① How did you spend your last holiday? Did you just stare at a screen from morning till night? Well, you are not alone. A new survey shows that the average Chinese person spends over five and a half hours online every day. That’s a lot of time scrolling (滚屏) and watching videos! But is this really helping us relax, or is it just making our brains tired?
② First, let’s think about how we spend our time online. Most of us watch short videos rather than learning something new. This kind of low-value material doesn’t help us relax—it actually makes our thinking less clear. The term “brain rot” perfectly describes what happens when we spend too much time on meaningless online things.
③ Meanwhile, using the internet is like eating your favorite snack: it’s hard to stop. Our phones and tablets are full of endless short videos and memes, making them like personal fun factories. It’s easy and comfortable to just sit and scroll for hours, but this “easy fun” comes at a cost. The more time we spend on screens, the less we enjoy real life. We’re missing out on beautiful sunsets, heartfelt thanks, and fun hobbies. When did our lives become so boring?
④ Also, we’re forgetting how to relax in a meaningful way. Free time shouldn’t just be about watching Douyin or Bilibili. Instead, it should be a chance to connect with the world. Nature doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but it has fresh air, sunlight, and birdsong. Spending time with friends in real life is much better than laughing alone at a meme on your screen.
⑤ In short, life isn’t about how much time you have—it’s about how you use it. Screens are here to stay, but they shouldn’t take over our free time. The summer holiday is coming soon. Will you choose to do something more meaningful? Remember, “brain rot” is real!
9. What does “brain rot” mean in the passage?
A. Enjoying real-life activities. B. Learning something new online.
C. Feeling sad after watching videos. D. Thinking less clearly because of screen time.
10. Why does the author compare Internet to snacks?
A. It’s a waste of time. B. It’s not easy to control.
C. It’s bad for one’s health. D. It’s one way to have fun.
11. What does the author suggest for a meaningful holiday?
A. Chat with friends online. B. Stay indoors and use Wi-Fi.
C. Spend time in nature or with friends. D. Watch more educational videos.
12. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D 10. B 11. C 12. A
根据文章第②段“This kind of low-value material doesn’t help us relax—it actually makes our thinking less clear. The term ‘brain rot’ perfectly describes what happens when we spend too much time on meaningless online things.”
根据文章第③段“using the internet is like eating your favorite snack: it’s hard to stop.”
根据文章第④段“Nature doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but it has fresh air, sunlight, and birdsong. Spending time with friends in real life is much better than laughing alone at a meme on your screen.”
故选A。

More Chinese people are turning to AI chatbots like DeepSeek for mental (精神的) health support. They share problems of school stress, friendships, or work challenges and get advice in seconds. While AI therapy (治疗) is becoming popular online, experts wonder: can robots truly take the place of human therapists?
Globally, 45 percent of people who needed mental health care in 2024 did not receive it, with difficulties including the high cost and the shortage of therapists. AI tools like DeepSeek offer free and quick help. Daniel Lowd, a US professor, says, “If chatting with AI makes people feel better, that will be a good start.” Dr. Li Yong from China adds that AI can use basic communication skills to help users with simple problems, like exam nervousness and loneliness.
However, AI also has some disadvantages. Human therapists can build trust through face-to-face talks and make plans to meet each person’s special needs. For example, a therapist could notice hidden feelings like sadness or anger and change treatments over time—something AI can’t do yet. Li explains, “AI is short of the human touch, like empathy (同理心) and creativity.” Others worry about safety. They worry that AI might give wrong advice, which could make problems worse. Richard Lachman, a Canadian professor, points out, “AI chatbots act like therapists but aren’t trained like real ones.”
Experts stress that strict rules are needed. Apps like Wysa, developed by the UK’s health system, show how AI can work safely under supervision (监督). For now, AI is best used as a tool to support, not to replace human care. As technology grows, finding a balance between its advantages and risks will be the key to protecting mental health.
13. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A. An AI chatbot. B. AI therapy.
C. A human therapist. D. Mental health care.
14. According to Dr. Li Yong, AI therapy is a good choice for people who ______ .
A. have serious mental problems B. feel nervous and lonely
C. have no time for therapy D. hate face-to-face talks
15. What’s the advantage of human therapists according to Paragraph 3?
A. They can offer free advice. B. They are more hard-working.
C. They can reply to messages quickly. D. They are more caring and creative.
16. What is the best title of the text?
A. AI Chatbots: A New Hope for Physical Health.

