When my son started preschool I realized he was different. Almost every morning at drop-off, he would hold on to my leg until I could free myself and run away feeling guilty. I soon learned that he spent most days with his head on his desk, refusing to speak or make eye contact with anyone. However, he had no problem speaking at home, which puzzled me.
It wasn’t long before he was diagnosed with selective mutism (SM), a rare form of anxiety characterized by the inability to speak in certain situations. For a child like him, school and other social situations can be especially stressful, which explained why my son didn’t want me to leave him there.
I went into full mama bear mode. Each year, I wrote a detailed email to his classroom teacher before the start of school, giving them information on how to deal with him in class. But in a large public school, with nearly 40 kids per class and only one counselor (顾问) to deal with everything, my emails often went ignored, and my son rarely received the support he needed. And when I turned to the administration, they suggested we find another school. However, my son begged me to keep him in the same school with his older sister, insisting if he had to go to school, he liked knowing she was in the building.
Against our better judgment, we decided to trust him and let him lead. To our surprise, his competitive nature made him a determined student, and his grades reflected his effort. Because of his spirit, I became a positive advocate for him, so did his fourth-grade teacher. After constant efforts, we came up with solutions that met the curriculum within his level of comfort.
Now he is still a little nervous about school, but I’m less anxious knowing he has the tools and the support he needs to cope. He feels empowered to email his teachers and ask for help outside of class. He’s playing soccer with a team of boys he calls his “friends”. And for the first time in a long time, he let go of my leg, waved goodbye and walked into the school building to face the day.
4. What initially worried the mother about her son?
A. His physical health condition. B. His conflicts with classmates.

C. Crowded classes and staff shortages. D. Teachers’ lack of professional training.
6. Which quality best describes the mother?
A. Strict but patient. B. Overprotective but kind.
C. Passionate and respectful. D. Determined and optimistic.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Mother and Son: Partners in Growth.
B. Unconditional Love Defeating Childhood Anxiety.
C. School Challenges for Selective Mutism Kids.
D. Silent Struggle: A Special Education Journey.

On a windy day, 40 middle school students stand by the Harlem River in New York City. Their teacher, Mr. White, pulls a metal cage out of the river. Inside are clusters of oysters (牡蛎). The last time they were here, the oysters were babies.
The students’ job is to measure how much the oysters have grown and test the river water for pollutants. They will report their findings to researchers at the Billion Oyster Project (BOP). Why work so hard? To make the city’s waterways healthy again.
Oysters are important for the underwater community they share with plants, fish, and other life. So they are also called a keystone species. If a keystone species disappears, other plants and animals may die out. That’s exactly what happened 100 years ago in New York Harbor. Before then, lots of oysters lived here. The oysters were delicious — maybe too delicious. By the early 1900s, people were eating them faster than they could grow.
The oysters were in trouble for another reason. Pollution was pouring into the waters of the growing city, and few types of animals could live in it. Since the 1970s, new laws have helped reduce poisonous waste. Some fish started to swim through again. But oysters were still missing — until recently. The BOP began in 2014 to help bring oysters back to New York Harbor. So far, students and volunteers have placed about 25,000,000 oysters into the harbor.
“The oysters definitely look much bigger now,” says a student named Kelly. Taking turns, the kids measure all the oysters, then compare notes. The biggest oyster is over 2 inches long, much bigger than a healthy size for its age.
As more oysters grow, the water should become clearer. Also, other animals should move in. Finally, the students put the oysters back in the cage. Mr. White lowers it into the river. When the oysters are big enough, they will be moved to the middle of the harbor. For today, everyone agrees: the future is looking bright for New York Harbor.
8. Why do students examine oysters in the river?
A. To catch polluted fish. B. To test new water filters.
C. To study oyster eating habits. D. To report growth data to BOP.
9. What makes oysters a keystone species?
A. They clean water fastest. B. They resist all pollutants.
C. They support underwater life. D. They attract scientific interest.
10. What caused oysters’ near extinction?
A. New environmental laws. B. Lack of student volunteers.
C. Rising water temperatures. D. Over-consumption and pollution.
11. What best describes the outlook for New York Harbor?
A. Uncertain despite efforts. B. Risky for students’ safety.
C. Disappointing with slow results. D. Hopeful due to visible progress.
D
Experts often recommend that people specialize in one field of work to maximize their chances of success. Yet our recently published research indicates that successful innovators take a broader path.
We looked at the careers of Nobel Prize winners, who are arguably among the most innovative people in the world. We found that they are unusually likely to be what we call “creative polymaths.” That is, they purposely integrate formal and informal expertise from widely varied disciplines to produce new and useful ideas and practices.
Herbert Simon won the Nobel Prize in economics in 1978 for his pioneering research into the decision-making process within economic organizations. Beyond Simon’s scholarly work, his additional interests included piano playing, musical composition, drawing, painting and chess. He often referred to the intellectual excitement, emotional pleasure and novel insights he drew from integrating his many hobbies with his work.
Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard combined an equally diverse range of skills to win the 1995 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine, which was awarded for her discoveries concerning early embryonic (胚胎的) development. As a science student, Nüsslein-Volhard tried physics, physical chemistry and biochemistry before settling on embryology. She advised scholars to become similarly broad. “You should, as far as possible, avoid mainstream areas and change fields after your Ph. D. in order to be able to work on an original, self-selected topic,” she said.
In 2024, the Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to John J. Hopfield, who exemplifies a polymathic approach by integrating biology, physics, and neuroscience (神经科学) to develop models that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks.
In our view, an increasingly complex and diverse world needs not only specialized experts but also creative generalists — the polymathic types who specialize in the breadth and integration that drive knowledge beyond what people already believe is possible.
12. What does “creative polymaths” underlined in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Individuals who combine varied expertise.
B. Individuals who pursue an unusual career.
C. Individuals who understand all about one subject.
D. Individuals who know a bit of everything but master none.
13. What might Herbert Simon consider his hobbies?
A. Relaxations beyond his busy life.
B. Inspirations for his professional work.
C. Expressions of his high intelligence.
D. Means to connect with like-minded friends.
14. What did Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard suggest scholars do?
A. Get a Ph.D. degree. B. Engage with several jobs.
C. Dig into underexplored areas. D. Dive deep into a research field.
15. Why did the author write the text?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To present an argument.
C. To inform a new research finding. D. To applaud some Nobel winners’ work.

