When it comes to technology, never before have we been both more dependent, and more cautious.Society is more connected, but also more lonely; more productive, but also more burntout; we have more privacy tools, but arguably less privacy.Would it be wrong to say we are becoming disappointed with it?
There's no doubt that some tech innovation has been universally great.A new antibiotic that killed a previously deadly superbug was invented by an AI tool.Machines that can suck carbon dioxide out of the air could be a huge help in the fight against climate change. But on the other hand, techrelated scandals (丑闻) dominate headlines.Stories about cyberattacks and horrible online abuse are regularly on the news.“Like everything, tech has a dark side.It is a twoedged sword,” says veteran Silicon Valley watcher, Prof Mike Malone.
“Fundamentally, if there was a problem people would, should, stop using it,” Paolo Pescatore, an analyst, says. But he then goes on to talk about the peer pressure to remain plugged in—from colleagues, friends and family, and even from governments wanting to switch to digital services.
Mr.Halgas, a young tech boss with big ambition, tells me that the industry has become a more easily affected place for its staff.“Tech workers were very comfortable in our jobs,” he explains.“People used to say , ‘Google isn't a job; it's a retirement plan’.Those days are long gone.” “Tech workers thought they were safe from automation: now we are among the people who might be replaced by codewriting Al tools,” he says.
A recent survey by PR firm Edelman suggested that 52% of people in the UK believed tech innovation was developing too fast, and 70% thought tech bosses should develop new tech slowly.
Realistically, there is practically zero chance of that happening. The money and power that is flooding in, particularly to the AI sector, speaks for itself.“But the outpouring of public debate that also centers around it is healthy”, argues Prof Malone.“ We're not just blindly embracing new tech anymore and that's a good thing,” he says.
1.What do Mr.Halgas's words indicate?
A.Tech industry is taking a bad turn.
B.Workers in tech industry are comfortable.
C.Google provides detailed retirement plans.
D.Tech workers may be replaced someday.
2.What can we learn about new tech from the last 2 paragraphs?
A.New tech is well received currently.
B.New tech can not flood into the Al sector.
C.New tech is under sensible discussion now.
D.New tech is criticized for developing too slow.
3.What will the followup text focus on?
A.A bolder attitude to developing new tech.
B.An urgent appeal to welcome new tech.
C.A balanced approach to embracing new tech.
D.A comprehensive plan to advance new tech.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Should the Public Embrace Digital Services?
B.Can Innovative Technology Follow Up?
C.Is It Good to Slow Tech Innovation Down?
D.Should We Have Faith in Technology?
根据文章第四段“‘Tech workers thought they were safe from automation: now we are among the people who might be replaced by codewriting Al tools,’he says.(他说:‘技术工作者认为他们不会受到自动化的影响:现在我们可能会被编写代码的人工智能工具取代。’)”
根据文章倒数第二段“A recent survey by PR firm Edelman suggested that 52% of people in the UK believed tech innovation was developing too fast, and 70% thought tech bosses should develop new tech slowly.(公关公司爱德曼(Edelman)最近的一项调查显示,52%的英国人认为科技创新发展太快,70%的人认为科技老板应该慢点开发新技术。)”和文章最后一段“Realistically, there is practically zero chance of that happening. The money and power...that's a good thing,’he says.(实际上,发生这种情况的可能性几乎为零。资金和权力的涌入,尤其是人工智能领域,说明了一切。‘但围绕它展开的大量公开辩论是有益的,’马龙教授辩称。他表示:‘我们不再盲目地接受新技术,这是一件好事。’)”可知,新技术现在正在被进行明智的讨论。故选C。
3.C 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“‘But the outpouring of public debate that also centers around it is healthy’, argues Prof Malone.‘We're not just blindly embracing new tech anymore and that's a good thing,’he says.(‘但围绕它展开的大量公开辩论是有益的,’马龙教授辩称。他表示:‘我们不再盲目地接受新技术,这是一件好事。’)”可知,人们不再盲目地接受新技术,可推知后续文章会重点讲述接受新技术的平衡方法。故选C。
4.D 主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“When it comes to technology, never before have we been...are becoming disappointed with it?(谈到技术,我们以前从未如此依赖它,也从未如此谨慎。 社会变得更加紧密,但也更加孤独;我们变得更有效率,但也更加疲惫不堪;我们有了更多的隐私工具,但隐私保护却可能更少了。难道说我们正在对它感到失望是错误的吗?)”结合全文内容可知,文章就我们是否应该对技术有信心展开讨论。D项“Should We Have Faith in Technology?(我们应该对技术有信心吗?)”

Agriculture has come a long way from its ancient beginnings. Long ago, farmers would work hard on their individual plots of land, using simple tools or even their bare hands. They tended to their crops for many hours each day so that the crops grew well. __1__ For example, a single storm could destroy a whole year's work, while a summer of good weather could ensure a good harvest.
Modern science and technology have helped to greatly reduce the backbreaking labour involved in farming, along with the reliance on luck and guesswork. __2__
Probably one of the most beneficial innovations is drip irrigation, which has made it possible to develop big, green farms in the middle of the desert. Simcha Blass, an Israeli scientist, discovered this new way of irrigation in the 1930s. Through this discovery, farmers can now produce crops on dry land without needing much water. __3__ The limited and focused use of just the right amount of water also denies moisture (水分) to weeds, keeping them from harming the crops.
__4__ However, what if an area has plenty of water, but little usable soil? As it turns out, it is possible to grow plants without using soil at all. With hydroponics (水培), plant roots are supported by rocks or a fiber mat. Nutrientrich water is then provided so that the plants can grow. Recent research has centered on vertical hydroponics farming. With a vertical farm, the crops are planted in containers that are piled into plant skyscrapers. __5__
With such technological advances, the image of a farmer pushing a plough will eventually become a thing of the past.
A.Luck played a great part in farming.
B.Some areas would be too dry to grow crops.
C.Drip irrigation deals with a lack of water in an area.
D.There have been experiments to make drip irrigation a reality.
E.This irrigation method uses far less water than other methods.
F.Furthermore, nearly all hydroponic farms partially or fully automated.
G.Farmers have benefited greatly from innovations in crop production.
1.A 根据上文“They tended to their crops for many hours each day so that the crops grew well.(他们每天花好几个小时照料庄稼,以便庄稼长得好。)”指出农民们为了庄稼长得好,每天要花好几个小时照料庄稼,下文“For example, a single storm could destroy a whole year's work, while a summer of good weather could ensure a good harvest.(例如,一场暴风雨可以毁掉一整年的工作,而一个好天气的夏天可以保证丰收。)”
2.G 根据上文“Modern science and technology have helped to greatly reduce the backbreaking labour involved in farming, along with the reliance on luck and guesswork.(现代科学技术大大减少了农业劳动的负担,同时也减少了对运气和猜测的依赖。)”
3.E 根据上文“Through this discovery, farmers can now produce crops on dry land without needing much water.”指出滴灌的优点,农民不仅可以在旱地上种植,而且不需要太多水,下文“The limited and focused use of just the right amount of water also denies moisture (水分) to weeds, keeping them from harming the crops.”
4.C 根据由下文“However, what if an area has plenty of water, but little usable soil? As it turns out, it is possible to grow plants without using soil at all. With hydroponics (水培), plant roots are supported by rocks or a fiber mat. Nutrientrich water is then provided so that the plants can grow.”
5.F 根据上文“Recent research has centered on vertical hydroponics farming. With a vertical farm, the crops are planted in containers that are piled into plant skyscrapers.”