D. AI Chatbots: The Challenges of Mental Health Support.

For example, a therapist could notice hidden feelings like sadness or anger and change treatments over time—something AI can’t do yet. Li explains, ‘AI is short of the human touch, like empathy (同理心) and creativity.’”
根据第一段“While AI therapy (治疗) is becoming popular online, experts wonder: can robots truly take the place of human therapists?”,最后一段“For now, AI is best used as a tool to support, not to replace human care.”

Buddy Reading
Reading a good book is really a great journey. When a reader gets into a well-written book it’s just like going into a new world and living someone else’s life for some time. This experience becomes even more wonderful when it’s done by buddy reading. That means two or more people read together.
During buddy reading, the buddies do lots of different reading activities. They may take turns to read out loud, share their favorite parts, or talk about the characters and the story. For example, they can stop at an exciting part of the story and argue about what will happen next. This not only makes reading more fun but also helps them understand the book better.
Although having students of the same age do buddy reading is a good choice, schools often like to match older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a program, and it has been very successful. In this two-year program, both the younger and older readers have got a lot of benefits. They have learned to be kind and patient when listening to each other. A younger student may be a little shy at first when reading out loud, and the older buddy has to wait patiently for him to finish. Also, this program gives chances to practice important life-long skills. Take leadership for example. Older students can lead the talk about the book, helping the younger ones to think carefully. Communication skills are also improved as they share their ideas about the story. Jason, a student from Green School, shared his experience. He said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident in his reading and speaking after knowing that he was a role model.
What’s more, the school has become a more united (团结的) community because of buddy reading. The reading buddies are looking forward to their meetings and feel a strong connection. The students are really excited when they see their reading buddies in the school hallway.
Now that summer vacation is coming, it’s a perfect time to start reading. So, why not get together with a friend, choose a book you both like, and start this great reading journey together?

Lacquer (漆器) art is a form of traditional art in China. It uses lacquer to paint on the surface of wares (器皿) or artworks. Lacquer comes from lacquer trees as a natural liquid. When you use lacquer for painting, it can stop wares from going bad. It can also help against high temperatures. If you heat the lacquer and add colors, it becomes colorful. The lacquerware looks nice and it is also useful.
China was the first country to use lacquer. People started using it in the Xia Dynasty. By the Han Dynasty, lacquerware became part of everyday life. In ancient times, there were many lacquer trees in China. The famous thinker Zhuang Zi took care of a lacquer tree garden during the Warring States Period.
Early lacquerware was simple. It was made from wood or bamboo and painted with lacquer. Over time, new skills like colored patterns and gold decorations (装饰品) appeared. Different dynasties had their own styles of lacquerware. In the Han Dynasty, popular lacquer items included boxes, plates, earrings, and masks and so on. They were mostly red and black. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, lacquerware making reached a new high. Lacquer techniques mixed with building and furniture making. And people paid more attention to the looks.
Today, the main places for making lacquerware are Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Pingyao in Shanxi Province. Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province, Dafang in Guizhou Province, Tianshui in Gansu Province, Yichun in Jiangxi Province, and Fengxiang in Shaanxi Province.

A. B. C. D.
D
A An AI chatbot. B. AI therapy.
C. A human therapist. D. Mental health care.
14. According to Dr. Li Yong, AI therapy is a good choice for people who ______ .
A. have serious mental problems B. feel nervous and lonely
C. have no time for therapy D. hate face-to-face talks
15 What’s the advantage of human therapists according to Paragraph 3?
A. They can offer free advice. B. They are more hard-working.
C. They can reply to messages quickly. D. They are more caring and creative.
16. What is the best title of the text?
A. AI Chatbots: A New Hope for Physical Health.
B. AI Chatbots: Can They Replace Human Therapists?
C. AI Chatbots: The Future of Mental Health Care
D. AI Chatbots: The Challenges of Mental Health Support.

Buddy Reading
Reading a good book is really a great journey. When a reader gets into a well-written book, it’s just like going into a new world and living someone else’s life for some time.