Maintain a healthy diet.
____17____ This means making sure you eat plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, proteins, healthy fats, etc. “When your body has sufficient amounts of the micronutrients found in these foods, it helps to maintain your immune system’s homeostasis (体内稳态),” says Dr. Chen Lin, an Allergy and Immunology specialist.
Exercise regularly.
“Moderate-intensity exercise helps enhance immune surveillance (监视),” explains Dr. Lin. You can think of immune surveillance as a monitoring process of your immune system. ____18____ This means it’s important to focus on staying active and getting regular exercise.
Get plenty of sleep.
Sleep certainly doesn’t feel like an active process. ____19____ “Sleep is important for the immune system’s homeostasis,” says Dr. Lin. To give your immune system the best chance to fight off infection and illness, it’s important to get sufficient hours of high-quality sleep on a regular schedule every night.

In our weekly staff meeting, our editor Ashley was not pleased with the quality of our reporting. “Our readership is way down. We need better stories for this Thursday’s school newspaper. Does anybody have any ideas?” she said.
I handed her my article about our basketball team beating Deerfield High School the previous night by one point. “Sports stories are fun,” she said, “but not good enough for the front page. We need something to really get people ‘s attention.”
After our meeting, we left the newsroom together and heard someone screaming, “Perry is missing!” Perry was a big red parrot and had been our school mascot (吉祥物) for ten years. He played an important role in students’ lives, both in and out of class. He had also been a constant presence at school events, inspiring a sense of unity among students.
Everyone gathered around Perry’s empty cage, heartbroken. Suddenly, a student from the crowd came over and showed me a photo. “You’re a reporter for the school paper, right? I happened to take this yesterday,” he said. In the photo was a Deerfield High School basketball player with something large hidden under his shirt around the size of a parrot.
“He must have stolen Perry to get back at us for winning the game!” Ashley cried. We hurried back to the newsroom, agreeing to run the photo on the front page with the headline “Deerfeld Stole Perry.” “This is just the story we need. Everyone will read it,” Ashley said confidently.
After she left, I took a closer look at the photo. The clock in the background read 4:15 pm, but our game against Deerfield hadn’t started until 4:30 pm. Why would the boy have taken Perry before we even played? An uneasy feeling came over me that we might have falsely accused someone.
I went to Perry’s usual caretaker to ask if he knew Perry was missing. ”He’s not missing. He’s retired. He’s ready for some quieter days,“ he said. Learning the truth, I immediately told Ashley and suggested writing a story to say goodbye to Perry.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右:

