Yorker never received the mummy or its case. For when the Titanic sank, one of the objects in its strong room was the mummy case.Or so they say.

Solar power is helping bring about a future of cleaner energy, but there are limits to where rigid solar panels (刚性太阳能电池板) can go.A new kind of solar cell made with a mineral called perovskite(钙钛矿) can go almost anywhere, says physicist Olga Malinkiewicz. We can use perovskite cells on the surfaces of the building,on the roofs of the buildings,on the roofs of the cars and on the electronic devices. We can use it on the sails. We can use it in the balls, tents and unlimited applications.Malinkiewicz says perovskite has become a favorite among solar panel researchers.Because it can be printed, everyone can use it on every surface.
Malinkiewicz developed a way to print perovskite panels like an inkjet printer. She cofounded a company to produce them, called Soleil Technologies, after the Baltic sun goddess.Construction company Skanska is testing the panels at their Warsaw headquarters.Adam Targowski is sustainable(可持续的) development manager for Skanska. They work perfectly, even when they are not well exposed to sunlight. So we can use them in all surfaces of the building.Soleil calculates that about one square meter of panel can supply a day’s worth of power for one worker’s computer and lights. And they keep getting better as research continues, says the company’s scientific director Konrad Wojciechowski.
For other technologies,it took decades to really enter markets.Perovskite has been around only for few years in scientific research,so there is still a lot to be done, but potential is basically pretty much unlimited,I think. There are still durability and other problems to work out,but several companies expect to have perovskite panels on the market this year.

Ⅴ.七选五
The world is designed for righthanded people, but why does a tenth of the population prefer the left?
1
The answer to it remains a mystery.Since scientists have noticed that lefthandedness tends to run in families,it’s assumed that lefthandedness has a genetic(基因的) component to it. 2 In fact, identical(相同的) twins, who share the same genes, can sometimes prefer to use different hands. There are also plenty of theories on what else might determine which hand you write with, but many experts believe that it’s kind of random.
Historically, the left side and lefthandedness have been considered a negative thing by many cultures. 3 In some areas, the left hand became known as the “unclean” hand.In many religions, the right hand of God is the favored hand. For example,Jesus sits at God’s right side.God’s left hand, however,is the hand of judgement.Various activities and experiences become rude or even signs of bad luck when the left hand becomes involved. In some parts of Scotland,it is considered bad luck to meet a lefthanded person at the start of a journey. 4 A person giving directions will put their left hand behind them and even physically try to point with their right hand if necessary. In some Asian countries, eating with the left hand is considered impolite.
5 People come to realize that lefthandedness is natural.People even noticed that many famous people are lefthanded, including Benjamin Franklin,Leonardo da Vinci, and Charlie Chaplin. Some researchers find out that lefties(左撇子) are more creative and can deal with abstract thinking better. The lefthandedness is more easily adaptable to the righthanded world as well.Being lefthanded is no longer a sad story now; instead,it is a wonderful gift or maybe it is something you should take pride in.
A.In other words, lefthanders are born that way.
B.Lefthandedness used to be regarded as a disability.
C.The unfavorable associations of the use of the left hand among cultures are varied.
D.Why do they prefer to use their left hand rather than their right hand for routine activities?
E.Why do some parents force their lefthanded children to become righthanded when writing?
F.In Ghana, pointing, gesturing, giving or receiving items with the left hand is considered rude.
G.Fortunately, nowadays most societies and cultures no longer reject lefthandedness like before.

解析 词义猜测题。第四、五段讲述了与Murray同行的人员的相继死亡与失踪,因此可推知,该词表示“不祥的”。故选C。
2. 答案 A
4. 答案 B

One possible version:
Dear Mark,
How are you these days? Recently, I’ve done some research on Chinese characters. As a unique part of Chinese culture, they have a long history and various ways of creating new characters and expressing plentiful meanings. Here I’d like to introduce my favourite Chinese character to you.
It is the character “想” that I am talking about, which consists of two parts. “相” is the sound element, while “心” indicates “thought” and “emotion”. In addition to the structure of the character, what attracts me most is its abundant meanings such as “missing”, “thought” and “imagination”, enabling people to express different meanings appropriately according to the contexts. So having a good command of Chinese characters can help you understand Chinese culture profoundly.
If you have any interest in knowing more about Chinese characters, just let me know.
Best wishes!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
