Unit 1 People of Achievement
A★
(2025·安徽“江南十校”联考)Heman Bekele is not your typical high school student.Rather than spending his free time playing video games or staring at his phone, this 14 yearold from Fairfax, Virginia was calling professors and conducting experiments, all to create a soap that could treat skin cancer, and to make it affordable for everyone who needs it.His work won him the grand prize in this year's 3M Young Scientist's Challenge, a competition that encourages kids to think of unique ways to solve everyday problems.
Growing up in Ethiopia, Bekele found in pity that people working outside were likely to end up getting skin cancer.Skin cancer did have cures and was treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally was almost $40,000.Those shocking statistics really inspired him to create a more accessible solution. He started doing experiments and working on different things, and that turned into his bar of soap as a project.
A lot of his research and development started in his family's kitchen and in his basement. But as he reached the final of the competition, he realized that he did need to do a little bit more outside of just his house. So he reached out to people at University of Virginia and people at Georgetown, and he got a lot of assistance. The number one person would be Deborah Isabelle, who helped him organize and structure his ideas during the finalist competition.Bekele said that he definitely couldn't have done that all by himself.
Bekele's awardwinning soap is a compound based bar of soap and it's charged with different cancer fighting chemicals. The color of the soap is a bit of a dark type of white and it has a rough surface, which could be a good exfoliant(去角质剂).It does have a strong medicine smell and feel a bit stickier. The whole point of it is that even once you wash off the soaps, the medicinal parts will stay on your skin.It can activate the body's immune cells to defend cancer.
Bekele won 25,000 prize money and he was going to use it to continue research. He said, “I still need a lot of resources to be able to conduct this research, so this money will definitely help me achieve it.”

(2025·衡阳二模)Omar Vazquez grew up in poverty on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. He watched his single mother struggle to put food on the table, and today the memory inspires him to help those in need. When an invasive (入侵的) seaweed called sargassum showed up on Mexico's Caribbean beaches, Omar looked past the matter of it all and saw an opportunity to help others.
Sargassum is not dangerous, but it has an unpleasant smell and can become so thick that it keeps people from entering the water.Mexico has experienced recordsetting amounts of the seaweed in recent years, and it has made its way to Florida's beaches as well.Experts say there could be as much as 100 tons of sargassum blocking Mexican shorelines in 2023.
With tourism dollars at risk, officials and locals alike were eager to remove the seaweed, but only Omar saw its true potential. The professional gardener organized a beach cleanup that provided jobs for about 300 local families, but he knew there was more to do.Since people's attitude towards the seaweed reminded him of his own life experiences, he decided to become an agent (推动者) for change.
When sargassum started arriving, everyone was complaining.“I wanted to make something good out of something everyone saw as bad,” Omar explained.
In 2018, Omar found a way to turn sargassum into building blocks that he calls Sargablock. He creates these blocks by mixing 40% sargassum with other materials like clay, then putting them in a blockforming machine and baking them in the sun for days. The end result is an organic, sustainable, and ecologically friendly building material that experts say could last for 120 years.
To date, Omar's company, Bluegreen Mexico, has used 700 tons of sargassum to build lowincome housing for those in need.Omar said he would take on more projects, and donate more houses to single mothers like his own mom.