When my son started preschool, I realized he was different.
Now, he is still a little nervous about school, but I’m less anxious knowing he has the tools and the support he needs to cope. He feels empowered to email his teachers and ask for help outside of class. He’s playing soccer with a team of boys he calls his “friends”. And for the first time in a long time, he let go of my leg, waved goodbye and walked into the school building to face the day.

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. D

They will report their findings to researchers at the Billion Oyster Project (BOP).(学生们的工作是测量牡蛎的生长情况,并检测河流水体中的污染物含量。他们将把研究结果报告给“十亿牡蛎项目”(BOP)的研究人员)”可知,学生们在河里对牡蛎进行检查是为了向 BOP 报告生长数据。故选D。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Oysters are important for the underwater community they share with plants, fish, and other life. So they are also called a keystone species. If a keystone species disappears, other plants and animals may die out. (牡蛎对于与之共存的植物、鱼类及其他生物所构成的水下生态系统来说至关重要。因此,它们也被称作“关键物种”。如果这种关键物种消失,其他植物和动物可能会随之灭绝)”可知,牡蛎成为关键物种是因为它们能维系水下的生态平衡。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“By the early 1900s, people were eating them faster than they could grow.(到了20世纪初,人们对其食用速度超过了其生长速度)”以及第四段“Pollution was pouring into the waters of the growing city, and few types of animals could live in it. (不断发展的城市水域中不断有污染物涌入,而很少有种类的动物能够生存于此)”可知,导致牡蛎濒临灭绝的原因是过度捕捞和污染。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“As more oysters grow, the water should become clearer. Also, other animals should move in. Finally, the students put the oysters back in the cage. Mr. White lowers it into the river. When the oysters are big enough, they will be moved to the middle of the harbor. For today, everyone agrees: the future is looking bright for New York Harbor.(随着越来越多的牡蛎生长,河水应该会变得更清澈。此外,其他生物也会陆续迁入。最后,学生们把牡蛎放回了笼子里。怀特先生将笼子放入河中。当牡蛎长得足够大时,它们就会被移到港口的中央。对于今天而言,每个人都一致认为:纽约港的未来一片光明)”可知,纽约港的前景因为取得了明显的进展,所以充满希望。故选D。

【答案】Dear Chris,
Learning that you’re keen on Chinese outdoor education, I’m writing to share a unique literature class I had with you!
Last Friday, our literature class was held at Riverside Park, where we studied poetry writing in nature. Under the trees, we learned to write poems about nature. Our teacher showed us how to describe sunlight through leaves and use bird songs for rhythm. The coolest part was writing short poems on paper strips and tying them to branches, watching wind make them dance like nature’s own poetry book.
This experience taught me that real poetry isn’t just in textbooks — it’s all around us. You’d enjoy this creative way of learning! How about the courses in your school? Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文
To my surprise, Ashley insisted on reporting the “Deerfield Stole Perry” story. “This is the very story we need to attract more readers,” she argued. To convince her, I defended that if we wrote this article, we would be telling a lie. Noticing her hesitant expression, I further explained the potential harm it would cause to the player and our, paper ‘s reputation. After some discussion, Ashley finally gave in, “OK, let’s try with real stories.“ Then I went to gather all the necessary information to write an article about Perry and the precious memories we shared over the years.
On Thursday, the paper came out with the headline “Bye-Bye, Perry” on the front page. Soon, it sparked heated discussions among students about Perry. Many were disappointed with Perry’s sudden departure, but were comforted by the fact that he was in good care. The story also evoked sweet memories of Perry. Some students even requested to share their stories of him in our paper! Seeing the story’s success, Ashley came to me and said sincerely, “You are right! It’s a good story.” Her words brought me a great sense of fulfillment. Indeed, true stories might not always draw attention, but they have the power to touch and connect.
