On James Owen’s 70th birthday, he saw a video of himself walking slowly to the podium (讲台) where he was giving a talk, his feet hardly off the ground. “I looked like an old man,” said Owen, who built a successful career on Wall Street. Even worse, he felt like an old man.
He was about 25 pounds overweight and he had chronic trouble with his back, knees, and shoulders. But instead of giving in to age, Owen decided to set an ambitious five-year goal: He wanted to be pain-free and decided the way to get there was through exercise, even though he couldn’t do a single push-up at that time.
Owen began his exercise plan by walking, though he started huffing and puffing after five minutes. But that didn’t discourage him. He kept at the walks every day, along with some stretching. Once he had those basics down, he started weight lifting and hired a personal trainer to teach him and design a routine he could follow on his own. The last piece was finding other activities he enjoyed, which turned out to be cycling and swimming.
In less than five years, Owen was able to do three sets of 50 push-ups each and walk for miles each day. And yes, he was free of aches and pains. “Aging well is only about 20 to 25 percent genes, and the rest is lifestyle,” he says.
Owen used his experience to write a book called Just Move! A New Approach to Fitness After 50, in which he details how older adults can safely get off the couch and add more movement to their lives. “Think of it as movement, not exercise, just get started,” he says. “The key is slow and steady progress.”
Now 82 and retired, Owen exercises an hour a day, six days a week. “It is the best investment I’ve ever made in my life,” he says.
4. Why did Owen decide to set a five-year goal?
A. To keep healthy. B. To build a career.
C. To lose weight. D. To give a talk.
5. Which of the following can best describe Owen’s exercising process?
A. Boring and painful. B. Slow but fruitful.
C Tough and discouraging. D. Complex but ineffective.
6. What can we learn from Owen’s story?
A. It’s better to get started earlier. B. Life style is vital for one’s health.
C. Successful careers need investment. D. Genes play a key role in aging well.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To offer ways to reduce pain. B. To promote Owen’s new book.
C. To encourage old people to work out. D. To present health problems of the old.
C
On the first night of the new moon, I stare at the sky from a campsite in Northern California. The night is so black that when I hold out my hand, I can’t see my fingertips. The darkness feels palpable, with a weight of its own. I see a brush of lights — what I know is the spinning pinwheel of the Milky Way overhead. The sight of this distant galaxy fills me with awe (敬畏).
It’s worthwhile seeking out the quiet and depth of lightless skies. After all, research shows staying in the dark can contribute to better health. For instance, darkness helps cause our brains to release melatonin (褪黑素), which helps us sleep and reduces DNA damage. A 2024 study suggests spending time in nature at night is also good for your mental health. “Experiencing natural darkness brings a sense of awe and wonder in people which may be protective of human health,” says Ruskin Hartley, the executive director of Dark Sky International.
I always remember the night in October of 2022, when I found myself floating in a Zodiac raft in the Arctic Sea. My shipmates and I looked up into the large black sky above-the darkness was so dense (密集) that we couldn’t tell where the night sky ended and the inky sea began. I felt amazed while looking up at the stars. From then on, I decided to turn off artificial lights and electronic devices earlier in the evening to enjoy the dark sky.
Many of us refuse to hug the dark largely because they believe that darkness is linked to disorder and crime, leading to more street lights in many parts of the world, as well as to their deep-rooted fear of all things that go bump in the night.
I enjoy Simon & Garfunkel’s hit song The Sound of Silence, which starts off with the line “Hello darkness, my old friend”, that captures the nature of why escaping the light is necessary at times. It reminds us that some of our most meaningful moments of healing and insight happen in the dark.
8 What does the underlined word “palpable” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Stressful. B. Creative. C. Common. D. Obvious.
9. Why does the author always remember the night in October of 2022?
A It gave him a different experience of sea.
B. It started his affection for the darkness.
C. It made him realize the harm of artificial lights.
D. It helped him create a friendship with his shipmates.
10. What might be the main difficulty in hugging the dark?
A. Negative values about the dark. B. The side effects of light pollution.
C. The existence of dangers in the dark. D. A lack of promotion related to the dark.
11. What’s the aim of mentioning the song The Sound of Silence?
A. To remember two great singers. B. To encourage us to be quiet.
C. To prove the benefit of darkness. D. To tell ways to enjoy darkness.
D
After waking up, you may feel depressed that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been Al models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained a new AI system called Stable Diffusion to recreate images based on people’s brain scans (扫描) , reported Science.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US, which consisted of brain scans from four participants as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI) (功能性磁共振成像).
Stable Diffusion then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the FMRI data — when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, Stable Diffusion learned how human brains would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested Stable Diffusion on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, Stable Diffusion would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry (模糊的) airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to “decode (解码) the brain”, Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts or allow people to understand how differently other animals feel reality.
12. What can we know about Stable Diffusion?
A. It helped researchers train people’s minds. B. It can fully present people’s dreams.
C. It recorded many people’s brain scans. D. It can produce pictures from people’s thoughts.
13. How did Stable Diffusion learn about human brain activities?
A. By experimenting on the four participants.
B. By analyzing descriptions of human thoughts.
C. By checking 10,000 photos about human brains.
D. By studying patterns of blood flow in the brain.
14. What is the potential use of this technology according to the text?
A. Improving text-to-image models. B. Creating more accurate brain scans.
C. Learning how animals view the world. D. Helping people interpret their dreams.
15. What’s the best title for the text?
A. New Research on AI System B. The Way to Decode the Future
C. The Forms of Dreams D. A Study for Human Brains

