From the age of eleven, Robert Swan knew he wanted to be an adventurer. Influenced by famous adventurers Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott, Swan wanted to become the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles (北极和南极). People told him he was crazy, but after years of raising money, he began his adventure.
In January 1986, Swan and his team arrived at the South Pole after a 1,400-kilometre journey. Just three years later, Swan created a new team to head to the North Pole. After walking 1,000 kilometres in 60 days, the team finally succeeded. Swan, in his own words, became “the first person stupid enough to walk to both Poles”.
During those two adventures, however, Swan noticed some terrible things. At the South Pole, his eyes changed colour because of the sun’s harmful rays (光线) going through the hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层) . These rays are harmful to both humans and the environment. At the North Pole, the ice started to melt (融化) under his feet. This was four months earlier than the usual “melt season”. These experiences made Swan realise something-the Poles were in real danger.
That feeling never left Swan. He now works hard so that he will get more people to pay attention to environmental protection. In doing this, Swan hopes that he can help not only with the Poles, but also with humans’ health.

Last Monday Li Hua rode his bike back home. On his way home, at the crossroads, he saw an old lady going across the road. Because of the rush hours, there were many cars on the road. The lady hesitated about whether she should cross it, but she was afraid to do that. When Li Hua saw that, he offered to stop the traffic with his bike in order to lead her to cross the road safely.

One day at the end of the class, a wise teacher told each of her students to bring a plastic bag and a bag of potatoes to school.
The next day she told her students, “From today on, for every person you don’t like in your lives, you can choose a potato, write the person’s name and the date on it and then put it in the plastic bag.” Day after day, some of the students’ bags were very heavy. They were then told to carry this bag with them everywhere they went for a week. They would put it inside their quilts (被子) at night, on the seats when sitting in a car or on a bus, and next to their desks at school. The days carrying the bag around with them made students get to know what a weight they were carrying in their minds. They had to pay attention to it all the time so that they wouldn’t forget it. As time passed by, the potatoes went bad and smelt nasty (恶心的). They all tried to get rid of them.
Too often we think of tolerance (宽容) as a gift to other people, and it clearly is for ourselves! If we choose to keep our sadness and hatred (仇恨) in our hearts, we will have to carry them around all our lives.

It’s reported that more than 450 million Chinese have myopia(近视). Around 30 percent for primary school students, 60 percent for junior high students and 80 percent for senior high students are nearsighted. Maybe this is because students spend a lot of time reading books and using electronic products.
Parents might have tried to do something to fix it, such as having their children get eye massages(按摩), take medicine or even get surgery. People who offer these services or products often promise that they can reduce(缓解) or even cure(治愈) myopia.
However, you will no longer see advertisements like this before long. The government has made a notice to ban(禁止) this kind of advertisements. The notice bans businesses from using words like “recovery”(恢复) and “myopia cure” in their advertisements. The notice says that myopia cannot be completely cured with medical technology now. As a result, these advertisements could mislead children and their parents.
To reduce myopia among young people, the government made a new plan last August. The plan limits(限制) not only the time children play video games but also the production of new video games.
Young people can prevent and control myopia by spending more time outside and less time in front of books or computers. People who have eyesight problems should go to a hospital and let a doctor decide what to do.
36. What’s the myopia rate of junior high students according to the passage?
A. 30%. B. 45%. C. 60%. D. 80%.

A. Students in lower grades are easy to get myopia.
B. Production of new video games has been limited.
C. Spending less time outdoors is good for children’s eyesight.
D. The notice gives advice on protecting the eyesight of elderly people.
40 What can we learn from the passage?

B. Students shouldn’t be allowed to play video games.