(2025·广东省高三一模)Student team TU/ecomotive at the Eindhoven University of Technology has developed a sustainable electric passenger car that captures more carbon dioxide (CO2) than it emits while driving.Called ZEM, for zero emission mobility, the twoseater purifies the air through a special filter (过滤器).By storing the captured CO2 and then dealing with it, ZEM can contribute to reducing global warming. The students will continue to improve the vehicle with the goal of making it carbonneutral (碳中和) for its entire life cycle.
The car can capture 2 kilograms of CO2 through a special filter at 20,000 travel miles per year. This means that ten cars can store as much CO2 as an average tree. That may not seem like much, but the overall payoff is significant if you were to utilize it in every passenger car. After all, there are more than a billion passenger cars driving around the world, which could capture net CO2 instead of emitting it.
A life cycle analysis with SimaPro software can be used to determine the extent to which the life cycle of the vehicle—from construction to use and afterlife—is carbonneutral.Several innovations contribute to this goal.Consider the 3D printing techniques used by the students. The body panels are made through 3D printing, resulting in almost no remaining waste. In addition, the student team prints plastics that can be recycled for other projects.
The electric and sustainable fourwheel drive has a sporty look. With the good reason, say the students, because a sporting challenge awaits the automotive industry. After all road transport must become much more sustainable.
Nikki Okkels, external relations manager at TU/ecomotive, says: “We call on the industry to pick up the challenge, and of course we are happy to think along with them.We haven't finished developing yet, but we believe it will eventually hit the road.We warmly invite car makers to come and take a look.”
9.How can ZEM reduce global warming?
A.It produces no carbon emissions during construction.
B.It can transform captured CO2 into green energy.
C.It can last long due to its improved life cycle.
D.It cleans the air by absorbing CO2.
10.What does the underlined word “utilize” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Show. B.Drive.
C.Apply. D.Catch.
11.What contributes to the vehicle's carbon neutrality according to paragraph 3?
A.3D printing techniques.
B.SimaPro software.
C.Reusable waste materials.
D.Advanced afterlife recycling.
12.What does Nikki Okkels expect of the fourwheeler?
A.It will reach the market.
B.It will speed up driving.
C.It will have a sporty look.
D.It will be made of plastic.
根据第一段中“By storing the captured CO2 and then dealing with it, ZEM can contribute to reducing global warming.(通过储存捕获的二氧化碳然后进行处理,ZEM可以为减缓全球变暖做出贡献。)”
根据划线词所在部分“This means that ten cars can store as much CO2 as an average tree. That may not seem like much, but the overall payoff is significant if you were to utilize it in every passenger car.(这意味着10辆汽车可以储存的二氧化碳相当于一棵普通的树。这可能看起来不多,但如果你在每辆乘用车上utilize它,总体回报是显著的。)”中“That may not seem like much”和“but the overall payoff is significant”可知,句中对两种情况进行了对比,结合划线词后in every passenger car可知,句中把“用到10辆汽车”和“用到每辆乘用车上”的情况进行了对比,由此推知,划线词与Apply同义,意为“应用”。
根据第三段“A life cycle analysis with SimaPro software can be used to determine the extent to which the life cycle of the vehicle—from construction to use and afterlife—is carbonneutral.Several innovations contribute to this goal.Consider the 3D printing techniques used by the students. The body panels are made through 3D printing, resulting in almost no remaining waste. In addition, the student team prints plastics that can be recycled for other projects.(使用SimaPro软件进行生命周期分析,可以确定车辆的生命周期(从建造到使用和使用后)达到碳中和的程度。一些创新有助于实现这一目标。 考虑学生使用的3D打印技术。车身面板是通过3D打印制造的,几乎没有剩余的废物。此外,学生团队打印的塑料可以回收用于其他项目。 )”可知,3D打印技术有助于实现车辆的碳中和。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“We haven't finished developing yet, but we believe it will eventually hit the road.(我们还没有完成开发,但我们相信它最终会上路行驶。)” 故选A项。

C.He saw garbage piled high in vacant, abandoned lots.
D.Covington made the garden a little bigger to plant more.
E.And almost immediately neighbors began asking to participate.
F.He planted a garden to help feed residents and enrich their lives.
G.What began as an effort to remove trash has turned into a site of community.
1.B 根据上文“Mark Covington, founder of the Georgia Street Community Collective in Detroit, stands in a corner of his urban farm, breathing the fresh air in the early morning.(Mark Covington是底特律乔治亚街社区集体组织的创始人,他站在自家城市农场的一角,呼吸着清晨的新鲜空气)”及下文“Early in the day, the green crops giving life to tomatoes, cabbages, eggplants, and more are bathed in gold, as if being watered by the sun.(清晨,绿色的庄稼,如西红柿、卷心菜、茄子等,沐浴在金色之中,仿佛被太阳浇灌过)”可知,这些描述共同构成了清晨在这个集体农场中的典型景象,B项“这是集体农场的一个典型清晨场景”符合语境,故选B。
2.C 根据上文“In 2007, Covington lost his job and returned to his childhood street.(2007年,Covington失去了工作,回到了儿时的街道)”以及下文“‘It was dirty,’ he said.(‘很脏,’他说)”可知,此处是说Covington回到儿时的街道后看到脏乱的景象,C项“他看到垃圾堆在空的、废弃的空地上”符合语境,故选C。
4.E 上文“Covington started with a small community garden.(Covington从一个小的社区花园开始)”提到Covington开始种植社区花园,结合下文“One mother sent three children to help him build a larger garden where the kids could grow food, stay busy during the summer and add structure to their lives.(一位母亲让三个孩子帮他建了一个更大的花园,孩子们可以在那里种食物,在夏天保持忙碌,并为他们的生活增添一些安排)”可知,邻居们和Covington一起种植社区花园,E项“邻居们几乎立刻就开始要求参与进来”符合语境,故选E。
5.G 结合下文“On one corner: a movie screen and a public garden with vegetable and flower beds.On another: a farm and a community center in a building.Nearby are garlic beds and a greenhouse.(在一个角落里:一个电影屏幕和一个有蔬菜和花坛的公共花园。