Adam, Emily’s son, 15 years old, was in hospital because of brain disease. On the way to the hospital to accompany Adam, Emily bought a nice pair of basketball shoes at a store. Adam was overjoyed to receive them and showed them to the doctors and nurses who came to visit him. Tears welled up in Emily’s eyes as she saw her son’s happiness that day.
“Just look at how happy he is! Please save him!” she thought to herself, hiding her tears from her son and putting up a smile on her face. But unfortunately, a month later, her worst fears turned out true. Adam’s health condition worsened and he died suddenly.
As a single mother, Emily was very sad. She didn’t talk to anyone and stopped going to work. Almost a year passed like that. One day, when taking a walk, she noticed a homeless woman and a little boy sitting on a street corner, begging for food. However, people just passed by and no one approached them.
Feeling pity for the woman and the boy, Emily walked towards them. “Hey, would you like to join me for lunch at a restaurant nearby?” The woman replied, “Thank you, madam! My son and I haven’t eaten anything for two days.”
Just at that moment, Emily realized she was out of money. For the last month, Emily had not gone shopping even once because there was hardly any money left. Then two days ago, she ran out of food and hadn’t eaten anything herself.
Emily’s mind wandered to the basketball shoes she’d bought for Adam. They were brand new. She reasoned that if she returned them she would be able to get some money to help the woman and the little boy and that this was a good way to remember Adam. So Emily asked the woman to wait for a moment and promised to return soon.

C. Tough and discouraging.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. B 7. C

8. What does the underlined word “palpable” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Stressful. B. Creative. C. Common. D. Obvious.
9. Why does the author always remember the night in October of 2022?
A. It gave him a different experience of sea.
11 What’s the aim of mentioning the song The Sound of Silence?
A. To remember two great singers. B. To encourage us to be quiet.
C. To prove the benefit of darkness. D. To tell ways to enjoy darkness.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

【答案】12. D 13. D 14. C 15. A

Please save him!” she thought to herself hiding her tears from her son and putting up a smile on her face.

【答案】范文
Emily went back home quickly to collect the shoes and returned to the store where she’d bought them. Her heart ached as she held the shoes Adam had loved so much but never got to wear. Taking a deep breath, she approached the counter and explained her situation to the shop assistant. She asked if she could return them. To her relief, the assistant understood her predicament and agreed to give her a refund. Clutching the money in her hand, Emily felt a flicker of purpose she hadn’t felt in a long time.
After leaving the store, Emily rushed to the street corner. To her relief, the woman and her son were still there. “Come with me!” Emily said, leading them to a nearby grocery store. She bought bread, cheese, fruit, and milk, enough for several meals. She then took them to a small, quiet park nearby. As the hungry pair gratefully ate the simple meal, Emily watched the little boy. His eyes, wide with happiness as he bit into an apple, reminded her painfully, yet warmly, of Adam’s joy. It was the first step towards healing her broken heart.
